“It’s not what you know; it’s what you can prove” & the hardest thing to prove is intent. Every piece of advice Alonso gave was true; but his intentions was diabolical! That’s what made his character so scary! 💯

I thought Ethan's character was very naive,a simp and too trusting. Another cop tells you to smoke an illegal substance, then you do it ??? STUPID. LOL. Then that cop pulls a gun and puts it to his head ??? We'd be fighting the entire shift !!! LOL. I'd beat him to a-PULP. I did 4 deployments to go fight in Iraq ( I volunteered for all 4 tours )with the Texas Guard ( also did 2 tours back-to-back also ) my first tour was with an infantry unit at Camp TQ in 2005. Morality is just a concept that was made by humans. Whether certain moral standards were establish through politics (law), religion teachings, and/or popular opinions, there is no right or wrong answers in a lot of cases. Even if there were right or wrong answers, human beings are not capable of knowing it. Will today's popular moral standard would be the same in 5000 years (assuming that people won't outright become drastically corrupt)? I don't think so. A lot of people are saying what is right or wrong only because they just see what is in front of them.

15:43 A lot of the people seen in this scene and others were actual residents of this street. Director Antoine Fuqua wanted TRAINING DAY to look as authentic as possible, and he shot on location in some of the most infamous neighborhoods of Los Angeles. He even obtained permission to shoot in the Imperial Courts housing project, the first time L.A. street gangs had allowed a film crew to be brought into that neighborhood. The crew also filmed in Hoover Block and Baldwin Village. Parts of the film were shot on a dead end street called Palmwood Drive, where the Black P. Stones Blood gang members were seen on the rooftops. Cle Shaheed Sloan, aka “Bone” in the film, was the gang technical advisor of TRAINING DAY, and he managed to get on screen real-life gang members from the Rollin' 60 Crips, PJ Watts Crips, and B. P. Stones (a Bloods set). According to Fuqua, the actors and crew ended up receiving a warm welcome from local residents. When he was unable to shoot a scene directly on location, he recreated the locations on sets.

29:30 Smiley was thankfully rational enough to hear Jake out, and verify Jake’s story. For Smiley, killing Jake was business, but as you alluded to, he let Jake go because he saved his cousins life and did the right thing. At the time, he’s telling Jake “I’ll still kill you. Especially if you ever come back here.” So by that essence, everyone in the room walked away clean.

7:38 it took me a LOOONG time to figure out the snail joke. It's not a joke, it was advice for jake, "No matter where you go, move and speak with a purpose and people will respect you"
So then Alonso and Jake go to The Jungle, and Alonso warns Jake "Never come here without me", and then later Alonso sets Jake up to get killed elsewhere.
But Jake doesn't die, he survives and then returns to The Jungle. Bone asks him "You got business here?" and Jake is there to get Alonso. Bone lets him pass, because he is not here for any of them, it's "Cop Business", and no one there likes Alonso so they hope Jake is there to buss him up.

Another stellar choice! Denzel should have received the Oscar for this performance. Ethan Hawk on the other hand is fantastic in his role as well. Their on screen portrayals are totally believable. This and GLORY are my favorite Denzel Washington characters. Thank you Jen for this reaction...Eric 😊

Denzel is just too good. The fact that he can make the audience feel for what he's saying when it comes to what a cop must do; that there's a gray area. A masterclass performance.

So, for those wondering about if undercover cops can use drugs if they are forced to or to keep their cover; at one point, it was illegal for undercovers, but this was changed due to the fact that refusing to take drugs from dealers can get them killed.

The thing about Alonzo is that everything he was saying throughout the whole film was right. As extreme as he was. The problem is that his intentions did not line up with what he was saying. He was using the truth that he was saying as a smoke screen for his evil and wicked actions. An absolute powerhouse performance by Denzel Washington.

Seen quite a few of ur reactions and I've liked them all. But this is the first one i watched where i not only saw insight, but saw u as someone that wasn't as naive or maybe innocent as i previously thought from earlier reactions. Hopefully thats taken as a compliment bc that's what was intended. Just happily surprised me is all bc exploring dark themes and the dark side of ourselves, i believe, just helps us be better people. Thank you for the great reaction.

Other films by director Antoine Fuqua I recommend watching are Tears of the Sun and Shooter. Another Denzel Washington movie I recommend watching is American Gangster. Other films like this I recommend watching are We Own the Night, Street Kings and End of Watch

Denzil took the part even though he doesn’t like playing gangsters etc, the arc of his character was to show they never come out on top. Same with american gangster

Not based on a true story but Alonzo was inspired by a real life LAPD officer.
Edit: Just looked it up, The officer's name was Rafael Perez.

The DVD commentary for this movie is very interesting. They explain that Alonso is essentially meant to represent temptation, and the Devil in a way. Trying to get Jake down his path, misleading him and dangling rewards

I Know That This Movie Was Only Fictional. ( Supposedly Based On A Real Crooked Cop! ) But Denzel Washington's Character Had Literally No Redeemable Value , Whatsoever. No Surprise Denzel Washington Won 🏆 The Academy Award For Best Actor.
