Thanks for checking out my video! I should preface, I kept this bike in "Standard Mode" to experience this bike how it was intended from factory for a "Standard" ride.
If you missed my Road Glide test ride, check it out! ua-cam.com/video/GEnKyJeSwvw/v-deo.html
    **Edit***
As many of you have mentioned, I should have put it in "Sport" mode to fix the throttle lag. I also mentioned I didn't do research on this bike, exactly the same amount of research I did on the Road Glide. Zero. I hopped on and rode. These were my first impressions. The fact that I need to change "Modes" to choose how the bike rides is basically the same as buying a car that can park itself for me. Having a machine governor itself to make up for a riders reaction time is just not the direction I want to see technology move towards. But AGAIN. These were my first impressions, captured on video. As I mention ALL THE TIME, Every rider is different. Everyone likes different things. Shouldn't we celebrate the fact that manufacturers produce unique machines so that all riders have what they want? In the end it's not about whether or not you like Harley over Indian over Honda over BMW.... It's always going to be the wrong opinion in someone else's mind. #rideyourownride

it came from the factory with 3 modes. You kept it in one mode that you didn't like. That'd be on you, not "how the factory intended". I watched the entire thing and will thumbs up it just to show support of your channel, but honestly, it was like watching 18 minutes of complaining because you weren't used to that type of bike. I like the Challenger. My impressions were all very positive. I did not have the throttle lag you mentioned, and found the adjustable windshield to provide comfort above the RG. As a mechanical engineer, I may over analyze engine design, and Challenger's engine/primary are next generation as compared to HD, just no comparison. Engine is: OHC, water cooled (not select engine head cooling like HD), gear primary drive, 108hp (stock), proper cylinder sleeves (won't crack), well designed oil pump, no oil sumping, no cross talk between primary and transmission. I have two Harleys, but due to TC88 cam chain design flaw will be moving away from HD. Thanks for the ride summary. Always good to hear other's perspectives.

    • @eb1941
      @eb1941 3 роки тому

@@jspiers1 yes, although resolved, HD sold me product and they new there was a design problem. If I was informed at time of purchase and decided to still buy the product, that is different. No mention of this problem in my manual, no bulletin from HD, no official company guidance. Their action represents a company that does not represent putting the customer first. Even if they acknowledge the problem and share in the cost of repair, something to represent their part in such a debacle. Not just me, three friends that bought HD at same time have sworn off the brand.

I totally agree about the superior mechanical design of the Indian (Actually, the Challenger is from the Victory days) vs the Harley M8...if you've ever watch the Harley vs Victory video by Mike Schutz --a bit over zealous--what he is saying has some truth...I've owned four Harleys from the 88B, 96, 103, & 107 M8 and the transmission migration to primary and sumping did it for me and now looking at the Indian motors...not a lot of folks know the big difference in mechanical design of the Indian & Harley, one you set aside your subjective biases, the new Indian Power Plus 108 is clearly light years ahead of the Harley M8 Vtwin...thanks

Throttle response is controlled by the modes. Standard mode has a ~.5 second lag it tames that monster engine. helps keep traction on the rear tire, it will kick out in standard mode if you romp on it. Sport mode 100% takes that away, and it makes each "acceleration".... exciting.. that rear tire will chirp and kick easily. -----source I have about 500 miles on my week old challenger. :)

When I test rode a Vaquero, it felt squirely, I kept feeling like I didn't 'get it'... just awkward. Right after that, I rode an Ultra Limited and it felt awesome. I owned a Challenger for about a month. It has tons of power, and the ergonomics are fantastic (especially considering I'm 6'1), but there are a lot of kinks that Indian still needs to work through. One of the common complaints is the throttle response, as you mention. It is a quite a bit more delayed than my Ultra Limited, but what's worse is that some of the new Challengers (mine was one) have total throttle failure. When this happens, on start-up, there will be zero throttle response until throttle is approx. half open. There are also common problems with cylinder misfires on the new motor in that bike, so be aware of that as well. All in all, it has tons of power and is super balanced, but it is definitely different.

I watched both of your videos for this and the Roadglide. Its amazing that you complained that much about the Challenger front end being front heavy when the Roadglide has almost 25 more lbs on the front end than the Challenger and there wasn't one time that you complained about the Roadglide's front end weight in turns. Additionally the throttle lag that you experienced is engineered that way so in Normal and Rain mode the bike doesn't have too much aggressiveness, however if you would have put the bike in different modes ie: Sport mode; you would have seen that throttle lag go away. As an owner of both Harley and Indian, I have to say that they have their differences and similarities alike. I love my Dyna for short trips and kicking around town, but for long road trips I love my Indian. But I understand that my 2 different bikes are set for 2 different riding environments, and I don't believe that you realized that in your riding and video here!

Vents are there to stop the wind flow when it's cold, but they turn to direct the wind in the direction you want it to go, so if you just turn them into your legs, you were going to be way full of wind in your legs. Cruisers are designed for it. In another video I asked you to test the street glide before you make a desition to the road glide. And that's exactly why I ask you to do that. Street glide is much better to direct wind with deflectors. When it's hot, you can direct it to yourself, when it's freezing cold, you can protect yourself from it. Also works prety good with light rain on the highway.

1: you're wearing leathers on a hot sunny day.
2: the bike has sport mode and the guy told you in the beginning of the video that the modes change throttle response e.g.:Lag.
Also.. Baggers with fairings are designed to keep wind off of you in all weather conditions.
The reason this bike has a dead spot in the throttle is because of the ride mode sensor. When you change modes the throttle must go back to zero for the reset.

Street glide is where it’s at. Previously I had a Street Bob so it has a little more comfort but still relatively light. Thank you for posting your rides. It gets me through until I can get my fuel leak fixed so I can ride again.

Put it in Sport Mode! The whole video I kept hoping you would. It will change throttle response. Also you have to open the air vents to get some airflow. That fairing is doing what it was designed to do. I would suggest researching a bikes feature before doing a video on it. Your videos are great, keep up the good work just do some homework before hand.

air flow is super important, especially on a hot day. As a street glide owner and having rode my brother road glide and my previous bike being a road king, i have to say i really love the street glide. It just feels right. Seem to be a popular bike for the ladies going to a bagger, probably because of the balance and ride height. Just my opinion, thanks for the ride, been seeing more of more of these Indians on the road and was curious myself

Nice bike buddy. My point remains though. I can also make that 0-100 with a passenger and 3 bags fully loaded for cross state/country trips. Comparing my Glide to your naked street bike is like comparing a decked out road king to a hayabusa. Each has its purpose and is fantastic, but,I'll stick to my Hog for my current purpose.
On that note, those Triumph GT's are fantastic bikes and I wish I could ride one here up here in WA without crossing into the west side

Yes air flow and reach are issues that most people talk about with that bike and it's more noticeable on a hot day. The lag and rev matching is not an issue in sport mode. I am a Harley guy myself but the challenger is fun to play with in sport mode. I feel bad that you didn't have a good experience because I was one of those people that suggested you try it. You are hard core for using a leather jacket in the heat. Ride safe.

The fairing is supposed to block the wind. Allows you to ride longer and ride in colder weather. It's a touring bike.

Polaris engines like higher revs than Harleys, I was told this when I bought my 2016 Victory Cross country. I'm completely used to it now and love my Victory. As far as wind goes, my Victory also blocks a lot of wind but I ride year round and that definitely helps in January & February, it is hot right now though.

Just like the solid clunky shifting. I hope to make this the last bike I own. At 57 years old, and just over 30k on the odometer, it seems very doable.

I look forward to all your riding videos and commentary. I would have thought that this bike would have had some easy vents to use. You've got to have some wind on you. Thank you again for being very candid with all you say. Till the next video.

As a former '07 Road King Classic owner, I'm here to give the 2017 Indian Chieftain 111c.i. two thumbs up. Just got done a 30 day rental test ride and it was awesome! Had chromed out controls, loud powerful pipes, tuned, Arlen Ness air cleaner. The touch screen with Bluetooth is awesome and easy to learn! Loved playing iHeart radio on my way home from work. The Chieftain looks 10x better than this model, and the Chieftain is awesome on throttle response! 30-day-rental with true daily driver real world use. They (Indian) won me over for sure, and 2021 is looking like a good year to treat myself and wife to a new bagger 😊

I test rode one of these and also made a video - I agree that you shouldn’t have to change modes to have normal throttle response. I found the brakes soft. In both your case and mine it could be setup problems from the dealer or whomever does demo bikes

  • @scottrubie6826

I've riden it. A. Open the vents in fairing & B. put in sport mode. It doesn't need to rev hard in down change. No indian does thats one distinct difference to any harley. The suspension is better and the fairing controls are closer than a road glide. I didnt find it as heavy as the road glide. Its water cooled is the other thing so it revs higher than any air cooled bike even other indians. If you had ever riden a victory cross country its very comparable to that ride.

Glad you tried it and not every bike is for every rider. I haven't and don't intend to test ride the Challenger (or Road Glide for that matter) as I dislike fixed fairing bikes, Indian or Harley or Yamaha. I have a 2017 Indian Chieftain Limited and wish you would have tried that model while you were there as well. It is a fork mounted fairing bike which is similar to the Street Glide. I rode the Street Glide during a demo ride event when I was searching for a new bike. The Indian Chieftain was in a word smooth. The Street Glide in a word was harsh (oh and heavy feeling too, even just bringing up off of the kickstand). But you are so correct in saying TRY THE DAMN BIKE before you buy it. If you ever make it over to the Pocono's in PA let me know !!

I sat on one in Daytona in the Spring with every intention of test riding it. But after sitting on it, compared to my Yamaha Eluder, I was so unimpressed that I didn't even ride it. My Eluder has two throttle modes, Sport and Tour. I leave it in Sport for a linear throttle response. The Tour mode isn't linear, much like what you were describing in the Standard mode. The Eluder wasn't as highly popular as it's brother the Star Venture (a touring dresser), but it's a well balanced touring bagger. If you ever get the chance, take one for a test ride. Peace and love.

Air flow is a funny thing. I owned a 2016 Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquero (Kawi's version of the Road Glide), and now I have a 2019 FLHXS. The air-cooled Harley "rides cooler" than the Kawi did, by far. I can go out in 100+F temps with great comfort (except for at stop lights, of course), whereas I was sweating my butt off on the Kawi! Even my 79 KZ650SR rides cooler than that Vaquero did. Gotta be air flow around the bike - Harley just nails it!

I tried the Challenger but I chose my 2019 Chieftain Dark Horse over it because the Chieftain looks, sounds and feels better in my opinion. The Challenger kind of dampened the feeling of riding a motorcycle to me, to smooth, to much wind block and to much of a cage like feeling. My two cents, throw a leg over the 2019 Chieftain and put it in sport and i think you'll enjoy it. Keep up the great work 👍

4:47 So true about the learning curve. I've used my neighbor's bike for only a few times when we ride together. But his brakes are so instant compared to mine that I accidentally grabbed onto it too suddenly at a yellow to red light change, and I skidded that bad boy halfway into the crosswalk. Also, his clutch grabs a lot sooner than mine and I've turned off his engine a couple of times because I didn't give it enough throttle. xD

As some who somewhat regularly takes 500 mile trips departing just before dawn, I can see the appeal of blocking the wind. I had a 2016 Dyna Fat Bob with a quick release wind screen. By my first gas stop I'm curled up by the engine trying to warm myself up. Despite having layers for the temperature, they weren't particularly wind resistant, so I was still shivering and nearly numb anyway despite me usually being too warm when it's 70F out. Wind chill is serious business. And despite being able to make these 500 mile trips, there have been windy days that have fatigued me more in 2 hours than 8 hours of more tame days. I still have naked, unfaired bikes and those still preferred for my around town riding, but on those long trips, it's easy to underestimate the toll wind can take on you.

I have a 2018 RoadGlide Special. Honestly the only reason I'm not on an indian challenger right now is the limited after market options to make it my own and because Indian couldn't wipe out what I still owe on my RGS and put me ahead a little on the Challenger. Guess that means I'll revisit it after it gets refined a few more times
