    Of course, the first video I actually get my audio settings correct, it waited until when I was recording my narration to rain. I mitigated it the best I could in the editing process, but it still comes through at points. Bonus game: Can YOU guess at which point in the video it started raining outside?

    I’ve been struggling with how to put it into words but this is exactly the kind of content that I love and that I’ve really been wanting to make.
    As silly (and kind of stupid) as asking for work through youtube comments is, I still hold the quote “a shot not fired, is a shot missed” close to my heart.
    so fuck it, we ball.
    I consider myself a gmod vet, I’ve been playing it since 2012, maybe 2013 and have clocked over 10.000 hours in source engine stuff, 3,4k of them being in gmod. the rest being spread out over other things, from hammer and sfm to sourcemods like smod redux.
    I’ve a whole myriad of technical knowledge related to the engine but also making stuff in and around it, only thing i’ve been unable to do is write (lua) script mods since i’ve only been learning how to code for the last year.
    Might not be particularly impressive and in the eyes of some maybe even sad, but I’d love to help in any way if I can. This game has been a large chunk of my life so far and these videos just bring out a lot of emotion in me, memories and ideas (this is the part im struggling to put into words, can you tell?). Things I haven’t felt related to it in a long time, anyway.
    If you’re interested in at least hearing me out on this, I’d appreciate it. my discord name is “drunkchey” with the old tag being drunkchey#9085.
    And if you don’t, thats fine, I get it. Personally if I got a comment like this I’d probably just write it off as some enthusiastic kid who doesn’t really know much and go on with my day.
    But if there is one thing I can say, it’s to keep going with these, at least for a little while longer. I’d really appreciate it.
    Best of luck to you and a good day or night depending on when (and probably also if) you read this.
    (that is, if I don’t end up deleting this later out of embarrassment later. I don’t like seeing a past me getting emotional on the internet.)

    Some of the concerns surrounding Y2K were actually true, but were understood to be potential problems and thus were countered without anyone in the general public really having an idea that it wouod ever have been an issue. The computers were never going to launch all the nukes, but worries about bank interest being counted in negatives when calendars on computers rolled over to 00 among other computer calculation concerns were actually legitimate based on how computers were designed at the time-- but smart people did smart things and it was completely averted.
    What I find interesting is how in retrospect it was this huge conspiracy leading up to the year 2000, then when it hit and nothing happened everyone assumed it was all fake-- All the while, it was quietly being taken care of, which I think is pretty cool.

    • @bugjams
      @bugjams 3 місяці тому +3

      And now we can all look back on "Y2K" and associate it with emo boys, Invader Zim, "rawr randumz x3" talk, and classic memes! The good ending.

      That’s what happened with Covid too. People are retrospectively saying see the virus wants that bad but totally forget that we took measures that prevented the potential bad outcomes.
      This applies to all things. Once we actually crack down on climate change and maybe even stop it people will also say “see climate change wasn’t that bad. Nothing really happened.”

Peaceful and a little sad, like it’s the last place we might ever be, and all that’s left to do is talk about memories of a life that’s gone forever. Like a limbo between the end of life and the beginning of something new…

    small towns can sometimes have ever-present traffic noise even in the middle of the night, if they're next to a major road. Tons of passing cars, none local. The place where I lived as a kid was a tiny little neighborhood next to a two lane highway, the road everyone trying to avoid the main tolls crossing the state would take, and the sound of the traffic was just far enough away that it blurred into essentially white noise equivalent to ocean waves. It was genuinely a great sleep aid.

  • @kaliditzy
    @kaliditzy 7 місяців тому +24

    I'm going to be talking about some stuff in response to a few select things in this video, because I felt like it, and because it feels appropriate.
    I remember for the short time I was in college that I walked around at night, alone, at 4AM specifically. I didn't really think much about danger, as that doesn't really cross my mind, but it was a surreal experience and I felt extremely free that night. Sometimes I wonder what the world would look like years after humans suddenly disappeared, hopefully someone makes something like that at some point as this ALMOST scratches that itch.
    On one map you said the map creator must have recompiled the map several times to get the atmosphere just right, well fortunately recompiling the map several times is pretty much a thing of the past for modern source maps, since there are tools like Hammer++ that allow for real-time particle and lighting previews, imagine if we didn't have that - then good-looking maps like these would take months to make. As a mapper myself, there's probably a few things I can answer about the map-making process.
    I like how you talk about maps as if they're completely isolated and you could never leave, judging survivability purely based on that. It would be an interesting scenario as a human being to walk up to the edge of the map and get clocked in the face by the invisible barrier surrounding it. I wonder if one day people will truly take advantage of infmap technology to create a custom map with details and all that stretches for dozens of kilometers. Exploring that would be a chore but be extremely good for roleplay.
    That y2k city map would absolutely perfect for roleplay, but unfortunately most roleplay servers are really inaccessible. I wish I didn't have to wait several hours to download all the addons to even play a little bit of the server. As a kid I'd inadvertently waste the entire day waiting for the addons to download and it'd be bedtime by the time I got it finished. If only there were vanilla DarkRP servers, that would be awesome. That cracked glass material is likely just a custom material, well obviously but you know it probably uses some kind of normal map to offset the reflection by a small amount to add that distortion, normal maps are pretty powerful. I can only assume the "flashing textures" you're talking about is the nodraw material, and the flashing is caused by the previous render not being overdrawn so the next frame's post-processing effects are being dumped on top of the last frame, up until it becomes unbearable, if I'm mistaken then that's just a fun fact I guess.
    You sleep 8 hours a day? I sleep 12, I don't think 8 hours is a very long time, but I guess for a fully grown adult 6 hours is like the minimum so you could save like 2 hours if you wanna deal with the slight mental side-effects. Lets hope that this video encourages some people to make a new server or populate an existing one containing this map, if you do that roleplay event that'd be fucking cool, I would totally participate, does this channel have a discord server?
    I enjoyed this video greatly, and I enjoyed leaving my own thoughts here as I watched, like a dump for random thoughts. We didn't get to see very many maps but that last one was certainly a monster to explore, I'm sure. I'm excited to see where the train takes us next.

    • @loganfromearth
      @loganfromearth  7 місяців тому +9

      Oh yeah! I forgot about Hammer++. It seems trivial now with game editors like Unity but seeing the real-time light changes in H++ for the first time after a decade and a half of having to recompile to see lighting changes was mind-blowing.
      The flashing textures in the easter egg room are custom textures made to look like a glitch, it wasn't straight up Z-fighting. There's also a floating guy in there. Needless to say it was an eyesore, regardless of the fact that it was purposefully done.
      No discord server, probably just going to keep things in the channel's community tab for the foreseeable future. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      As someone who would use AI over the classic stuff it’s mostly because everyone’s seen most of the good surrealist art. Everyone’s seen the stairs, the bearded men riding their beards, et cetera. Plus, it’s hard to find good modern surrealist art. The only artists I can think of who I could justifiably say makes art that would fit into these environments would be Trevor Henderson, and Toy(e)

    This series is really great, and adding special episodes is a real treat. You've been doing really good with this series and I hope to see more.
    You wanted some special episode suggestions, so here's mine. Do you think you could do one on woodsy type maps? Maybe some abandoned places and whatnot? I always love those environments.

    Knowing it’s a late comment but I can’t show enough appreciation for your videos, and I’m especially happy I got to be a subscriber before 1K. I watch the videos everytime they come out and they are just so relatable and relaxing to watch. Love the videos and keep up the great work. (P.S. that Gmod server would be an amazing idea, and maybe you could start a discord to see who’s interested).
    Edit: Didn’t even realize i’m pretty sure i’ve been subscribed since before 100! THATS SO CRAZY TO ME

    Please do that community-wide RP week on the NYC map, I'm in a similar boat where I've played GMod for over a decade but I've never messed around in an RP server since I had no friends and it didn't feel welcoming to solo newcomers to my young insecure self. But now I'm older, and I'm jealous of all the fun opportunities RP servers offered and the memories that people made, and I have really been wanting to try out a server like that myself. I think having a server as a week-long event where it will slowly evolve over that week is a really fun idea, and since it is always going to be a relatively 'new' server even in the end it makes it incredibly friendly to newcomers too. I really hope that happens, and I would definitely be there taking part if it does (sans the days I have work, not doing a gmod rp shift before a real-life shift lol)

    Fake and fantasy brands are one of my favorite aspects in any game. It’s just so fun to observe and probably to create too! I wish there’s like a tutorial on how to do it. I even have a plan on making Unreal Engine game solely to create fake brands and apply them in the game.

      @Kalitayy When I saw the brands in the convenience store I was excited to see actual brands being used! In Sweden there actually exists “Svenska Lantchips”, “Estrella” and OLW brands for chips. All other products are also renames from real stuff which feels like I’m just roaming my local store 😂 I do think they are assets from the CSGO map Insertion 2 though, but still!

    42:19 someone else probably commented this already, but pop dog was a game development studio that made some of the maps for the very early commercial versions of counter strike, and they used to put those ads as easter eggs in their maps.

    Hey logan, I absolutely love these videos that you are making. Every time I see a new one it is an instant click. I think an interesting idea that I had was maybe you could branch out of g-mod and potentially look at some VR-Chat or other games that have a similar community that have interesting map ideas! i know you said that VR is out of scope for you right now, but there is a desktop version of it where you have most of the functionalites you get out of VR as well!

    • @loganfromearth
      @loganfromearth  7 місяців тому

      I'm definitely not limited to just gmod for this series. Later on down the line, there could be episodes featuring other games with a healthy community of talented creators, like Roblox, VR Chat, Arma 3, Skyrim, Project Zomboid, etc.

    All of the products in the store of the first map are Swedish, although with names slightly changed, some inappropriate lol. The one in the top left of the candy isle says “tutte” which means “boob”. Also, “Svenska lantchips” literally means “Swedish country crisps”, they’re very good 😁 I wouldn’t give them to a burglar.

    30:40 I think the most detailed urban map I've ever seen in GMod was RP_UnionCity, which has both day and night versions, followed by RP_Southside by the same creator. You could check them out in a future video. The texture work on those maps was insanely good, at some points it felt like I was playing GTA IV in first person instead of GMod.

    • @loganfromearth
      @loganfromearth  7 місяців тому +2

      Yeah, those are good maps. Interestingly enough, rp_nycity is pretty much the two of them combined into one map with a few changes, iirc. I'm convinced that Fishke performed some sort of blood ritual to gain the literal magic required to make stuff like this in Source.
