This was the "shorter, tangentially related video that shouldn't take stupidly long to make" I referenced in the last video. Been a rough couple months, so sorry it took so long. More soon.
Dont worry yourself, its a nice video and a fairly lengthy one at that too. I just think its funny that you went over two games falsely scrutinized by Mamamax without mentioning Mamamax. But Mamamax doesn't deserve any publicity anyways so I'm not complaining
I legit met Nexialist years ago on Worlds. He was really cool and tried to do the creepy stuff, but I wasn't into it and asked him if he knew any cool rooms on Worlds. I guess I passed his vibe check and he spent the next 2-3 hours showing me all his favorite rooms, a few secret rooms, and some really neat historical stuff on the site. He said he was happy to see someone interested in the game and its old community - he even showed me the Worlds 9/11 memorial. He was a cool, normal guy and an excellent guide.
@Mustacheman17 sucks that everything is a lie if it can't be proven now, and if you have proof people whine and complain about you recording first and not enjoying the moment
i like the idea that the creator of kanye quest made it with the sole goal of putting this arg out there, nobody found it for two years, and eventually they just anonymously put out a guide themself because they were sick of waiting
Playing a "religious" Minecraft mod and being told almost immediately to get strapped with guns, shotguns, and rocket launchers has to be one of the funniest tonal whiplashes.
Similar to the Runescape cabbage cult, Elder Scrolls Online has a cult dedicated to the holy art of sleeping on bridges. I know this because I'm in it. The person who got it all started, a player with an Argonian character named Sleeps-On-Bridges, got so well-known within the game (to the point of having a PC Gamer article written about him) that the developers have given him shoutouts during dev streams, and even added a couple of in-game references to him. The cult currently isn't as active as we used to be, but we left our mark on the game, and I suppose that's enough.
There's also a jewish cult that runs "bible chat" friends chat. Basically they spend all day misguiding christians and inciting violence on muslims.@@Lewtable
The Silver Sisterhood one is pretty funny. They just sound like LARPers that live in a commune and decided, despite not using electricity, one of them would just learn how to code lmao.
Just wanna add that they were involved with beating their members, some weird bondage stuff, members escaping, and some connection to neonazi groups. They're still a cult, cults aren't just small new religions, they're destructive ones. Weird Reads with Emily Louise did a stream about them. As for the vtuber stuff, rumors say that the leader was Cure Dolly. I used to watch her Japanese lesson videos. She passed away a while ago. I don't know for sure if she really was a cult leader
cults in video games? yeah, i know a cult. Ever heard of Team Fortress 2? The fanatics in that game prays for months on end to get updates, and sometimes their deity responds and gives an update to the game.
Kanye Quest in particular was always one of my favorite weird internet ARG mysteries since it took years to actually crack it and I had somehow managed to keep up with the mystery from the very beginning.
I remember looking into almost every video about this stupid cult, I even looked into other very popular games and streaming platforms. Still pretty fun tho
THANK you for being actually real about the backgrounds to all these rumors and urban myths surrounding these games. I love a good campfire story, but too many channels on here pretend this shit is legitimately real for storytelling and views, when imo the real story behind everything is usually way more interesting (Like with KanyeQuest).
The fabrications around Jimbly are particularly annoying to me. Even today people volunteer PII to online communities, probably even in the discord servers for these sPoOoOkY youtubers. And let's not even get into the folks who'd freely post their whole family trees on geocities.
As soon as I heard the name "SAPPHO" all the memories of that person suddendly came back and I gotta tell you, this person is fucking insane. I'm pretty sure Sappho got raided and actually got arrested and is now in prison, her dog has been taken from her fortunately.
Thank u so much for talking about these things without the whole spooooky slow deep voice narration shit lmao. i already knew some of these and it drives me crazy when a video looks interesting but the narration is so slow to build "suspense" that its like 5x the length it needs to be
@@aarondonald1611 A lot of youtubers who cover ooky spooky scrimblo files type stuff are much, much worse. nexpo videos are like 45% contemplative silence

That minecraft mod is wild. I sincerely wonder what could get done if that amount of money was devoted to an actual passion project mod instead of a shitty cult recruitment tool
@@GeckoGabe Were they commissioned? I thought they made it for a chance to win, and then got consolation money because Mr Beast was genuinely impressed by their work
The funny thing is that the devs only advertise this ONE world. It isn't even a world made with effort. They are trying to milk it for crypto, NFTs and other bullshit.
Cults and VRchat go hand in hand. There was this furry dude I met in a world who tried to talk me into joining his discord server. I got curious and checked it out and there was "spirtual advice" channels, and the leader called themselves "Alpha" and told others to refer to him as that as well. Every member practically worshipped him and one member told me he lost a lifetime friend because they told him to stop hanging out with the "alpha" because he was bad news...and this was only ONE of the weird vrchat "cults" I ran into.
I actually remembered that there was this VRChat furry vtuber kind of thing? And he had a harem and stuff on his Discord and all the stuff you said sounded very similar. Was he like this blue lizard/dragon thing? Edit: Nvm that's another one on top of this one and like other 3 I found in the comments. Wtf is wrong with VRChat
I agree with that, that org has gone loopy. I was on their site recently reading their articles and that alone gave me cult vibes. They also have an obsession with wanting to make everyone vegan.
Hey there, I used to hang out on worlds for a while a few years back, I even met with Jimbly a few times and am featured in the "mugshot room" (under the same name.) I quickly found that the regulars are older folk who had been using the platform for a long time; they all knew each other and overall were chill and happy to welcome newcomers and answer questions. However, they seemed to be really bothered by the occasional influx of new users wanting to see spooky stuff - especially those who prefer to call worlds a "game" rather than "chat room" - and this made me feel really bad because I had happened to join around one of those times and everyone was suspicious of me at first. I haven't hopped on in a long time because Im afraid that I may somehow taint the little community that's left, but videos like this really make me reconsider my hesitation. The aged graphics and features do make the experience very spooky and eerie at first, but the people who are there to genuinely connect and chat have been very kind people to me.
My understanding is more just that the guy who was the main financial backer was a scientologist, not that the church of scientology itself was really involved. But the founders of neopets were firm on keeping out any religious or political content and scientology had very little impact on the brand or company. The guy though did have a different massive impact: he introduced native advertising to neopets.
22:00 While the fact that the game was made for satirical purposes to make fun of the cult by a friend of the creator of Hong Kong 97, in the same magazine that game was published in, actual games and apps made by the cult were mentioned. You can read about it in the first volume of Game Urara (ゲームウララ) from 1995, pages 156-159 (NSFW warning, the same magazine had many other NSFW topics unrelated to Aum) This is an entire giant rabbit hole itself (both the cult, their media and even the unrelated magazine) that could have mutiple hours of analysis videos.
Man let me just say, VR chat is one crazy and messed up place. It doesn't take much time too meet some of the worst kinds of people on there, especially child predators. Way too many people groom kids on there and it makes me sad that the devs do nothing about it. Hell, don't get me started on the super weird "sex rooms" and stuff they've got on there, plenty of which unofficially allow minors to join. I haven't spent much time on VR chat because it's just kinda depraved unless you're really careful with what rooms you join, but I did go down a rabbit hole over a couple of nights and yeah, some of the people there are about as crazy as any cults you can think of. Great video btw I loved this!!
When I hear about the... “cabbage” cult, my bones shiver, I shiver in my tingles, I quiver in my boots, my blood freezes, my heartbeat accelerates, I start to cold sweat remembering the actions of the cult. Truth is... I don’t know if I’ll ever be safe from their control. Great vid btw! I absolutely loved it.
He inadvertently referred to this video by stating that there were only a couple of videos on the topic by "independent creators", I'm guessing he didn't really want to use a pseudo-art project as a source.
It's hard for an online cult to exist because cults require control over the members and it's hard to exert control over someone when you can't physically get at them
Manipulation and gaslighting can do wonders. One of the biggest examples is a Vrchat cult with the leader Alissa Afton, was so bad one of the escaped victims gained Stockholm Syndrome officially and then went back to Alissa Afton. It depends on what you are going for, most commonly are kids or people who are mentally unstable in some way
Literally this. I used to study cults a while back and even though victims can literally just leave in an online server, the cult leaders and other followers will go out of their way to make the victim feel guilty about even thinking about leaving. I never really researched anything about the differences and similarities between real life meetings and online servers, but from this video, there's a lotta overlap. @@archlinuxuser
Twin Flames proves this is wrong tho, Jeff and Shaleighleih really do control pretty much every aspect of their followers lives all the way down to their fucking gender lol and they don't have the chance to abuse them physically. Not all the time, at least
Cults are never about physical control. You could take down a cult leader, put them in prison, and have their followers shipped thousands of miles away. And if that cult leader was effective at what they did, those followers would still show complete devotion and loyalty.
Ordinarily I dislike these types of videos, while I find the topics interesting, videos covering them always had too much fluff, either "guy over exaggerating his tone and obnoxiously sensationalizing stories" or "condescending skeptical snob who spends too long patronizingly explaining that someone dared to be wrong on the internet". It's incredibly refreshing to see just a levelheaded, casual explanation of things with occasional dry humor thrown in. Also love the Suda51 transitions.
A buddy of mine in high school told me about a cult in Star Wars Galaxies. There was a jawa or an ewok or something glitched into some stairs, and players just worshipped it. Good video, boss. Looking forward to the next one
For NightmareCraft, there's actually a pretty in-depth video about them by a Ferrel Mcguire, it's pretty good. What freaked me out though was uhhhh, I accidentally joined their Discord server back in the day. I've been working on a personal modpack for a couple years and I was briefly intrigued by their gun mod, joined to ask questions about how it worked, ended up dropping the mod and forgot to leave. Since I was there already I thought I'd do some sleuthing, and what's strange is I can't really figure out what they're using the mod for. My best guess right now is that it's an ego project for the Divines and those other two members Alex and Lau. Alex was in a lot of other Minecraft-related Discord servers I'm in, they're very active within the NightmareCraft community, and I personally couldn't find any evidence that they're using NightmareCraft as a recruitment tool, unless they're secretly DM'ing people on Discord and no one's raised a fuss about it yet. I will say however that it seems like some or many of the builders they've recruited for the mod from other servers are unpaid, uncredited, or both. I found messages from one in their server's voice channel saying that they were tired of working for Divine Gaming when they don't even have credits in the mod, and that they might leave soon. Unfortunately you could only see one half of the conversation since the other person was likely on a mic as this team member responded in text. Reminds me of what Chucklefish did with Starbound, using mainly unpaid interns to make their game. So it might not be indoctrinating people into a cult (yet), but there definitely could be some scummy stuff happening behind the scenes. We probably wouldn't know unless one of those uncredited NMC Team builders comes out and spills the beans though.
The beans (hosted on docs because the spineless FTB subreddit moderators removed the original post): docs.google.com/document/d/1yLRQkjQOIcPi5TOqNfuvrs9a7SjWLhyfaou1Z59BWjE/edit?usp=sharing
hold on I didn't know Chucklefish did that with Starbound, and it's one of my favorite games... but at the same time it makes a lot of sense. The game always felt oddly scuffed in its unique way, which I mean endearingly. Like I've had a surprising amount of issues with just getting the game to work on launch in the past. Looking into it now... It's a crime that the minds behind it didn't get paid. All that art, writing, coding, designing, concepts and all without pay is maddening. So much goes into making a game, and one that big? finding out that it was made from exploited labor it is just like... why? Gah, there is so much it takes, I feel like people don't realize it enough, making a game is just like any other art, and it takes so so so much planning depending on the projects scope. But I don't even really know all of it, I've made only a few things in Unity before that ship sailed...
@@blackjacka.5097 idk the article I found said there were people working on its beta that went unpaid. So I think it was happening towards the beginning too.
about the silver sisterhood, i know that there's some creepy stuff about them having neo-nazi magazines around their compound (which was, incidentally, used as the headquarters for a commune of practitioners of primal scream therapy before the sisterhood moved in) and that one of their members was an english woman called named miss martindale who later founded a splinter group or something called Aristasia. Aristasia has a bunch of websites still up and I remember like last year when I was looking into them they even had screenshots of a second life server, although I can't remember where it was posted, but you can find links to the other stuff under Miss Martindale's wikipedia article
It's a deep-ass rabbit hole too. My ultimate conclusion after going all the way down was that it was nice that these ladies have a writing project they're passionate about. Nothing dark or culty about it. They created a world to have fun with, and fun they had. Despite some weirdness and a hand-wringing article or two, the real goal they seemed to have was fun. Mary/Miss Martindale is now a therapist in LA.
You're a real one for being a Suda51 guy and putting those segment transitions in, I've been heavily enjoying your long term videos at home and at work for any given reason.
I actually found and talked to nexialist once while playing worlds. He sent me a link to a spooky world, and after talking to him for a while the bastard sent me a link to the fbi to self report yourself. I yelled at him for a bit but he kept literally shitposting in the chat, talking about how he was gonna shit and piss on me. Just extremely bizarre behaviour, it was a memorable encounter though that's for sure.
I really dig the Suda51/KTP style presentation on this channel, along with the sound effect stings and such from that series. Definitely a good vibe for the subjects of the videos.
Probably the best "internet archival" channel I've come across. Condemnation purely on actions taken, admits ignorance on having every factual detail, can simultaneously cover serious topics appropriately then straight then pivot to a goofy rugpull for obvious BS, and finally satirize the genre of covering internet spookies. There's no overdone dramatic inflection, his voice just presents things "as is" unless he wants to stress he's joking.

Yeah, look up Cure Dolly. She's one of the original Silver Sisterhood members, a trans woman mentioned in the documentary as someone they weren't allowed to film straight on. My understanding is that she was the primary or one of the major motivators for the group to change from being Aristasia to The Daughters of Shining Harmony because she got obsessed with Japanese culture and anime, especially Pre Cure. You can always tell if she's the primary member involved if the person never shows their face and uses a computer pitched-up voice.
as someone who has played vrchat before, if you’re looking into “cult-like” things on there, you should investigate the ‘vrchat families’. i always thought they were really weird so i can’t give any personal experience with em, but i genuinely do think they’re worth a deeper dive into
i realize i was kinda cryptic in this, ‘vrchat families’ usually contain a good amount of people with similar interests whether it be from avatar creation to clubbing. most of the time they’re tame, but theres adults who intentionally prey on young kids on vrchat to “adopt them”, usually exploiting the children’s vulnerability and trust of others by seeming friendly and using avatars kids like. when i used to play, i heard the adults of these types of ‘families’ would usually get no actual punishment if caught as the VRChat staff team really fucking sucks. i recommend checking out Brandom FM as he has multiple in depth videos about the “dark side of VRChat” in which these depraved actions occur.
@@lofi9586 in the spanish community these ''families'' are usually just people messing around and having fun without any actual ''family'' treatment or implication but even here i've seen a few of them that thake it VERY seriously and i can't imagine how dark it gets in bigger communities/languages
It's so weird to see a cult I was part of appear on this video. I was only there while I was a kid, but I still remember some of their weird customs and rules. Back then, all of that seemed pretty normal, but now at days I understand why a lot of people found these things as really irregular or weird. Even after so many years and just being a kid, I still have pretty clear memories of the Order of the Cabbage...
Its funny you use Yakuza footage in the Aum section, because it has an entire substory making fun of cults called "Munan Chohept Onast" in which huge groups of people gather together and chant "Shooreh Pippi". Eventually you find out the whole thing is basically just a front for the cult's leader to get with girls. The clothes are very similar to Aum wearing all white and the leader appears to be modeled after Shoko
In my opinion you are the perfect combination between seriousness and comedy when it comes to documentaries like these, and Im always looking forward to the next video!
If you're looking for more cults functioning in games look up the MMO guild 'The Enclave'. Their leader, Horrigan or Buzzcutpsycho, is infamous starting on Planetside 2 and I ran into them quite a lot playing on World of Warcraft Classic. A proper psycho who has instated a war on congress, induction ceremonies for the members and their children, and it even got to the point where one of their "roleplaying" events in WoW made the news when a US congressman spoke out about it. I believe they're still around in other MMO's as well, New World being the most recent that I could find.
It's honestly crazy that me and my friend randomly managed to find that Minecraft modpack one boring day, because you genuinely can't tell that it was made by a cult. We played it legit, and that gathering phase takes an insanely long amount of time, and you have to complete subquests to get stuff needed (there is actually a good amount of content that you missed). We both played on the hard difficulty, and honestly if the easy difficulty is like that then there is literally no difference lol, the crowds are huge and minibosses spawn constantly. And yes, the trek over to the Zombie Lord did take an eternity, however we ended stopping our playthrough at the first Sauron Eye because friend had internet issues for a week and then we kind of forgot about the modpack, so we didn't get to experience the road to the skeleton lord. It's honestly pretty fun until you gotta go to the lords, mainly because of the mushrooms and the handcrafted world, shame that the creator is a cult
Especially since, unlike all the other custom models, they're not blocky in the slightest and feel completely out of place. Both in terms of visuals and within this specific world (Why do we have modern guns like "glocks" and shotguns in this medieval world?).
@@Idkpleasejustletmechangeit Exactly! And I can ignore slightly more advanced weaponry if the world in question could make sense for it to exist in (Like if they have other advanced technology like airships or whatever), but it just feels weird when it's a literal modern shotgun in what's basically just a medieval world. It's inconsistent. Lol.
@@Cuprite1024 I agree. It should be kept consistent. Either make the technology realistic or go all in on the technology (maybe through a magic system that would explain such seemingly out of place technology).
I mean, I feel like "cult" can apply to many different kinds of communities, it's just that the word has negative connotations and therefore certain (bad) expectations. Religions are an example of cults, but nobody wants to call them that.
@@Gelatinocyte2 I'd argue some religions aren't really cults. Things like non-denominational christianity or a lot of new age beliefs aren't necessarily cultlike but definitely are religious.
this video brings back memeories of mamamax without the weird lies and overdrawn cinematics. he covered a lot of these games before, so I knew what to expect for the most part, but it's nice to ACTUALLY hear about these games in a matter-of-fact way. theatrics are cool and all, but sometimes the actual story is just better!
Huh, I didn't expect the sappho person to come up. I recall playing "Prison escape", one of the game worlds in VRC. I came across that player and we were on the guard team. The interactions were common place for most users but shortly after I was sent a friend request by them, Another player came up and notified me about them. To which I looked into it, deleted the request and moved on. Nothing notable but never can expect who you come across in those games.
Surprising how fast this became one of my fave channels. No sensationalizing or padding things out for content, and also keeping respect in mind for the people involved.
The last cult is A+ lmao. Take your time with videos, we're all still here for ya. I'm watching this literally playing OSRS and grinding out Mining xp lol
God your videos are so good man ppl making stuff in these areas always just do clickbaity unrealistic shit it’s so much more satisfying to have someone talk about it on a genuine level and also your style of tongue in cheek comedy about it is just perfect like fr appreciate this it more than makes up for the hours of slop I have sat through on yt
its insane that trans people have to struggle so much to medically transition and are constantly attacked by transphobic legislation claiming theyre tricking people, and then this cult exists, doing exactly what conservatives are accusing trans people of, with zero fucking consequences
I absolutely love that you still mention Googie in your videos, me and my bf completely inducted that word into our vocabulary to describe stuff with the same vibe ever since you made that dead games video. Love your stuff!
The utter delight I felt after spending the entire video thinking of the Cabbage Cult and then you actually (briefly) talking about it. Truly an iconic moment of Runescape history
I was originally gonna watch this because i thought it was genuinely a good video idea (and I still am watching because of that for the most part) but the main thing that caught my eye was the dimentio pfp, i forgot about spm for a good while and you unintentionally reminded me that I actually have to finish it so thanks for that :3
The big problem with cults in online games is that, on top off all the hoaxes, it’s hard to significantly define what a “cult” is. People “want to believe” in the eerie Heaven’s Gate kind of cult where everyone is delusional cause that’s interesting, but more realistically, the closest you’ll get is some disgusting creepy VRChat loser preying on impressionable minors. Which tbh, is less interesting than, “We have an entire system and hierarchy and recruitment and we make a $500k Minecraft mod.” So while cults can exist in online games, they’re super amateur and underwhelmingly lame. Plus child grooming is super tragic anyways, so sometimes people don’t wanna dwell on it longer than they have to. So tldr, random pedophile losers is significantly less fun to talk about than Heaven’s Gate. Anyways yeah. This was a crazy good video. Entertaining all the way through and also informative.
It's kind of sad because those more zany stories are also results of predatory practices, people just feel more disconnected from them because of their extreme circumstances. People like to pretend that they wouldn't fall victim to cult recruitment tactics as if it's an issue of being "smart" or "dumb" rather than happening to be in a vulnerable situation. Maybe it makes a cool story, but it's still a real story that happened to real people who got hurt because someone took advantage of them.
@@wah8974 Same for the LGBT movement and the "woke" ideology. A cult is defined by dogma, so if you have beliefs that defy reality (like a man can instantly become a woman just by saying they're a woman) that means that your ideology is part of a cult. If you pay attention it goes a lot deeper than that too, cults try to cut you off and separate you from your families, like these two aforementioned ideologies do too. Honestly, if we're being factually accurate, there are cults all over mmorpgs - I see LGBT guilds all the time advertising in gw2.
The minecraft one surprised me so much because the moment you explained the twin flame shit I remembered how in high school my best friend and her boyfriend talked about that stuff and their relationship ended with her having to get a restraining order against him. No idea if it was actually connected to the cult, but I do vividly remember her explaining soulmates and twin flames to me.
This is the first video watched from you and I absolutely adore your editing! It has an amazing pacing and everything just ties together so well! I love it!
Been playing runescape my whole life. So glad someone outside of the community’s finally talked about the cabbage cult. It’s such a well known thing in the community but so few people outside the game know about it. Stuff like the Falador massacre and item dupes always get coverage and while that stuff’s interesting I always thought the cabbage cult is what deserves discussion the most because it embodies what playing the game in the mid 2000’s was like.
Exclusive patent rights only last 20 years so in theory the Worlds owner can no longer get any money from them (filed 1998, so they're 6 years out of date).
People often forget that patents on video game stuff really only protect the code and the names/flavor used to identify them. For example, the nemesis system used in Shadow of Mordor/War isn’t actually protected other than the code used to make it and calling it the nemesis system.
These type of stories are what influenced me to make a game about what it felt like to grow up in the mmos of the internet, if you like this type of thing it's called Convento on steam. Your video about forgotten minecraft servers also gave me the feels, and the video "cult in dead mmo" by nexpo was also interesting
I remember the cabbage cult of 1983. I was just a little girl at the time. In some towns where the cabbage cult was practiced, cabbages were in such high demand that there were cabbage shortages. Adults would literally stomp over each other and snatch the last cabbage out of another person's hands so they could provide that cabbage to their own child. I was fortunate to receive three cabbages, and I still have them all; they are well-preserved. Many books were written to record and share the histories of the cabbages. I still have all of my books. I also still have the audio cassette tapes that played the music of the cabbages. There were even cartoons about the cabbages to indoctrinate the children further into the world of the cabbages and of the cabbage creator, Xavier Roberts. Few followers of the cabbage ever knew that Roberts was not the true creator of the cabbages. The true creator was the Martha Nelson Thomas. She challenged Roberts in the great cabbage battle, and although she won, most followers of the cabbage cult have been so well indoctrinated into the cabbage cult of Roberts that they hide his downfall and still revere him as their creator. Typical of cults, to cling to their false leader, refusing to accept any truths.
I liked that, unlike other similar videos, the overall nature of this video was rather satirical and memey. Really added to the feel since this is mostly just fake stuff Also Googy
THANK YOU for dispelling the shit about Worlds lmao. Yes Nexialist is just a chill dude, I interacted with him a few times. It was fun worming my way into his weird secret spots. And the rumor that the picture gallery is just a bunch of stolen shit lol... Something that MIGHT have legs is Jimbly being some kind of sex pest. Also solid music pulls!
As someone who was part of the Worlds community, I hate seeing it being represented like this in today's age. There was never a cult in Worlds, only people that enjoyed roleplaying (some of them maybe a little too much, sure) and liked to stay in character. Some of them used it to RP, some used it to chat with friends and meet new people and some members even found love there and are together to this day. I've never met a single bad person or had a bad experience back then. People were nice and it was a great way to meet people with similar interests and goals. I stopped using Worlds in the early 2010s because of the amount of people that started accounts just to mess with members and ask questions, because they were convinced there was a whole mysterious cult operating there and felt like they were going to "crack the case". The only thing they managed to do was to drive people off the "game" and ruin it for everyone. I wish people were more respectful about things they do not understand. Having more people active on Worlds would be really good to be honest, but they need to quit acting like fools. You're not a hero or a saviour, there's nothing to save. There's no mystery. Just people having harmless fun.

When it comes to patent trolls what usually happens when they go at large companies is that the companies tell them to screw off and it shows in the court filings, often with the patent troll losing. The only money its getting is from people not wanting to go to court and settling.

VR chat has a lot of nasties under the hood. during a rough patch i spent some time on it during that time i was found by a cult of artemis. they surrounded me, one of them was around me at all times in the game they got into contact with me in programs outside of the game anything i was on there would always be at least one of them in constant contact with me. at the time i did not realize what was going on i was just happy to have company and never questioned why this group of women and zero men where so attached. i never figured out it was a cult until about 6 months in and they started talking about artemis and how they wanted me to come meet some of them in person at a compound in west virgina. it was then that it started to dawn on me how i had been isolated from all other people in my life by them and started to reach back out to friends and family who helped me clear my mind. it ended with two strangers breaking into my home. DTA in VRchat is an understament.
The twin flames one is so particularly vile, I wouldn't wish my gender dysphoria on anyone, much less vulnerable women. Extorting people seeking companionship and making them hate themselves and most likely each other is just 💀
about the bit at around 54:00, the part about not trusting anyone, it's absurd how we went from "stranger danger" and other such PSA and common sense about not trusting anyone online, to where now kids will just give their own ID and other identifiers to anyone who'll just ask.
I'm happy to see a video that doesn't sensationalize Worlds and has some effort and research put into it. I used to be relatively frequent between 2021-2022, met many friends there, and well... I guess I'll put it this way: No one ever forced me (subtly or overtly) to think like them, believe something that they do, or see them as anything other than just another person on the interwebz. Even Nexialist (I've been concurrently online with Nex before) really just kinda chills these days.

The lore accurate Argonian names kill me every time

Cults and VRchat go hand in hand. There was this furry dude I met in a world who tried to talk me into joining his discord server. I got curious and checked it out and there was "spirtual advice" channels, and the leader called themselves "Alpha" and told others to refer to him as that as well. Every member practically worshipped him and one member told me he lost a lifetime friend because they told him to stop hanging out with the "alpha" because he was bad news...and this was only ONE of the weird vrchat "cults" I ran into.

While it didn’t operate through it, there was a period of time where Scientology held at least sizeable financial control over neo-pets

Nuh just the guy that got it of the ground and was ceo for many years: dug dohring.

22:00 While the fact that the game was made for satirical purposes to make fun of the cult by a friend of the creator of Hong Kong 97, in the same magazine that game was published in, actual games and apps made by the cult were mentioned. You can read about it in the first volume of Game Urara (ゲームウララ) from 1995, pages 156-159 (NSFW warning, the same magazine had many other NSFW topics unrelated to Aum)
This is an entire giant rabbit hole itself (both the cult, their media and even the unrelated magazine) that could have mutiple hours of analysis videos.

It depends on what you are going for, most commonly are kids or people who are mentally unstable in some way
Wrong. It's about emotional control. People have strong parasocial relationships without ever meeting their idols.
@@ferretoats4521Pretty sure people were unhappy with the game and they tried to do damage control by using unpaid labour

about the silver sisterhood, i know that there's some creepy stuff about them having neo-nazi magazines around their compound (which was, incidentally, used as the headquarters for a commune of practitioners of primal scream therapy before the sisterhood moved in) and that one of their members was an english woman called named miss martindale who later founded a splinter group or something called Aristasia. Aristasia has a bunch of websites still up and I remember like last year when I was looking into them they even had screenshots of a second life server, although I can't remember where it was posted, but you can find links to the other stuff under Miss Martindale's wikipedia article
Yeah I went down that rabbit hole a while ago and it’s wacky
It's a deep-ass rabbit hole too. My ultimate conclusion after going all the way down was that it was nice that these ladies have a writing project they're passionate about. Nothing dark or culty about it. They created a world to have fun with, and fun they had. Despite some weirdness and a hand-wringing article or two, the real goal they seemed to have was fun.
Guns in that minecraft mod is just viscerally hilarious to me.

The last cult is A+ lmao. Take your time with videos, we're all still here for ya. I'm watching this literally playing OSRS and grinding out Mining xp lol
the fact that no-one playing kanyequest knew that the mysterious deity "basedgod" refers to the Based God himself Lil B, makes me sad
How did they not know about the founder of rap
lil b invented music dude
God your videos are so good man ppl making stuff in these areas always just do clickbaity unrealistic shit it’s so much more satisfying to have someone talk about it on a genuine level and also your style of tongue in cheek comedy about it is just perfect like fr appreciate this it more than makes up for the hours of slop I have sat through on yt
Sure. Your ability to discern quality is only rivaled by your command of punctuation.
@@goat-eyes bro why are you so mad 😭
I'm going to be honest "homophobic forced transitioning" was not on my cult bingo card
really highlights the irony of puritanical relationship beliefs. sickening how it’s used to exert power over others:(
its insane that trans people have to struggle so much to medically transition and are constantly attacked by transphobic legislation claiming theyre tricking people, and then this cult exists, doing exactly what conservatives are accusing trans people of, with zero fucking consequences
aaaaa as if us trans girlies needed more bad press T_T
2070 paradigm shift, state enforced homosexuality becomes the norm.
@@-divinetragedy for real girl. iirc clara hope is transfem/non binary so that’s cool at least
I was originally gonna watch this because i thought it was genuinely a good video idea (and I still am watching because of that for the most part) but the main thing that caught my eye was the dimentio pfp, i forgot about spm for a good while and you unintentionally reminded me that I actually have to finish it so thanks for that :3
cant believe how great of a find this video was for midnight binge watching. i loved this vid. keep it up.
The Silver Sisterhood basically just created their own IRL RP server.
Heck they don’t even need to deal with RDMing! It’s great
Yeah they sound pretty harmless. it seems to be a cult in the NRM sense rather than in the high control group sense.
I agree I can’t say I was disappointed but def was thinking about more established and textbook cults when I clicked on the video
It's impossible to define 'cult' because the difference between a religion and a cult is whether or not the person speaking likes it
@@wah8974 Same for the LGBT movement and the "woke" ideology.
@@wah8974 That's not really how it works but okay
The minecraft one surprised me so much because the moment you explained the twin flame shit I remembered how in high school my best friend and her boyfriend talked about that stuff and their relationship ended with her having to get a restraining order against him. No idea if it was actually connected to the cult, but I do vividly remember her explaining soulmates and twin flames to me.
This guy popped up on my feed and just like that I've been blessed with a new UA-camr backlog to peruse. That's like a twice-a-year thing ✨
Stuff like the Falador massacre and item dupes always get coverage and while that stuff’s interesting I always thought the cabbage cult is what deserves discussion the most because it embodies what playing the game in the mid 2000’s was like.
buying gf
Im part of tree gang. In fact, i was a founding member. Oir cult and cabbage cult have "wars" and its so dumb but so fun
Exclusive patent rights only last 20 years so in theory the Worlds owner can no longer get any money from them (filed 1998, so they're 6 years out of date).
He must have made millions thrn ?
greedy people always find a way to get more money
People often forget that patents on video game stuff really only protect the code and the names/flavor used to identify them. For example, the nemesis system used in Shadow of Mordor/War isn’t actually protected other than the code used to make it and calling it the nemesis system.
Not if Disney has something to say about that.
@@Idkpleasejustletmechangeitsteamboat Willie would disagree.
Really added to the feel since this is mostly just fake stuff

This has to be one of my favorite channels on the site. The topics and humor are always on point and these videos are so comfortable to watch
back to the googy room we go
You come off as Ratlobber’s more chill older brother, in the best way possible.
(this was not directed to Redlyne btw, I actually admire the fact that he didn't feed the rumours, so thank you for that)
Bro you honestly could narrate audiobooks and I'd listen all day. Excellent voicework and videos as always!
Redlyne is the definition of Quality > Quantity. Love your vids man.
Truly this, I was thinking the exact same, the quality and dedication really shows in his videos, and they're really comfortable to watch
He just copied a Nexpo video on the same topic and made a redo with AI. This is no quality, is near the line of plagiarism. Even the thumbnail omg
@@danielflorez3762 Care to explain exactly where is the use of AI evidenced here? As far as I'm aware Redlyne even explores these games by himself, hence the extra amount of time they take
Also, big surprise, more than one person making a video about the same topic in a platform chock full of all kinds of content? no way...
Having been one of those weirdos hanging out in a virtual world (but nowhere near as successful as the guys in this video), it's unbelievably fun.
your videos are so good to watch while playing runescape
I absolutely love your Killer 7 references in your videos. That is one of my all time favorite games and I always feel like it deserved more love

Dude hell yeah a new Redlyne video, I was just thinking about this channel the other day. I've loved every video done here. Always calming and very interesting, gives me Nexpo vibes.
Didn’t know this could even be a thing. The little one has been put to bed and the misses is asleep, time for an amazing 1 hour with a beer and some haribos.

When it comes to patent trolls what usually happens when they go at large companies is that the companies tell them to screw off and it shows in the court filings, often with the patent troll losing. The only money its getting is from people not wanting to go to court and settling.
i used to be obsessed with cult video games when i was younger, so hearing about kanye quest, the aumsoft game, and worlds again was super nostalgic. ive never heard of the other segments tho so it was really cool to hear about those!!! the amount of research and time u put into ur videos never ceases to amaze me :)
The twin flames one is so particularly vile, I wouldn't wish my gender dysphoria on anyone, much less vulnerable women.

about the bit at around 54:00, the part about not trusting anyone, it's absurd how we went from "stranger danger" and other such PSA and common sense about not trusting anyone online, to where now kids will just give their own ID and other identifiers to anyone who'll just ask.
Dang your hypnosis got me, I couldn't stop myself from liking the video.
The sudden turn with the hypnotist VR chat woman hit me like a truck. Now, that escalated quickly.
I remember Sappho… Yeah, I forgot about that. But I do actually remember hearing about this.
Even Nexialist (I've been concurrently online with Nex before) really just kinda chills these days.
i hate video essays that are too serious over smth clearly that isn’t as weird as they’re trying to make it seem 😓 love this video man, keep it up really entertaining and well edited all while being able to not take it too seriously!
