      whenever i build an engine i run it for 5-10 minutes and change the oil and filter just to make sure that any "slag" is out of the engine. then i drive a few days and check the oil and filter again.

    imagine going through all that--pulling the engine, starting to tear it down, breaking the clutch in the process--only to find out it just needed a valve job. i would need one or several stiff drinks if that were me. props to you, mr. martin, for sticking it through, when lesser men would have given up.

    For those who don’t have the option of pulling an engine more or less just for fun, I can’t recommend getting an oil analysis enough. Take a sample of your oil, either between services or while changing the oil, and mail it off to the lab. It’s a great low financial cost and low time cost option. They can detect trace amounts of metals and identify issues before you even notice an issue, such as hearing a problem.

    Note to the comment section: When installing an EJ/EZ always check for clutch engagement prior to finishing the install and plumbing all your lines up. Will save you a lot of headache.

  • @Jakanddaxter1999

    Helpful tip for anyone trying to remove a pull type release bearing so you can reinstall. Press down on the release bearing so it compresses into the pressure plate, then insert a flathead screwdriver in between the bearing and the pressure plate and twist and the bearing will be able to be removed. Then you can chuck it back on the gearbox input snout like a new one would go and reinstall.

    • @jibbsey
      @jibbsey Рік тому

      Can't you just remove the pivot shaft from the fork and remove the fork from the bearing like normal on an STI 6spd? Then just remove the bearing from the pressure plate assembly once the motor is out?

    • @Jakanddaxter1999
      @Jakanddaxter1999 Рік тому

      @@jibbsey This is to remove the bearing after the engine is pulled out, not during. It means you can stick it back on the snout when the motor is reinstalled and use it like a new unit would go it.

    I had a forged CP Piston EJ257 in my old 07 Legacy and that thing sounded like a diesel engine, that was with the required .003" piston to wall clearance, stock is .0015 IIRC. I ran it for nearly 100k before just retiring it for a rust free 06 Legacy. This time around I just went with a stock new short block when building it. I enjoy the quite engine as a daily and it really doesn't need the forged pistons for what I'm doing with it. :)

    I don't get into the denial phase. If it sounds bad, i just test the oil (i check this every change), coolant and check my vibration recordings. If all three come out with issues. Then i have to take it apart. I take the engines apart (based on kms on road) anyways, but if those three warning lights pop, i have an issue. 9 times out of 10, it was justified and the 6 times i was wrong, it turned out to be a faulty oil check, loose "microphone" or a gasket installation issue. Given that i've never blown an engine under normal uses, i think it's a reasonable thing to do.

    The thing I've noticed about forged pistons is that unless you're really putting it under load, they don't actually warm up and stop slapping. Like a daily driver with forged pistons, the slap will be more dependent on weather than coolant temp. So towing with forged pistons, that probably warmed them up nicely and were nice and quiet. You might find in future that cruising around unloaded they may slap again.

    Mate i felt your pain watching this. I had a motor built last year, 2.8 stroker, haltech elite, spent money on all the safety etc.. Within 6 weeks heard a knock, still had full oil pressure, drove fine, full compression, perfect plugs and no warnings on the Haltech. It was knocking when cold and would disappear when hot. Workshop decided to strip the motor down, found 4 corner scuffing on one of the pistons... the metal from the scuff accumalated and hardened at the bottm and the piston would hit it on start up. We went through of research/investigation as to why we had this issue, we found that the lower part of the bore wasnt machined completely to spec... We just honed the bore, machined to spec, the rest were fine, still the same spec as original, fresh set of pistons, everything covered under warranty and we were good.The whole situation took 6 months to rectify, took me a long time to regain faith in the car as i was scared to go through it again.

    As soon as I heard the noise, it sounded *exactly* like my old EJ25's valves, right now. One valve is out of lash, and it sounds like a lot of tappa tappa until it warms up.
    Whenever I pull it for the leaky rear main (third time in 3 months because i'm a doofus), it's getting another adjustment. It'll be fine.
    The bigger issue for me is gonna be the 4EAT slamming every time it downshifts to get up a hill or to pass. That's tiring. Gotta put in my spare valvebody, and rebuild the old one.

    My daily Toyota had an engine with these shim under bucket valves. When it got to higher mileages it would make this awful knocking noise in the top end. Sometimes giving it some oil would quieten it down. Recently after 240,000 miles and 17 years the head gasket failed. I put a used engine in the car and stripped down the old one. The only wear I found was in the bores. Everything else inside the engine was immaculate including the top end. Maybe the buckets were noisy but there was no damage to them.

    Marty, i'm at 6:52 and i bet it's the same reason, why MY EZ30 ist out right now... i think the chain tensioner doesn't do it's job properly... you should have opened the oil fill in and listen in there, if the sound comes from there. I'll edit this comment again after the video.
    Okay watched all... you know what is weird? To make such an enormous noise... the gap must be measured in mm :D what were the tolerances you found and measured? Its better to get them a bit on the wider side, bc a turbo engine is producing much more heat, resulting in more material stretching. the factory setting is: Inlet 0,14-0,24 and exhaust 0,30-0,40 mm. I'd let the exhaust be near 0,4 and the inlet at about 0,22mm.
    But i can't believe, that this was the reason of the noise. Listen carefully, if the sound appears again and if it appers only on hot engine. My EZ30 in my 05 BP had a very bad noise only when the engine got hot. Cold start was quiet, nothing. Adding thicker oil removed that effect...and the noise came with higher temps... went back to thinner oil and it was there again. In my case measured every valve and everything is within spec... so i think, your problem is the LH chain tensioner, that gets stuck sometimes and lets the chain rattle badly.

    Funny you ended up suspecting the valve clearances, I was joking to myself that it had the same issue my 2000 Kawasaki Ninja ZX9r had after rebuilding the top end. It started, was noisy, thought "it's fine, probably the CCT", gave it a little blip of the throttle and the noise got much worse.
    Turned out to be the only shim I didn't need to change had somehow dislodged from its place (didn't know these were shimless), so it must have been on top of the valve spring, and caused one of the collets to come out, luckily just the one. Although the valve had dropped slightly it seems there was no damage, I replaced the collets, put it back together and all has been fine since.
