2-storey and attic, 5-bay Tudor country house Baronial stair tower; 2-storey and basement wing. Ashlar with droved and stugged margins. Deep base course, moulded string course and bracketed eaves cornice. Corbels, hoodmoulds with label stops, stone transoms and mullions, chamfered reveals and moulded arrises.
Originally known as 'Laurence (or Lawrence) Park', but with both names appearing on a map dated 1922. The Thomas Hamilton attribution comes from a group of drawings exhibited at the Academy in 1828, the group included Cumstoun House with ribbed vaulting to canted window ceilings similar to Lathallan House. Sadly, Hamilton's architect's drawings are lost. Thomas Hamilton and William Burn were the first Scottish members or RIBA, they were elected in 1835. Hamilton is famous as a pioneer of the Greek Revival in Scotland, and his works include The Royal High School, Edinburgh (1825), Cumstoun House (1828) and Falcon Hall, Edinburgh (c1830). Much of the fine detail of Lathallan House has been vandalised, but the present (2003) owner was raised in the house and many of the interior details given above are from his memory of the rooms as they once appeared. The house was purchased, fully furnished, by his step-grandfather for the sum of £5,000.

Fantastic video and its a real shame to see buildings like this go to ruin. If you get the chance you should try and get over to Little Cumbrae Island just off Millport. On the west side of the island is an abandoned lighthouse with 3 lighthouse keepers houses, out- buildings and a large generator shed.Buildings are in quite good condition and the views over to Arran are stunning. The island is privately owned but the owners don't mind people visiting the island.

+MrScotia That sounds very interesting MrScotia I haven't been to Millport in a long time but sounds worthwhile taking a trip to Little Cumbrae Island. Thanks for the tip :)

No problem and if you do manage to get over then there is the extra treat of a 13th century castle which can be accessed at low tide from Little Cumbrae.

Thanks Forgotten Scotland, it's well worth a visit. Yeah to think it was the dream house of a wealthy shipbroker to now being left in a ruin.

Spent a good few years working here back in the late 70s as a kid from ages 11 up to 15 mostly summer time, £1.50 for a 6 hr shift. Hard graft but he threw in a free 2 course meal thanks to Betty - (mince and tatties followed by custard and apple crumble to die for)..Many a laugh with and at big Jimmy specially when at the table scoffing down the hearty meal..Meals were had in the smaller cottage that sat to the side of it..
He came into his own when serving local punters looking for some wood - this wood stock was cut down to various sizes from old railway sleepers 2 x 2s etc we even sold wee picket fencing painted white.. Shouting, cursing and a lot of hand waving, was the norm - to me it was like he didn't need the money and from a giant of a man in his late 60s must have curled up the shoes from many potential buyers..
Give him the money quick so we can get out of here!!
What a character, just as big as the house he lived in..Many, many stories that I could right a wee book about the place lol.
Not surprised the place burnt down as the big house was full of sawdust stored in most of the rooms, that was the rumour back then (not many had seen in the big house - only what a few late uncles told me)
We only worked in grounds pulling nails from wood to recycle back to locals. Nothing was waisted, even the old rusted nails were scrapped. I remember my first couple of days was spent pulling nails and throwing them away once removed from the wood. This quickly stopped once I heard the wrath of Shanks "WHIT THE F**K ARE YOU DOING!!!! PICK AWE THEM BACK UP AND FILL THEM BUCKETS WI THEM OR YER UP THE ROAD!! No talking back I was like a hoover in the long grass round about my feet.
I kept going back over the year during the summer months - Learned to drive a car there etc etc etc
What it taught me was to stick in at school which I did 35 years in Engineering and now a Supervisor..Hmmm no need for the shouting and cursing or flailing arms though - don't think I would get away with it lol ..But hard skinned hands and good memories thanks to Jimmy Shanks..

If you're ever near here again then you should take a look 'inside' Victoria Halls in Linlithgow, or what's left of it...
