    Three things: the black seat belts came with that basic interior in 1982. The car has a radio and front speakers. That is what the option book has. That’s a base crossfire ws7 car with t tops of course. The cat is the corvette cat with high flow, that came standard on the 82 crossfire.

    As someone who prides oneself on catching mistakes and special effects, my hat is off to you! I will just add that the trans am with the damaged and taped up antenna base is likely due to the scene where it goes under the Dorsey trailer. They likely didn't think to remove it before doing the stunt and damaged it. They did eventually remove it, though, because you can see that it is clearly sitting next to the actress in the passenger seat during that scene. I love this channel and will continue to watch! Great content, Joe!

      I noticed what looks like an Antenna That You Can see in the backseat from 19:45-20:33 to the right of Colleen Camp while they where under the truck .

      @@mattcox3373 I am sure it was eventually scrapped. The cars that were donated to the school by GM were a similar situation like the train wreck cars for Knight Rider. Once they were done being used by the School for training they had to be destroyed. The car was still there when I completed school, but all the cars that were there had stickers on them that they could not be registered, and once they were done being used for educational purposes they had to disposed of. There may be parts lurking some were that students took off or a instructor took off and kept for themselves.

    On early 3rd-gens base interior came stock with charcoal seat belts regardless of interior color. You had to pay extra for color-keyed seat belts. Also since the car has Cross-Fire Injection those came with the smaller high-flow monolith catalytic converter in '82. Only the carbureted cars had the old large restrictive pellet style converter that was carried over from the 2nd-gen.
    I always found it interesting how the first two SATB movies used highly optioned SE Trans Ams and the third used a nearly no optioned standard Trans Am.

    Another idea for those numbers is that they filmed the scenes with different cars one after the other to save time and money, without needing to clean it all off. The number on the car helps identifying easily which take looks best. Or especially for the stunt scenes where you only have a stunt driver, they were filming with a different crew at the same time where the "Hero crew" with the main actor was filming, to not mix up the cars for this crew they were labelled.

    Also of note, Jerry Reed did not provide any music for smokey 3. Lee Greenwood did "Bandit Express" heard during the montage. This also proves that Jerry originally had no part in the movie. There was even a newspaper ad from Marion county Florida where it's stated that burt, sally and Jerry wouldn't be in it. Speaking of Marion county Florida, the 1981 Malibu police car seen right before Jerry's "they never learn" 4th wall break was a real Marion county sheriff's car.

    As far as I can tell, all the front "plates" are decals. They probably started off production with all the cars unnumbered, but then started numbering them to tell which is which for stunt work and hero shots. Probably because they kept getting damaged so stick a number on it and tell the director #1 is in the shop and to use #2.

    Another way to pick which car was used is look at the back seat, one car has a smooth vinyl or fabric trim and another car has the corded trim.
    It's also worth mentioning that all the scenes with Jerry Reed were filmed AFTER the movie was "completed" as test screenings that had Jackie Gleason playing the Bandit bombed badly. The antenna in the back seat when they're under the trailer is a fiberglass CB antenna, alot thicker than the standard broadcast antenna on the fender. The CB antenna also moved across the rear decklid in certain scenes.

    I noticed around 1710 when you're looking at the small bird on the hood, the Confederate flag plate is upside down on a car.
    The stars are upside down, it's supposed to be right side up.
    The center star is the easiest to see.
    Also the scene before that when a car is spinning around, it's got different wheels on it?
    I really enjoy this video, I'm going to get back into it now..

    Yeah but the orange truck is a Ford L-series! Universal Orlando used a mockup Ford L-series for the Earthquake attraction and one day I was there and they were using an L-series to pull a tram!!! The producers were the ones who picked the car makes. TV producer Glen Larson favored GM, others used Fords. You'd always see large Ford trucks in background scenes of tons of Universal TV shows.

    The radio antenna I believe is because that car was not a radio delete car but was a higher optioned car that had the tan interior swapped in probably after destroying one of the cars.

  • @That_AMC_Guy
    @That_AMC_Guy Місяць тому

    Way back in the day, black seatbelts in a coloured interior was fairly common. One used to have to "step up" and order the "custom" seat belts that matched the interior color. That could be the case here, but I'm not 100%. I can't find with a cursory Google search an 82-83 Trans Am options list.
    Also the rear speakers being absent might not make the car a "radio delete" car. By the 1980's, most cars came standard with at least an AM radio especially (one would think) something as upmarket as a Trans Am. My money would be on this being a fairly low-option Trans Am (to keep costs down) as it has the base interior and probably the basic Audio option of an AM radio. Since AM in 1982-1983 was still monaural.... there would be no need for multiple speakers and the car would've come with a single speaker in the dash.
    Also, that front license "plate" looks more like a big decal.
    Re: the numbered cars. I noticed this years ago on the DVD.... it's quite visible. I wonder if it has anything to do with how the productions were split. Like you say, initially, the movie was Smokey IS the Bandit and after that tested poorly; they went back and shot the scenes with Jerry Reed. Notice though, that in most (maybe all?) scenes WITH Jerry Reed and the car.... you don't see any number. They were obviously filming later. Could they have gotten back one of the cars used in the initial filming? Sadly.... most of the people who could fill in these blanks are no longer with us.

    well done again Joe! While this entry into the Bandit franchise was not up to par, i always found it interesting that the movie we got, was not exactly what was filmed. Imagine this... the original movie -Smokey is the Bandit- was soooo bad, that they went back, re-shot with Reed & Camp,re-edited to get the movie we now have. And this is considered the worst of the 3. So just how bad was the original? Wondering if a copy exists after all this time. There is footage with Gleason Dressed as "the Bandit"...so....???

    • @nealpatterson629
      @nealpatterson629 Рік тому

      The legend is that Jackie Gleason was so embarrassed by the poor showing at the preview screening that he bought the negative of all his Bandit footage, put it in a vault, and forbade anyone to show it. I think that's pretty far fetched. More likely, the footage was simply trashed by Universal so that the original version could never be recreated. I think if the footage exists, it would have surfaced by now.

    You pointed out that even the car used for the close-ups with Jerry Reed and Colleen Camp was fairly basic and beat up. I can't help but wonder if this was the case because the Jerry Reed re-shoots occurred months after the original Jackie-Gleason-as-the-Bandit scenes were shot. Perhaps they originally had a nicely appointed Trans Am for the close-ups, but by the time they went back to do the reshoots, they only had the various stunt cars which were pretty beat up. I know this is all speculation and there's no way to be sure, but they always had a nicely appointed hero car for the first two Bandit films. Or it could just be that this production was done on the cheap.

    There were 4 cars used in Smokie and The Bandit 3. According to my research they were 83' models. Charcoal seatbelts possibly factory it's rare to see charcoal with tan but possibly. 3 of the 4 cars were Wrecked up so bad or modified to the point there was nothing left buy the end of filming. The location of the surviving car is unknown witch is the hero car it was unnumbered with car stereo. Car #1 mostly a high speed action car definitely didn't have antenna, or radio, or hubcaps and had big letter dirty bandit plate, lots of undercarriage damage was the least damage of the two action cars "kinda"... Car #2 action car had it's taped on antenna (aka no radio), "sometimes" had big letter plate not dirty and not only was the exhaust shifted over but so was the rear axle shifted to the driver side along with the front fender damage from hitting Smokie, This car was severely damaged and why it was in the jump scene at the beginning of the movie but shot at the end. The last car was an unnumbered highly modified stunt car was the one with the modifications to the suspension and towbar, Not even certain if this was a true Firebird underneath.
    As for the question proposed...
    I'm certain car #2 was a 100% unoperable by the end of filming. #1 Only one possible to head over Knight Rider, but I seriously doubt it... The highly modified stunt car, as well was purposely built for the movie, almost certain it was crushed afterwards... Maybe some parts saved out of all the 3 the cars for Knight Rider it's possible, but they were all in very very bad condition at the end of filming. Oh and no the hero car did not go Knight Rider... However nobody knows what happened to it.

    My first car was a 82 Firebird v-6, t-top, and 4 speed manual transmission. I’m pretty sure it was originally a radio delete car because the antenna was an aftermarket electric unit mounted in the rear drivers side instead of in the front passenger fender. Also the trim piece where the radio was had been cut for a standard din radio and not the large opening that most GM cars had at that time for the factory radio they offered. It did have the cloth covers in the rear interior panels but if I recall, the speaker holes looked to be cut by hand and not factory openings. I’ve always wondered how many radio delete f-bodies were made in those days.
