Well at least one of the convertible KITTs survived. Have to admit, I do actually prefer convertible than SPM. Pity it didn't appear as often as SPM. Though given the choice, I'd take KITT in normal mode as he always appeared any day.

Unfortunately, I can’t agree with you. I prefer super pursuit mode. Why because in the previous video about the super pursuit mode car they made it a point to point out that people hated it because it was a rip off of the transformers when in actuality, when you think about it convertible, kit was the one that was a rip off of the transformers. as well, it was possible to make a Trans Am a convertible. Where did the fiberglass cover come from after the top went down into the trunk? Apparently comes out of thin air, which is more of a rip off of the transformers than the super pursuit mode ever was.

@@cia1209 Fair enough, we don't have to agree on everything. I honestly think they're both a bit over the top and neither make much sense. Hence why I'd take normal KITT any day. But I personally choose convertible given the choice regardless.

I absolutely loved KITT’s Super Pursuit Mode. Even though the convertible mode was a neat feature, I didn’t car for it too much since it didn’t help Micheal or KITT fight crime. The convertible mode was just for Micheal’s leisurely pleasure. Now I did like how they made the transformation from hard top to convertible. They really did a fantastic job making it look believable. It’s a total shame that so many of these KITT cars were destroyed after the show’s cancellation. Regardless of the fact that a bunch of these Trans Am’s were from that Pontiac train derailment, these vehicles should’ve been put on display somewhere.

Did they know at the beginning of the fourth season that it was the end? Maybe you can do a video breakdown on how and why it ended the way it did (at the appropriate time of course). I was lucky enough to see the convertible KITT when it was at the Cars Of The Stars museum in Scotland. It was positioned across from James Bond's Aston Martin from Goldfinger, the car from The Saint, and randomly a police car from Robocop. No photography allowed in the museum unfortunately. They had a second museum in Keswick in England as well, all owned by a retired dentist called Peter Nelson I think his name was. They also had scripts and a KITT voice modulator from another car. However, they also just had a standard KITT in great condition and a fairly beat up A-Team van delivered outside so I did manage to get a few photos of those. This was in 2004 I think, before I owned a digital camera, but I'm happy to try scan the photos and send them if you like👍

The Convertible Roof - It was first added to the show’s fourth season, by pressing the “C” button on KITT’s dash, Michael could bring the top down and KITT became a convertible. First used in Episode 70, “Knight of the Juggernaut, Part II.”

Everyone is familiar with the term, "Jump the shark." I propose adding a phrase to our lexicon, that being, "Went Super Pursuit Mode", as this feature (and the convertible mode) were features that took KITT and "Knight Rider" away from the core of what they had been. We could add "Went convertible" but a convertible car is a common thing that could apply to dozens of shows and not in a bad way.

It's a bit mind blowing that they made a "working" convertible process. I just thought it was people lifting up a roof and then pushing a cover over the back seats. And yes it probably was not too dissimilar BUT the thought that they went through a theoretical way of doing it .. wow! My grainy VHS copy barely shows the rear window in place during the first C mode.

I remember watching Knight Rider in its initial run, about how every season KITT would change somehow, i.e. the voicebox light, one TV instead of two, the flip-up lights that never flipped up anymore, Bonnie then April then Bonnie, new gadgets depending on that week's story, the bizarre introduction of RC3, KITT gets destroyed by Goliath, KITT gets destroyed by the acid pit, the convertible top, Super Pursuit Mode . . . ALL THIS ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY for a car that is basically a crime lab on wheels for a private detective who drives it. Isn't that what Michael really is? A private detective?
And obviously, we the audience never knew what was going on behind the scenes to bring all this wonder to the small screen. Seeing KITT become a convertible was utter magic, and going into SPM was the most exciting thing on television. Just how did newbie RC3 and the street gang not only rebuild KITT (without any prior knowledge of FLAG and the Knight Foundation) but added a convertible option? Where did that roof go, anyway?
No matter, this was Knight Rider, the coolest show on TV. And over thirty years later, we still enjoy watching it and picking it apart.

I live in Chicago and this episode of yours brought back an old memory. I had the day off and a girlfriend and I got on my motorcycle and rode down to Buckingham Fountain. Since I had a motorcycle stolen just a few months earlier I had a Heavy Duty Steel Cable Lock. We parked just west of the fountain and walked around and then ended up at the beach for a few hours. When we got back my Bike was gone and I was very upset. So, I noticed a Cop and we walked over and I told him my bike was stolen. He asked what it was and when I told him he started laughing. I started to get mad at his insensitively and he realized I was getting mad. He said it was towed and he asked us to walk with him. It seems that it was interfering with their filming so they used a forklift and straps and moved it behind some bushes. There were no signs about any filming. My girl and I had a great day at the Lakefront and now a story to tell.

Great information as usual! I was never a fan of the Super Pursuit Mode, but the convertible mode was nice. I wonder why it was necessary to build two convertibles? Convertible mode wasn’t even used all that much except for some slow “money shot” drive-bys-usually when Michael and KITT are relaxing, chit-chatting a bit. I don’t recall it ever being used in a chase scene, etc. It seems like one convertible car would have been sufficient. But I guess they had a reason.

AUTOFORM also made a convertible Trans Am at the time, with a ragtop, then Pontiac sold it in the dealerships. I own a 84 convertible that’s Black and Gold. It’s only a 2 seater like Michael’s and has very little storage. It is very rare but the newer Factory convertibles were a little more practical with an electric top and back seats.

It does not surprise me that Straman did the Kitt car Trans-Am conversion to convertible. Based in Orange County California, Straman was the one you would send any car back then to be converted into a convertible. Especially high end cars. When Ferrari introduced the Testarossa convertible option, they did not actually build the car as a convertible. They would give you a conversion kit, then the Ferrari would be sent to Straman, who would do the $80,000.00 modification to your Testarossa. Straman was the go to company back then for the convertible transformation, no matter what car you drove.

When the Hoff drove around with his mighty head of hair blowing in the wind I thought he was too vulnerable to outside attacks. And Garth could have jumped in-you know he had form for jumping into moving vehicles and stealing them. So it seemed a stupid addition to Kit's special features. A few weeks ago, a lawyer was arrested in Canada for facilitating the sale of movie and TV cars, that were supposed to be destroyed. It has to do with California law defining them as not road worthy. The cars were sold in US and Canada. There is a public interest that some cars be preserved due to cultural or historic importance. I think about this when you talk about the train wreck cars.

You always give info that even those of us who have read about this for years did not know.I had never seen the Gold custom 84 Trans Am that Mr. Barris built.I have a nice book on Barris customs which shows spm kitt under construction and shows one of the blind drive seats.interesting that there were no pics of the gold 84.The construction plans were really a treat to see and thanks for sharing them!!Your video's are always a must see!!!

8:24 Cars of the Stars museum. One time during the early 2000s, we went to a car museum that had many TV/movie cars and vehicles. I can't remember what the museum was actually called as it was such a long time ago. Plus we weren't allowed to take photos. But now I'm wondering if it was Cars of the Stars. Cuz it had KITT there, although it wasn't convertible KITT as it had the full roof. And I remember it had the Season 3-4 dash. I always thought it may have been the actual Season 3-4 hero car. But after watching your videos, I'm not sure if it was anymore and may have just been a perfect replica of the Season 3-4 hero car.

Yeah, that gold TA 'vert was a standout at George's place. He was afraid to drive it anywhere for fear of a rock chip in the paint.
Tubby (Roy Johnson) was an interesting 'character', and sad in the end. For decades he refused to use any kind of filter or breathing apparatus when painting cars, and his severe health issues caused by years of inhalation of the old-style harsh paint materials that Barris' insisted on eventually killed him. He had a '60s Cadillac with over 1000 car nameplates on the exterior, and had lived in Barris' back shop for decades. Cool old guy, if not exactly 'admirable' for a few reasons.
    Oh, the stories I heard....

Just noticed at 0:09 the gold stripes on the trailer are not continuous but broken up at the angle. Wonder if that was always like that, never see much close ups. The gold KITTEN sure looks good, would have been neat to see it built into a functional KITT.

I would also love to hear more on The Juggernaut, or who actually built it!
I know it was built on a 1982 Dodge Power Ram 4x4 for the movie Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone. The vehicle was called The Scrambler in that film.
Knight Rider acquired it and modified the appearance for the season 4 two part pilot. Last I heard, it used to be displayed outside a rental car place in Valencia, CA. They scrapped the vehicle after it was completely rusted out.

The conversion mechanism just blew my mind. Before I used to think that the rear window was doing what it actually did. Then I thought that the fiberglass cover would just be a retractible peace, able to extend itself. But I was struggling to realize how the roof would hide. I thought it would rotate 180º, then the rear window would also stay hidden (above it) and that cover would just extend. But now that I see this, amazing.
As for the episodes, I think 8 is good enough (I thought it was less). KITT was mainly an action car, so probably wouldn't be a good move to have the convertible in more episodes... Well just like back almost two decades ago, I'm gonna start to think about convertibles again and if there's a way to actually do an even better and real KITT conversion style. Very sad that the Firebird is dead.

Yeah, I always wanted to see some action/stunt scene with the top down, but then Michael jumps in and the top goes up as they’re driving away. Anyway, that clearly wasn’t happening with a not-actual convertible that had a not-actual V8, lol! Plus, they must have trailered that car separately (with no roof) - and had to be extra careful with it...

Thank You so much for all Your hard work!
I loved Knight Rider when I was younger. I was able to go to the GM assembly plant many times to see Both the Firedbird-Trans Am and Camero-Z28 and the variations thereof made. The front of the factory was used in the first part of Mr. Mom as well I believe.
Was supposed to be Detroit in the film. On one of my tours of the factory, there was a guy there from Florida. He told me that he had been to the other plant in Florida. I didn't realize there was another plant until he told me. He said that the Van Nuys plant only made
T-Top cars. Where the Florida factory-made all of the Hard Top or Solid Roof cars. From what I could see looking around the Van Nuys plant, It seemed to be true. I also remember the first episode of Miami Vice and several other episodes, all hard hardtop cars. No
T-Tops! I don't know if that had to do with the differences in climate conditions in different parts of America. The Van Nuys Plant was also was Part of GM Canada " Canada Group " For what reason I never really understood. The sign in front of the factory was in red as opposed to the normal blue for the American factories. The factory is no longer there.
So sad to know GM is now unfortunately owned by the CCP. No longer American.

I'd love to see you give some more attention to the original nose they used in the presentation film; we see it off and on in the finished pilot episode, it makes its way into stock footage of KITT driving, and shows up in a ton of early publicity photos, yet it's still kind of a mystery.
