My own doctor has me on this same process and our goal is to eliminate my Lantus insulin therapy. I was having DKA with colitis attacks and my previous doctor just kept telling me that I have a lot of dietary sensitivity. I though my life was simply ending because of diabetes. Then he retired.
MY new doctor took me off of Invokana immediately and we started down a new path: No added sugar, mostly whole foods made at home. No more attacks and my insulin dose is down. I am 61 , 5' 11", 163 and I had an A1c test last week....8.3, but I have also had surgery recently which makes sugar management difficult at best. the last few days my fasting BG when waking was under 120. This man is so correct, I am in a whole plant base lifestyle for many years now, but I completely agree with what he is saying. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 38 years old and took medication for 10 years. According to my doctor, I needed to be on medication for the rest of my life, but I started to do my own research, and with a lot trial and error I was able to reverse diabetes and many other issues for that matter. I took my last medication on February 19 2007 and as today I am diabetes free. I don’t eat any processed foods, oils or store bought bread. My wife makes a bread with oats, flax and psyllium husk and that’s the only bread I eat. My last meal of the day is at 5pm and don’t eat breakfast. So I do 18,20 almost every day. I do a 24 hours fast once in a while. I am 65 years old 5’ 11 and weight 150 pounds. My A1c is 5.2 and feel better now than I did when I was 30. I exercise 6 days a week. I know there is a big fight in the social media about different diets and lifestyles, but I say, take the best that is scientifically proven and apply it to your life and situation.

You can google it, our grains are sprayed with glyphosate. This might be the problem. There must be something else like environmental poisons, e.g. glyphosate that is almost in all our foods. A poison that stops the pancreas from working properly. That's why practically all Americans and Europeans are pre-diabetic. Same in India where they also use glyphosate. Diabetes cannot be caused simply by eating carbs and sweets. In the fifties and sixties, all children were eating sweets like mad. Near every school was a sweet shop. But no young people had diabetes. Among African tribes which eat directly from nature diabetes is unknown.

I took off 40lbs Keto and fasting 24-36 hours twice a week felt fantastic and the labs came back horrible.
I still do low carb and fast only 14-16 hours and I am slowly pulling off weight game after the lose and horrible labs.

Very clear and informative biology lesson. My takeaway from all these videos from various sources is that diabetes is a form of ' food jail ' where innocent victims are condemned to a life sentence of metabolic hell. The food industry should be faced with a huge class action law suit for the hidden sugar in food. They should be made to pay the medical bills of diabetic induced illnesses like sight deterioration, heart surgery, renal therapy etc. Then make it LAW to stop government subsidies for sugar industry.

I am a Type 2 diabetic, and my doctor also told me to not fast, they gave me a diet schedule, but I have seen many doctors on UA-cam told about fasting. Which was completely opposite of what my doctor recommended. I am still researching more. For 2 days I didn't take medicine and ate healthy food and went to the gym regularly, my blood sugar level was still the same as when I was taking medicine (It was 136).
Now I have lost about 3 Kg (in a month), I feel great, I am off medicine, and my blood sugar is normal (I believe as I lose more fat, I will get back to normal BS level).
Also since I started healthy food (mostly organic) I am kind of addicted to these. I haven't had any kind of soda or processed food for over 6 months. And I don't even have craving for it anymore.
Eat healthily, walk after eating, and stay away from processed food, sugar is poison and stay away from it. And Exercise regularly.

I took a hemoglobin A1C test January 24, 2023. The following month on the morning of February 7, 2023 My doctor told me that my hemoglobin A1C came back 15.1. The doctor prescribed medications but I refuse the Insulin and Metformin so that I can reverse the diabetes naturally and I had immediately changed my eating habits. My doctor was alarmed at me for not wanting to take any meds and started to warn me about all the horrific things that could happen to me because of my high A1C without any meds.
Fast forward on April 26, 2023 I had my 3 month hemoglobin A1C and my results on MAY 1, 2023 is 8.1. My doctor was astounded at my test results. Also since February I have lost around 40lbs. I am still eating clean and will be for the rest of my life and have also included walking (6 miles) 3 to 4 times a week. I'm looking forward to my next hemoglobin A1C in 3 months.
My fasting glucose in the mornings ranges around 85-92 and 2 hours after dinner ranges around 83-95. I fast for breakfast. Lunch time is between 12p and 2p. Dinner is between 6p and 7p. I use to check my glucose a lot more in the beginning, But these days I only check twice on Mon-Fri and I just recently stop checking on the weekends.

My problems started when I was 50 and had a double-whammy of menopause and hypothyroidism. I felt like my metabolism had packed its bag and left. I rapidly gained weight (two dress sizes in 3 months!) for no apparent reason, and when I went to my GP to ask why this was happening - and continued to happen, despite me increasing my already significant daily physical activity and cutting my calorific intake - I was sent away because I 'wasn't obese'. I've never been able to lose the weight that gathered predominantly on my stomach and partly on my back, and have only managed to hold it relatively stable by eating only two meals a day in a window of 6-8 hours. Recently, this tactic has begun to fail and I've been told I'm borderline pre-diabetic, so I'll have to try something else. I suspect having my gallbladder removed has added an extra component to this, but the good old NHS doesn't concern itself about the ramifications of such surgery or offer any useful advice on the subject.

@@violetdcosta6501 For me personally I primarily drink water. I often currently start my day with two cups of black coffee. I will say though I have quit drinking coffee for periods and believe it’s something best left out if one can. There are worse things but I don’t think i believe it’s necessarily “good” for us really. I never take it with sugar or anything though. Sometimes I will have plain tea, specifically green. And every now and then I get some flavored unsweetened seltzer water, which is kind of like a soda for me. I grew up drinking soda so I kinda miss some fizz sometimes lol. I will also from time to time get a bottle of kombucha. Not too often though. You have to watch the carbs and added sugars on those though some brands are really bad. You can find something around 10g or less if you shop around and read labels. Get one low as possible. Kombuchas at least contain some live cultures good for digestive health vs a juice which will be high in sugar anyway. Combine them with before or after a workout if you can. Don’t get caught up in the sugar free stuff like diet soda, Crystal Light, or anything with sucralose, that stuff is awful for digestion. I can recall my guts and digestion were really messed up during my diet soda drinking years. If you mitigate your sugar intake in general drinks that are really light with just a bit of flavor will start to “pop” better and feel more refreshing over time. A sugary diet with a lot of artificial flavor scorches and dulls up our taste buds and it actually takes some time to regain taste sensitivity. Just keep in mind the primary function of drinking is hydration not flavor so the closer you can always stay to water the better. And I specifically prefer spring water.

My older sister bought the low fat thing in the late '70s in a big way. She was terrified of being fat, so she thought this style of eating was salvation, never thinking about all the sugar she was consuming in all the processed foods (Snackwell cookies anyone?) She was also a smoker--another effort to not eat. Fast forward 40 years, she managed to maintain her weight for the most part but in her mid 60s she lost her mind to dementia. After trying to research exactly what KIND of dementia she had (doctors couldn't pin point, just dementia) I found out how important fats are to your brain health. All those years of eating as close to NO FAT as she could manage--you know, no egg yokes, no avocados, etc etc--I think was hugely impactful in what happened to her. It infuriates me that the government put out the crap of the 'food pyramid' that was so, so wrong.

@@nicslakis5043 I had heard that coconut oil has been used with some degree of success too. We tried everything including giving her coconut oil capsules. She got to the point of not really eating or having an appetite. What an irony. She wanted to stay thin all her life and when she was dying, she finally achieved the goal of being under 100 Lbs. Just dietary change has made a profound difference in my eAG levels when my doc increased Metformin and added Rebelsys. This was the tipping and turning point in my life. I immediately Cut down on carbs, added exercise, started sleeping well. I saw the difference in just over 2 weeks. I will continue this process for next 3 months for sure to see reduced A1C, and have to continue the regimen for the rest of my life. Thanks doc🙏

I started following vegan diet, fasting and light exercise per a teams of doctor, dietitian and exercise expert that I have. They have same principles as Dr. Fung. I lost fifty pounds in six months. Yesterday was the first time my BMI was 25.

Dr. Fung, your explanation of urinating causing a flushing of a small portion of glucose from one's pancreas, does explain, for me, why me drinking a lot of water, has usually caused some weight loss. That fact is causing me to start some serious intermittent fasting to assist reversal of current my overweight condition. The simple answer to all this is simply to keep one's mouth shut for as long as is possible, .....and do it on a regular basis!

Dr. Jason Fung, you really explain how the macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) are transformed in the body in an excellent way ! Really ! Also, you end off by saying there is not a one size fits all, but rather indivualized approaches .
To anyone who should read my comment : Dr. Jason Fung explains to us all how the storage of sugars and the effects transfer between 31:00-42 in this video of how the body
    works... Brilliant !!

LOVE the advice and perspective of Dr Jason. My husband is 63 and has recently been diagnosed type 2 diabetic and having high cholesterol. What baffles me is that he is probably closer to underweight, he is supper active and fit and has been very careful about what he eats (no sugar for years!) What could he still do to reverse his type 2 diabetes?
his family has a history of type 2 diabetes.

You raise an important question. I'm looking into this theory of battling diabetes as only a lifestyle disease, but the biological element of inheritance still remains. There is a lot we still do not understand about how we come to "be" as humans and things we can't explain. Perhaps in those shadows are the answers of family history or something else. I see Dr. Fung's approach as straightforward and hope he is right. I also understand universal principles are rare and for an unknown number of diabetics, this approach may just not be possible.
