    Great video! As a kid, I thought it was cool that the GI. JOE Team represented all different types of Americans of different ethnicities and sexes and it was never an issue, and while Spirit and Quick-Kick are indeed stereotypes, at least there aren't negative ones. Having some Native blood on my father's side of the family, I actually liked seeing some representation of First Nations people as action heroes, even if it wouldn't be considered politically correct today; it was the 1980s and they were at least trying. There is no reason why Spirit and Quick-Kick should be discontinued as characters in the G.I. JOE franchise, they can easily be finessed into more modern incarnations without any trouble and shouldn't be given the "Song Of The South" treatment from Hasbro.

    Honestly, no. It has been proven many time that characters that started off as unfortunate or outdated stereotype can still work within modern time, just with a few or more good changes or update.
    Spirit and Quick Kick are no exception. Spirit I can see toning down a bit on the whole Native American stereotype ( Which I think part of the video shown here perfectly captures that ) while Quick Kick I can see him being the same from the cartoon, since he was kinda funny and memorable. Just give him some shoes and giving him some good movie references that won't be outdated or cringe, and he'll fit right in.

    Larry Hama is of Asian decent and a Vietnam War veteran. Hama has written the majority of G.I. Joe comics starting with Marvel and right up to today's run with whatever company has the rights now. Hama also wrote the file cards for the toy line except for Crystal Ball, Stephen King wrote his file card and created the character for his son. Also Snake Eyes was not Storm Shadow's enemy in the TV show due to Snake Eyes being mute. Hama also stated that he should have made Snake Eyes of Asian heritage instead of white. This is why Snake Eyes is Asian in his stand alone G.I. Joe live action movie.

    • @StoriesFromTheToyshelf
      @StoriesFromTheToyshelf  Місяць тому +2

      Yup Larry Hama truly is the godfather of modern gijoe. And almost all the credit goes to him and rightfully so. Although I did read somewhere that he initially did not agree that Snake Eyes be Asian. That he intentionally made him white. As Storm Shadow was supposedly his choice to be an asian good guy. Hence his joining Cobra was all a ploy to seek out his true masters killer. But he quickly changed his tune and backed the movie. Which leads me to think that he was probably asked to be supportive of the movie or he was paid to be. Either way. The movie flopped because the producers just didn't get it. They didn't understand the character of Snake Eyes regardless of race. But that's just my opinion on the matter 👍👍👍

    While I love ad own both characters in many incarnations, I have never understood why GI Joe never had any Chinese characters... And to my Chinese friends as well.

    To be honest I never liked Quick Kick in either the comic/cartoon/or toyline. In his debut in G. I. Joe #45, he had some gall to cast aspersions at the outfits of both Snake-Eyes and Spirit Iron Knife. Some nerve given HIS field outfit- the Dreadnoks dress more decently.
    In the cartoons, kids were to Believe he can actually take on AND defeat Storm-Shadow! Good thing Marvel Comics' G. I. Joe #52 had Larry Hama show Storm-Shadow making very short work of him (I think Lady Jaye would've lasted longer, and I Don't like Lady J).
    In the cartoons he was more or less a Jackie Chan wannabe, always a smartmouth.
    A shame too given that Larry Hama gave him the first name of MacArthur, after US General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, a double play as Quick Kick's Japanese-Korean. In both Japan & South Korea, General MacArthur remains well regarded as he served as SCAP (Supreme Commander Allied Powers) for Japan after their surrender that ended World War II. In effect, he was Military Governor with all the powers of a head of state and helped introduce democracy to Japan as well as modernize it. When the Korean War broke out, Gen. MacArthur planned the brilliantly executed amphibious landing at Inchon that broke the back of the North Korean Army.
    Spirit Iron Knife was a far better character; his outfit was well thought out in the comics and Larry Hama integrated his being a Native American as best he can in the comics. Spirit first appeared in G. I. Joe #31, teamed up with Airborne (G. I. Joe's first Native American member who debuted in G. I. Joe #11, along with Doc, Snow Job, and Will Bill) to keep an eye on Snake-Eyes.
    Spirit was well developed as a character. In the comics he was paired with Mutt and his figure was refitted to be a member of Sgt. Slaughter's Marauders. His outfit's well thought out and he wasn't shown for laughs.
    How could either be called 'racist representation' to begin with? One of Hasbro's 1980s G. I. Joe lines strengths was that each Joe was allowed to sport individual outfits.
    Calling either racist is absurd. What's next, Stalker's past as an urban street warlord gives the wrong message to kids? Lady J's attire is sexist? A PC attitude is so wrong.

But being Asian I'm generally good with Quick Kick. And being Filipino I am very familiar with Gen Macarthur as he led the US in liberating us from Japanese occupation :) and yes PC attitude IS so overblown. And I back your sentiment that Larry Hama and Co are FAR from racist and instead brought out the best in the different nationalities represented in GI Joe with classic characters like Spirit...although my favorite would be Airborne :)

    You do know both characters are based on real people? Every person comes from a culture that has an identity that can be stereotyped. Stereotyping is a mental shortcut everyone uses but a person needs to recognize not everyone fits a mold.
    The US Military is one of the most diverse places on the earth and no one really sheds their past nor the home culture, anyone who needs to "rebrand" characters on media needs to lighten up and except people are going to be different and not fit social norms.

    • @StoriesFromTheToyshelf
      @StoriesFromTheToyshelf  Місяць тому

      Well said! So true about the mental shortcut. More often than not, there is no malice intended, and usually what is brought to attention are the positive traits. I'm also aware that when coming up with the filecards and personalities of the Joes, Hama did draw on personalities...and sometimes actual names of people he knew in real life...especially real soldiers he served with, which I think adds a deeper dimension and sense of appreciation to all the "characters" in G.I.Joe that many 80's cartoons don't have.

I know was just watching it for the Pew PEW but now I notice the Production that went into the show. You know all the artwork was done in Japan?! Thier was character development (Corba Commander wasn't that much of a coward, usually his subordinates tried to backstab right at their moment of triumph) Anyway what I really hate about GI Joe is that no one ever dies. War is Hell and if you're going to sell war toys it should be a part of the narrative. Impractical Vehicles always bothered me as well. But I regress GI Joe doesn't have a race problem

The comics is where all the death was at though....while still meant for younger readers, Hama didn't shy away from more adult themes in the comics. But yeah, when that Freaking S.A.W. Viper opened upon the joes in the trench, it was brutal, and it I felt every one of those deaths. That whole arc was wonderful how the Joes set off on a Raid with 4 vehicles and just wrecked a bunch of empty Terrodroms only to get attacked by a whole Cobra Armour and mechanized group. Then the trench mess happens the few remaining Joes escape and get rescued by a Space Drop. EPIC!!

      No, like I said it's for a lack of a better word. What I meant was that before the days of Internet and so on we were less connected with people from around the world. So stereotypes and limited knowledge of different cultures from different countries were more common. At least that's how I see it. Not that people were less intelligent back then, just less informed due to lack of resources available to us. And yes i do recognize that this is a major generalisation....and also an opinion. 👍👍👍

      @laksivrak2203 fair but what I meant by being less connected was that we didn't have access to as much information as we have now thanks to the Internet....I mean yes there is a wholenlot of false information out there but again I'm just referring to access to resources. Case in point, one commenter mentioned to me that he was of Taino decent. I had never heard of such a culture and so I just opened up another tab and googled it and just like that I got all the relevant information I needed. Yes back in thebday there were encyclopedias and libraries, but the ease of obtaining information is just incomparable to today. That's all I meant. Today we have more access to more information as compared to before. So it was easier to just identify cultures we weren't so familiar with in stuff like toys and cartoon characters by using common stereotypes. 👍👍👍
