In this episode Daniel and Mick play four classic guitars (Fender Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster, Collings 290 DC S and Gibson Les Paul Standard) through three classic overdrive/distortion pedals (Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer, Klon Centaur and ProCo Rat).
The general idea is to see how the different guitars' pickups work with the different pedals, and then how the different pedals work with each other. This isn't really a How-To on anything very specific, it's more an exploration of what the guys discover as they plug and play.
Amps used are a Hamstead Artist 20 and Victory V40 The Duchess, running together. The amps remain constant in terms of settings throughout the video as having different pedals and guitars is enough variables in the equation!
As always, amp and effects switching/control is handled effortlessly by TheGigRig G2. For more on TheGigRig, see www.thegigrig.com

As a guy who knows very little about guitars and pedals I found this video to be hugely informative about the relationship different pick-ups have with different pedals. Thank you for producing such an educational aid for the uninformed. While I realise, from watching your other videos, that amps too can have pedals that work well with them, or not, I also now know that certain amps can work with most pedals, amps like the Hamstead. If you could do a few videos on what are your favorite pedal rigs with the Gibson (PAF), Collings (P-90's), Strat and Tele I would really appreciate it? My son and I love your shows and have learned lots from them, please keep up the good work!!

Awesome show as always. Something i recently learned with the Klons that made me think of them differently is thinking of the gain almost as a mid control for a boost mode. So start with level and treble at noon for starters to use it like a boost, adjust your treble to where you like it, then just bring in the gain to add in that mid boost to taste.

Great job! I'm binge watching all The Pedal Shows. Your insights on the eq of pickups and the complex interactions are the best; these videos are a college course in tone. Using 4 different guitars is brilliant, too It, also, sparked an idea. Keeley, Analogman, and JHS are modding a lot of "common" pedals. I would like to see a show about boutique makers modded pedals next to the originals. I have seen a few A/B of youtube vids, but they didn't change guitars, pickups, and ran into Pro Tools. This format is the proper format for real testing of pedals.
I would throw a compressor in the Gig2 for testing drive pedals; a little light compression clears the mud and squeezes more usable dirt from OD or Distortion pedals. I used to run a Dyna Comp to a RAT2 (Gain @ 1 o'clock, Filter @ 1 o'clock, Volume @ 3 o'clock) and that is a rock tone.
Thanks, I'm going to continue to binge watch and check out the phaser video!

It’s funny, I definitely thought the Strat worked and sounded great with the Rat. He said that combination “didn’t really work” but I thought it sounded quite good. The Strat maintained its signature Strat like qualities- nice high end and a snappy chime but also sounded crisp and clear thanks to the gain of the Rat. I have a hard time getting “clear” sounding overdrive or distortion tones with a Strat, but their Strat through the Rat sounded pretty damn good. Great video guys!

That IMO is the secret to the Klon's enduring popularity. The circuit takes two copies of the guitar signal, EQs and compresses and clips one, and then blends the two signals back together. It's like parallel compression + parallel EQ + a harmonic sweetener + a slight chorus, even before it starts with the regular ol' hard-clipping.

I love your show. I do have a suggestion/request maybe ... you could do a whole show on the 808, really. It would be kind of neat, I think, to compare a vintage 808 with the reissue, the 808DX, the Maxon version, the 808 mini, and then some of the better 808 clones, too. You could probably fill your pedalboard with 808s, and still have some off to the side that won't fit! Anyway, thanks for the great show. I've subscribed to the new channel, too. Great show as usual guys. I'm 54, and I grew up plugging a gibson straight into a Fender Twin I had back then (later stolen) made in the early 70's. I had to crank it. We did all types of things to keep it quiet. Turn in backwards, run a fan on it, etc,.
But anyway, I'm just getting into pedals again and playing. I have a Made in the UK Marshall vavlestate with a 1 x 12with a tube preamp and solid state power amp. I'm playing bridge high out put humbuckers almost exclusively. I like the clean channel and using one of the over drive channels at just break up, but I need a good over drive and boost to get into metal since I play mostly 70's and 80's metal and hard rock that still has definition. I usually play at breakup or just a little more with an over drive then need to boost the overdrive into metal.. Such as Ted Nugent, Lynard Skynard, Aerosmith, Poisen, etc, etc,. What would you recommend? Also, is it ok to use two delays before the power amp on a board? I plan on using mostly overdrive, boost, chorus, and delay as well as a morley wah. Any help would be appreciated. Will try to share your channel and sub'd awhile back. Great work and keep it up. Regards from Indiana. USA

Thanks Tim. You've described some great guitar sounds there, the poison one is a bit of a departure :) truth is you might struggle to nail those tones on a valve state pushed into compression. To get close you'll need something with plenty of presence and a fast attack. A klone of some description perhaps such as a RYRA or a Wampler Tumnus

THESE GUYS DID A GREAT VIDEO ON EQ PEDALS YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT, I MOVED MY EQ FROM THE END TO IN FRONT OF MY OVERDRIVE AND DIST PEDALS AND IT GAVE ME MORE OF A 80S METAL SOUND INSTEAD OF MY NORMAL MODERN METAL SOUND, ALSO CHECK OUT THE KHDK GOUL SCREAMER, ITS KIRK HAMMETS SIGNATURE OD(AND COMPANY) BUT ITS BASICALLY A TUBE SCREAMER WITH 5 MINI SWITCHES THAT HELP SHAPE TONE ALOT AND 2 OF THEM DEAL WITH COMPRESSION, I HAD THE ZAKK WYLDE OVERDRIVE BEFORE THAT AND STILL DO HAVE IT BUT THE GOUL SCREAMER IS WHAT I USE NOW, THERES A VIDEO ON THIS GUY PHILLIP MCKNIGHT'S CHANNEL THAT HAS THE LINK TO A WEBSITE WHERE YOU CAN BUILD A VIRTUAL PEDAL BOARD AND GET AN IDEA OF WHAT CERTIAN PEDALS WOULD SOUND LIKE BEFORE YOU GO SPEND THE MONEY ON THEM

Have you put an EHX Soul Food in front of a Rat? I'm curious as to how close the sound actually is.

Put a Soul Food in your chain. I can't explain what it does but it makes every pedal and amp channel sound better to me...by itself it's overdrive on a clean channel isn't particularly overwhelming, I use it low drive clean, but what it does to other pedals and overdriven amps is amazing. Pretty much an always on pedal for me but I do have to change the settings for style or guitar changes.

ive found that i like the rat sound on several different pedals - but mostly for 50-60's rockabilly riffs added to a metal sound... to me a rat pedal is worth every tone !!!!!!

I'm not really into pedals but these are the most interesting and informative guitar tone videos on the planet. I have a 1983 Ibanez ts9 which has been in a cupboard unused since 1983. Does it have any kind of value (in pounds as I'm British) as I'd be really interested.

super show guys. back in the '80s I was playing my les paul through a tube screamer and a rat into a mesa studio 22 driving a 2x12 cab. what a sound that rig made. question: was there a reason for the 808 to be in front of the Klon? I always thought you position cleaner pedals first.

Wayne Vicknair The Klon is technically hard clipping in parallel with the clean signal. Which could be seen as "higher gain" .

" If you have several guitars, some amps & various pedals.. you can plug them in & they'll make you smile! " - Correct : )

What pedals would you recommend for a princeton reverb with a strat? I don't know if I'd get better than my King of Tone but would like a good mid hump pedal
