- The RAT is iconic, dirty distortion that everyone loves. Or at least everyone should love it. It's very diverse and has been used on many different albums. Josh is finally back and is taking us on a sonic tour through some of his favorite songs showcasing the many sounds of the RAT. We're including lots of goodies here in the description, so click around!

Next episode: playing a handful of songs that *didn't* utilize a RAT and presenting an alternate universe in which they did, then let the people vote which is better
+1 on this - start with Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight”
“Hallelujah” would be epic. Josh has the pipes for it.
Like this idea
And here I was just thinking of something like Siamese Dream. This crowd knows how to dream big.
Where does the time machine come in?
Can we just appreciate how amazing the drums sound!?
Yes
@@jhspedals no dude
Even rewatching this months later… this was a great show and I still vote for this format to make a comeback.
Agreed. They could do a Muffaletta show in this format.
@@arphod that would be awesome!
I really enjoyed the “here’s what they used” aspect of this video very much. Learning that REM used a tube screamer into a Rat for Monster was quite the find. I’ve been messing around stacking the Plumes into the PackRat for a couple of days now and am having a blast pretending to be Peter Buck. More of these would be so greatly appreciated. Pedal stacking, settings, types of clipping, etc would be so educational for a lot of us, I think. Thanks for an eye-opening video!
I've been a buck fan forever, and I gotta say, a tube screamer into a rat is probably my favorite distorted electric tone ever
I always play the “I might be wrong” riff when I’m in Drop-D too lol
I believe for Song 2, it’s actually a widespread misconception that it’s drop D. I think he plays in E standard, but in the chorus he plays the power chords with 5th in the bass.
Did you watch the video from Paul Davis about the song ?
@@AlfredHugecokk ah yes that’s where I got it from! Honestly didn’t remember and when I was in my first little cover band years ago, I also played it drop D.
@@loopydemos Same here. Always thought it was drop D and saw Paul's video 4 weeks ago. I never thought it is played that way although I use this technique to make powerchords on the A string sound louder. But in Song 2 it is so powerful that I thought it was Drop D and the f...ing loud sound of the bass.
@@AlfredHugecokk and the coolest thing I learned: the little melody at the end of the chorus is actually a bass, played through one of those tiny little 1 watt toy marshall amps.
Yep, he plays an inversion
I spent my entire junior year in my bedroom playing The Bends. It set the course of my life playing in coffee shops and driving customers away. It is a sad tale.
I’m so grateful for your insistence that Parachutes is a brilliant album. It’s the sole reason I bought a Rat II 10 years ago, and my falling in love with that pedal is the reason I bought the Pack Rat this week. High gain/high filter is fun, but the low gains are truly special!
Addison's face when he's playing Coldplay...someone should get a screen grab of that and put it on a t-shirt that says, "JHS Pedals - make you rock way harder than you really have to."😹😹😹
someone in chat asked for more "stank-face" - he obliged
Just wanted to say that I enjoyed this format/specific style of episode. I'd definitely encourage doing more of these "one pedal, all the iconic sounds it was used for." For example, a Small Stone episode would be great, starting on Pink Floyd and so on.
Sco is a badass. That era where he hooked up with Medeski, Martin & Wood is a lot of fun
"Swimmin' In Rat Juice." What a way to go.
true! love sco, just saw him recently, great tones...
Monster. That album is on my listening rotation and has been there since it came out. I love the tremolo slathered all over the album too.
YES!!!!
Such a fun episode! Keep them coming. Also Love that you brought Driller out of the corner and gave him a mic but then turned his bass down just to show him who the boss is (which I’m sure won’t be brought up in the next mean comments video.) Thanks JHS crew- you really do make the best videos.
This is the content I’ve been waiting for- cover jams!!! Hope this is the first of many, these shows make my day. Thank you guys 😩🤌🏻
One of the many things that I love about Graham Coxon is that he has used Rets since Blur's first record. He has a really recognizable style of playing and sound, as well as really good at using a ton of different effects.
I absolutely love this. Videos like this would have been amazing for me when I first started playing guitar. Such an amazing service you folks are providing the community. Thanks, keep it up!
All their albums are great! (REM)
I love the howling feedback on “begin the beguine”
This is the most JHS episode of the JHS show!
But also, I’m pretty sure the words are “I got my head *checked* by a jumbo jet” or at least according to the subtitles in a bmwfilms dvd.
Das sehe ich auch so.
That F# with the open top strings: instant Alex Lifeson.
He’s probably not the first to ever play it... but like Eddie Van Halen and two hand tapping, it will forever be associated with him.
When I was a younger man, learning to play Hemispheres, we always called that "the Lifeson chord".
@@pcole11 I still do.
Leon Todd almost always plays that chord when showing his “Clean Tone” during effects demos.
I love any chord that sounds cool with open strings.
Can you point out what part that was played ?
@@matthewkennedy7283 39:35
Drain you is in D standard btw, it was the bass man and Mesa boogie pre through a pulsonic greenback Marshall cab, he used a ds-1 on all songs, although he did use a rat for “territorial pissings” according to butch vig there was this “grunge” channel for drain you which he said was a specific pedal, although we do not know which it was.
This was so good. Making the point about how widely used a piece of gear is by playing the songs is perfect in the spirit of this channel. If this was unrehearsed It does make me wonder what you guys could achieve with a couple hours of rehearsal
One of the BEST JHS shows yet. Killer jams and I had a smile on my face the whole watch. Damn you guys have fun.
This was really fun. I like this long-form pedal showcase jam. It feels like a tribute to a pedal, but gives you a better understanding of the pedal than a demo without being as boring as a demo. And it feels like hanging out with you guys, which is a plus.
Putting together a playlist for us is a NICE touch, thanks.
Enjoy!
Love this format. Please do episodes playing famous songs and rifts featuring other famous gear (klon, tube screamer, bluesbreaker style, univibe, various delays, etc). Great way to tie the gear into music that made the gear famous.
I absolutely loved this!!! Plz do this more! Sad I missed the live show
Just bought a PackRat based on this video. It will join my recently acquired Morning Glory.
Been into your videos for a couple years now, happy to finally have a couple JHS pedals on my boards!
This is a fantastic episode. Love everything bout it. Keep rocking
this is one of the best episodes youve ever done. But I'm 39, pretty much your age, I'll be 40 this year. I'm also a huge pedal nerd. cant play for shit, but I love pedals. I loved this episode and I love the "deep dive" nerdy super in depth vids you do about rats and bluesbreakers and that kinda stuff. My fav vids you do.
What's up, twinning? Definitely spending more time at work with a laptop than home with a guitar, but there is no feeling like plugging in on a Saturday, hitting a big chord with fat OD, raunchy distortion, and forgiving reverb, and remembering what it feels like to breathe pure fire.
i bought a rat a couple years ago because stephen malkmus used it on pavement’s slanted and enchanted. that would have been quite endearing to hear this 3 piece take on the beautiful lo-fi chaos of any song on that album, complete with all the malkmusisms on vocals.
I love these jam sessions. You guys are hilarious and awesome!
Monster had a reissue last year where they remixed it. EVERYONE involved went, 'We prefer the original' then released it anyway.
I’m liking this idea so far! I’d love to get additional videos, and especially playlists, highlighting specific pedals or pedal types! Thx Josh!
I second this enthusiastically
Great episode - more like this folks, please. Really enjoyed this.
I love the early '80s IRS Records era of REM. Chronic Town, Murmur, and especially Reckoning. Folk rock from Mars, and not a lot of effects or distortion, so that early phase of the band's career might be an acquired taste for some tonemonsters. I love my effects and LOTS OF 'EM, but it can be great to get back to basics.
Irs records has Sub lawns on it. That is all. Nothing but amazing music
I think they used chorus on some tracks of Fables, on the bass too
@@t.r.backenbaum7325 You'll hear modulation effects going all the way back to Chronic Town. But subtle, for the most part. Mitch Easter has said in interviews that they used a Scholtz Rockman. Which is almost too blasphemous to consider, but then again what the hey? Those things were great.
I absolutely love this and thanks for bringing the bass up in the mix!
this was my favorite format of the JHS show, I'm enjoying the current videos but I found myself rewatching many of the trio band videos lately, watching you playing music and talking about nonsense stuff really was super fun, also seeing the pedals in a context of a band was always really good to hear.
Also, I think the shameless plugs for this packrat really worked well (I even bought one after this video and has been on my board since then).
Alot of fun, watching this. Hope you keep them coming every so often.
Really like this format. It's cool seeing what other people used and the stuff that can be used now.
Great video! Enjoyed watching recreate the sounds from those famous songs. Really demonstrates how close your pedals sound to the songs on the albums. Addison is the perfect coffee house drummer.
Wow this was extremely fun and not what I was expecting from a Friday show. Great job all around. 👏
The Rat is to the distortion pedal world what the Boss Blues Driver is in the overdriver realm. Very, very versatile pedals. I love mine.
I can't believe I missed this live. So many of my fav jams from growing up! Thanks fellas.
Next time!
Josh and team, thank you so, so much for playing from "Parachutes". I've been in love with that record since middle school, and it's aged like fine wine. Also, even more so, thank you so so so much for playing something other than "Yellow" from the record. Great song, but the others deserve some love. You guys playing "Don't Panic" made my day.
YES! That whole album is really so good.
Great episode.
Good seeing Driller on bass.
Thanks for the playlist!
I love the show but never comment, because clearly you don't need feedback to make a great show. But, since you asked, I'll tell you. THIS IS AWESOME.
We have fun watching you all have fun. So keep on trying stuff, and have more fun! Love ya!
I'm fairly sure Song 2 is in standard E, as that is the tuning my band plays it in. The bass actually provides the majority of the distorted sound during the choruses, though it is still likely to be through a Rat, or possibly a Big Muff.
That's what I keep hearing!! 🤦🏻♂
This doesn't reflect too poorly on us, I hope, lol.
@@jhspedals I always enjoy the jams. Everyone involved in the making of these videos, on or off screen, are very talented.
I don't think I ever noticed before how close to "Sub-mission" the vibe of that Blur song is.
I bought the Pack Rat the day you released the video on the " History of the RAT", and announced its inception into the JHS line of Pedals. I don't regret the purchase one bit!!!🥰
Thank you!!!
I was washing dishes while watching this episode, but I'm totally going to go jam out with you guys as my backing track after I'm done!
This was such a great watch. Super entertaining and informative!
I love it when I go back and find a gem of a video I never saw when it came out.
New enjoyer of your channel (third video watched). If all of the episodes are like this, I'm hooked.
JHS is the enabler of the pedal addicted. LOL
This was great, could watch these streams all day
Josh is an underappreciated guitar player. Hes really good.
Dude hell yea he is
love the live jams. reminds me of jamming with buddies and checking out each other's gear.
I felt really validated watching this video. Aside from that, this is one of my favorite formats you’ve all done.
😄
Love when John starts playing "I might be wrong" when he gets into drop d
That was awesome please do the same thing for muffaletta
Seconded
MAN! This makes me wanna hang in coffee-houses in the mid-west!
Great episode dudes. Sounds like that some of the distortion for Song 2 by Blur comes from the bass guitar too.
Addisons drumming is so enthusiastic. Makes me smile 😁 in a really good way. Top show
I like Addison on drums better than Nick, and Nick on bass more than Addison. Good to change it up if you have the talent.
I’ve had my PackRat since last December and absolutely love it.
💪🏼🐀
Glad you love it!
Great episode with all the 90’s and other songs I love!
You guys are crazy, I love it!
Great show and idea! Rat is the king! Nice move with the playlist as well 💪
Keep up the great work, guys! And Josh, I'm digging John Scofield's "A Go Go" a whole bunch! (like, bananas) Thanks for turning me on to it!
You asked so I’ll give my input. I love the video. I’d love to see more like this where you play the songs that used certain pedals. I’m totally here for it. 😂 dying over that Triple Rec joke.
…this is a very entertaining episode! You gave me ideas on how I can use my chorus.
That was a lot of fun! Great energy in the studio that day! I really need your Rat pedal (and a few others)! Cheers!
Josh actually rubs the gold tube screamer like it is his precious!!! LOL. Love you guys
This is a fun variation for an episode. Thanks for the Monster reminder. I haven't listened to it since shortly after buying it.
Absolutely great episode. More like this!
that gold TS is the most C3PO pedal I have ever seen.
We needed more cowbell! HAHAHA j/k j/k loved the video and thanks for sharing.
Please do more of this. It’s really awesome
Glad to see Parachutes get some love, always thought that album was really good
just is such a good radiohead song.......so good. you are right the bends was prolly one of their best albums ever
I love my PackRat. Saving up for the Kodiak now.
Great episode! Enjoyed it, thanks.
I love this demo …I like seeing what pedals to use for which songs! Fantastic!!!!
Josh: available for birthdays and weddings, discounts for large parties or Caribbean gigs. Takes requests
I’ve had many pedals come and go but the RAT is here to stay.
Loved this! Shredmaster, Boss DD-5, CE-3 and a colorsound wah was my setup through my teens and first bands. Stagetuner and volumepedal was added later.
Another great episode, insightful and good to know! I’ve used the F# chord with open B & E strings for years in my bands for the songs we’ve written, I love the openness and atmospherics it brings and works well moving it up and down the fretboard in lots of positions, also the open F used in the Coldplay tune is also another favourite chord I use a lot. Nice one definitely another great format for future episodes jamming cover songs that use particular pedals. A fantastic song for use of Tremolo is ‘How soon is now’ by The Smiths which is just so evident it’s a Tremolo being used and creates the total feel and character for the whole track, if the Tremolo had never been invented this song would never have really worked and wouldn’t be held in such high regard that it is nowadays.
Cool! Thanks Josh for making this. I've heard The Rat way more than I thought. I'm amp gain guy, and the only dirt pedal I've come across that I really liked and the only one I own is the Big Box Graphic Fuzz.
Heck yeah “A-Go-Go” with Medeski, Martin and Wood as Scofield’s backing band! 🙌🏼
Just for the information, Song 2 from Blur is not tuned in open D. It's standard tuning, but he plays also the fifth (inversion) with the E string. > It's the same fret than the root on A.
I was thinking the same. When we used to play it , it was in standard . It needs a bit more low end as well , possible he used 2 or 3 Rats in the chorus as it was a bit heavier .
@@TheSavagederekjust of a overdrive before (tube screamer for example). And in the studio version, bass get a LOT of distorsion on it, and sounds louder than the guitar
This is bringing back some memories! Fellow Class of 2000er Josh. I had that Monster album mail ordered through the old BMG CD subscription! 1994 was such a good year for music. I will never forget the first music video I ever saw was R.E.M Losing My Religion on MTV!! (Probably 1992)
I dug this video it’s a cool change up. Do groups of bands that all used bigmuffs or DS1s etc. that’d be pretty fun. Great job boys!
Great episode, thanks guys. ✌️👌👍🏻😊 Greetings from Germany.
How the heck do guys not have more subscribers? The products you sell, alone, should be sufficient for more followers. Sad state of affairs.
@jhspedals 'I got my head CHECKED, by a jumbo jet.’ ;) love the show from sunny London
I absolutely loved this episode! :)
I am HERE for this kind of pedal history!
I so appreciate the jazz shoutout. Jazz is awesome with JHS pedals too!
Paul Reynolds from A Flock of Seagulls used a Rat (the first big one) along with many Bay Area thrash bands like Metallica. Keep rockin' guys!!!
Amazing view would love to see more of these for other iconic pedals :)
