  • Jig fishing is EASY in the Summer! Keep it simple, focus on key jig styles in key colors and fish with confidence. By simplifying your method, you'll have more confidence this Summer and you'll catch more fish. We've narrowed it down to 3 jigs to get you through all of your Summer bass fishing.
Anglers often get caught up in the hype of new lures and colors. Some of these new offerings make a huge difference and stay in the arsenal permanently, others simply distract you from your confidence baits for a time. Today we've narrowed our Summer options to a finesse jig, a pitchin' jig, and a flipping' jig. These 3 jigs and a handful of trailers will work in every situation you come across on the water.
Below is a breakdown of the jigs, including color recommendations. We've also included the jig trailers as well as the rods and reels we have confidence in for this fishing style. Don't let the dog days of Summer get you down, this is prime time to get out there and catch a bunch of bass!

    Matt and Tim,
I’ve been fishing for a couple of years now, and watch you channel regularly. I fish ponds in suburbia outside of DC. My confidence baits have been square bills, jerk baits, spinners and Texas rigs. For years I was frustrated with jigs, never catching anything. I have a couple of spots where I can catch large mouth regularly, but all pretty small.
This year, after hearing you say that jigs tend to catch bigger fish, I committed to using them more. In the last few months, I’ve caught four on a jig, and three of the four were PBs or close to it.
I’m now a jig believer and have one tied on at all times.
Thanks for all the great content.
    Cheers!!!

    • @LeatherNeck1833
      @LeatherNeck1833 5 років тому

Great idea! I'm going to try that. I've been using the Rage Menace as its trailer since it has great but subtle action. With the Paca Craw's more aggressive action, you could probably no longer consider it a "finesse" bait. (Just joking)
Next Spring, try putting the full size Paca on a structure or flipping jig. If you've never tried it, you'll be pleased with the results.

I rarely throw a worm since i discovered finesse jigs. They're so compact, I don't have to worry about weight/worm separation, the tail doesn't wrap around stuff, you can skip, pitch, flip, or cast them, and they do tend to get a larger average fish. I love'em !

Would have to agree with the darker color while punching through grass. Last week Friday, I went out fishing afternoon where it is very very hot. Punching through grass and under docks, I caught this massive 4lbs Bass. I was using a craw on a jig, June bug color and I caught a few good fish with it. After watching this video it just makes a lot more sense why the bass took it as I was stroking it through the grass, mentioned by you in the video, Matt.

Something I was playing around with this weekend was throwing a 3/16oz micro jig with a #1 sized hook...then throwing on a larger chunk bait or double tail grub, super slow and methodical fall and with the right plastic can get that perfect movement. Definitely going to be a technique i try more throughout the year, thinking the winter months when the fish are sluggish and seeing that bait slow fall like that will be killer

That's great info Matt, had one of my best jig days of the summer about 3 weeks ago on local Lake. The fish were in deeper brush all the points a lot of the fish were hitting it on the fall and some of the fish would just pick it up off the bottom you won't even feel the bite you just pick up on it and it would be heavy. Fishing with the Flippin style jig.

Trim the skirts and weed guard. That's possibly the most important part of jig fishing. Maybe it's common sense but I feel like alot of guys leave that part out on UA-cam. But there's also so much incredible info on here. Maybe too much lol. I think the tactical bassin Bois do talk about the skirts and weedguard in another video. They some bad boys

I know they're up there in price and Gary moved to TX so seeing them in stores might be harder for you, but you should definitely try to give the Dobyns Xtasy series a look, I think you might like it. I have a DRX 724 and while I'm not catching monsters the 3lb spots(and a 8lb flathead) load that rod to about the middle of the blank, it has a standard fast action, but there is more give before the rod completely shuts off.

I'm surprised Swim Jigs didn't make the list. Summer bass are munching heavily on shad, minnows, baby bass, and gills and the swim jig is the only jig used to imitate these fish. Granted, I love swimming my pitching jig through heavy Summer grass, but it still doesn't do what a swim jig can and that's looking like a fish. Anyway, just my $.02 on the matter. I did enjoy the video and have learned a couple new techniques to try.

Awesome awesomevideo. Really good info. Speaking of docks and shade etc., could you do a video on all the lures you can skip? Im still learning how to do this and not sure which ones skip well and which dont. Thanks!!

I'd like to see a vid with every type of lure made and have them layed out in groups for the rod length, power, action and blank material you think is best for that category of baits. Example: say you use the same rod action, length and power for spinnerbaits, squarebills and bladed jigs. Have them all grouped together and show the rod type you like for that group. Showing your choice and Tim's choice. I'm not talking brands. Actions only

MATT! I love your guys videos. However after Scrolling through your extensive video log i noticed two things that you have not covered videos on. 1. Night fishing. 2. Fishing the full moon And maybe fishing night around the full moon. Lol Learned more from you guys than all my years growing up in Florida.

I straight up use my heavy power crankbait rod. It's very rare when I get bit on a jig with rod that I lose that fish because of the more parabolic action it has. People make fun of me all the time for what I fish a jig on. You know what, I don't care. It works for me.

No one breaks it down as well as Matt. For those just learning about different types of fishing this is the guy to listen to 💯
