Its easy to make a blanket statement like, "Jigs catch big bass". Its something entirely different to peer into a box of jigs and bags of trailers and try to figure out which baits to pair for the situation you're facing. Honestly, its intimidating. Today we're going to make it a whole lot easier! We've got 3 scenarios for you with 3 very different solutions. Choose the scenario that best matches your lake, apply those tips, and you'll be fishing with confidence in no time.

I toss a jig every season every trip how can you not use a jig? Sure I fish other baits but a jig gets use each trip as well
I have a clear reservoir I usually hit with the Ned rig I want to try this with. Lots of deep rock ledges etc.

I added some Strike King Bitsy bugs to my arsenal recently, super under rated jig that just gets bit.

Far as a finesse jig goes I have been using a black and blue bitsy jig with a purplish and green sparkle coffee tube on the back on boone and so far I’m really impressed with it! Most luck I’ve ever had on a jig

I'm not the greatest fishing jig's but I have caught jig fish and this really helps, I would have never really looked at fishing it this way and styles of jig! Huge thanks Matt! Stay safe and healthy out there!
Vary retrieves when fishing jigs. Also vary your pauses. After every 10 to 15 minutes switch spots you cast. Start with a football head jig. If you have proline creyfish attractant it helps. Also get shad an frog attractant from proline. After using football head jigs try flipping jigs in the grass pockets. Using youyo techniques start rod at 10 o'clock then pop rod pause the pop rod up again in the 12 o clock position then very slowly lower rod tip down to 10 o'clock reel in slack as you drop rod tip. It's important to vary pause an retrieve to present jig more realistically. Try this an good luck. Also when varying pause gently tap butt of rod to give subtle action to bait. In the hot weather pause 3 to 7 seconds if the pause isn't long enough pause longer especially in really hot weather. In nicer weather 3 to 5 seconds an vary time 3 seconds then 4 then 7 seconds an so on. Occasionally pause up to 10 to 12 seconds. Also try fast slow an moderate retrieve when reeling in your jig

Take 4 jigs and 3 or 4 different trailers next time you go. Leave everything else at home. Fish it until you PUT confidence in it!

My absolute favorite Smallmouth jig, especially in the summer, is the 3/16oz Zman Shroomz micro finesse jig in green pumpkin. I have caught more 20" Smallies on that jig than anything else. I'm sure I'll be throwing one this weekend. It's amazing how many big fish want that tiny jig.

It’s interesting that you mentioned flipping your trailers over to expose one color or the other. I do the same and also will spin the skirt around to hide or expose accent colors.

We love jiggin'.... I'm fishing the South Bay area lakes... Cheap football head Bass patrol.. Peanut butter jelly skirt with a pepper pumpkin rage split tail trailer... Some craw smelly jelly and we're good to go! Killin it!!

Any tips or tricks for bank fishing fast rivers or water from the discharge of a Dam? Specifically Douglas Dam or the French Broad River? I just picked up a couple 5/8ths Matt Herren flipping jigs- really whish I had of known about the Canterbury compact flipping jig though- I think it would've been a better option for my fisheries. We don't have a lot of large bass in my lake, mostly 1-3 pounders, and I think they prefer the smaller, more compact presentations.

An old man on Alabama's famed Coosa River once told me, "Son, there's only TWO colors of jigs: BLACK and BLACK!" Sage advice. Brauer made the 1st million and got on the Wheaties Box on the strength of basically one lure: a ½oz black/blue jig. I've caught more 6 and 7lb bass on it than any other lure. (White ½oz Lunker Lure Buzzbait is 2nd!) Arkie used to make a kinda diamond shape headed jig called a Grassmaster Jig. That jig in ⅝oz, with it's living rubber, and an Uncle Josh black or blue #11, 1, or big #10 'gator' pork chunk (before the Guido Bug, circa 1986) won me ALOT of money. Lunker Lure used to make one BEFORE Denny put his name on it and called it a 'Rattleback Jig', with GOLD TINSEL in a black living rubber skirt. That jig, with either the black pork frog or a black/chartreuse Guido Bug was one BAD DUDE. My 1st bass on it was 6lbs! Later, Strike King made the Bitsy Bug. At customer's urging, they made the Bitsy FLIP, with a stouter hook. That little jig (black and blue, as usual), with a WHITE H&H Swamp Frog, and later, the WHITE Zoom Swimmin' Chunk, was an Alabama club secret; a perfect FROG imitator that propelled Gerald Dale Swindell to fame. I bought a 7'11" Okuma Scott Martin TCS Matt Daddy Xtra Heavy Flipping/Punching rod in BLACK & BLUE to remind me to stick to what works. If I'm not flipping a jig, 9 times out of 10, it's a HEMATOMA Sweet Beaver on 1oz Tungsten. Conversely, I like to STROKE a ¾oz Biffle Hardhead football swing head with either a Big Texan or Perfection color Pit Boss; DEADLY around logjams that pile up in creek backs and bends and pockets just above hydro dams. STROKIN'!

Perfect timing , I'm trying to master the jig. Me and my buddy are pretty competitive with each other and he's gotten pretty good with the jig so I need to catch up.😂
Wanna beat him in numbers? Flip the Hematoma Sweet Beaver on ¾ or 1oz tungsten, pegged, and a 3/0 Heavy hook. Put a rattle in it. Put Bang Crawfish scent on it. To beat him with a jig, get ½oz Nichols Saber Jigs or Dirty Jigs Swim Jigs. Keep it simple; black/blue is always a good choice. Trail them with Blue Bug Rage Craws with about an inch cut off. Whether swimming, stroking, or flipping, fish it FAST. You WILL win! 👍🏼

Missile baits makes an amazing mini flipping jig. It stands up on the bottom and has natura colors. I love it. I use a baby paca on the back.

I went from couldn’t get a bite, fishing moving baits, to catching dinks every cast, finesse fishing a 4/5 inch soft plastic weightless!! They weren’t big but it sure did build my confidence back… the pattern of the bait was blue on the front brown on the back… won’t name the bait here but it was a ton of fun! 😝 😝

Jackall makes a Dera Break. Tiny little finese chatterbaits from 1/8th to 1/4th. I use the 1/4th with a 4 inch deps death adder with a half inch trimmed off the top, and have been absolutely smashing the smallies up here in Canada with it ever since the spawn. Feels like a tiny little buzzsaw in the water and they seem to love the smaller profile, so it constantly out produces the jackhammer.

I caught a monster on a jig yesterday with a rage crawl trailer. Just popping it and letting it fall and felt a dunk so I let it sit, reeled down and saw the line move and then yanked him!

I use jigs 75% of the time. Just switch up the trailers and colors. I even throw swimbaits like Joshys and Keitech for open water on jigs.

Ive focused on jigs the last few times I went fishing.
The last time I went it was 92 in eastern NC and caught most of the fish on a green pumpkin and black&blue jig next to structure and lilly pads.

Any tips to feeling confident grabbing the bass? I love fishing, don't like touching any of them when I catch them lol, but I'm working on gaining the confidence to grab them without hesitation and no screaming when they move 🤣
Learn to use Charlie Brewer Slider Heads! The ¹/¹⁶ or ¹/⁸oz Spider Slider Pro head with a green pumkin or junebug Zoom Finesse worm is a great starting point. It's a SYSTEM that relies on light (6lb) tackle, the diagonal FALL and simple DO-NOTHING action of the worm to catch bass. And it flat out catches them, too. I've had three one-hundred (spotted) bass days on public water with it and countless 75-80 fish days. (But I live in Central Alabama; spotted bass HEAVEN!) GET THAT DOWN FIRST. It's extremely simple and easy. As you catch more (and more and MORE) bass, because of the way the light wire hook really pegs them, you'll be lip-landing, back-grabbing, cradling, and handling more bass, more easily than you ever thought possible! I'll tell ya what I just got one of the osp zero one jigs they are finesse and I paired it with the osp do live beaver it looks amazing I love it u guys should try them
I’ve always preferred the classic 853c jwr for my lighter jigs, I might step up to a to a slightly longer rod to fish heavier stuff but I’ve always preferred a smaller rod. Maybe one of these days I’ll go longer and see if it improves my fishing!
Also if they made like a 7’2 MH MBR rod I would be super happy, I feel limited in casting distance with my 7ft rod when I want it to be a multi purpose rod. The new gcx looks good can’t wait for you guys to review it! Great video as always!
I’m pretty new to Bass fishing. How do you work a jig in thick hydrilla? I understand where to fish the jig, but how do you work it through the grass? Do you have any instructional videos?
In thick hydrilla, you only really have two options. 1) Swim a ¼oz swimjig on top of the mats. (Think white, black/blue, or green pumpkin) 2) Flip a HEAVY (1oz) grass jig straight down into it and just jig it up and down. (Think black/blue or green pumpkin/brown. Use a slim trailer, such as a BB Cricket, Sweet Beaver, or similar NON-flapping trailer)

I fish a pond where there is little cover like submerged grass. There is grass where the water meets the bank. The bottom is mostly mud, in some areas in the shallow it transitions to small rock. What type of jig would work best for this type of area?
I grew up fishing ponds. I'm 50 now. In my experience, I would generally only use a jig in the late winter/early spring. Then, it would be a black/blue Arkie style head with a black or blue chunk. Most all other times of the year, because ponds tend to be shallower, a simple weightless (or ¹/¹⁶th oz Spider Slider) Zoom Finesse worm in junebug or watermelonseed would get the nod, as it's much easier and efficient to fish. (Always take a #9 Rapala floating minnow to a pond for back up, too!)

Very little grass , water about a foot down. Caught some early on top water . Then on Carolina rig dragging over rocks on points. Forgot about ledges . Place shut down after 10am .

Depends on where you are, what you're fishing for, and what the main forage is. Smallmouths, largemouths, and spots all have their different preferences, which change some from locale to locale, and season to season, but as he said, a ½oz black/blue jig is a great starting point. I prefer Dirty Jigs Swim Jigs or Nichols Swim Jigs. A hematoma colored Reaction Innovations Sweet or Kinky Beaver is a great trailer. Net Bait Paca Slims and Strike King Rage Craws are great trailers, too. But don't get overwhelmed at the choices at first. Keep it simple until you build confidence in the jig. Black/blue or some shade of brown/green pumpkin are the basics.
I am not very familiar with jigs but i have 2 or 3. My plan was to fish big perch with them but i am a little bit worried that the weed guard should be so strong that the perch dont can be properly hooked. We have huge perch her in sweden but a perch is still a smaller fish with a smaller mouth.

Matt and Tim recently (about a year ago) moved to Tennessee from California. Chickamauga is their home lake, but they fish all over the US.
