Summer Worm Fishing - Tricks To Catch Bigger Bass

  • Summer has arrived and its time to throw the plastic worm! So many anglers overlook the dog days of Summer but you can catch more bass in one day in the heat than you can any other day of the year! By understanding how, where, and when to switch to a worm, you'll be setting yourself up for success all Summer long.
    When Tim picks up the worm he targets deeper rock. There are plenty of bass to be found in the grass but those fish are often catchable on reaction baits. When you focus on rock, you'll discover a whole new class of fish that often won't eat anything else.
    In this video Tim gives some great tips for budget anglers and seasoned pros, alike. Regarding sensitivity - Purchase the most sensitive rod that your budget will allow! Sensitivity is EVERYTHING when fishing a worm. If budget is a concern, two additional tips are to purchase a longer rod so you can visibly see deflection instead of relying solely on sensitivity to detect a bite. Also, spooling up with braided line (and leader) will increase your sensitivity drastically compared to fishing with fluorocarbon.
    Below is a breakdown of the baits and gear Tim discussed in the video. We've separated out his favorite worms by style, given color recommendations, and included the rods he recommends from ultra-sensitive to budget-friendly.

    Another tip for beginners, you don't need to use giant hooks. The smaller the hook, the more action you get out of the bait. A bass will always try to eat a big bait HEAD FIRST. Just let the rod load before you swing. My best days worm fishing have been using a 3/0 hook on a 10" worm. The hook may seem small at first but it's plenty long enough.

    • @flapjack622
      @flapjack622 5 років тому +1

      Marcus Young good tip. Ive never used a 10” worm cuz the bass i catch are usually smallish to normal sized and the hooks that I “think” i should use for a 10” worm look to big for the fish.

    • @marcusyoung2870
      @marcusyoung2870 5 років тому +1

      @@flapjack622 I've actually lost more bass when worm fishing on larger hooks then when using smaller hooks. The larger the hook, the bigger the hole you'll rip in their mouth, making it easier for then to throw the hook. Little bass will try to eat a big worm as well so it doesn't hurt to try it.

    • @FatJeffStew
      @FatJeffStew 5 років тому +1

      I use 2/0 or 3/0 worm hook for baby brush hogs up to 7" worms. I get to the big boy brush hogs or 10"+ worms I like a 4/0 EWG or a 5/0 Worm hook. Going bigger just gets too much imo.

    This video is perfect timing! I was just about to give up on my worms with tails.. I fished one last week and was shutout until I accidentally ripped the tail off-then proceeded to catch fish. Tried the tail agin a couple days ago, same result..nothing. Intentionally tore the tail off and started bringing them in the boat. I guess I’ll give them a shot a third time.
    GREAT tips on the braided line and longer rod for better sensitivity and feel - much appreciated Tim!

    The nrx/aldebaran combo is almost otherworldly. I just don’t think you can do any better than that. Forget bottom contact/finesse stuff even. It’s just brilliant all around. Whenever I switch from one of my typical reaction setups to the nrx/aldebaran, I have to stop and appreciate how incredible it feels. I’m slowwllyyy swapping out my non-heavy duty, “no wenching required” setups to nrx with aldebarans or metaniums. They’re expensive but they’re so worth it. There’s a reason you see all the shimano pros with boats full of nrx/metanium combos.

    You should come fish tawas lake in Michigan. I fish here all the time and live in tawas, it's not a giant lake but it has lots of pike and bass. Its average depth is around 3 to 4 feet and it has a good amount of weeds. You could also go into the river which has lots of bass in it also, there are some nice holes and good rocky spots.

    Tuesday feels like months away, I ordered my first two ever NRX rods. I wanted the 852c or s but couldn’t get it, so i got the 853c and 822s SYR. i have an 854c glx and 822s Imx pro DSR all 4 added this spring. Let me warn you all, if you buy the IMX thinking hey it’s still Loomis i’ll save some money. No you will not, because it will just make you want the NRX more. I then got the GLX and i was so impressed i kept thinking how could it be better? I own Exprides and Champion XP and i just sold my Avid X because it’s very similar to my 854 in that it’s a jig and t rig rod. These rods are addicting.

    Hey I got some high dollar rods, but they have a less combo at Walmart, the orange and green ones. Like 40 bucks and the rod has awesome feel and sensitivity, just as good as a $100.00 falcon.
    The reel isn't awesome but it works.

    Great video yet again. Thank you for the awesome content.
    After watching all of your worm videos I am in the market for a new spinning set up. Looking to stay in the $250 price range, is there a rod that would do well as an all around rod for drop shot, shaky head, ned rig. I have been looking at shimano or dobyn's.

    Great advice as usual...If you're on a budget buy Zman Zelastic worms/finesses frogs... Zman can take hits from squeakers all day then the big bites... I like zoom, yum and ...budget-minded; $1/2 more...Zman

    Great video. Thanks for all the tips. What are your thoughts on a senko style bait on a shaky head or pegged Texas rig?

    I greatly appreciate all these instructional videos. I recently fish my club tournament this past weekend . I got big fish for the tournament. It was a Post spawn fish weighing in at 5.04 lbs. Long body and big head. Imagine if this was a pre spawn fish. :O I caught it off of a roboworm Texas rigged. #scratchmybackIscratchyours
