So excited you started a longer format channel. You answered one of my questions on TikTok, but I'd love to "dig in" a little more and sounds like others are in a similar boat. I graduated 2010 with a BA in Ad/PR, but didn't pursue that path. I found my way into marketing (big mistake) and then client services. I am now trying (was the goal for 2020) to move in the ad space on the account side in MSP. My school network was Tampa and most of my professional network was Boston, so very lacking in the MN network (and all events are still on hold). Thanks!!!
Marketing is a great transition into advertising, especially on the account side. If you can't find any personal connections, hit someone up at a local agency for an informational interview. Ask them what their day-to-day responsibilities are, write them down, and find parallels from your marketing experience. I'm sure there's a ton of overlap and you'll be able to give real examples of why you're capable of that role. Also, a lot of agencies have been running virtual events and panels, so see if you can join any of those!

I love your tiktok, I just graduated with a marketing degree but have recently been really exploring the idea of copywriting. i know in the video you mentioned you were in a few other departments before becoming a copywriter, would you be open to making a video on how you made the switch to creative?
Yes I will definitely talk about my journey in the future! The quick story is - I started in social media, thought I wanted to do more of the account and analytics side and then quickly realized I needed to do something creative!
I wanted to ask about like a senior in high school? Is there anything I can do now to have potentially on my resume or something to have general experience in?
Hi! Sorry I'm seeing this so late! This early on in your schooling, I wouldn't worry too much about the technical stuff. That will come during college, especially if you major in something like advertising or marketing. For now, just try to get as much life experience as you can. When you create advertising, you want to find interesting, relatable things to base it off of, and you'll most likely be pulling ideas from your own life experience. So go travel, talk to people, read books, watch movies and documentaries, visit museums, whatever you can.
Hi I love your tik tok and can’t wait to watch these! I’m graduating in may with an Adverting / PR degree and want to get into accounts but haven’t gotten an internship yet in it. I live in Orlando and try to network but it’s hard right now. I’ve done an internship where I wrote press release and social media with a pr company’s and next week I start a new business internship with an ad agency. Any advice? I’m willing to move any where after I graduate.
Congrats on the internship! Make sure you take them up on any and all opportunities they give you. Ask to sit in on meetings so you can hear how they talk to clients. I learned so much in my internships just from listening to meetings and conversations I wasn't even involved in haha.

I have well over a decade of experience copywriting and producing commercials for radio, but I can't get any of my local ad agencies to even return an email.
Do you have any advice?
First off, it may just be the job market right now. A lot of agencies are still struggling, so it's possible they put out a job listing and then their circumstances changed. Aside from that, make sure your portfolio is reflective of the job you're applying for. Most copywriting positions have to write for every tactic out there, so if your book is too heavy on radio, they might think you aren't a great fit. Same goes for the kinds of clients the agency has. Say you've mostly written for restaurants, an agency with mostly health clients or travel clients may not see the fit. Hope that helps. Best of luck!
