I live in NYC. Actually it would be one of the easiest big cities for this! The city has a lot of craziness happening, but people living/sleeping in vehicles is not common and is not on anyone's radar. The homeless are in the subways. If you are stealthy, you can park in almost any legal parking spot. Chances are, in the words of Douglas Adams, "no one will care or indeed even notice"!
I live in Manhattan.... the upper west side in the 70's. There would be no problem camping here with a Prius. You would have to move every other day because of street cleaning and that's it. I would suggest keeping off of the main streets and avenues. They can be noisy. As I understand it.... unlike other cities ..... sleeping in your car is not illegal ..... the reason is that the city does not want people coming out of bars at 3:AM with a few to many drinks and then being forced to drive off. They would rather that you just sleep it off.... Makes sense. It should be safe if you have a dog in the car..... good alarm system.
Very cool. There are lanes specifically for bikes, not really smart to ride on the sidewalks. But, since it’s an EBike, they know you are a tourist. Be safer with the back window though, just a tiny crack. If more than that, plus out of state tags, your Prius is a target for stealing.
With my job I get to travel around a lot of NZ. I'm in construction so I get to know where all the new builds are happening. The BEST places to stealth camp are out the front of a new house being built. Tradies don't show up to the site until 8am because of noise laws so you've got a good amount of time to leave the area. Sometimes I carry my hi-viz shirt so I can get the gas cooker going for breakfast as no one looks twice at a "builder" cooking some food out the back of a car.
I live here in Washington near the beach but it's also so cold and gloomy to actually really enjoy the beach. Seeing how sunny it was there made me really wish I was there right now. A Prius is such a handy car to have. I love that you can run the ac and have the dog inside without her getting hot.

Stop making excuses Kal. Take your jacket and get out! WA has much better air quality and natural environment in general than NYC does. The fresh cold coastal wind sobers your mind, and it cures many illnesses. I lived in Seattle for two years (2018-20). I went to NYC for five days in 2019 and did not enjoy the environment at all, good food though.
You almost have me convinced to get a prius - over 50 miles per gallon and being able to leave your dog in the car with the airconditioner running.! If they only had a 4x4. Best wishes for your pup! Haha $40 for 3 days in New York!

Sorry about your copilot. I took a 4 month cross usa roadtrip in 2017. I did 20,000 miles 39 states in my 70 camaro. 13mpg. Plus hotels not car camping. It was a memorial trip to my wife of 25 years who passed in 2015 unexpectantly. I loved NYC. I will be going back on the cheap either in my magnum car camping or camaro pulling a home built mini trailer. Your videos have been such great tutorials and inspirations. Praying your dog will recover as you get the proper medications and treatment. I have a chiweenie service dog who gos everywhere with me now including the 4 month trip. Again thank you for these.great videos!!!
Sorry about your wife, sounds like the trip was fun though. Glad the videos are helpful! My dog is on medicine, and is still asymptomatic, which is good. Let me know if you have any suggestions or anything, thank you!
I went to NYC five years ago in a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage, which is a very small car. I popped the rear seats out and also removed the passenger seat, so I had enough space to lay down. Got stuffy several times during the night, so I would manually start the car to run the AC for awhile occasionally. But I had a good time and saved a lot of money just sleeping in the car. Actually I had an idea of experiencing being homeless in NYC sleeping in a park, but just used the car. Mostly went to the various big art museums and sightseeing. Now that I bought a Prius V, which has a lot more space, I want to go visit again. Still working on my conversion, but I went camping in the Prius for a week recently and it worked great with the hybrid battery powered AC.
Follow up: I did eventually go ahead and take my Prius V stealth camping to NYC for the New York Comicon 2021 last October. It was great. Went out to Long Beach and slept on a street behind a Walmart, and then up to Huntington which was having a festival. Then back to Manhattan to see some art before heading back from whence I came. New things on that trip were the car compressor refrigerator/freezer and a portable toilet where the passenger seat usually was. Although I usually didn't have to use it, it came in handy a couple times when I woke up and just had to go. I tried a cot in the back with a 3" memory foam mattress, but that was a little too close to the ceiling in the rear and not as comfortable as just having the other mattress at the cargo floor level. Also, another thing I would do differently is to get more supplies before getting into Manhattan, because the prices and selection of the neighborhood grocery stores was pretty bad. Also, I used a 600W Microwave with a 1000W Power Station to heat up hotdogs, leftovers, etc... I look forward to trying it again. Thanks for showing the good and the bad, and being an inspiration.
@Hate Committee . In my opinion, the street parking on the streets along the apartment buildings by Central Park is the best for car camping. Although, one might have to drive around a bit to find an open spot, it is free. Just move the car on days indicated on the signs, because they ticket pretty quickly. One does hear conversations sometimes from people walking by on the sidewalk. I think the large number of cars means that no one pays attention to just another car parked in a long line of cars parked bumper to bumper. Unless one is being stupidly conspicuous. Also, you can walk to central park and stretch one's legs, and usually plenty of local community shops, bars, and restaurants to service the apartment buildings. Stock up first before getting into the city, because things are at a price premium and there are few, if any, chain stores.
This was very cool to watch cause I have a Prius I like to camp out in and cause I want to visit NYC. Also love how you point out you like to travel cheaply cause I do too! Will subscribe. Only thing is at the end of the video with the bike ride camera, motion sickness got me bad 🤕 so I had to fast-forward. Great video otherwise. I can't wait to visit NYC
Amazing footage of NYC on an eBike so cool. Never been there I'd rather see NYC thru your channel than walking among so many crowds of people. Great video thanks for sharing again & safe travels to you & Shannon.
Nice! I loved ALL the scenes, and I think it is appropriate to show the shorelines around the city as well. Really hope your pup is ok now...I'm seeing this a year later, so I have some catching up to do. Cheers!
I tried sleeping on that beach in New Jersey on a motorcycle trip I took in 2014. All the camp sites there were full. A park ranger told me I could sleep on the beach as long as I didn't set up my tent. Unfortunately these crazy tiny little bugs started swarming me so bad I had to leave before even falling asleep. It definitely was really cool seeing NYC in the background from the beach though.
@@MountainSpringsAdventures I'm sure as long as you don't get caught. It was also already almost 4am by the time I got to the little toll shack. Plus my tent was bright orange 🤣
Jersey Girl, here! Often went to Sandy Hook and had friends in nearby Sea Bright...Lived in Belmar a block from the ocean and on the Shark River...the fishing boats would pass by in the morning...Grew up 7 miles from NYC near where Giants Stadium is now....Great video!
IT'S JUST GRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT THAT YOU HAVE YOUR DOG LIVING WITH YOU! I'M SURE THAT MAKES IT BETTER FOR THE BOTH OF YOU!😊😊 AND SHE IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PUP!
I live in New York too. Just stay away from the main streets that are being used by ambulances, etc. Noisy. Most cities are not good but New York feels this way..... "Your coming out of a bar at 3 AM and your bombed. They would rather have you sleeping in your car than being forced to drive" Makes sense.
A lot of people think it is, although I don't like sleeping with the AC on when other people are around just because I like to remain stealth while sleeping. As long as you're not within like maybe 10 ft of somebody, they probably won't even notice your engine kicking on.
I’m stealth camping in GA but I want to try New York because I’ve been seeing some really good rental properties for studios and micro apartments that would be just enough room for me. But I’ve always been intimidated by New York. Think I want to drive up there and give it a try 😬 I’m not a big city nor beach person either.
that's cool, I'm from georgia. what part of georgia?. New York is one of the worst places to stealth camp lol but that's why I wanted to try it. it's not ideal for an RV or a camper van, only for a stealth vehicle like a Prius
Awesome video. I have a brother and family that lives at West Harrison NY and a nephew at Manhattan. Use to team drive OTR through there with a semi and 53 ft trailer.. Too many people, tolls and traffic. Give me the country. But your video was a interesting tour. Thank you. Hope your dog gets to feeling better. Blessings and safe travels to you.
Yeah the traffic is pretty bad, especially in Manhattan. That's why I think having an e-bike is the best way to get around NYC, especially Manhattan. Also,a few of the bridges going from Manhattan to Brooklyn are free oh, so you can get around that $10 toll. But yeah you have to pay the $16 just to get into New York City unfortunately. Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed
Always be vigilant when parking in NYC, brother has a prius and the catalyst converter got stolen right under it overnight. Be ready to hunk the horn & carry at least a pepper spray as firearms are pretty much impossible to have in the city.
pepper spray inside a car is a bad idea. get a minibat, a nyc classic. fits in a backpack and if you bring a ball for your dog you've always got a reason to carry around a titanium bar. you can even take it on the subway
Union city right across from Manhattan is a good zone to do car camping.. I’ve got a Mercedes wagon setup. I bounce to a few cities and use the car to minimize hotel costs. No ever notices if you’re methodical about it. Union city is 5 miles away and 24/7 crunch fitness right there
@@MountainSpringsAdventures who knows what tomorrow brings. i can if i want to. looks cool. i have an atv winch on a bracket , i could recover from most situations. lol i have a set of blizaks for her in the winter, now she'll go anywhere. how's the puppy?
@@coyne777 yeah I've gone off roading in my Prius a lot and if I had a winch, I would have been able to get myself out of every time I got stuck. I could use a winch myself. My dog is good. Sick but asymptomatic.
👍⭐️What street was that? That parking location is pure GOLD! Amazing that you found a place to park like that without having to pay for parking & no parking signs. 💝
That's so cool. I will be doing a road trip from Baltimore heading west to catch the total solar eclipse in April, 2024. Planning on stealth car camping in my Audi A7. It's a great hatchback and with the rear seats folded down, has over 6' of floor space for my Nemo air mattress and sleeping bag. I have real dark tint on the rear side and back windows. Maybe Walmart lots, church parking lots, etc. Have an LAFitness membership for showers and such.
Two questions: 1. Do you charge your hybrid with solar panels or rely solely on gasoline generation? 2. Nice to know what you do away from your vehicle and whether you feel your life possessions are secure and when.
Nice trip. Gotta say tho you can’t really ride your bike on the sidewalk with pedestrians. You have to ride on the streets. You could get a ticket if a cop catches you. Its also dangerous for you and the pedestrians. Tourists never look around and could run into you at any moment. Otherwise, great video.
thanks, yeah I ride in the bike lane whenever it's available. sometimes there isn't a bike lane though, times square doesn't have bike Lanes on the street
Love your video! Thank you for sharing. One thing I do have to say being born and raised in NYC, there are absolutely NO WALMARTS in NYC whatsoever. New Jersey yes, NYC no. I just don’t want anyone being disappointed and thinking that they will find a Walmart in NYC. I’m glad you had a great time here and I hope and pray that your cute doggie 🐶 is ok. Happy Holidays!
I live in nyc and people live in their cars on the street on my block all the time. The difference between the people on my block and the people in other parts of the u.s. is that we don't call the police or ask you to leave. There are campers, prius campers, airstreams etc that are constantly on my block. One thing about ny - bring your dog with you they are welcome everywhere even when a store says no dogs. we are animal lovers so i recommend that you bring your dog with you and you dont want someone to see a dog alone in a car and think its abandoned. They will call the cops break in take your dog to animal control and tow your car. By the way I live in midtown west Manhattan. West side highway has a great park that goes from world trade to upper west side for the best bike ride ever!! I ride it every day! Have fun in ny!! Glad you have those window covers to hide your dog!!!
That's cool, I didn't see anybody living in a car, van, or RV except for that one area down by the airport that I showed in the video. I usually have an eye for it and can spot it. The only part of downtown i went through was part of Central and southern Manhattan. yeah I figured people would call the cops and smash the windows if they saw my dog in the car. I'll have to check out West side highway next time I'm there, thanks!
Nice vid, thanks for sharing the adventure. Heartworm treatment can be pretty expensive, talk to your vet about a preventative routine as preventing further infection may help her survive and possibly eliminate the heartworms over time. Good luck with her treatment and keep us informed on how she is doing.
I spent a week in a hotel in Manhattan in May. Being a smoker I spent a lot of time at street level at all times of day and night. You could have easily found a curbside parking space from the end of the business day through morning and probably felt szfe.
Would you show the outside of your car at nighttime so I can see exactly what it looks like with your inside lights on inside. Thanks. Like your channel a lot
I had never been to NY nor am not sure if my little feet can ever experienced walking in their streets. Thanks for sharing, I had journeyed these gorgeous city through you. Stay safe. 😷😷
i hitch hiked to newyork 20 years ago, next time im in usa i want to buy a leaf or prius and travel your country for few months, im so envious your doing it now :)
@@MountainSpringsAdventures yes I would like Prius but here leaf 2016 plate is 5k£ a Prius is double that so won't buy here . Prius needs less planning in journey . I'll just have to see what is available when come over , where's cheapest place to buy a Prius in USA or canada. do you think ?
Great video! I have 1 question. How can you be stealth in the city, when the hybrid engine kicks on every like 5min to recharge the battery? If the engine didn't come on it would be perfect cause no one would know you are in the car (stealth). But when the engine kicks on it is a big give away that someone is in the car/the car is on. So in curious how you deal with that or how do you feel about that part specifically? I live in the city and want to do stealth camping but that is my 1 issue and I have not heard anyone talking about that part specifically. Thanks man, GREAT Videos!
I have a 2013 Prius and if I have the A/C on, my car makes a racket even when it's not using the gas engine. I think it's the compressor turning on and off, or else it's the fan. Not sure how to overcome that in order to be stealth besides turn everything off, in which case you might roast your ass off depending on the time of year.
It’s good to see New York from the perspective of someone that is not from there. What you did I wouldn’t do willingly. I’ve seen to many things that I would like to forget to even sleep overnight in the car. However I did have to sleep overnight near Manhattan Beach because my car broke down in 2002. I was 19 yrs old and petrified. Lucky for me it was fall and it was not so cold that night. It was also a nicer part of town. In the morning I tried to turn the engine one more time and it turned on just in time to avoid a parking ticket, 😂.
I’m a Steve Wallis fan and just found your video. I’m in Jersey, born in Westchester so this was very cool to watch. Sandy Hook is great early in the season!
Hope your doggie feels better and recovers quickly from her heartworm issue. Did I hear that right for the ebike? $0.18 a minute? So one hour is approximately $10. I could have sworn that you said the rental was for 24 hours at the start of the video. Way to go on a really fun couple of days in the city. Really makes me want a Prius instead of a stealth minivan...lol! Especially with my four little furbabies! Thanks for all the tips.
Thank you very much. Actually, it was the regular (non-electric) bikes that were $15 for 24 hours. The e-bikes are more expensive at $0.18 per hour. Sorry I didn't make that clear Vans are great, they have more room inside than a Prius
@@MountainSpringsAdventures ah...that makes sense. Either way, I am glad you shared that info because I have always wanted to rollerblade and ride a bike through Central Park and didn't know that was even an option for someone out of town. You are right about the van having more room, but with the summer coming that ac is critical with the doggies. That alone makes it worth it, not to mention that fantastic mpg savings!
@@alisinwanderland that's cool, yeah it's super easy to rent a bike, all you need is the Lyft app on your phone. I think an e-bike is the best way to explore NYC. maybe you could check out the Toyota sienna hybrid, it has the climate control feature also and it is a minivan.
Police Prius 😆 I adore my '06... been to west coast to East coast, PNW, UT, TX, NV, AZ, OR, MD, DC, OH, ID, CA, Canada, Mexico, NE and keep going on Adventures. The best is wake up with the sound of the sea and waves, make coffee all from the comfort of my Prius. I'm tall and I fit so perfect laying down in the back.
Totally loving your videos. Thank you for sharing your adventures and life in a Prius.
Glad you like them, thanks for watching
👍⭐️You are the perfect Poster Guy for Prius. They should pay you. 💝
Thank you 😊
Loved watching the New York tour
Amazing how you have a microwave in the car too 🤗
Amazing footage of NYC on an eBike so cool.
Cheers!
Thanks. My dog Shannon has fully recovered from heartworms now! Yes, please check my other videos if you want!
That's cool, I didn't think they would let you sleep on the beach like that. Maybe you could pitch a tent in the little woods area next to the beach.
@@MountainSpringsAdventures I'm sure as long as you don't get caught. It was also already almost 4am by the time I got to the little toll shack. Plus my tent was bright orange 🤣
A couple of poles and Mosquito Netting if your on the beach snoozin 🤓
That was pretty cool of you to adopt that dog.
Thanks for taking us on your tour of New York City it’s you.
You're welcome, glad you liked it
YESSSS thats my local!!!! hope you had fun!!
So sorry to hear that your fur baby is not well. Hope she has a speedy recovery 🙏🏽💕
Thank you 🙂
Great video thanks for sharing! Prius on!
The thing about nyc is no one is going to care that you're living in your car. Pretty common there and people won't bat an eye.
By the way you pick really good music for your videos. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks yes I love good instrumental music and using it in my videos
This video is highly underrated. Excellent work
Much appreciated!
I've been searching for a video like this for a long time. I live in my car and want to visit NYC.
Cool, glad you enjoyed it, I figured it was a unique topic for a video
U made my day man, cool video!!!!!
So glad you liked it 😊
Jersey Girl, here! Often went to Sandy Hook and had friends in nearby Sea Bright...Lived in Belmar a block from the ocean and on the Shark River...the fishing boats would pass by in the morning...Grew up 7 miles from NYC near where Giants Stadium is now....Great video!
GREAT INTRO!!!! 🔥🔥🔥 CONTENT AS ALWAYS
Thank you so much for the support! I really, really appreciate it!
Watching stealth campers on priuses makes me want to buy one as my next car. Too bad its sooo expensive here in the Ph.
Where is the PH? Mine was only $3100 used
IT'S JUST GRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT THAT YOU HAVE YOUR DOG LIVING WITH YOU! I'M SURE THAT MAKES IT BETTER FOR THE BOTH OF YOU!😊😊 AND SHE IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PUP!
SORRY TO HEAR YOUR DOG IS UNDER THE WEATHER. I HOPE IT GOES WELL AT THE VET.
Sending healing blessings to your dog!
Is the Prius quiet enough when using the AC or Heater overnight that you can use it when stealth camping? Thanks.
A lot of people think it is, although I don't like sleeping with the AC on when other people are around just because I like to remain stealth while sleeping. As long as you're not within like maybe 10 ft of somebody, they probably won't even notice your engine kicking on.
I've never been to NY. Thanks for sharing!
Cool car!!
Thanks, your welcome!
Don't move here...NYC is crumbling with crime, rats, crackheads and filth. I'm praying to leave.
@@MountainSpringsAdventures I never saw your reply but I was in the city, Atlanta and then Macon and Thomasville. All over Georgia lol.
@@emmanuelking9988 sounds like Atlanta 🤣 it would only be temporary like 3-6 months. I’m a nomad. There’s no where I want to settle down fully.
@@FreeSpiritMom
Please stay vigilant out there...enjoy your travels and your freedom! 🙏🚐🏞
Be ready to hunk the horn & carry at least a pepper spray as firearms are pretty much impossible to have in the city.
thanks, yeah the Prius has a very expensive catalytic converter so thieves target it. thanks for the tips
@@MountainSpringsAdventures
AND it's so easy to get at it...
Gone in 30 seconds 😡😭
pepper spray inside a car is a bad idea. get a minibat, a nyc classic. fits in a backpack and if you bring a ball for your dog you've always got a reason to carry around a titanium bar. you can even take it on the subway
It's happened to me twice in San Francisco where I live. I can't have a Prius anymore, which is a bummer.
This is impressive! Awesome adventure and video!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Union city right across from Manhattan is a good zone to do car camping..
I’ve got a Mercedes wagon setup. I bounce to a few cities and use the car to minimize hotel costs.
No ever notices if you’re methodical about it.
Union city is 5 miles away and 24/7 crunch fitness right there
Just stumbled on your channel and enjoyed this video. I'll be checking out more of them!
So glad you enjoyed it! More vids coming out soon also
good job. got my prius back last week w/lift and new struts
Cool, how do you like it? Do you plan on going off-roading in your Prius?
Not sure what street you're referring to
That's so cool.
Two questions:
Well done Karen good point.
This is really interesting. I've never been to NYC, so it was great getting to check it out. ☺🙋♀️
Sorry to hear about your dog. Hope she feels better soon.
Thank you
Subbed as soon as you said you reduced that beautiful dog.
You’re a good man!
Cool content
Thank you! Glad you like the content
I'm so sorry about your pup. I hope she's feeling a lot better now.
She is :)
Hope your dog gets well soon. 😎
Thanks
Hells Kitchen does have free parking and is a short walk from Times Square... The app SmoothPark is super helpful
@@itoohavedreams yeah I think I parked near Hell's kitchen once
Cute dog ❤
So Sorry about your dog. Love the adventure to New York. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, she is doing fine, glad you enjoyed it
Stealth-camping in New York City is amazing!
Nice vid, thanks for sharing the adventure. Heartworm treatment can be pretty expensive, talk to your vet about a preventative routine as preventing further infection may help her survive and possibly eliminate the heartworms over time. Good luck with her treatment and keep us informed on how she is doing.
Yeah my dog is already on a preventative. She's been on heartworm medicine for the slow kill method of heartworms, thank you
@@MountainSpringsAdventures we have one going through the same thing now as well.
That little island was sandy hook. A favorite place of mine to go to and very special cool place to explore.
Yes, sandy hook. There's lots of historical buildings and stuff also there
Great video and channel. Can't wait to watch it all.
Thanks! Make sure to sub, glad you enjoyed it
Nice video! Hope your pup will be ok.
I just bought a Prius to get out of needing to sleep in a tent anymore. So worth it.
I spent a week in a hotel in Manhattan in May. Being a smoker I spent a lot of time at street level at all times of day and night.
You could have easily found a curbside parking space from the end of the business day through morning and probably felt szfe.
Near Central Park
Would you show the outside of your car at nighttime so I can see exactly what it looks like with your inside lights on inside. Thanks. Like your channel a lot
Amazing guy..sorry for your dog, she's sick..hope she's ok now 👌
They used to have stables in Center Park where you could rent horses. Fun way to see the park.
that would be fun, I love riding horses
I had never been to NY nor am not sure if my little feet can ever experienced walking in their streets. Thanks for sharing, I had journeyed these gorgeous city through you. Stay safe. 😷😷
Hey Maria, glad you liked it, same to you
Please update us on how your dog is doing! Great video btw!
Thank you. My dog is asymptomatic, but could take years to get rid of the heartworms

Yes... Chances are she'll live fine with medications for a long time after the initial shock 💖
Excellent video as usual

i hitch hiked to newyork 20 years ago, next time im in usa i want to buy a leaf or prius and travel your country for few months, im so envious your doing it now :)
Cool, I hope you get to do that! A leaf is fully electric I believe
Thanks man, GREAT Videos!
that is my big question too.
Thank you so much this was awesome!
Glad you liked it
It’s good to see New York from the perspective of someone that is not from there.
Great video! Miss NYC ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m a Steve Wallis fan and just found your video. I’m in Jersey, born in Westchester so this was very cool to watch. Sandy Hook is great early in the season!
Cool, glad you found the video. Yeah I've watched some of his stealth camping videos, sandy hook is a super neat place for sure
Thank you for this great information. What resource did you use to find the RV street in East Jamaica, New York?
How can you not like the beach :) and end up on it twice lol I for one love beaches so thankyou
I do like beachs, its just not my favorite type of places to go usually
Sorry I didn't make that clear
Vans are great, they have more room inside than a Prius
@@MountainSpringsAdventures ooo...just Googled that. Great suggestion!!! I am excited to see that the Sienna has a 3500lb towing capacity too.
Police Prius 😆
I adore my '06... been to west coast to East coast, PNW, UT, TX, NV, AZ, OR, MD, DC, OH, ID, CA, Canada, Mexico, NE and keep going on Adventures. The best is wake up with the sound of the sea and waves, make coffee all from the comfort of my Prius.
I'm tall and I fit so perfect laying down in the back. Such a perfect car... currently getting 52.7 mpg. I changed my air filter and 'glide' as much as possible for best MPG🧞♀️
Glad you're enjoying it, I haven't actually been out to the West Coast yet, I want to though. I'm from the east coast and the farthest west I've been is Utah/Arizona
I've never actually found a campsite or somewhere to sleep on the ocean like that, that's pretty awesome
