      I think its a lot more interesting when people make campers out of smaller spaces like priuses or pickup truck beds. When you have to fit all the necessities for survival and comfort into such a small space, it forces you to come up with creative solutions. Sprinters are nice and open, but you dont really have to think about how to make a home in there. You just throw in a full sized bed and some other large appliances and your good to go.

    I've got my inverter put in and tried out my small instant pot, an infrared cooktop and a 700 watt microwave. All work great. Did a dry run of powering the essentials(freezer, refrigerator, modem, 2 latops and 4 LED lamps) in my home using 4-50 foot extension cords as a backup for a power outage. Most important thing is not to draw more than 1000 watts total at one time so you don't overtax your main battery. Why doesn't Toyota make a small camper using the Prius motor. I'd get one in a heartbeat.

      Yep, too easy to get blood clots in your legs and travel to your heart or lungs and you die from sitting in the front seat too long. Make sure you get horizontal at least 7 hours a day every day. Sleep in the back always. (Just ask YTer Car Living Case about that. Ended up in the emergency room from sleeping in the front seat kf his car.)

    • @robkunkel8833
      @robkunkel8833 3 роки тому +3

      Having a seat that folds down helps.

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer 3 роки тому

      I guess going to sleep in the driving position could be subconsciously habit forming.
      But because most of my car sleeping was 1 or 2 nights at a time, and the driver's seat goes completely horizontal, that is what I normally did. Not worth setting up a bed and crawling to it for just a night or two. And I never confused driving position (looking out the windshield) with sleeping position (looking at the roof and actually having a black sheet stretched out above me). As for clots, I can get my legs horizontal with feet behind the brake pedal. The trick is to not step on the brake pedal if the car is in Ready Mode (a fancy way of saying On and ready to drive) which would ruin your stealth with brake lights. In some cars, the brake lights come on even with the car off! I discovered that when sleeping on the front floor of a rental car in a national park (rangers tend to look in the back for people). I got a knock on the window in the middle of the night because my brake lights were on! But it was from people telling me to get off the brake pedal before the ranger found me!
      Linda of Serene and Simple Life sleeps in the driver's seat in various positions, living in a Highlander, preferring it to a bed in the back. But she's the exception to the rule among people living fulltime in a vehicle. In any case, it's such a space-saving move, that it's worth figuring out whether it works as well for you as a bed. It does also have the huge advantage of being able to much more quickly drive away if things go bump in the night that you want to get away from. Plus easier access to HVAC controls, lights, horn, etc.

The only special thing we do is to keep the garage heat on during the winter time. Temperature extremes are hard on batteries. If you buy a used Prius, five years old or older be sure to check or replace the "House" battery, or "Control" battery. It's about the size of a regular car battery and it controls the entire car, sending signals to the traction battery and it also powers the audio system and other things. If that goes bad a Prius won't start or do anything.

      Even if it was 100% sealed and tested in a lab by professionals, it would bother me that I’m potentially putting my mental health at risk by breathing in gasoline fumes that could escape if the bottle manages to leak. Not to mention the highly explosive nature of a sealed container of gas. I’d just rather keep an eye on my fuel gauge and if I absolute had to carry extra gas, I’d get a exterior luggage rack and store a five gallon container. Cause I mean, an extra 15 miles sounds cool but if you’re low on gas and decide to park somewhere secluded instead of finding a gas station and then you end up running completely out of gas, I don’t have any sympathy for you lol. And if you do run out of gas but the nearest gas station is 25 miles away then the extra gas is pretty much pointless.

    Amazing! Makes me want to rethink car camping and possibly looking for a Prius

    Nice job! Thanks! Yeah, the Prius is the best small camper ever. Fantastic versatility. The 24/7 heating and cooling systems along with electrical are pure gold missing in every small camper setup up to an RV. Very economical.
    Flat-folding Popup shower tent is a nice addition for changing/cleaning/etc privacy or even tarps and poles for more outside versatility.

      Yeah those shower things are cool, I actually have one, I just don't carry it in my Prius

    Thank you! So much. I've gotten so many ideas from your build. You make it seem simple, but obviously this is after it's been polished. Great job on the build & the video. Im so happy for the links. Hope you do updates as you go along. :)

    Prius camper videos from the last few years should usually come with a shout out to PSC Camper Conversions. We're all using tons of his ideas, he deserves more props for his ideas and tutorials.

      Yeah the reason I got a 12 volt fridge is because I saw a few Prius camper videos that had a 12-volt fridge, his was one of them. I also used his idea for the USB adapter for my accent lights, the microwave, and the little plastic storage bin on top of the microwave. I've tried to get in contact with him but with no success. He definitely has some awesome ideas
      I'm really grateful for all the Prius camping videos on UA-cam, I wouldn't have had the confidence to build my camper without them, and the few Prius camping Facebook groups.

      I've never heard of PSC. Nor have I seen anyone else putting a fridge where I put one in my Prius Prime, not that it was rocket science on my part. Namely, right where the one in this video is, except mine is a different brand and 50 liters rather than 30. I did spend probably 40 man hours or more gathering up exact size specifications of many brands and models of fridges, which is much more difficult than it sounds. Many have incorrect specifications in many ads, but usually a dimensioned drawing can eventually be found under some other brand obviously made from the same molds, probably at the same factory. But even then, with the tapered shapes, and widely varying vent locations, cord locations, lid opening directions, and a bunch of other things, it's not easy to absolutely max out what you can fit. It was tempting to get a small one and be done with it, but to me, if I'm dedicating that space to a fridge, I'm going to go to the effort of not wasting one cubic inch of car space.
      As in this video, I spaced it up from the floor with a tool storage container, to avoid having to cut the passenger seat tracks or have them destroy the fridge.
      It fits under my pillow, as I put the bed in the more usual location on the passenger side. I can still fit in the passenger seat OK with it there, too. The biggest influences on my own designs, were Suanne Carlson (Bob Wells' HOWA partner) and Intricate Explorer (former Uber/Lyft driver, and current adventure photographer).
      I'm still debating removing the passenger seat, versus the driver's side rear seat, versus neither. So far, neither.

    Awesome! This is more like the setup I had in my Blazer when I lived in it on the road. Minimal work, nothing fancy, inexpensive, and total stealth. The big fancy vans are SO OBVIOUS even when they are “stealth”. And bluntly, if I want to live in something that looks like a house, I’ll just live in a house. For living in a vehicle and traveling, this is perfect. Love it.

    When you cut holes like that for your storage area, you should cut around at an angle,, that way it will sit without the need for those 2x4s.
