This in turn makes your money worth less, which means everything costs more (including real estate), which in turn also drives up taxes on the basis of your property value, which in turn drives up the rent prices. Because your currency is being inflated in value, people look for options on where to store their money over having it devalued by sitting in a bank, so real-estate becomes a popular (if not only) option, and this in turn drives up demand and property prices while the value of your money continues to drop due to ongoing inflation. And because prices keep going up, the cost associated with paying taxes/maintenance etc on properties keeps going up, and therefore so does your rent. People need to start better understanding the core reason for why things are getting out of control, and the cause-and-effect relationship trickle down effects of our governments fiscal mismanagement, and not just point the finger at investors and say "Eat the rich".

Patrick, this amazes me - I never thought one could do this in the City. It's only a couple hours away from me but a whole different world. Kudos to all of Van Alley's occupants! Community indeed!
Hello I live in a different part of Brooklyn, in a skoolie, and I will say that if you are on the right street, people will just walk by and leave you alone. Once I opened my eyes to the fact of living in a home on wheels, I began to notice all the old and new RV's parked all over the city, that people are living in. Why pay $1300.00, for a room in Brooklyn, and have to share kitchen and bathroom with strangers. And I too have a cheap chinese diesel heater, and they are great.

I like the cool hats in a show of solidarity to their friendships. He’s right, in big cities there’s no social life, I barely know my neighbors in a condo community and only know their faces and cold hello’s in the parking lot. These folks here got each other’s back’s & actually hangout reflecting on life.
I love too see the Van Life community coming together to make it a fun and safer experience. Once we start RV or Van-lifiing I hope to find a good community to travel with.
This is amazing. I love to see the creativity and ingenuity involved in some of these van builds. Sadly, this would never fly in most cities, where overnight parking is strictly prohibited.
Finding parking to be undisturbed will increasingly become difficult. Even in national forest and BLM land, they're adding more restrictions. Walmarts more and more are banning overnights. Rest stops are putting up time limits for some amount of hours. A lot of used vans will probably hit the market over the next year, and it will be people who can afford rent but thought they'd save money, and realize there are too many headaches and legislation efforts to make it harder. The people who will make it work will be those who decide those headaches aren't as painful as giving away most of what they make at their job to rent: a van is depreciating, but rent is zero equity.
Very interesting video. You all have a roof ovet your heads, thank goodness. Have a good life all of you, p.s. you are a good looking man too. From Australia.
Van Alley is gone, they close it off for reconstruction like it was predicted quite some time ago so everybody basically moved couple of blocks to the other street 😬

After viewing many van life videos my impression is that if you don't camp in trailer parks most of the time then you enter into survival mode that stresses you out.
Been at it for a year and a half, paid for 7 nights in campgrounds that entire time. I don't stress. Most of the people stressing are doing so because they are new, just learning the ropes and lack self confidence. Once that resolves itself with experience it is mostly smooth sailing.

Way to live in NY, guys and gals! Legend. Everything good for all you at Van Alley. Van Alley: a state of being. I lived in NYC for a decade. I spent the last few years in Park Slope, living mostly rent free in apartments my cousin the developer was warehousing for condos. I had to move every year or so, but rent free in NY works. It's an amazing place. Y'all have fun now, ya hear?
@@Blaaclava Warehousing was an 80s/90s term that had to do with gentrifying. I have no idea if term is used anymore, but the activity remains: buying up entire apartment buildings in areas that are going to increase in value (which is pretty much every area now with population explosion becoming unavoidably obvious), or areas you are going to "force" to increase in value. The entrepreneur may be required to have a certain percentage of apartments occupied as they try to get out the remaining tenants. They put their friends or family in there as placeholders. It may be a legal necessity. I don't know either way. I know my cousin was not the best person. Then they repair and upgrade the buildings and apts and sell them as condos/coops/condops. I don't know the legalities because I was only one of the placeholders being invited to live rent free, as long as I was willing to move every year or so to a new apt in the hood. Many complain about gentrification and it would be a beautiful thing for everyone to have a safe home of their liking. I hope our world can eventually accommodate everyone in a humane way. There's a lot of work to be done in that direction.) The experience on the ground was this: the beautiful boned old brownstones my cousin was buying usually had multiple vacancies and many sketchy occupants. They were not being taken care of by the renters and had not been cared for by the former landlords. Each building was in very bad shape. One had been a bona fide crack house that needed to be cleaned up for everyone's benefit. One, that I lived in for over a year, had a number of heroin addicts and one grandma aged heroine dealer living there. Heroine addicts are generally safer to live around than crack heads because they're usually mellower. Obviously they can't be trusted when they're jonesing so you want to lock up your camels, but crack heads are usually a dramatic danger to anyone in their vicinity whether they're high or not. A couple times when I came home from work, I stepped over them passed out and drooling in the stairwell with rubber tied around an arm. Park Slope is now an extremely high end neighborhood. Good or bad, I was there for the first part of the transition.
Great point about knowing your neighbors and how fellow vanlifers always seem to try to help each other out. I left NY in a van 10 yrs ago, and if I ever returned, I'd head straight for Van Alley or any other sweet little community like it. 👍
Great video! I'm visiting Brooklyn from Chicago for a month. I had the option to book a room and the cheapest option was $1400 for a room I liked and parking was seperate. I park and sleep mainly at a vince lombardi service area or at an indoor parking very close to work. Can't believe I saved $1400. I shower at LA fitness and only eat out.

Vandwelling can be done here in NYC. There are 2 in my neighborhood far uptown, they are quiet, discreet, clean, no problems. There is parking, but you will have to move more often, sorry to see van alley going away. For my research so far, most people that seem to make van life work are retired and not usually full-time. If you are entrepreneurial or skilled professional, if you have passive income or inherited a decent chunk, you can make it. If you are wise and don't wear out your welcome, friends and family can give you a break occasionally. A great possibility for this lifestyle is pairing it with university study- for the cost of one class per semester you have access to a cafeteria, a gym, sometimes a pool, bathrooms, a library and employment opportunities, and with a parking permit, now you don't have to move the van as often. Another possibility with van life is the potential to make it on a part-time income.

Wait till the mayor of NY and all the people on city council see this video

Van Alley: a state of being.
I lived in NYC for a decade. I spent the last few years in Park Slope, living mostly rent free in apartments my cousin the developer was warehousing for condos. I had to move every year or so, but rent free in NY works. It's an amazing place. Y'all have fun now, ya hear?
Thank you very much for the feedback Erika
What is warehousing for condos 🤔
@@Blaaclava no idea what they are talking about lol
The last few minutes of this video were great and inspirational

i used to live at 34berry for 8 years.... i am in a van now!
I hope everything works out for you guys. I respect what your doing and the struggle and commitment you have made. To make your situation work.
Oh god not a domestic terrorist profile picture.
Must be a white guy
I love those recessed wall shelves, gives the interior a stylish modern look, that's a first seeing that
Yeah, mine too
Wow the ingenuity gives me so much passion and respect, never give up
Thanks for another great video, Patrick! Awesome people who love the freedoms of being nomadic with a wonderfully unique spot in this waterfront alley. Kudos!
Thank you very much Susan
Foresty forest has set the gold standard for diesel heater standards 👍🏻🇺🇸😂 He also did some quiet pump options He has also mentioned keeping the exhaust on it clean Carbon buildup
Very cool
You should identify a new Van Alley, so you can all meet up again and keep the community going. ♡
You've got a great, classic NYC look. So handsome!
Yes
Hey Patrick, still working on van😉 never ending like a house🤣
I'm living in my van full-time now. I'm houseless not homeless🤣 I bring my van into NYC during the week for work (not telling where) 😉and drive to New Jersey on the weekends at friends, family or other spots. I just installed a Dickerson marine heater in the nick of time. I'm definitely interested in having a van get together. I was at a custom van get together in Pennsylvania just pass summer. It was pretty cool 😎
Great to hear from you Jeff. Let’s get a video done soon.
GREAT video.
I can't tell you how much I got from it. It's just great to know I'm not stuck. Yes, van life will be in my (near) future. Thanks for what you're doing. KEEP IT GOIN. It gives ppl hope.
As long as people keep their vans in good condition and don’t trash the place I think it’s a great thing
I sincerely hope this video does not attract the wrong attention. Good for them on finding an alternative way around the rat race and ridiculous cost of housing. I agree in letting certain “friends” go. Best wishes.
This van Alley was covered by a major news station two years ago
@@NewJerseyOutdoorAdventures oh! I guess they’re not there any longer. 😞
No worries. There are so many pretty, convenient and safe places to park your van outside of Manhattan.
They are still beholden to the rat race. They need to work to buy food and improvements for the vans. The only difference is they are much more mobile than someone who has, say, a house mortgage.

Thank you for the useful information.
damn we lived a year in our van in NYC never saw you guys before, bummer.
