This may be the reason we’ve all been saving fabric and out scraps!
omg! laugh or cry? anyway, every tragedy has its upside. when this is all over, we can restock our stashes--GUILT FREE!😄
You're right. This is by far the easiest mask tutorial. My local hospital wants an insert for a one time use filter. I use two 4 x 9 pieces for the back. I sew a 1/2" seam along the long side leaving a 3 1/2 - 4" opening in the center. Be sure to back tack at beginning and end of the opening. Then pink the seam and press it open. The back is ready for use in your tutorial with the desired insert. Thank you, Jenny for posting this.
Oops that should be two pieces 3 1/2 x 9
You are right....NO elastic.....this is a nice easy project. My son is an RN. LOVE YOU
Thank you for being a calm port in a diy mask making storm. So many patterns and tutorials. Finally one I can follow without weird bells and whistles.
Amen to that!
I agree !
I find that the ties actually provides better closure around the face. I made the one with the elastic and one with the ties. I work in a hospital laboratory. Thank you for the great tutorial.
I have been stuck in the house due to shoulder surgery & the covid-19 virus. I will finally get out of the house in a couple of days. With the seasonal allergies I have this will make the people around me more comfortable.
Barbara, please take care when you go out, we'll worry about you :)
Jenny, I just want you to know that I am praying for your safety and your family and friends during these times. Bless you for all of your videos. They have been a blessing to me for years..... yea, i'm not much of a talker. I prefer to listen.....lol And I'm sure many others have enjoyed your videos. Thanks for all you do! God Bless MSQC!
Good tutorial. My RN children really appreciate these as they are using them to cover their N 95 masks so that they last longer. I ran out of elastic and twirl tape and was wondering how to do the ties in this tutorial made it so easy. Thank you. I have made about 60 for a local doctors office and nursing home. This is exactly what they asked for they do not want elastic.
Thank you Jenny, these have many uses, one is to make sure you are not passing your spittle or droplets as you speak when you HAVE to go out in public to grocery store or post office, if we all wore one when we are out it will help keep our germs from spreading air borne and landing on things everyone touches. .......Remember Once Use, when you get back into the car or house take them off before stepping your home and throw into the washing machine, so having several available for each family member helps so we are not tempted to use them twice without a wash. These mask if needed can free up the N95s for the Dr and nurses and medical staff in direct contact with the virus patient..............we have had 4 exchange students over the years and each one wore a mask if they were not feeling well, ....... Thank you Jenny for sharing this method as well, this one is so much easier for those of us with arthritis and hold the elastic can be challenging.
thanks for responding so quickly to a changing world! I used your video showing how to make masks with elastic a few days ago and now that all the elastic in the world is gone, i'm using this video to show me how to make masks with fabric ties.
Nice job! No bells and whistles! Simple, clear and no annoying music! Love it! Thanks!
Easiest pattern I have tried. Neighbor’s and family have ask me to make for them. Thank you Jennie bless you ❤️
Jenny, God Bless you! Your beautiful personality and smile keeps me going some days. Today is my birthday and watching this video has just made it more special. Thanks for the tutorial and let's heal each other by being kind to each other regardless of race, faith, or where you come from. Have a beautiful day.
As I have run out of elastic, love this option, keep sewing America!
I have watched too many videos! Yesterday I made two masks for my husband and I thought I was going to go crazy. Now I watch your video and it all becomes clear! Missouri Star Quilt company and Jenny are angels on Earth. What would we do without you? God bless you!
i have to tell you. There are lots of patchwork people with sites and they give us their classes and stuff. But there are two that are so good You are one and the other is Donna Jordan.
So what makes you both so special and "good" I have done some thinking about this. You both come over as genuine sincere honest people that don't pretend to be anything else but yourselves. I guess this take confidence and self esteem to be yourselves. In this time of lock down when some of us lucky ones have time to think deeply this came up for me.
Thank you to you both and what a wonderful world we live in with access to such nice women
Thank you very much for your thoughts, Claudette! We hope you'll continue to enjoy all the tutorials even during these trying times.
I'm so glad you said that a home made mask won't stop the virus. Also glad you pointed out that it will stop you touching your nose etc. We need to be realistic abkut these things. Stay safe everyone.
This was the best tutorial on masks that I've seen. So easy and straight forward. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much Jenny,. I am using my little bit of elastic and then ties. It seems like the ties may be easier. I really appreciate what you have done. God's blessings to you, your family and everyone who reads this. Stay safe. Stay in.
Thank you Jennie. This worked for me beautifully. My husband's company will be happy that when he wears them he'll be saving them money. Made them from scraps that were used to make the toddler grandchildren's sheets. Outside is plaid with the ties out of race car fabric, but the inside is made of bright pink and yellow polka dotted lady bugs! What the others don't know won't hurt them. Stay safe and healthy, beautiful lady!
Thanks so much for these mask videos, Jenny. I have made some with the elastic, received compliments and had people ask for the pattern. They are so quick and easy! God bless you and keep you safe.
Love you, Jenny! Stay well, be safe! Your smiling face is a light in this dark time.
I’m in awe of Jenny’s machine. I made a mask last night which took me about 40 minutes- 30 of which was spent picking out stitches and cursing at my machine. How amazing it would be to have a machine that just goes!!!!
Marnie Carvalho same!! My Machine does NOT like sewing over the pleats, and with just an inch left on my first mask, I broke my needle😠
MissCraftyCat81 Same! I broke a needle on my first mask as well! 🤬
Thank you showing how to make a very simple mask. Thank you for adding that it will not protect one from the virus but will remind the wearer to not touch her face. Blessings to your family. May you all be safe.
Heard a note from some hospital workers to use different fabric patterns for inside and outside of the masks, so people wearing them know which side should be on the outside, facing patients, and which side is against their mouths. Just passing that along!
Edit: well, you said as much at the end of the video, Jenny! I shoulda waited and bit my tongue. 😂
Not everyone watches to the end. Your comment was still helpful. :)
I use a solid cotton fabric for the liner, so it makes it easy to tell the difference.
Amazing way to keep sewing masks, now that I’m out of elastic! Easy too, thank you, stay safe...
Thank you, Jenny for once again coming to the community's aid! I ran out of elastic and now I can still make masks! They are now being required in my town.
Appreciate your time and talent, Jenny, it's always welcome (along with your smiling face and upward attitude). If you do not have the extra cotton material for strip ties ... take a T-shirt and cut it into 2" strips side to side, Give it a little tug, and it will roll inward from each side making a great tie. {When you sew to the mask itself, be sure to cover both sides of the top and bottom of the mask by gently unrolling the sides of the ties along the edges}. God bless and stay safe.
You are so lovely and gracious. Thank you for your tutorial.
New York thanks you, Jenny - stay safe out there.
Thank you , Jenny. I thought I had enough elastic to last forever, but it only made 40 masks. Now I will start on my stash of bias tape. Your method is perfect for making lots of masks. My goal this year was to use up my quilt scraps, I am so happy I can put them to good use. I hope you and your family are well and safe. Now, go wash your hands! ❤️
Leave it to Jenny! I have watched numerous videos and even tried a couple, this one makes more sense. Although I am not a quilter, I can make strips fast enough! Thanks Jenny! 💕👍
This was the best tutorial I found. I don’t sew at all and my Mom can mend stuff. Had just bought a $80 sewing machine. These were relatively easy. We used bias tape and extra fabric fir the ties. Not perfect but functional!
I am a nurse. The elastic hurts the ears after a few hours. This is a great idea. Thanks for the tutorial.
@Cheryl Jergens
Thank you for letting us know
I made surgical caps and put buttons on them for my daughter! The elastic was hurting her ears.
I think so too. I had suggested this on someone else's video that was making them for hospitals, less irritating.
Cheryl Jergens That’s what my friend told me too she’s an R.N. And told me they prefer ties. So two friends and I have been making masks for her and her colleagues the last few days. We are using up our fabric stash following M.Q.Co.’s patterns. It’s been great and it keeps us occupied while we’re hunkering down🙂
@Cheryl Jergens or any others in nursing profession
I have materials to make masks. But I've been hesitating -
Is a "pocket" for a disposable "filter lining" preferred? Or would nursing professionals prefer no pocket?
OK Jenny, I can do this! Thank you for being clear, concise and positive!!! Love to you and your family. Quilters rock!
These are the best face mask instructions I have seen. Thank you for sharing
Leave it to you, Jenny..no frills, super fast, it gets the job done and uses up what we all have on hand. Thanks!
Thank you very much for your amazing tutorials and for keeping our minds off the craziness in the world right now.. it helps to feel like we are helping
Thank you for all that you do during good times and bad. You are loved💕
It's great to see you again,Jenny. You're still looking great. I made 2 masks from a pillowcase and rubberbands.
Jenny, You are a sight for sore eyes...I needed a good pattern, I and knew you would provide one...Thank you!
Jenny, you are brilliant! Thank you so much for your easy to understand instructions, and your kindness.
Thank you. My husband wears hearing aides and the elastic always takes the the hearing aide off at the same time. This was wonderful
Thank You Jenny for giving us the know-how to use our skills to help healthcare workers who are amazingly dedicated, seemingly fear- and tireless, and can use whatever we send their way.
Just made this mask very easy and glad to use my old binding strips. Thank you Jenny. Made this for myself and my son. So glad and thankful for the MIssouri Quilt Co. Great tutorial.
i have store bought binding from when i knew even less than i do now. SO glad to find an excuse to get rid of that awful stuff!😊
Oh Lord, how does she sew so fast and what a wonderful set up (jealous!). I will bet that she doesn’t stick herself 1000 times a day 🤔
You always make it look so easy. Love you Jenny! ❤️
I am happy to run across this tutorial for us beginner quilters/sewers. I'm also glad this one ties. I know I can't be the only one who would think elastic behind the ears would be uncomfortable.
Yes, I have been using left over Jelly Roll Strips.......So exciting that we are doing the same.........lololol does not take much for me to be excited.....lololol my daughter is in medicine and she took 50 yesterday , she tried them on called me to tell me the ones with the best fit, she said the ties were best fit, elastic was easier, so I am doing 50/50 now,
this was fantabulous. I have never sewn anything in my life.....was able to follow along and get it done. Thanks so much.
Absolutely the easiest face mask tutorial I've seen so far. I have a bunch of elastic coming in a few days but I think I like the ties better. I'll donate the elastic to someone. Thanks so much.
You made it so easy to sew the ties.Thank you.Happy sewing.
I’ve seen on the news a nurse was making these to fit over the N95 masks so they last longer. Awesome tutorial!!
So many are filled with self-importance and go out of their way to ''help''
but as yet there's no proof this indeed is useful. What is certain is that the waste and pollution have increased.
As well, as passing of germs on the surfaces of donated masks
Lili Schmidt, where are you hearing this from? If pollution has increased its most likely from all the ‘disposable’ masks that have been used. And there’s no getting away from that until this silent enemy of ours is gone. At least with the handmade masks, when this crisis is over, they can take them home and use them for another task they’re doing. Handmade masks are washable. All other commercial masks are not. All handmade masks are cleaned (most likely autoclave) by the receiving facility before being distributed to their staff, for that very reason you said...germs on the surface. Have a nice day. Stay healthy.

Lili Schmidt Self importance? Did you mean to say kind-hearted people who want to help our medical heroes in a time of dire need? These cloth masks are meant to be washed and reused. My niece uses hers over her N95 mask. Those masks are in short supply. Had you not heard? Now you know. Stay safe!

I LOVE your mask demo!! I've made approximately 40 masks, given to a local subacute facility as well as a student nurse, relatives and friends!!!! You guys are the absolute best ❤️!!!
Ginnie Moore hey! My mom is a Ginny too☺️ and I see you have made many, so if it’s ok, can I ask you for a tip? My machine does not sew well over my pleats and my needle broke with only an inch left on my first mask 😔 trying not to get discouraged so any tips are appreciated!!!
Thanks Jenny! My boss called me yesterday and asked me to make 50 tie masks for his employees, but he needs them in a couple of days. This is definitely the fastest, easiest version I have seen!
jennie, you are the BEST! Thank you for using your noodle to make work efficient for us older folks who just cant see/sit/or tolerate pain too long. Stay well. Love 🙋
Haven't even watched this yet and I already know it's Exactly what I wanted!! THANK YOU
... Yup. Perfect. 😊
I'm going to share this with my church. Our Pastor was asking for directions on how to make these face masks. Thank you Jenny 💗🙏💗🙏
I also will share with our mission ladies!
medium.com/@Cancerwarrior/covid-19-why-we-should-all-wear-masks-there-is-new-scientific-rationale-280e08ceee71
Thank you, Jenny! Your videos are ones I'm sharing with lots of people! They are simple and easy to follow. Thank you for both versions. I'm the Managing Director of Christian Youth Theater in Houston and we're making these for hospitals that are requesting and our families, so lots of folks needing easy-to-follow directions.
Thank you for your wonderful videos over the years, and ESPECIALLY for not having annoying ads from an insurance company I won't name but whom I will NEVER do business with.
Thank you for making this so simple! Even I can make this!
Thank you so much Jenny!! With love and best wishes from Haïti. I love your tutorials.
Jenny is the best! Such a pleasure watching her tutorials.
Love this pattern!!! It’s much better than elastic behind the ears for health care professionals. I have tons of fat quarters for the body of the mask and used lots of my jelly roll pieces for the ties.- they are the perfect width. I sewed the pleats in before sewing on the ties. Thank you, Jenny, for making this much easier!! ❤️
I received my elastic today from Amazon and I ordered it Sunday.
Thankfully I hoard craft supplies and still have lots of 1/4" elastic, have been making masks from your other tutorial and giving them away to friends and family. Grateful you posted this for when the elastic runs out! Stay safe everyone!
Thank you Jenny. Stay well. Happy Easter to you all
Jenny! I love your tutorials, and this one is no exception. Direct and to the point, but showing every step in the process. Sooooo helpful! Thank you!
2:16 Girl! Now I call that a basket full of binding. Lol Great video 💙🐝💙
One thing I did was tuck the ends of the ties in and stitched it down. This closed in the loose threads. Then I made mine just as you did. It works great.
If you use WOF to cut ties, you will have salvages on each end and won’t need to tuck raw edges in. That’s what I did.
@@carolthigpen3141 what is WOF?
WOF= width of fabric, you will have the selvege (woven edge) on the ends or edges of your fabric strips. This will not fray.
fray check!
Thank you, Jenny! With your help, I went into mask production mode today.
You are 100% correct all elastic is out of stock. I have been cutting and using hair ties. Thank you for the mask pattern.
I've made 50 so far with 12 just today like yours but saw your tut AFTER I was done.
I used 1.5" for ties x 45" L top and same for btm
The face mask with the ties are great for people with hearing aides - you can tie it on top of your head avoiding the hearing aides. The face mask with elastic around the ears does not work with external hearing aides.
Gary Hardin it’s also a problem if you need to wear blue tooth or AirPods.
Glasses can be a problem with the elastic masks too.
Yes🙌 my hearing aids always fall off or start dangling with ear elastic masks
Thank you Jenny and thank you to my MO Star Co. quilting community - You are all so helpful - What a way to serve our country - Staying home and Sewing - oh the sacrifice!
It's just one of the ways we sacrifice for our country! 😁
I love how you did this mask! Easy peasy! Chart shows that even a fabric mask will protect 50% than no mask at all. The N95 protects 95%. Not bad for fabric, homemade masks!
Thankyou. I've been told that ties are preferred so that the mask can be closer to the face and that if donating to hospitals, elastic doesn't survive long in the hot wash needed. Also if an inner pocket layer is added, then some extra protection can be slipped in to make it better.
I was going to use leftover binding strips for ties but it’s great to know jelly rolls are the correct length. Leaving the selvage on means no unraveling at the ends.
Great point about selvedge! I almost cut mine off but no need to.
As usual you are such a great tutor! I love the simple tutorials you always bring to us! Thank you so much. Stay safe and God continue to bless you, your family, and employees. ❤️🙏🏽🌏🇺🇸
Great simplified pattern! Thank you Jenny!
It's sad that things have gotten to the point that we are having to make face masks, but Jenny, you do a wonderful job providing the information that we need to get these completed quickly. Thanks for your contribution; now back to the machine.
Thank you, I've made the following alternations to this in order to add a filter and a nose twist tie piece. 1. The back piece I cut at 7x9" then cut into two at 3.5x9" pieces. I then sew those two smaller pieces back together along the 9" side, leaving a slit in the back to allow the filter to be inserted. Then i iron and sew along the 9" seam to keep it from fraying. Then I take the back piece & size it back to the 6x9" required. 2. I insert a twist tie into the top bias trip piece & sew on either side to make sure it doesn't slip out. Hoping this all makes sense. I love this mask video, as it's much easier to make quantity even with my two alternations.
thank you. I want to incorporate a pocket and metal nose piece in the masks I am making.
Lynda Hale , can you please add a couple photos of your masks in progress? Thanks.
Lynda Hale ,what kind of filters? Drs don’t want flannel because they sweat in it
Mariella Simmons I was going to use flannel for the inside “ side to face “ fabric? Would that be too hot for them? Thank you
Lynda Hale Great idea 💡 May I ask how many layers and what type of fabric you are using? I have read 100% cotton for outside layer and flannel for the inside layer, also another said 2 layers of cotton with fusible interfacing ironed on both. Thank you
This was the best video I could find. Jenny gives thorough instructions. Easy to follow. Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing your professional experience in helping to save lives by limiting the germs we release or take in for personal everyday use, and enabling us to positively contribute to literally the world as we do our part to limit exposure, and assist our community healthcare heroes with our leftover fabric. I will practice Angie's corrected 3-1/2 x 9" for the filter insert as well noted below in the comments. Love the 2 different colors for knowing which ones been to your mouth versus exposed to patients or the public.
I made both the elastic tie mask and this this version, and I prefer this one because it is a better fit. I put a piece of thin cotton batting in the middle.
The batting is a great idea! Thanks!
Great instructions. I can't make them fast enough. The need is so great.
I saw an easy tutorial earlier that added a filter pocket and she used a 3M filter from home depot that filters out some viruses she pulled the cardboard and the serrated part off and used the breathable filter part. I can't find that one now LOL
@@patriciacaborn7934 Please don't use Hepa filters or any other filters with fiberglass in them. It can cause long-term lung damage. This is a concern both when cutting the filters and when breathing through the filters.
@@rachelh5211 here is the link to the video m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10222208853558351&id=1474986696
If you put a pipe cleaner or bread twist tie under the binding on the top the mask can shape over the nose for a snugger fit.
I plan on doing that, thanks for the tip
How big do you cut the piece of pipe?
We had 17 gauge wire. Cut them into 4" sections, and curl the ends. No sharp points. Used 4" x 1.5" bias tape folded in thirds long way to make a tunnel, and sewed (appliqued) to the inside of the middle of the top, the bridge of the nose.
Beware some metals may rust when washed.
driver1928 Is this nose strip that is inside the small bias tape placed on the inside of the long bias strip tie or did you tuck it inside the long bias strip tie before stitching down?
This has to be the easiest pattern yet! Thank you Jenny!
This is easier than anything I've seen on UA-cam. Thank you a million times
aint it, that is so true, I thanked her for her easy to the point instructions. I just love it toooo
Thank you.
Our local hospital just asked for them.
They did ask for flannel for the inside of the mask.
I have lots of material!!!
thanks! i have left over flannel from a xmas wall hanging. i hated working w the flannel & 0wondered what to do w the left over pieces.😊
we were asked not to use flannel they said it holds too much moisture which could hold to many germs who is right?
Ginger Major as a nurse, I prefer no flannel for those reasons & because masks are hot enough on a regular day.
I made one for myself with flannel and it's awful...when I breath, the flannel gets wet, YUCK!
I now do 3 layers of cotton fabric.
So do i guess i need to get busy
This is the easiest and most clearly demonstrated of all the videos I've watched. thank you !
This is by far the best tutorial I have come across! The only thing I would do different is add a piece of pipe cleaner in the binding. Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial. This is greatly appreciated!!
Thank you jenny for a simple and efficient tutorial. I'm going to start making these masks this afternoon. I love that you have your iron right next to you!
Count on a quilter to show the most efficient construction.
For sure! This is the perfect tutorial!
I wonder if I can slide a piece of filter in the middle this is the best tutorial on masks I've seen thank you so much
Thank you so much! I have watched many of your tutorials in the past and knew I could count on you to show how to make a mask without elastic. I will have your video right beside me when I start!
Thank you for a great and easy way to sew a mask.
Definitely the easiest. Especially since we can't get elastic. Thanks Jenny.
Amazon has elastic. I just checked
@@jzedalis they wont for long.
I found elastic dodnt stay on my ears of the mask made for myself. So ties were used in surgery and for isolation in the hospital so ties are good
I made 3 pleats in mine to expand.
I've made 3 similar (I pleated before putting on the top binding strip). I like this idea better.
Thank you SO much for your tutorial!!!! I love Missouri Star Quilt company, and I love you Jenny Doan!!
Hi Jenny, so glad you have made one that ties!! Never thought about using my left over binding. I had thought about using left over jelly roll pieces sewed together for the length. I also added a piece of cotton batting inside for a bit more protection.
