  • Jen shares how to make a face mask and tips for making it more effective with non-woven interfacing. She also shows how to add elastic, and what to use if you can't find elastic or don't have it.
    Requirements & measurements:
    2 fabrics cut to 6" x 9"
1 piece non-woven fusible interfacing cut to 6" x 9" (you can make a mask without this if you don't have it).
2 strips of 1/4" elastic (1/8" will work) cut to 6.5" (may adjust length for comfort)

I’ve watched a number of videos. I’m a novice sewer and I appreciated this quote, “function over form. This is not a beauty contest!“ It really took the pressure off making a “perfect appearance” of a face mask and making a good enough one that performs well.

This is exactly how I have been making mine! They stitch up so fast! I used to work in the OR and preferred the elastic vs. the ties as they are quicker to take on and off and you could hang it off one ear, until you needed to cover your face and nose again. Great tutorial!

I like this pattern very much. The two things I have added: After the mask is turned, I insert a pipe cleaner that is secured at the top of the mask when sewing around the mask. After sewing around the mask, I place a 3/4” dart at the bottom of the mask. This seems to fit the mask better at the chin. Thanks for your great tutorials. Stay safe and well everyone. 🌹❤️🌹

It looks much less complicated then the other videos. And I think it's great that you're emphasizing that durability is the ultimate goal. My daughter works at a hospital and I send her a pic of the first one I made (with 2 pleats) and she said I needed to have them closer together. Then I saw a video with 3 pleats and let me tell you its much harder getting all 3 in, keeping them in place as your trying to sew ---- especially in a hurry. Jen, thank you so much for this wonderful video, IMO the best mask video by far. For my 8 year old, I tried 5x7 fabric and 5" of elastic, and she said it fit perfectly. I sewed with my mom when I was 5 or so, and haven't used a sewing machine in 40 years, so am very inexperienced, and was still able to do this. For any other novices out there, I'd like to share some things that I learned the hard way: 1. I made a 6x9 and 5x7 template out of foam board, to eliminate having to measure each time. My kids can then easily trace on the fabric to help me. 2. I pin the pieces of fabric together before sewing, because when I did not, the pieces moved and I ended up sewing to nothing. 3. I trim overhanding pieces of fabric, because when I did not, I couldn't see the shorter piece if on the bottom, and missed sewing it. 4. After I turn the mask right-side out, I check for places I missed, and fix those - less to fix after implementing nos. 2 & 3 above. 5. I finish sewing all the way around before I make my pleats, because I feel better dealing with only 1 thing at a time. 6. I definitely pinned the pleats, and face needles away from the corners, after poking myself with needles facing the other way. Anyone who is a sewer does not need these tips, but maybe these will help another beginner like me? Thank you again, Jen, for this clear video, I am so proud that I was able to do this! **UPDATE** My kids say the masks are too tight, will try with longer elastic.

I have seen many, many videos. Yours is one of the best! You're very calm and precise yet the explanations/instructions are not hard to understand at all. Love the variety of crafts you have to offer and I am grateful and wish more people were like you for taking the time to give many free projects, which i love and made many as gifts for my family and friends. You are right about the sewing machine, you have to take care of them. My 20 year old machine broke down, i guess i went sew-crazy. (made many masks, over 30 and still going!) so of course i could not do without and searched all over for a new sewing machine. Thought they had become extinct, and some stores took advantage to up the price. Anyway I finally did find one, at a reasonable price and received it right on my birthday, June 10! Didn't mean to write a book here, but you have such a friendly disposition its like we're pals!..kidding.. just wanted you to know I appreciate all you do and enjoy your videos very much. Every pinhole you make through the lining is a space for the virus to enter. The lining is the barrier. Also, about four inches of wire, double craft pipe cleaners, etc should be sewn into a space at the top so it can be pinched around the nose. Put the 'turn opening' at the top and it makes a space for the wire. Sew a 'box' around the wire to hold it in place. T-shirt strips make good ties if you choose to use them. I learn something new every time I watch these videos. Thank you for sharing.

I’ve been following ur channel for a long time. Great mask, awesome easy instructions. Did not know about the flannel, I use the flannel on the side that touches the face as it is softer. I have one observation. In my area, Maryland the hospitals are asking for 9x7.5” to cover the N95, 6” is to short for them. We r making the 6” for personal use and nursing homes. Also, another good tip is to use T-Shits for ties or any knit fabric, it stretched, no need to sew, as they naturally curl w a strong tug. But the ties shown here are more durable for multiple wash. Thank u so much. We all are trying to help. Keep making masks.

Single knit fabric...like is used for T-Shirts...makes great straps! You can buy it by the yard, or use one of your T-Shirts. When you cut a strip 1" wide along the width, it has the same amount of stretch as elastic. Tug on both ends, and it will curl inwardly, making a tunnel of knit fabric, about 1/4" wide. Then, you would sew it on the same way you would the elastic.
