Ive been a tiler now for 15 years and this is exactly the way i do it. Great tutorial for beginers. Tilings not about getting everything in the centre or starting off with a full tile, depends on how your other cuts will look, big rule is to not have thin slithers of cuts, as they look awful and hard to cut. Setting out is one of the most important parts of tiling.
Best video I have seen yet telling you how to tile a window. Liked the tip about making the tiles stick out 2-3 mm to square up walls. I have taken note of that. You are first to talk about doing that. So a big thank you. Excellent video. Will try it out tomorrow. Thanks very much to you and your mate for posting it.
I have watched so many tiling videos on UA-cam and often have more questions than I started with. This is a truly informative how to. Liked and Subscribed
Thankyou! I’ve actually recorded another video on this topic which I think is more concise and has more detail. I’m uploading it tomorrow if you’re interested?
Hi Vikkie, I lay the trim flat to the tile, I don’t space the trim away from the surrounding tiles. However, in the process of tiling the inside you can end up with a natural 1mm joint around the trim which looks great when grouted. Love your channel by the way! 😊
Thanks so much @@lesterbathrooms3948😊 And many thank! I was worried a gap would look ugly (although my grout won't contrast that much!) And your tip on leaving a 2mm-ish overhang on the wall tiles around the window was a very useful tip! I may try to do that around my chimney breast opening!
Thank you Rob, you made me feel brave enough to tackle a small but complicated splashback into window reveal. It's not perfect, but it's done, which it wouldn't have been without your help and wonderful tips!
You make it look so easy! - I tackled my first bathroom tiling today - got half way through in day as it's a lot harder than it looks! 😂 I'm spot-on accurate thanks to your tips. Cheers mate! 👍
Great video....One question though...Why wouldn't you have angled the lower window casing downward toward the shower to allow moisture, condensation or water splashing to seep back into the shower area? thank you,
Great tutorial! I’ve just done a kitchen window with white subway (bevelled) tiles and black metal trim. I made the trim flush with the cut edges and when I grouped it with black brought it looked a mess. I wish I had watched your tutorial first and set the trim 1mm proud of the cut edge. Urgggh! I think I need to remove all the edge tiles and cut new ones and set them on thinner adhesive so that the trim is 1mm proud of the cut edge. Any advice would be welcomed…
Hi great video, very useful! I do have a question though... its about the part before this and above the window. not so bad in your instance but I'm about to tile above my window and there is nothing to stop the tile slipping... do you have any suggestions for this? I've seen people use battens, specialized tools and others saying it shouldn't need anything. i have some 600x300 tiles and don't fancy relying on gravity taking a day off when i try.... cheers
I’ve only tiled up to the edge of my window sill two or three tiles. One is two are sitting proud but one is maybe 1-2mm short. I will do the rest so they are proud and can pack out with adhesive like you said but do you reckon the one that’s fallen short will blend in with grout okay? I don’t want to have to remove it from the wall if I can help it.
I would say if it’s something you will always be bugged by then probably better to replace at this stage whilst you’re still tiling then regret it moving forward and always noticing it. 👍🏻
How come you didn’t centre the grout line to the centre of the window, so the tiles have even cuts either side of window? I am no tiler, just that was told to.
A good question. Doesn’t always work on every job. You can’t just blindly slam the tile in the centre of the window if it doesn’t work out elsewhere. On this occasion you’ll notice that I have a full tile on the left hand side of the wall, If I pulled the courses over to make the tile centre of the window there would be an awful cut of about 1”1/2 - 2” on the left hand side corner. Like I said sometimes you have to make a compromise and on this occasion you have to sacrifice the centralisation of the window as slither cuts in corners is a big no no! Sometimes the size of the window doesn’t suit the size of the tile for centralised setting out, it’s a good rule of thumb but I would advise people to take time to measure out properly as it’s not always possible. Thanks.
Thank you for a very good informative video. Do you let the first layer of adhesive, that you used to fill out the gap, go off before beginning the side tiles? I noticed you used levelling wedges to align the bottom side tile and if the 2-3mm of adhesive is still wet, they wouldn't have anything to push against.
One thing I would of liked is the tiles to be central in the window So tiles sit central if the window is 500mm wide the centre joint or tile is in middle 😁
This is a great rule of thumb but not always possible. You may notice that we have a full tile running from the left hand side, so if I pulled the tiles over by a couple of inches to be centre of the window you would end up with a two inch cut up the left hand side corner of the wall! Not so good!! The tiles not being central to the window is the better sacrifice to make. Hope that makes sense? Rob 👍🏻
Can layout tiles around a window in this way if using glazed tiles. I'm thinking that it can be difficult to get a good edge where the tiles have been cut, and therefore perhaps a different sort of trim should be used?
Fantastic Job and well explained, thank you. I'm just wondering about leaving a grout gap where the tile trim meets at a 45 degree angle. My thinking is than metal on metal isn't a good water seal. I'm doing a window in a shower enclosure so will get wet every time the shower is used. What are your thoughts?
Can you describe what you did with the existing window sill? I'm guessing the window was installed on top of it so you left it in place and tiled on top of it but just wanted to confirm. Thanks!
Hi Joe, yes, the bullnose was chopped off the existing window sill and plasterboard screwed on top to give the correct substrate. If you’re tight for height you could use 6mm hardibacker board. Thanks.
Hi, awesome video, thank you for taking to make it. I am about to finish my bathroom reveals, I have ceramic tiles, they have been cut square and level but are slightly gnarly in places. Should I try to smooth them or will the grout hide it if I leave the trim a mil or two proud?
Hi Stephen, I imagine that you mean the tiles on the outside of the window? Yes, I would bring the trim forward by the smallest margin so it is proud of the cut edge, but only just, and when grouted it will blend. Hope it goes well mate 👍🏻
Hi Rob, great video, really informative, i was waiting for a video like this one, i will be more confident when i do my own now. Do you use a grinder or wet saw to cut the L shapes, around the window, they look really good, smooth and straight. Also do you use a levelling system or just a spirit level, the wall tiles look really flat with no lippage. maybe in another video you can show us how to cut around radiator pipes, cut around a WC, or around a curve, i.e shower tray. Great work mate keep em coming, Kevin ,
Thanks so much Kevin. We use a grinder for the angled cuts (with a mixed - porcelain and ceramic blade) and scribed with our our tile cutter before hand for a clean edge. I’m going to put up videos on this and cutting holes in tiles and different methods for this in our ‘Tiling tutorials’ playlist and many more videos covering the techniques you’ve mentioned. Hope it all goes well buddy! Rob 🙏🏻
Good explanation but have seen on another video where the guy is cutting the wall tiles to overhang by about 9mm and then setting windows trims into the adhesive for them. Your way is how I would do it. Also I see you guys have not used tile levelling systems. On the current project I am using them for the first time because I saw so many reviews making out they were the best thing since sliced bread. But having used them I'm not that impressed. I think they become a hindrance especially when you're having to push a tile well down and adhesive is pushing through the grout lines. It sticks onto the levelling spacers and makes the gaps even bigger and harder to resolve. I work much better just using my eye, a level/straight edge and standard spacers.
Thanks for this. I think different people overhang more (or less) if they’re using different trim profiles or setting the trim in weird ways. I started tiling before these levelling systems were invented. I’ve tried them but can’t get on with them to be honest - they’re a bit misleading I think - they can make a tile flat but not necessarily level, they’re two very different things. I agree with you, just take your time with eye and feel and you can’t go wrong. All the best with the projects bud! Rob.
Be sure to know exact where to stop your tile for the window sill, your thinset under the tile will raise the tile up a tad and you don’t want to big of a grout joint
Make sure you have Connor doing the camera work at all times! You had me dizzy at the start of the video when you were holding the camera yourself 😉 Apart from that, keep up the good work.
Sorry for the poor quality of the video, difficult on site! I’ll try and redo it at some point. Thank you my little custard creams!! ❤

Not sure if you covered this... but do you personally leave a grout gap between the tiles on the wall and the trim?

Fantastic video, excellent teaching
Did you let the first layer of adhesive set after applying the trim? Thx'
Soo I have glossed wood sill and reveals does it need ripping out plasterboard and skimmed before tiling???
Thanks for the vid. Could you tell me what brand that trim is please?
It’s L-Shaped Satin Chrome 10mm from Tile Rite I believe.

Great video. The ones that are surrounding the window with the overhang how much overhang would you suggest thanks.
Depends on how out of level the window is, but I usually allow around 3mm.
How do you stop the tile from falling off the window reveal without using supports?
A really good adhesive contact will hold the tile in place. 👍🏻
Very well put together - many 🙏🏻

I think It would look more nice if u use middle tile in between window so the gap would b straight with trims it would b 3 tiles anyway on that wall
please do more

Looks good but change the fish eye lens on your camera
I dont understand why you have small cut on the back wall doesnt look pro also you suppose to put the window seal unlevel to drain water out of shelf
