😠Bad tile job, only 3 days old and it has to come out.

This bad tile job did not come cheap. Tile and other materials were bought at a big box store, the installation was also arranged and paid for at the box store. The job is a total failure, was not installed according to proper methods, was also an extremely poor finished result with no movement allowed for, exceedingly bad lippage and everything else that could be done wrong, was done wrong.

This doesn't make me feel very confident in my own work because I don't think that tile job looks bad... you can literally pick apart anybody's work if you look close enough. We're not building Swiss watches here, it's a tile floor. Guess I'd have to see it in person... but on camera it looks great. Maybe a case of being too picky? Like I said, it looks good to me.
The tile will crack from no expansion joints, the grout lines can crack from poor sub sheet install, if your lines dont line up and tile dont sit flat, then you screwed a customer. It's ok in your own home as a DIY but never for someone who pays "thousands"!
Follow up coming, floor has been ripped out, much worse than suspected. Difficult to see how bad it is on camera, in person it is horrendous.
Sal definitely works for a different customer base then myself
I dont like the light grout against the dark tile. I had same issue, but I cant afford to have floors fixed again. Some of our tiles are higher than others. I am just gonna apply lots and lots of coats of a floor polish so you dont feel the tile difference
@10:40 they do some close ups and you can see it's pretty substandard
I’ve been a tiler for 30 years and the easiest thing to do is criticise someone’s work…. Ok on close inspection yes you can see issues.
Herringbone takes so long and I’m sure the tiler has worked hard for his money like the homeowner….I’d like to see your effort.
You’ve made such a meal of this and I’d like to inspect your work
ua-cam.com/video/l0DOdk8qkC4/v-deo.html
Dude, I agree with you 100%. The easiest thing to do is pick someone else's work apart. That being said, from the quick glimpse of a couple of the grout joints, and what he was saying about the unevenness, it might not have been a very good job. I don't like to pick other people's work apart, unless it is done painfully bad.
Fix the bad couple tiles. Add toe kick to hide the edges.
Thank you. For any job, you WILL find flaws.
Ecacly. This guy keep talking about contraction space like the house will fall down if you dont do that lol. Been doing tile work for 20 years worked with engineers architects and designers and none of them ever asked me about contraction space when tiling floor. Only on the transition where the wooden floor connects with the tile you need space fro contraction everything else is just BS
I am tiling my kitchen floor & this job looks far superior to mine
Could have been compressed down to 5-minutes!
I know right? The guy tried so hard to finish his story.
Maybe rushing isn’t always best. Hence this video
House is over a million, 5 years old and already having issues. Sounds like the original builders caused the most issues.
I had to change piping on a bath sink for 500k house a decade old.
These national home builders are trash. Pulte is the worst.
@@justtime6736 500k home is just a standard 3 bed 2 bath in a subdivision these days.😒

I don't think it looks that bad. The shiplap looks 100x worse.
Shiplap edges will be covered with door casings , it’s not finished yet , same with baseboards
The grout lines are garbage and an 1/8" lippage is sooo bad especially in 3". It doesn't look that bad it looks like complete garbage
Shit yeah it bad
It's awful in every way possible. Couldn't be much worse unless he dropped the tiles and smashed them to pieces before installing.
Found the installer. Shiplap isnt finished all those gaps will be covered.

Cheap labor ain't Skilled

Cheap, fast, good. Pick two.
THAT STICKER IS ON MY BOX TRUCK....AMEN BROTHER

I think there is so much shoddy tile work that most people don't even know what it's supposed to look like. Its astonishing how many tile setters don't use movement joints.
There was nothing wrong with that tile. This guy just wanted a free floor job. Complain to the big box store and get a refund. What a fraud.
those gout joints are not all the same size and with stone especially the lippage makes it look like crap this tile installer was very obviously an amateur
not the worst tile Job I have ever seen, but I would not say "nothing wrong". Grout lines are horrible. The sealer issue is not a big deal, can always get haze off and reseal. As for movement, tile guys have argued about how much is needed, BUT for a small room like that almost none is needed. So was the tile job perfect? far from it...but it was also not horrible.
Nothing wrong? Lippage and grout lines are critical, and easy to do right the installer is incompetent. Do you accept incompetent work from a mechanic or plumber? I wouldn't. These tile guys don't get trained and their boss never inspects the work, just slap it in and cash the check.
No I went to a big box store too. The contractor they use for flooring was a nightmare. The one guy was obviously high out of his mind and he was the proj. mgr but disappeared for hours leaving the one person to do most of the work. The floor was buckled near the steps and the molding wasn't even attached and he damaged a fixture. They also caused the ceramic tile in my bathroom to loosen when they installed the other floor. I just filed a dispute on my credit card and wouldn't let them return. I tried going thru them and wasn't getting anywhere. They didn't even offer to correct it by sending a different person. Sounds like the same person that did mine.
It’s a bad job! It don’t matter if it’s a $5k home or a multimillion $ House, that was not a proper installation. I would have complained without a doubt!
Someone needs to do something about that bad shiplap job as well.
...the guy has "a million dollah home"...goes to the cheapest source he can deal with and is then surprised he gets a sub par job...the big box stores have been around long enough that a simple Google search can educate you on their subcontractor model...if the homeowner was looking for a top quality job at commensurate prices, he would not have landed at the Walmart of construction...he's not to blame for the bad tile job, he's to blame for expecting more than what he got...
facts i saw it coming off in the middle.
And non of it lined up. Maybe their not done with it.

So called million dollar house yet the work was given to a big box store. U get wat u pay for!
You don’t know what you are talking about do you? Big box stores will give you so much higher estimates than local/private contractor
Looks like a very poor job
@@BlessedFallout home D quoted us 2x the amount that 2 contractors did to install vinyl plank
@@BlessedFallout What does price have to do with it? Big box store jobs are notorious for shoddy workmanship.
The orange box store quoted me $6000 for simple edge quartz 26" x 48" island plus a bay window ledge (trapezoidal shape) of about 5ft by 3ft. They quoted a 6 to 8 weeks lead time for installation. However, after 18 weeks, still no countertops and nothing but excuses from the box store and the contracted vendor. They hadn't even ordered the countertop material, yet they charged my credit card the entire amount of money on the first day that I ordered it. The contract stated that i could not cancel, but I asked them to cancel and fortunately they did, but they kept $1000 of the $6000 that I had paid without providing a reason for withholding the $1000 - calling it "internal information". I really hate that store.
You know you're in the US when almost the first thing to mention is the value of the house.
Sad right
Home Depot is the absolute last place anybody should seek installation services. You’re better off watching some UA-cam videos and doing DIY lol

lol...that would probably be because how home depot hires their installation crews...one company covering states....craftsmen dont work.like that
Crews hired by contractors in the Big Box lot.
Big facts
Unfortinstely a lot of popular tiling videos are promoting incorrect methods... it's the blind leading the blind.
As a tile Mason for over 30 years it did not surprise me to see this from a big box instalation sub I once saw a box store employee tell a customer that the only way to fix a recurring Crack in Saltillo over slab was to keep replacing the tiles as they cracked after the employee left I showed them the products and told them the best way to permanently correct the issue saw that customer a few years later and they approached me and told me thanks for the advice as after they used the correct material and instalation the cracks have never returned
Tighten that belly…No more donuts and beer…You are a great person but your health is suffering…Rock on Sal! Much love tile brother!!
I hope Sal never sees my tile job that I just did in my bathroom 😆
Sounds like you guys would pick any work apart. Floor looks good
You need glasses!! The grout lines suck!! Are uneven!! And are sloppy! …Sloppy work!!
That tile lippage is horrendous. DIY ok, Burger King bathroom ok, but paying thousands of dollars for someone to do this for your house hell no.
Leveling clips are made for using them, especially with natural stone tiles that cost a lot. You don’t want to have to rip up a 15.00 sqft tile and redo it! A little bit of extra time can make all the difference in the world. Shout out to all the tile installers around the world!! No one knows what we got though daily to make a living and most couldn’t hack it, so be proud and take pride in your work🙏🙏🙏
Did my apprenticeship 25 years ago, then got my ticket. There's not a day that goes by I don't curse the line of work I chose. But I take pride in my work, and do the best job I can. The only day that I'm not cursing my decision to do tile for a living, is the day when the job is complete, and the homeowner is happy. That's when I get a sense of satisfaction.
He is cheap, hire a guy for cheap money you get cheap results
i was thinking the same dam thing.
Yeah 😎
The big box store makes it easy, but they charge more because they keep a cut of the money after they contract it out.
Pay basic money and get a basic job
Got exactly what he paid for. That’s the home owners fault.
The triangle works like this. There are three key points: good, fast, and cheap. Your project can be any two of these but never all three.
I actually tell it to my customers, it can’t be cheap, fast, and good.
Speed never goes hand in hand with Good
So it can be good and cheap? I think you have your proverbs wrong
Then I choose good and cheap
Id like to think I'm good and reasonably cheap. My tile work is extremely slow, but I need to make it perfect. I do all around remodel work for kitchens, bathrooms, sometimes do carpentry. So I'm a bit slower, but I get things done right. If I'm not sure about something, I have many older friends specialized in just about every feild, and I consult with them, and sometimes pay them to help if it's my first time doing something new. I'm lucky to have people like that!
Holy f**k get to the point

Looks like a tile crime scene with all those post notes.

@@SalDiBlasi hello Sal. Is there a way i can PM you.
I would love for someone to go behind this guys work and inspect every single millimeter of every single inch of every job he's ever done. I'm sure Sal has never made a mistake! 👍🏾 I'm sure this guy does good work even though I never heard of him. I just hate when people trash other contractors to make themselves look good. Why couldn't he just post a video of him doing good work from scratch to show how it's properly installed. This video just sounds like a Karen to me. You don't need to trash other people's work to make yourself look good. You should just let your good work speak for itself.
Would almost 1000 videos and 62,000,000 views of the work I do cover that. Bad work will never go away if we don't expose it and show how to do it the right way, You want to see how bad it was ua-cam.com/video/l0DOdk8qkC4/v-deo.html I never gave the name of the hack, just pointed out the problems. You should have checked out my channel before posting your comment.
If the owner knew something was wrong, he should have stopped all the work.
It can honestly be hard to tell before the product is actually finished. I had some tiles work done at my place and I realized it was bad after it was completed… the contractor was able to fix but still….
He was at work when the work took place. He stayed home all morning to meet the contractor at 8 and he arrived at 1pm
And then what? You have an agreement on price for the finished job, how will you workout what is owed for the work that's done?
I would like to see you installing and see a finished work of yours to also show you all the details. That job looks great.
Sure ua-cam.com/video/l0DOdk8qkC4/v-deo.html and over a thousand more on my channel
The same guys build the 100K house as well as the million dollar house. Price is immaterial all work should be done in a craftsman like manner. Worked over 50 years in the trades. They did better work in 1920 before power tools. They cut steel and stone by hand and could give lasers a run for their money. Today its get it done as fast as you can. Quality is as rare as hen's teeth. WHY I DO MY OWN. Sal is a master at his trade.
We need more contractors and fewer people with useless liberal arts degrees
@@wholesome122 it’s all these new “contractors” with no experience doing work like this, charging as if they are experienced.
So it doesn’t seem we need more contractors but people with the education enough to know if they are or aren’t worth becoming one.

I did my entire house on my own just from learning from Sal. Great huy! I did two bathrooms, two toiletrooms, kitchen, garage and walkhall. All came out perfect while I was using that knowledge from Sal`s videos.
I have more to do and I hope it will be as smooth as previous jobs.
That is awesome!
My wife and I did our master bath and shower, over 400 sq ft of mostly large format tile on floor and walls. It was our first and only tile job. We used Schluter all the way. I watched lots and lots of Sal’s videos beforehand to learn how and also learned from the tile forum. I could not have done it without what I learned from Sal. It’s all level with no lippage and the grout lines are all the same (leveling clips helped a lot). Thanks Sal!
We are our own best contractors thanks to guys like Sal!
My husband is currently dyi-ing our main bathroom with tiles. He is getting close. I estimate maybe another year an a half!
People have a different set of expectations when they do work themselves, as opposed to having to pay a pro to come in and do it. I've seen jobs that homeowners have done themselves, and been happy with it. I would usually get fired for doing work that looked like that. If you're happy with it, great. A pro might have a different opinion.
Dammm it’s so hard to find a video with the same amount of likes and dislikes!
These kind of critiques are exactly what I'm looking for while installing my own flooring. Thank you for taking the time to post and discuss.
😊👍
Your contractor just saw your comment and quit
I’ve seen 100x worse then this and that was visual, on camera it looks okay until you showed everything.
I agree my shit looked bad he being petty
I tiled my first floor 16yrs ago. Lost 2 tiles to fracture over that time. I tend to learn as I go but this video gave me a couple of good tips. Thanks!
When I see a tile job and it looks perfectly fine and the guy says it's "horrendous," I know it's an important video.
Where I live, it's always the homeowner's or the homeowner's contractor's responsibility to remove the baseboard and thresholds for the tiler. It's actually written into the contract. It's the same with wood floor refinishing.
That's a horrible unprofessional sounding experience. However he bought a $1000000 home and still went to Depot or Lowe's .
If you do not know how they operate, it seems like a perfectly good option, a big company should have the resources to get it done right.
I was a installer for one of the “box stores” They focus on production first, getting paid second, and quality third.
Lol, as soon as I saw the herringbone pattern, I knew it was a trip hazard to walk on
You don’t know what quality an installer is capable of until after it’s already done. References always help. Myself, I fully guarantee all my work to customer’s satisfaction. And I never ask for a dime until job is complete, customer has inspected and approved.
I love that you’re a customer advocate first. I was the same way when I was cleaning and refinishing floors. I never let my customers get burned, not even by The COMPANY I worked for.
Yes! Thank you!
Same here
A house like that in Sydney is a 20 million dollar home
Omg THE SPIDER
Yeah right. Delusional
Everything is expensive in Sydney.

Come to my house in the UK if your ever on vacation, you’ll see a tile floor job that makes that look like it’s been done by the best tiler in the USA.
...wait - are you saying your tile flooring is rough? Or looks niiice?
I'm visiting the uk now. What's your address?
Funnily enough, I'm unlicensed. I do this type of work, and other. (I have to eat too).
"Oh god you're unlicensed, you may have terrible quality!"
Yeah no. In fact I trash the trades far more than burnt customers. Every code is followed, plus more. I cannot tell you, just for example, how many botched electrical work I find, done by licensed electricians, with inspections that were signed off.
It is utterly mind boggling.
So the point I am making here, is that tiler was fucking trash and don't be thinking it was an illegal or unlicensed person.
Whats your trade
A LICENSED TYLE GUY...BAHAHAHA....
I'm the same, unlicensed but I have a well reviewed company, work repeat customers and referrals and average out at $50 - $80 an hour.
Licenses make sense in some applications but mostly it's stupid to me. They have licensed painters, licensed flooring installers etc. Dude just because I don't want to pay and go through a 3-4 year apprenticeship to get a license as a painter doesn't mean that guy with a piece of paper can paint better than me. It's ridiculous
On top of that every union worker has to be licensed. Look at those big jobs, how many of those guys are drug addicts, rough, cant speak to customers, have no idea what they're doing. All those guys are licensed lmfao
I value a well reviewed company or a referral more than I value a license.
Only thing is I probably wouldn't hire an unlicensed guy to replace an electrical panel, or run gas lines etc. Certain areas I would prefer a licensed guy + good reviews
why didn't he just hire you in the first place. sounds like you gave him tips before they started..
Job was already contracted and paid for before he ever met me. There was no way he could know what the outcome would be. He is not at fault here, the box store is.

Don't trust anyone when money is concerned, no one !!! As for expansion always take base boards off and install new base boards then you don't have a big grout line around the bottom of your base board.

Great camera work, now I have vertigo. Tell the next guy to use tile levelers that you break off the next day after the tiles are installed.
Your knowledge is great Sal. Sometimes it seems like you drag these videos out, making it hard to get through. No ill intent by my comment. Just something I've noticed.
Got it
This is great information. Super nice of this tile expert to help the homeowner know exactly what should have been done. Craftsmanship is a diminishing form. Anyone with pride in their work and a desire for their work to still be in place for many, many years will learn the craft to the level of detail this gentlemen knows. Super nice of him to mark and leave the book for reference.
After hundreds of years, tile work and detailed Mosaics are still in place because the Tilesetters were true craftspeople.
Well, it looks to me like an ok job. He ran the tile to the baseboards because the owners told him they were installing shiplap. If the person installing the shiplap does it correctly then they'd pull the baseboards and adjust. Looks more like bad planning of projects like electrical before plumbing.
I can't believe that many people liked your comment. Actually, there are a lot of hacks out there, so I can believe it.
I agree with you on that
What did this guy expect contracting through home depot or Lowes? It's like booking a tour excursion through a cruise ship company and then wondering why your getting a substandard tour for a high price.
Here are your answers. ua-cam.com/video/UXvpHTyMFB4/v-deo.html
Homeowner will get a full refund...the big stores take a portion of the installers wages each job and set it aside for such incidents....the guys that typically install for the big stores are guys who cant get work anywhere else
People "if ya cant run with the big dogs stay on the porch" ( unknown)
Big Box Stores= No Standards
The problem is, that if they’re rectified tiles, and the surface is uneven with deep grout gaps, they will crack as soon as you slide any furniture on the surface. It is very good to keep contractors up to your higher standard. I had to give up on the initial contractor because of that. The weird part is that they were the ones to recommend these tiles in my case, which you shouldn’t do unless you are absolutely confident you can pull it off with your skill
I had a similar experience with the blue box store. In fact I am in the middle of negotiating the resolution now. One year ago I had 950 sf of porcelain tile installed over concrete. The box store's installation company sub-contracted it out to an independent tile installer. He was late starting the job (1st bad feeling). Then he "took a couple days off." Then he brought his girlfriend into my house so that he had "company" while he worked. Even after I kicked her out, he kept bringing her back. It was a bad combination of inattention to the job and incompetence. Within a few months several tiles broke from being stepped on. Grout began popping up. It has taken four months for the box store to even admit that it was an installation problem - they blamed it on me for dropping something on the tiles. Now they want to bring back the same incompetent contractor to fix it. It won't go well. LESSON? Never use one of the big box stores to contract to do anything. An irony is that I have done tiling myself but am too old now to do a job this big.
Here is another little trick they pull; The big box store sends the contractor they pull a permit show it to the homeowner everybody feels good. The catch? They never call for inspection the owner doesn't know the difference. Went behind Lowe's here in CA. What a mess...
I am so glad that I watched a ton of your videos before I had my shower done. I hired a guy who said he had been doing tile for 35 years, but he had never used Schluter shower kit, and never installed large glass tile in a shower. I showed him your videos, and micro managed him (he didn't want to back butter the tiles, but I insisted), he hated me by the end, but I am glad I did it otherwise I would have had big problems. Thank you so much Sal! Two years later my glass tile shower is doing great!
Knowledge is power
Watch a view videos and now your an expert. Here's a thought 🤔why didn't you do it yourself. As your clearly know more the the tiler
My son is laying our marble tile floor. He is fastidious. He used to build steel containers that had to be within 1/8 of an inch tolerance over a 30 FOOT span. The inherent differences in natural stone are driving his OCD crazy. On a positive note, hopefully it turns out great!
The contractor who did our small bathroom reno announced to us, "I love doing tile!" That implied that he was good at it, which he definitely wasn't. Sometimes I think the only owners who are getting super-talented contractors are on This Old House.
Sal the moral of the story is, you get what you pay for. The owner went cheap and he got cheap. I don't feel sorry for him at all. And like you said Sal, "This is not a cheap neighborhood where cheap work would fly." Too bad the man's house is in the wrong neighborhood. For that price I would have put tile over the old tile.
That is actually not true, he paid a good amount of money $2,500 for less than 80 square feet is not cheap. He definitely did not get what he paid for. The guy installing the tile was probably paid cheap money, but that is not the homeowners fault, that is what happens when you have a bunch of middle men taking a cut. No money left to do it right.
@Sergey Romanchenko Plenty of good installers that do great work.

@@SalDiBlasi 100%
@@SalDiBlasi it looked like more than 80 sq. ft. and it might be $2500 for just the labor? I took it included the tile also. Did the contract say to pull up the concrete board? I respect you Sal and have been watching your videos for years.
It’s absolutely insane how much of this we see here on the east coast of Canada, because stores weather it’s big box or furniture stores selling and supply materials and installers , the amount of jobs we fix is crazy over the last few years, you know it’s bad when these stores take a % of the job from the installation crews to put in a fix it fund..... it’s shameful how much the trade is suffering right now .
Many tile setters are part of the problem.
Good example of a home owner not knowing the Professional that's doing his Bathroom(Sal) thinking a tile is a tiler. As a Licensed Contractor I heard the part that he did demo on another project. If not in the Field please leave it to the Pros ! Good luck Sal
Thanks again for the tips. Unreal they went over the old surface, as you point out no idea how it was installed
"LETS DO THIS"......its funny homeowners do BIG remodels and splurge on the granite counter tops with beautiful cabinets, nice hardwood ,fresh new paint, but when it comes to the "TILE" why are we the ones to try and shave our prices to keep down the budget. 😳 what people don't understand is a tile man that cares about the trade doesn't just bang it in but at times we are there for days if not weeks trying to give them a flawless job. And it can be done . "skilled labor isn't cheap"cheap labor isn't skilled"( landburg) 👌 sal u keep the nice custom tile video's coming👍
I never cut my price. I get paid what the job is worth and what my skill is worth. Tile contractors are complicit in the prices they ask for.
Tommy that so true 👍
@@LandbergTileTV Thanks Jessie.

Good info, just don't watch in headphones, your ears will hurt!
I appreciate the extended unpolished commentary/discussion.. thanks
A lot of installers don't realize that just because you put down 2 layers of ply to try to stiffen the floor for a stone install, it's not the correct way. You must inrease the stiffness of the floor joists underneath. Sistering, decrease joist spacing, etc. TCNA is very specific on subfloor loads. Especially on stone.
Correct, joist structure and floor assembly must meet L/720, which includes joist deflection and deflection between the joist. However if you read the TCNA Handbook on this subject you will find it is not the job of the tile installer to determine suitability of the floor for any kind of tile. That goes to the builder, architect, engineer. or design professional.
Great info Sal. Regardless if installing yourself or hiring someone you need to educate yourself on materials, installation methods, and the TCNA requirements. It's alll in the details for a solid tile installation!
You are correct
Agree with most of this but lost me at natural stone needs 2 layers of subfloor. We always take it down to subfloor and lathe and mortar subfloor to make a nice flat and solid surface to lay our tile on.
I'm learning tilling. I apprecciate all that info
When i do floor jobs/estimates, old baseboards are always removed... Many contractor care most about the money--no pride in their workmanship (darn, just realized I'm signed in with wife's acct, again).
I subbed for the blue big box store for about 5 or 6 years. I spent 30 to 40% of that ripping out other subs work and redoing it. Tile was the worst offender. I actually had to argue with the store to allow me to use ditra over a slab as they did not want to pony up for it.
These companies sell a big game but as a veteran of working in their system it's all lies. All they care about is making as much money as possible. I had it at 5 years. You do make money but you cant grow your company adequately outside of their system because the mistakes cost so much time its bewildering.
I worked for the orange big box store for around 4 years, lemme tell ya, it ain't much better on our end. I can't tell you how often i would just hand them our sub contractor's card and tell them to go directly through them instead of dealing with all the red tape we slapped on everything.
Where can someone get that book? Thanks
He must've hired the guy standing outside hom de pot. 😂😂😂
You ever use geotextile cloth on top of your subfloor, try it, its perfect for two story houses. You glue down the cloth, wait for it to dry, then just tile right over. Game changer, we used this in central America do to earth quakes. Works great.
The last 4 minutes of the vid was all we needed 🤦♂️
I installed blinds and curtains for an outfit that subcontracts for Home Depot. I subcontracted for them. There is no accountability at all. Clients regularly waited months for repair work and I was coached to do crappy work. I quit after three months.
Never hire box store installation companies in your home!
Seems to be very good advice and a common theme.
Peter K Stupedro Couldn’t agree more ! Customers are paying a 20% sure charge of whatever the subcontractor quotes the job at.
It’s overpriced insurance for shit work.
Didn’t know Peter
Griffin worked in carpentry
Experience is the best teacher and i'm no stranger to these mistakes from my early years before I was familiar with proper methods of using shims, metal lathe, etc.. Thanks for your comments.
So the big box guy installed a floating floor with "super non-slip" lippage and variable grout lines. And they didn't charge you extra?!!! :)
Exactly!! if you look at it that way, the job was top notch.
Then in that case. I recommend drilling holes for water drainage 😁👍
the lippage I can understand if the person is inexperienced and it sounded like their foundation was questionable to begin with - but the grout widths were confusing they seemed all over the place
Not cutting the bottom of the doorjambs and slipping the tile under drives me crazy, I use my Fein multi-tool to cut it, it might take an extra bit of time but it saves a boat load of time trying to cut the tile to fit and anytime you put grout up against wood it always cracks out. When its cut around the jamb its always a sign of inexperience or straight up laziness.
ua-cam.com/video/Idrxqc5xf6Q/v-deo.html
Always go under the Jam, or any other trim that will not receive some molding.
@saldiblasi, how do you know what size spacer to use when tiling?
ua-cam.com/video/1CGgMTJsqGI/v-deo.html
for a herringbone pattern on top of having to tear up the existing subfloor, $2500 is about 50% of what the job should have been, and the quality reflects that price.
The biggest problem is the horendes layout and color choices...makes no sense
And that’s all we are getting with production builders. Even on 500k houses. It’s ridiculous.
I had to come to this video just because of the thumbnail. Genius 👌
Sometime tile sizes slightly different even come in the same box, so grout line might be little larger. Cheap tile from big box store have lots of this problem.
Even the shiplap has random gap sizes where it meets the door trim
I kept staring at that shit too!!
@@thebruhhh Hoping there is a casing going over it....
They are still working on it. Progress has been halted to replace the floor.
Homedepot projects were some of my first tile projects. They didn’t pay well. There were many issues. First off with 4 different companies being involved in simple projects the dumbest things go wrong and it is up to you as the tile/laminate floor installer to do everyone else’s job including calming down the customer and doing customer service. There is Home Depot, the measure company, the big contracting company that gets all the projects from homedepot (they hire the subs, set dates, deal with customer service and so on), and then there is you the sub contractor. You are the only small business and they try to stick you with the bill of unsatisfied customers in anyway they can because they treat home improvement like cookie cutter business. They try to undercut the market and set low prices so by the time the money gets to u it’s very little. So imagine what kind of quality worker will stick around to do this work. After getting good I spent most my time redoing projects after other installers who just botched them either they were new or this is a side thing for them. The homedepot employees recommended things that couldn’t be used in certain aspects, or didn’t order the right stuff and if you were lucky I would waste time making a store run if it was in stock. If u weren’t ur material would be in at 2weeks and we would be back in a month. Doesnt sound good when ur original project date was already changed 3 times and what was supposed to happen in a couple of weeks is now 6months later. It’s hard for the customer not to through out his frustration on you when ur the only one there and you have to remind him you are not Home Depot but ur own company so they should be mad at them. Home Depot will also do a terrible job to inform you that most likely unforeseen extra work will come up most likely and u should be financially prepared. Because if I charge $300 to do leveling homedepot and the hiring contractor have no mercy and ur leveling cost is $650. So now ur inexpensive project that was 20 percent below market value is a mess and u lose tons of money and vacation days and sanity after all the extra fees u are 30 percent above average. If ur the sub and the customer complains about something that homedepot agreed to do but never put in ur order they and the contractor will try to make u take the hit or at least half of what they had to pay the customer to make them happy even if it is completely there fault. The worst part is by the time ur arguing with the charge backs and have solid facts and a clear understanding between the parties that ur not at fault management has changed and now new mangment of those departments doesn’t know what ur talking about and will say “well I wasn’t the one dealing with it, or I wasn’t at the site visit so I don’t know...” if they haven’t changed and they say “ we can’t take a $3000 hit so how about u take a $1500 hit but we will get u extra on next projects to return it to u and get u good big easy projects for the next 6 months” I agree and management changes a couple months later and now the new guys owe u nothing. After all this info anyone should understand that only an inexperienced novice or a loser with no ability to do quality work will work with these companies... if ur lucky when U get work done You will get newbies with lots of talent and potential that might wing it and get it right or don’t know their worth yet. Hope this info helps consumers and this looking for work to Avoid Home Depot
Thanks for that, pretty much what I thought.
HI! Is there a hand book for lvp all laminate snap and lock tile installation i can reference and learn more from? Thank you!
Lol this video was funny, I didn't want to watch any more after 1 minute but mustard to complete it lol can't believe the client agreed to do this, also I wondered if the guy who installed this floor got a copied link of this video to his phone lol
I think the problem is your lack of communication we can all see that here on this video
The home owner wanna paid cheap so what he expected
Good work Sal. Do you recommend the square notch or U shaped notch for 12 x 12 porcelain wall tiles? Thank you
square 🙃
Couple employees at a big box store told me they’ve been using ready mixed mortar over Red Guard for years…. Not only does it say on the Red Guard container NOT to use ready mix mortar but even the ready mixed containers say “Do not use this product over Red Guard.” Obviously, I trusted nothing they said to me after that.
Exactly why when a customer has a special request I tell them NO !!!
As an installer there’s only 1 way to do the job !
I understand that there are hacks out there but I also understand the other side of things
Here's the problem, there are need too knows. Maybe 150 sq? So sound like pricing maybe in line have to assume. Box store makes 35-45% margin, contracting company makes 35-45%. How much meat do you think is on the bone for the sub? There is a $15-18 a square job plus the extra for substrate which is unknown. When it got to the sub it was about $3.50. He looked for every short cut to put money in his pocket maybe 15-20%. The end of the day was saying how good a job he did. I run plenty off just like him. I just had a house flipper tell me 1/3 pattern 9x24 I was double at $9 all straight single room easy easy. Leveling system. I told him got luck!! Guarantee his sub didn't have insurance and working under general floor contractors credentials. Probably didn't pay taxes either. That job is good enough tio pass the one year then fall apart on customer. Then they call quality guy and job cost was double what they pay me to fix from original. Actually do good business on box store rework. Or customer got burned and said no more.
No matter what the cut is for the different parties. the homeowner should not have to have this kind of work done and have to accept it. The box stores offer installation because it is a money maker, they probably know that most people won't complain about the work done, most don't even know that they got screwed.
@@SalDiBlasi can you do a video on pricing for a job.

@@SalDiBlasi so split on as I eluded too I do work for people and they point out what box store did. I am door you settle and they stop it's not worth the fight. Where it irritates me is it now puts abrasion between contractor and customer. Like you I imagine sell on knowledge, skill and educate my customer. I said many times if your other bids deviate from these specifications they are short selling you quality or they don't have the skill set to deliver the job quality. Build to code says I am willing to do the minimum. I should have mentioned I worked as w2 employee for a decent general contractor that did box store jobs. I know the inside. Get it done and fast boo money to quibble over details. When they call and complain that's when you fix it.
@@SalDiBlasi last one I promise! That is why mtg compliment to you is frequently thank you for making the business better
Never mind the tile now!!! When you showed the ceiling repair, I can see all the joints and knife lines. If you have a smooth ceiling or wall, it needs to be level 5 finished before sealing and painting. I can see the difference from the board to the mud, in just the few seconds you showed it.
Are they going on blast next?
Sal knows tile but I thought Boston was the home of a major marathon? Must be busy setting tile? Anyone else catch the smile on the cust face when Sal said he works hard for his money? That man has killed.
