Should we keep the old door or get a new one?
is the old door original? if it is but it's in really bad shape, make it into something else, a work of art or a table or whatever.
We think it’s from the mid 1960’s . Derrick needs to change the weather stripping and repair a few little spots in the wood but it’s not so horrible
I'd just like to say that it's wonderful to see that you bought an abandoned house like this and actually intend to restore it, I've always throught it's such a shame how we abandone so much history in so many places and just let them fall apart so I'm really glad to see people like you 2 moving to such a place and seeing an opportunity in it and not just deciding to tear the whole thing down.
Really looking forward to see the coming episodes!
Exactly! It’s such a shame to see old houses just to go waste. There is so much character in them. And a lot of potential.
One of our neighbors asked if we were going to tear the house down 😳 NEVER!!
It might even be more work to fix it all up than build a new house, but the end result will he totally worth it!
I subscribed after I saw how careful you took care of the trees!
My kind of people. Thank you.
All life is precious 🌳🙂
@@Projectsweden Yes! Greetings from Alaska.
ya'll vibing
Thanks! It’s been quite the adventure so far 🤠
Ep 2 was fantastic as well! Its really nice to follow you guys work with the house, I have a feeling it will be amazing in the end! Cant wait for ep 3 to drop! 😀
Thank you so much for your kind words 🤗
thats a nice wall paper! the flower one on the wood
Thank you :) It is hard to imagine it is 100 years old!
Welcome to Sweden 👍
Thank you very much!
Hi. lichens on trees, and on your birch - IS NOT A SIGN OF SICKNESS by or on the birch tree. Actually the opposite, on the contrary it is a sign of a prosperous biotope with good air quality. The lichen has no roots and does not affect the substrate it grows on, for example on birch trees and trees, the lichen is stuck to the outermost layer of bark and does not damage the tree in any way. When lichens grow above all where the air is clean, lichens are sensitive to air pollution. So consider it a plus to have clean air around you. The North of Sweden lichens is very very important for the the reindeer, and I don’t mean that you should feed the the reindeer - though by letting the lichens have its purpose for the tree, birds the spors in the wind makes more lichens.
Thank you! We didn’t actually know this. Good to see signs that the air is clean then 😄
Thank you for the information the specific tree has a lot of rot I did quite a bit more trimming before winter and it needs to be topped in the spring hopefully we can get it back healthy this year and don’t worry all the lichens are still there 😊
@@Derrickkr
The alleged rotten dead parts of the birch tree, these I can’t speak for when I don’t know anything about that. My answer was born from hearing you Derrick in the video say something like “when some sun can get here, then this moss-shit can die” - that sentence told me that you didn’t have knowledge about the symbiotic life of the lichens and trees. Plus Mimi is telling the audience of the video, that birch in the spring can bleed out if you cut into the living parts of the birch in the spring - and the video is in the spring, plus you are telling Mimi and the audience of the video when you cuts into living parts of the birch. So therefore I knew that you both hadn’t much or any knowledge about birch trees, the importance of lichens - so therefore I wrote an answer to the story in this video. This answer is not meant as an angry answer, just “speaking” by the order of the happenings in the video 😅
@@withsuuuz we did trim them in the spring and yes they did bleed a bit and as I said thank you for the information.. we don’t have many birch trees or clean air where I’m from so I am genuinely thanking you for that. As I said that specific tree has some other issues but hopefully the rot clears up with some more care..
@@Derrickkryes I noticed that you thanked me 🥹 even though, to get thanks for a comment was not my goal, my goal was more like hoping to spread some bit of knowledge and hope that you will find interest in learning more about The North of Sweden (I’m born in Luleå, have lived in Kalix but lives south of Stockholm) Unfortunately there are more of the Swedish people that doesn’t have a clue about the importance of our nature, then the opposite. 🥺 I’m not the owner of our nature, the nature is letting us into the it’s oasis 😅😊
Welcome to Sweden! :)
Thank you very much!
I only stumbled across your channel today 28 February. I think you are very brave buying and restoring a house in Sweden when you hadnt visited Sweden before then. What made you decide to live in Sweden?
When you get your woodburning stoves, you can peel bark off the birch trees and use it as kindling.
I am looking forward to seeing your renovations.
Hi Denise, thank you for your kind words. We wanted to move to Sweden because we love nature. Here we can be right by the woods and the river, own a house with a garden, and not be stuck in traffic ever again (unless a moose crosses the road 😂). Apart from that, free healthcare, & education. Many more reasons which are hard to explain in a single comment. Keep watching and you will come to understand 😊
Välkommen:) Norrland is the best.
I completely agree! 🤩
I'm hooked, I love seeing houses being renovated and you seem like a lovely couple. I am just catching up on your videos, 🤩
I am glad to hear you are enjoying our videos! There will be many more to come 😊👌
Love watching old houses brought back to life and turned into a lovely homex
Hi Elaine, it’s such a pity to see them sitting empty and just slowly going to waste, isn’t it? This house needs quite a bit of love but we are going to make it better than it ever was before 😊🙌🏻
Välkommen till Sverige 🇸🇪 ❤
Tack så jättemycket 🙌🏻😊
I love seeing old houses getting love! And the area around Tornedalen is beautiful! The stuff that insulated the window is not lambswool it is lindrev, it is still used in log houses. But usually mineral wool is used nowadays. Lambswool would not work, it would be eaten by moths.
Hi and thank you! We heard about Tornedalen and how beautiful it is. Unfortunately we havent had much time to explore yet but that will change :)
Linnon/lin is better than artificial materials.
HEATING --------- Ive got underground heating for the whole house. Its a rod which (in my case) drops down 80m to granite stone and feeds the boiler which runs less on electricity. Prices up here heve been so expensive so beware. As for the vent you see around the house in rooms its an old device for warm air to circulate .
Yeah we noticed that’s a pretty common system nowadays. We will do waterborne floor heating to keep our house warm. First we are fixing the inspection though. That should already make a lot of difference with keeping the heat in next winter
When you are renovating PLEASE watch out if you plan to do the insolation by yourselfs, many of these old houses have a ton of aspestos if they have not done any reno there might be aspestos in the walls and roof.
Hi! Thank you for your concern. Derrick owned his own renovation company in Texas before he moved to Europe, so luckily he’s dealt with asbestos many times before. We know how to recognize it and we’ll deal with it professionally :) luckily there’s not much asbestos in our house :)
Welcome to Sweden!
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this and warmly welcome to Sweden.
Thank you very much! 😄
Hugs from Texas. Love watching your adventure.
Glad you like them!
Congratulations on your new home 🏡, can't wait to see the renovations. 😊
Thank you very much!
great video. Welcome to Sweden 🙂😀
Thank you for your kind words 🤗
I looking forward to follow you guys ! Redo the house and all! :) From sweden to, Umeå Kind of north ! :)
Hi Linus, I am glad to hear that you enjoyed our video! Episode 3 should be up sometime next week. I think Umeå definitely counts as north! :)
Welcome to Sverige 😊😊
Thanks!
How exciting, there’s a lot of work to be done! I look forward to following you through to the full renovation is done.❤
Hi and thank you so much for your kind words 😊 I am glad you have enjoyed our videos so far. More will follow soon!
Welcome to Sweden! I'm subscribed and tagging along for the ride!
Awesome! Thanks for the comment, it’ll be a wild ride for sure 👌
Love your very thorough yard clean-up and the trimming of the beautiful birch trees. Personally, I would like to see you restore the original front door. It adds a nice touch to the front porch and looks quite unique. The original wallpaper you found upstairs looks something like a early William Morris pattern. Goggle early English wallpaper. Quite interesting.
Thanks! I haven’t heard of the Morris pattern, but I will look it up :)
Welcome to sweden
Thank you very much!
Liebe Mimi,
up here is still winter in north
Yes there is snow until the end of May. Ep 2 was filmed right after the snow left :)
I live in the southern parts of Sweden and you know what? As a child the winters are so great and you spend all day outside having fun! The problem is you get older you spend less outside having fun in the snow so you get tired of the darkness and snow.
My tip is to overcome this is to have som fun activity outside in the snow, such as distance skiiing or going to a local rally tournament so you just don't sit inside looking at the darkness and neverending snow😂
And even though you're both adults a fun activity is to build snowmen or igloos whatever it may be! It isn'tjust for kids to play in the snow!😊
Hi John, you’re absolutely right! It’s important to have fun 😄
I nearly had a heart attack when he pulled at the radiators - those are filled with water, they're not electric! What you just damaged pulling at the radiator was a heating system that was most likely self circulating so you could have heated the house with no electricity if it was connected to a tile oven or a cast iron stove... They are very good systems that would have been better to keep, I think it's a mistake to not keep it. And the house is most likely made of really sturdy wood and considering how thick the walls are it's definitely insulated. Even an insulated building in Sweden needs a heating system since the winters get cold.
It would have been great if that system still worked, but all the pipes were not only broken, most of them rusted away. There was no water left in them. The house had been sitting abandoned for at least 12 years. That system was far beyond saving. We will be installing floor heating later on
Enjoying your journey from ontario canada. One suggestion number your videos. Go back to the beginning and label. I rec
commend this because we are more likely subscribe if we can keep track of your journey.
Hi Karen, do you mean number the titels? I was planning to do that later on, but i can go ahead and number them now if it helps 😊
Hello, looking forward for your journey and watching your house become a home, God bless and take care.❤️🇨🇦
Thank you very much for your kind words 💕 the next episode should be out in a week or two 😊

Hi guys!! Great video!! Your yard is looking better!! Love the silver birch trees!! I think your house & yard is just beautiful & will definitely come to life with some time & attention!! Take care 😊❤
Hi Tammy, thank you so much for your kind words! Yes it needs lots of tome and attention but it will all be more than worth it in the end 😊🙌🏻
Hello, Mimi when is your number 3 video coming out?❤️🇨🇦
Hi! Episode 3 is already out, we are working on replacing all the windows there. You can watch it here:

We need more videos. How is you adventure going?
Haha I know! I am working hard on editing the next one 🙌🏻😁 it will be finished hopefully sometime next week.

Maybe frame the wall paper as an art form?
Yes thats exactly whist we planned!
Hi Mimi, I love to see this new video, One question, how do you manage with the language? Good Luck and Congrats on your house.
Hi Karem, I actually speak 4 different languages. I think Swedish has many similarities with English Dutch and German so learning went fairly quick
Wuaw I live in the Netherlands and I don't speak Dutch yet, I'm working on that. @@Projectsweden
Keep practicing, I can recommend Duolingo. That’s how I started learning Swedish. After 3 months of only duolingo I could already understand 80% of the language :)
So these videos were recorded last year? Nice work on the garden
Yes i wanted to film quite a bit first so I could go through it a little faster :)
We purchased the house march 2022. And we moved here last summer.
@@Projectsweden I see. New video every two weeks?
Yes I try posting every other week :)
👍👍👍
🙌🏻
I see you have a bus stop near the house, bus might be good for you Mimi to go to the hospital.
Yes we are very lucky to have it! The busses didn’t go often previously (like twice a day) but since last year they changed their schedule so now they go every hour :)
Hi
Amazing house but a long way to get it all squared up.
How did you pay for the house? I've heard it is hard to pay for a house over there if you live abroad? We plan the move from UK to Sweden so trying to find out how it worked for you.
Thanks
Hi michal, yes we have long ways to go but we will enjoy the journey!
So, we purchased the house through a bank transaction. You can’t get a swedish mortgage if you don’t live in sweden. The good news is that the houses are really cheap here (especially in the north). We ended up paying around 150.000 sek, which is about 11.000 pounds with today’s exchange rates. There was quite a bit of paperwork involved in the move but genuinely not too difficult since I am an EU citizen.
I’m sure brexit complicated things in your case though. Make sure to do your research :)
Massive thanks for a quick reply.
We are Polish so things will not be this hard and we don't need a mortgage but I have watch a lot of other foreign people moving to Sweden and they all said payment was an issue... Still got a few months till we travel there to see the place and then make a final decision 😊 but watching you and others that did that move and looks like a great place to live in peace with nature all around.
Oh that definitely will make things easier! So as you can see in our videos we went here, made an offer. Then waited a bit for the previous owners to sign the papers and then we made the bank transfer, signed our papers and that’s it. That was one of the easier parts of the move really. The only little harder thing was getting an insurance on the house without a personal number. But after a few calls the realtor actually helped us with that.
Doing a weekly video will help u on subscribers and the algorithm 😊
Hi Michele. Yes I know. :) Unfortunately one video takes about 50 hours to edit and with my fulltime job i don’t have enough time to do one a week. I’ll invest in some better cameras and microphones as soon as the channel starts making some money. That should hopefully fasten up the editing process 😊
❤🎉
💕
Ehhhh.... Why are you destroying the heating system? Those old thick iron type usually last "for ever".
Are you going to exchange all radiators and piping?
It will cost you more than you paid for the house if you not do the whole job yourself.
Hi Fortune, the house has been sitting abandoned for many many years, the pipes where already broken and even rusted closed. They were beyond fixing. So yes we will be changing out the entire system. Derrick is going to be installing water based floor heating. And yes we will be doing 95% of everything ourselves :)
I was a Krause before my marriage.
Nice! It’s quite a common name i think. From german origin
Why does a couple living in one of the best and most beautiful countries on earth wants to settle in Sweden! Not that Sweden is not beautiful or good!
Hi Nicole, That is exactly what you will come to learn if you keep following our journey 😉 I agree with Switzerland being one of the most beautiful countries on the planet though!
I never quite understand the randomness of these do-it-yourself renovations? Would you not start with plumbing, electrics, and heating? Insulation if you want to spend more than summers in Sweden--floors, walls, ceilings. Securing doors and windows. The roof? BEFORE making interior decorating improvements? Just saying.
Hi, yes we started with the electrics, plumbing is up next. Heating and Insulation after (after tear outs). Where did you get the interior decorations from? We are long ways out from that. :)
@@Projectsweden An interesting project.
Rule number 1 If you are not sure about something or don't know, ask first and then do it.
Renewing the insulation is one of the most important stages of renovation in the nordic countries, winters can be harsh, so do it well and with care and ask the Swedish experts what they recommend.
The first winter tells how well the insulation worked.
We will be using mineralwool and addressing thermal bridging properly
