I am Swedish 🇸🇪 and find these videos so positive. People like you and your partner should be given a medal for all the work you put in and your willingness to adapt to the local community and culture - getting that hunting license is so important. Many people think living in the country is about independence and not having to rely on others when it is in fact the opposite, both for practical and social reasons you will be more dependent on neighbors. If/when you have children that will be an important anchor. You should definitely keep the wood stove no matter what. Also look into getting at least a rudimentary wood splitter, so you don’t need to do it with an axe, which will wear you out rather quickly.
Impressive undertaking, with a steep learning curve! We bought a similar homestead 12 years ago and we know the struggle, although we are Swedish, born and raised in Värmland. 😊 I don't want to be a besserwisser, but there is an old saying here in Sweden about firewood that really has logic to it: One fells the trees in winter (the ground is solid frozen and hard, thus avoiding damaging the land), process them into firewood so they are ready by Easter, and then they dry (outside, in piles) and are ready by midsummer. Then one moves the firewood to dry storage in a woodshed (with good ventilation). There are a lot of reasons to this, humidity in the logs and in the air being important factors. Splitting wet wood is preferable and logs from birch will rot really fast if one doesn't split them open the same season. After midsummer the air gets humid and firewood won't dry up in time for winter. Too dry (old) firewood is also not the best. There's a whole science to this really! In the beginning there is so much to learn and too little time, but we learned the hard way that processing firewood like this is the best. Regards from another homesteader 😊

Oh, I'm Swedish but I'm impressed by you! Just an advise! Buy an Air Heat Pump. For your house you can get one for 30.000 with installation. That will lower your heating costs by 2/3. It adjusts automatically, so when you have the fire burning, it will turn off, and then go on again at whatever temp you want. In the summer you can use it as air-conditioning. Also, in the long run, better insulation and better windows/doors lower your heating costs. Just some advice from a "Nordbo"! Much luck in the future! 👍
Hi thanks for the advice! We have a heat pump in the kitchen but since that's exactly where the fire is, we don't use it that often. Also, it doesn't heat up the rest of the house very well. It's not connected to the radiators or anything so it's OK for downstairs but not for the entire house. We mainly use it for AC in the summer now. To be honest, the electrical heating is not that bad. We have it connected to a smart home system with connected smart thermometers in every room. This way it also only turns on when needed and together with the "vattenmantlad kökspanna" the electric bill isn't too scary.
Top man. By far the best of all of the 'I moved to the Swedish wilderness' videos I get fed. This guy actually has his head on straight and is doing stuff right and spending right rather than the drifting around in cosplay uniforms to tinkly piano music, sounding vacant and depressed, and moaning about the rot filled, freezing hell hole they'd bought that other videos are filled with. He will do well. Excepting, of course, the fact that he bought a place in Sweden rather than somewhere livable for humans for more than 4 months of the year. Which clearly marks him out as completely out of his mind.
Nieuwe subscriber 😁
You do as you like with your plot but I was surprised you planted trees in the old meadows. That old "kulturlandskap" is on the down, and trees are at an all time high basically. More and more old pastures are lost to more "economic" forestry. Pollinating insects need meadows. The most herbs grow on fields that are grazed and not fertilized, or harvests of hay were taken once a year. This will let lower flowers grow and bloom and not just tall grass. Let a farmer harvest hay or do it yourself to keep the old farming landscape.
You have a good point and since planting those trees I did change my mind. I wouldn't mind some more shading and shelter near the stream but I don't plan on planting any more trees in the meadows, apart from some fruit trees in one small part on the other side of the road.
You will do good, your priorities seem sound and you seem to embrace your new culture. Have you looked into mounting a detachable plow to the Amarok? Allt gott och lycka till!
@@kpetterss hej! I have thought about it and looked into it briefly but I couldn't find anything that made sense or was readily available. I do think that if I stay on top of it and not let the snow pile up too much, the quad should be able to handle it. Especially if I mount a higher plow, but we'll see in a few months 😁
Interesting look into your Swedish life. I certainly wouldn't mind more videos in English (or Swedish!), so I'm subbing in hopes of that :D Lycka till!

I'd suggest buying a sand spreader so you don't have to sand the driveway with a shovel. They can get a bit expensive but it's worth it since you'll end up using a lot less sand and you can use it with your ATV.
We have to prioritise large expenses and a sand spreader didn't make the list. It would be very good for leveling the lawn as well so who knows, maybe next year...
A regular rotary fertilizer spreader for lawns may work too and is much cheaper. And you can fertilize the lawn close to the house so it gets thick and soft as a bonus 🙂
The wood should just dry out for one season, or even just a half year. The wood should NOT be to dry. Having the wood to dry makes it burn out to fast, and the energy doesnt get used as effeciently.
If you collect the chainsaw saw dust and get a wood pellet machine...you could make your own pellets and a adapter for your wood stove to burn the wood pellets, that way you wouldn't have to cut down as many trees to heat your home during winter.
Good idea, I might consider that. Although I don't think a few buckets of sawdust will make such a big difference, but I was looking for a way to make use of it so if it's not too expensive, I might go for it.
@@Toms_Sweden It would be something that one would gradually accumulate over time, but you can also is other organic matter like dry leaves to make pellets. You can aquire sawdust from any company that makes wood products.
Wie weet volgende jaren wanneer onze eigen compost gereed is...
Nice videos you make❤ Iam sure mane of us Are very interested in hov big is your property, and in what range was the price? Do you work outside in society too?
Welkom in Zweden. Zitten jullie in Värmland of Dalarna?
@@babalawohrg I am aware and agree up to a point but I believe I also mentioned that we have plenty of meadows that we keep unmowed and we plan on planting more trees and plants in the garden areas, it's just a matter of priorities. And the idea of unmowed land is nice and holistic and everything, but practically it also needs to make sense for 2 people, dogs and cats (who don't enjoy mosquitoes, midges and snakes). So I agree with your point but we need to strike a balance. And now it's too much to the lawn-y bit of that balance, but entirely unkempt would be too much to the other side.
This is my first time seeing your vedieos. I have several questions I hope you can reply to sometime. How far are you from the Netherlands? What do you do for a living, job? Is Sweden a lot different from your home country? What do you like best, worst there? How far are you from grocery store, gas station, other necessitates?
That's a lot of questions, feels a bit like a job interview ;). We live in the Värmland region of Sweden and Google maps can tell you the distance. Probably about 1600km. I don't work but Nathalie does. We live a 7 min drive from a village with supermarket and half an hour from a bigger village with more shops. The rest of the questions we'll maybe answer in a video in the near future.
You can buy a snow plow or can you hire a snow ❄️ plow driver to plow your driveway once a week ? Im in the upper midwest in the US , I hire snow plow guy he plows it once a week 👍
The culture clash in this video is soooo funny; A City boy filled with energy and excitement buying all sorts of way too small machinery. The size of the equipment is generally great for the Netherlands in the city where you have a, according to the Dutch, 'big' house and garden .... And then you end up in Sweden where things are.... different. For me as a Dutch 'country girl', who has lived abroad, I can see the differences. It might be frustrating for you, but afterwards you can have a good laugh about it with a campfire and a good drink (that Dutch friends have taken with them....).
I took it in Karlstad but I hear there are places nearer as well. They just don't give courses that often. A neighbour is starting in Lesjöfors in November I think. And yes we live close to Lesjöfors 😊
Understandable. There is off course plenty of work in Sweden too but where we live the houses are very affordable because there's just no work to be had. Se we're lucky that Nathalie could take her remote job from the Netherlands and continue from here. However, if you buy a house with no/low mortgage, you may not need your IT job and could do some other work that IS available locally...?
Fields are always in high demand in Sweden. Why not earn a bit of money of that land? You could charge for having animal owners letting their animals out for grazing during the summer. Especially horseowners often let their horses be at rest grazing for a few weeks during the summer (sommarbete) and usually pay well.
@@erikaeriksson9840 makes sense, but I wouldn't know how to go about it and I honestly don't really want fencing there. We know some people that have sheep and have offered our land but so far they've managed fine on their own. We'll keep it in mind but I'm not instantly charmed by the idea. Thanks for the tip though 😉
@@Toms_Sweden Sheep are a great idea if the neighbours change their mind. They will keep the meadow perfectly in shape , and they are also less bulky to bring back if the run off, rather than cows :) Also very nice to be around.

I am new to your channel (new subscriber) and was frantically looking for your previous episodes w/o finding any. Is this your first post? If so, welcome to YT and I eagerly look forward to your future vlogs. Being of "advanced years", I find these types of adventures relaxing (well, maybe not for you all) and fulfilling a 60 year old (I am pushing 81 now) unfulfilled dream of striking out on my own and homesteading up in Alaska. Sigh; wasn't to be due to romance, marriage, kids, career, and the ages rapidly drifting by. Go for it----this Yank will be watching from afar.
@@klazyy641 welcome and thank you for the lovely comment! I do have a few more videos but only 3 are in English. I started in Dutch for friends and family but after a while noticed that other were watching as well so I switched to English. You should be able to click my name and see all my videos there. There's a tour of the property and a new vlog of renovating the stairs with more to come as we keep working on the property.
Great to hear you're getting something out of it and hopefully living vicariously through us. Thanks again for the warm comment, it's very much appreciated!
gratulation new swedish members!
Oh Gosh, all these must have been expensive. Congrats on your achievements 😊
You know how it is, genieten met volle teugen 🎉❤
@@Toms_Sweden 👍
He could have located further north in Sweden. Still 1100 kilometers to go..
i had a shitty day , this comment made me smile , thanks !
Could have been Denmark though
I wouldn't mind some more shading and shelter near the stream but I don't plan on planting any more trees in the meadows, apart from some fruit trees in one small part on the other side of the road.
maybe consider buying a robot goat for the meadow? ;)
Love your Dogs
nice work
I think please point that roof chimney it totally needs repointing ,love the house and land and your animals .
Haha yeah there's a lot that needs doing but we can't do everything all at once unfortunately 😅
I certainly wouldn't mind more videos in English (or Swedish!), so I'm subbing in hopes of that :D
Lycka till!
@@Jon.Alexander there will definitely be more videos in English. Not sure about the frequency yet though. Thanks for the sub! 😊
Bravo!
verry nice to watch,i Just to live in australia and kanada.but it looks great on youre propertie all the best.now from cologne. and to old to make new plans
1. You should try scything.
2. Meadows are great for biodiversity. I would leave them be as much as possible.
Thought the same thing. Especially better keeping open grasslands than planting spruce of all things
its sweden .... how much biodiversity do you want ?
Love your home. Please don’t play music when you’re talking.
Have been reading about dutch people moving to Sweden for some time now. In the process of convincing my friend from Almelo to do that now :) Welcome here and enjoy
Inspiring
Oh, I hope you like it here. Is that close to Lersjöfors? I work in Persberg
You are the type of immigrants nations should want.
Super!
Thankyou 😊
Wie weet volgende jaren wanneer onze eigen compost gereed is...
Interesting video and a beautiful property ! Did you find a job in Sweden or do you have another source of income ?
Nice videos you make❤ Iam sure mane of us Are very interested in hov big is your property, and in what range was the price? Do you work outside in society too?
Property is 8 hectares. Might do a video about costs at some point so I'll keep that to myself for now. Nathalie has a conventional job but I don't.
Hello, you should protect the new planted trees, because the animals like to eat the new leaves!!!
Welkom in Zweden.
Zitten jullie in Värmland of Dalarna?
You are doing a lot of work improving your house and plot, but what are you doing for a living (income)?
I am verry interested in this also!

Please reconsider having a huge mowed lawn. Insects need long grass and flowers so your plants can get pollinated. Its all a cycle.
Welcom
That what I call a handy man 😂
I'm very curious on how much this have set you back by this point? Including the price of the house and area.
You really invested in a proper road, how much was that work? For how long strip?
The culture clash in this video is soooo funny; A City boy filled with energy and excitement buying all sorts of way too small machinery. The size of the equipment is generally great for the Netherlands in the city where you have a, according to the Dutch, 'big' house and garden .... And then you end up in Sweden where things are.... different. For me as a Dutch 'country girl', who has lived abroad, I can see the differences. It might be frustrating for you, but afterwards you can have a good laugh about it with a campfire and a good drink (that Dutch friends have taken with them....).
Also, where are you getting your hunting license? Ive been looking for a place
I took it in Karlstad but I hear there are places nearer as well. They just don't give courses that often. A neighbour is starting in Lesjöfors in November I think. And yes we live close to Lesjöfors 😊
Its close where I live.😅
I'd love to do the same thing, but a big worry is how to make money up there. Even in IT, work from home opportunities are diminishing a lot lately 😭
@@Toms_Sweden Good point. That may also be a fun idea for a video; What daily life is like for locals in a rural area.
❤❤

Never ever remove a woodstove if you're not gonna replace it. You will want to have it when there is no eletricity for a few weeks.
@@Dunken88 but I did say we want to replace it. It will only be removed at the time the new one has arrived.
