- Some jobs on the BMW E31 are gruelling, but this one is just ghastly, you get covered in rust and paint and you spend a couple of hours upside-down under the car.

This job is the de-rusting and rust-proofing of the Radiator Hanger. Unless your BMW E31 is kept nice and warm and dry your radiator hanger will be rusty - and it needs treating before it just gives up and lets the radiators free to roan the engine bay. It's just awful - you have been warned!

Hi Tim. Super impressed by all your videos and fixes. For this fix I think I would have ground away the remainder though. If there is any moisture in there it will bubble up again quickly and risk cracking the paint. Sure looks better though and will be good for the MOT. 👍
Yes, that seems to have been the main gist of the replies - should have done rust conversion first!

This rust proofer seals rust under layet, but rusting will continue.
A really good rust preventer is Fluid Film. You can spray it on once a year and it will keep you protected.

Preventative treatment is preferable before they get like this.
We spray chain grease and cavity wax the underside every year on any car we've owned.
Well worth it to stop the rust ⚠️

Why not use Lanoguard Tim? I used this last summer on my cars, and it's a spray sealant. Neutralises rust and prevents further from developing, according to the gumpf.
Yes, I've seen that advertised so much recently - but first I needed to get to the point where it at least looks decent under there!
Hmm, something else for me to check on my car!. Mind you, in the scale of "horrible Jobs" I'll see your radiator hanger refurbishment and raise you the starter motor removal on a V12 engine! The solenoid on my starter is sticking so the car is troublesome to start sometimes, removing the starter motor looks horrendous so I keep putting the job off. With the warmer weather now I'm running out of excuses not to do it :-)
I don't envy you I have always dreaded the day the starter fails!
Tim, Great video. I am looking for an E31 here in America (not sure if you have any good resources). My dad had a maroon 850 when I was a kid, I loved climbing into it and going for a drive.

Being a BMW there will come a time to replace the cooling system components anyways. I'd say that would be the optimal point to simply pull the hanger out and give it a sand blasting. Otherwise I'd suspect your repair should last you at least a couple of years.
Cooling system completely replaced a while ago fortunately - I've had the car over 10 years so it is probably time again!
Synthetic oil does not need to be done yearly.
I have been running Mobile 1 fully synthetic for 15 years and do a change once every couple years and it runs better than when I got it.
I always like to err on the safe side - I need to at just short of 200,000 miles on the M62 with all original parts!

I did pretty much what you've done here when I changed the water pump back in October. Should've poured Evapo-Rust on tho in hindsight ... still might do that.

As an Australian, I am always amazed by the level of rust in UK vehicles. My 2003 Range Rover L322 has no rust at all. I must admit, I'd have have hit that item with a wire wheel. Oh, should I change from 5W-40 full synthetic (I use Penrite HPR5) to 10W-40 for my M62TUB in the Rangie?
Not only little rust is Aus - but no MOT's either!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I’m not sure about that for other States but annual vehicle inspections are required here in NSW once the vehicle is over 3 (or 5 - not sure which) years old. In some States, inspection is required before the vehicle can be sold.
Spray that with phosphoric acid after cleaning before respray.
The phosphoric acid actually converts the rust thats left into a non corrosive material.
I use Klean-Strip. Concrete Etch, Metal Prep and Rust Inhibitor Outdoor Cleaner.

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformationIMHO, the best thing to treat such a rusty surface is Wurth Rust Converter, as it's supposedly not an acid as well. After applying it you then paint it directly over with whatever you like.
I really enjoy your work keeping your cars in such a good shape even after the disastrous accident. But for just this repair Im sure both you and your car would not mind getting back under the car and work a bit more with a wire wheel to get rid of most of the rust. Just for peace of mind. Im pretty allergic to rust so that's my humble opinion.

Hi Tim, a horrible job indeed, but worth the effort if you can save yourself the issue of having to re-make that panel like I had to. It is without doubt the hardest, most complicated and time-consuming panel I have ever had to make. It took days of careful cutting, grinding , welding and more grinding. As you know, they are now NLA, so needs must. it is definitely one of those jobs that people may put off until it's too late (e.g. me!)

I bought my car from a guy who had a small car sales business near Nottingham. he had owned the car himself for 2 years and had only put 5 miles on it! It had a full 12 months test and looked immaculate, he also took my son's car in part-ex, so it seemed like a good buy. The second time I went out in it, someone pulled out in front of me without looking, so I went to blare the horn, only to find out that the horn didn't work. Further investigation showed that both horns were missing! So much for the 12 months' MOT. I noticed then that the panel looked about the same as yours so should have treated it back then. We live and learn.

Very likely to be the fan - the internal magnets fall off!
I have a 1995 840ci . Would you know how do I remove fuel door
Once it is open it is only clipped into place by the plastic hinge - have a good look at how the catches work before heaving on it!
I gave up on my '97 540i. The repairs just wouldn't stop.
The E39 and E38 do seem to have endless problems - my 740i certainly did!
it will looks a lot better if facelift with E34
