This is the story of my BMW 6-Series E64 which had its Oil Cover explode and drop its oil all over the road. The car had to be driven to safety for 500 yards with zero oil pressure
In this episode I will find out if the N62 engine survived the punishment - Авто та транспорт
Can everyone just appreciate all the work and hassle Timm puts into making videos for us and helps us out so much. He doesn’t get nothing in return but we learn so much from him and avoid stupid bills from the garage and most garages won’t even know these engines, not like Timm anyways so thank you mate. If that happened to me last thing I would’ve thought of doing is recording the video and getting to trying to fix the car but even at worst situations you still try to record and share this information for other 650i owners and really appreciate that mate. We all owe you 🍺 😅
That's very kind of you, I enjoy making the video's so it's no hardship
Totally agree, when any of my cars go wrong I'm heart broken, the last thing I want to do is make a video. Thanks Timm!
Always turn machine threads in the opposite direction until they seat (you will feel the threads drop in) before threading in the tightening direction and this will protect from cross threading.
Good point unless youre upside down lying on your back under the car. I mean the rule stays the same but your positon is awkward and you have to pay extra attention what you do. Would be no problem at all if operated from service pit or a car lift.
@@bargla actually even more important in this instance as its a higher likelihood of a cross thread from a poor initial angle.
Thanks! It was a little slippery at the time just holding on to the blasted plug! I wouldn't have cross-threaded the plug in any case, upside-down or the right way up!
Good to see the 650 live on! My new filter cover just arrived to prevent this on mine.
I'm sure a few folks @ BMW are scratching their heads after seeing how sales figures on this part have increased within a week haha.
Thanks! And thanks for watching! Yes, they will be puzzled!
Extremely good news, the 650 lives! I was glad to see your comment on cleaning out the drains, saw the decomposing leaves and thought your standards were dropping, but no, faith in humanity restored 😅
Thanks! It certainly need to be done, although the brake booster area was dry it was also completely blocked up!
It roars back to life thats great news! Mabie drive it for a week and change oil and filter again just to be safe and see what the filter catches in the week of running :)
Thanks! And thanks for watching! I might do that (but probably won't)!
After watching this I brought a new oil filter housing to fit on next oil change. Didn’t happen quick enough, I got 8L dumped on my drive and then when fitting new housing, it would not screw in! The old unit was Bakelite, the new unit was a soft plastic and very quickly the thread was crossed. I ended up filing down the first couple of threads in order to get it to fit. Fortunately I never drove the car. Oil light came on during cold start. What a coincidence. Great video by the way👍
Eight Litres of oil makes an awful mess doesn't it!
Hi Timm this is Alvin your number one fan. Im glad to hear all is well with the 650. I see you had on the cool leather jacket. Great video as always my friend. Blessings
ALVIN! You're back, thanks I wore it especially for you
Glad she's back up and running!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Timm apologizing for his video production quality, even though Timm’s is better than 99% of what’s out there… glad to hear the V8 is all ok. I’m doing 5k mile or every year oil changes after watching the engine engineer for the GT-R, and his only suggestion for engine life was 5k mile oil change intervals. Blackstone Labs has told me time doesn’t matter unless they are older carb engines, but annual seems good.
Thanks! Yes, annually make a lot of sense
Watch out for that drain plug under the brake booster. My E60 550i had that get blocked up. The brake booster got fully submerged after heavy rain. Then the vaccum pump on the front of the engine sucked water through. That then mixed water into the engine oil. Luckily that happened the night before I took it for service. I drove it for about an hour to the garage. They called me up and said "just let your engine oil out and it looks like 50% water."
Took me ages to diagnose but luckily no permanent damage done.
I was surprised it was blocked, I had only cleared it early in the year, but blocked it was!
Great news Timm - she lives to fight another day!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
What a relief! Your a lot cooler than I would have been.
It was either broken or it wasn't! Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Timm, Thank goodness you didn't get any engine damage! Good karma for you, especially making all these helpful videos!
Glad you like them!
Thanks, Timm. Always very informative. I'm glad the E64 lives on. Managing my E63 is easier because of your advice.
Would have spent a lot of money in the garage if it wasnt for Timm!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Glad to hear there was no damage and the E64 lives on, cheers and thanks for the video.
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Thanks to you Timm, I've ordered a new oil filter housing for my 2008 750 Li with 240K miles.. Just to be safe!
Good plan! Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Happy it worked out for you Timm. I was about to say, sell both the E64 and E31 and get one mighty good car as a replacement, but it looks like both are surviving!
Still fighting on, was tempted with replacements but I got over it!
Hi Timm it’s Sandro I’m glad everything is all good with your 650i. I was really worried for you and was waiting for your next video after that catastrophic incident. I was pretty sure that it would’ve been anyways but just wanted to see the confirmation and hear your happy voice after watching your previous video I felt really bad and was just hoping that you will have the car back on the road. Even though it must of been a lot of hassle and stress what you went through you still smashed it and got it back on the road in no time. Well done mate, all the best!!! Thank you for sharing.
Always my pleasure Sandro. Thanks! And thanks for watching!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation my pleasure Timm, thank you again for everything 🙌🏼.
Very glad to learn that nothing untoward happened and that the car is still as good as ever, nice one
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
So glad you got lucky here. Your previous video popped up in my suggestions so had to see how it turned out. 👍
Thanks! And thanks for watching! Phew!
Great job Timm,very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it and my pleasure!
The filming is amazing! You have practically 3 inches between your head and the engine and the ground, it’s super work! Thank you for sharing, love your hard work.
Very kind of you. Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Good job Timm. Nice to see it back.
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Absolutely delighted for you Timm 👍👍
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Close call!!, glad that had a happy ending, very informative, let’s hope BMW can cope with all the demands!
Thanks! Yes, I'll ask at my local BMW dealer Group 1
BMW built an engine that can run without oil and people have the audacity to say that it's unreliable.
Great work, Timm, I'm glad to see that the beast will live on!
Well said!
Thanks as always. So glad your car is OK!!!
Thanks Steve!
Love it! Fantastic news that it's back on the road with such a simple fix. Have been thinking of changing my E63 650i for a F13 650, but now having second thoughts, given the seemingly bulletproof characteristics of the N62 engine! Thanks as always for your videos.
Made of stern stuff these old engines! Thanks!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Well done Timm that's really positive news.
Thanks Lloyd and good to hear from you!
Happy days Tim!! Happy for you
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
I’m glad your car survived 👍🏻
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
This just happened to my dads e60 550i, I had change the filter house 2 years ago, due to the drain bolt in the filter house was rounded off, with an Febi Bilstein replacement. That didn’t hold up, it cracked straight from the treads down to the bottom where it curves in to the 24mm socket drive. Luckily it happened with the car idling in the driveway, when it was warming up and defrosting here in winter. Just ordered an oem Bmw and wrote your mounting tip back my ear, greetings from Denmark
I had never heard of it until it happened to me - and now I hear about it all the time - you were very lucky!
Happy for you BOTH my man. Great vlogs, and information. Happy days again, ... Now for the E31 to be resurrected:-)
Thanks! I'll be gong to see the E31 tomorrow at the body shop
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation good luck:-)
Phew so pleased for you! Will get mine done ASAP
Good plan!
Whew! Crisis averted. Good deal! BTW, I have had an alternate filter canister for quite some time for my '08 N62 (750i). I alternate every oil change so that I can prepare the filter with one on the bench before I remove the other. Anyway, that alternate canister is from Dorman. Looks exactly like the original and fits exactly the same. Haven't had any problems with cross-threading, etc. So there are working aftermarket alternatives without the possible issues of the new style OE part.
Thanks, that's interesting! I decided just to but the cover and filter directly from BMW 'just in case'!
Crisis averted! I need to replace the filter housing on mine. My lil hex drain screw is stripped and this video is the validation i needed to do the work
Make sure you do!
What would all of us BMW lovers do without Timm?!! He's our hero!
I have learned so much that I would never have known about my 2001 740i from watching Timm!
I bought it from the original owner not knowing what I was getting myself into LOL😅!
She performed impeccable maintenance through the local dealership and kept the car in fantastic condition however, with its age and the known eccentricities of the E38 there are many little things to do . .. .. and big things 😅!
Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into these videos, Timm!
I grew up working on the much more simple American V8s and you've given me the knowledge-and courage- to work on this 740!
Very kind of you as always!
That BMW gong sound is the bloody worst sounding thing ever. And only owners can relate. Glad shes back on the road.
It's horrible! Thanks for watching!
Great video. First video I’ve seen from your channel. You sound like Moses from ‘come fly with me’ 😄
I'll take that!
I was waiting with great anticipation for the best result for you Tim! The BMW gods have blessed you! Am absolutely thrilled that you have got the 650i through this mishap, fantastic result.
Thanks! And thanks for watching! Still my favorite film!
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I know what you mean. That movie brings back so many good memories!
So pleased for you Timm.
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Excellent video Timm
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
As a E31 (850 Ci) owner I watch all your videos and find them both interesting and informative. I was so pleased to see you were not going to give up on the 840 and look forward to the ongoing progress.
My 850 sits out the winter months in doors but I find is a better way to build up the oil pressure after its winter sleep is to remove the fuel pump fuses ( 2 on a V12 ) this obviously will not allow the engine to fire but also will not wet the spark plugs or wash the bores with fuel which is very important from a long sleep cold start
Good plan Simon, just remember there will still be fuel-line pressure and it may still attempt to start
I had exactly the same issue when I replaced my old oil filter housing . Though I was cross threading it,,, so a few hours of filing and grinding and eventual giving up cause I butchered it so much, put the old one back on, contacted the seller of the one I bought it from , explained what had happened. He explained I needed be firm with it and it might feel like I'm cross threading it but it will be fine. Lesson learned 🙄🙄
It's a strange one Bobby - very weird!
Good to see it running again!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Thanks Tim. I always learn something new from your videos. Cheers from Massachusetts!
Thanks David, hello from Hampshire (the old one)
I have an F12 650 but I enjoy your videos. I love that you're as enthusiastic about your car as I am about mine. Really happy to see that she survived. Now I'm off to change the oil filter cap on mine too 😁
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Interesting! How do you find the F12 650? I'm thinking about changing to a F13 650. Lots of horror stories online - How's it been for you?
Going to swap the housing with my next oil change. Thank you for the information. ❤
My pleasure, and be careful with the new one, it's a bit fiddly!
Good to see all went fine!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
I had the same issue with my N62 and the new filter housing, even on a lift they are a pig to install. One more thing to worry about and be conscious of with the N62 and oil changes, is the oil pump's non return valve that magically disintegrates and falls out when you do a filter change. It happened me 6 months ago and reading online it's a common problem; my E66 740Li is at about 140k miles and 18 years old now. The only saving grace is that the N62 filter is at the bottom of the engine and the failing of the valve has not effect on oil pressurisation. BMW even has a TSB on it from 2006 when the N62 was still quite young. I guess I did quite well in the end to reach 18 years. Interesting to see you using Castrol 0w30, I changed from Castrol when they lost their BMW LL certification and have been using 5W40 for many years.
I also use LL01 5w40 on my old bimmers
Well, that's interesting Steve, I'll keep an eye out for that next oil-change!
i think mines the origional 2004 one, never thought about changing this tbh, ill get one ordered :), cheers Tim
Great stuff Steve!
Great news that. Glad she’s saved
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Great outcome, good news indeed.
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Nice outcome Tim. Very pleased a very nice car, hasn't ended up being very broken. If it had been a modern BM, it would have blown up into a million bits. Old school beemers are the way forward! 👍
Yes, pretty hardy these old ones! Thanks! And thanks for watching!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation You're welcome. Its a channel i enjoy watching. I'm possibly in the market for an E63. It'll be a daily driver, so can't decide whether the 630i would be the better choice over the 650i. Fuel economy plays a part, but isn't a deciding factor. Upkeep will be the main one, given how old these cars now are.
I am happy it worked out!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Great news 👏
Thanks for watching!
Splendid!
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
Glad it worked out well for you
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Tim, you should have removed the fuel pump fuse...... just joking! Great result mate. Ah, always had you down for a muso, spotted a bass guitar on one of your vids. I was a blues player, stopped playing about 3 years back now when arthritis spoiled the pleasure of it all. Still have a few guitars but I guess I should sell them now and let someone else get some pleasure from them. Thanks for all your help again.
Thanks Bob. My brain stopped me! More stuff here: www.meeknet.co.uk/Chase/index.htm
So happy it is good to go! I will be getting the oil filter housing replaced in January! Quick question, I use 5 W 30 oil, you mentioned you use 0W 30…..any reason why? Congratulations on the repair.
I use 5w40
Good plan! I used the recommended oil to start with but hated the Valvetronic noise on the over-run, ever since I have used 0W-30 - less top-end noise thank goodness!
What a relief! You dodged a bullet there, so happy for you!
Quick question, would it have been possible to pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine? They you would avoid washing down the cylinders with fuel.
Thanks! Disconnecting the coils inhibits the injectors (no spark - no fuel), this has been the same since the introduction of the M70 in 1988. Removing the fuel pump fuse would still allow the car to start as there is always pressure at the fuel rail - if you want to disconnect the fuel pump you must also disconnect the quick-connect coupling and remove the fuel pressure - so much easier to disconnect the coils. I could have disconnected the injectors at the DME but the same connector also has Vanos and Valvetronic on it, the coils connector is simply for those.
Phew.. result 👏🏼
Thanks, that was a sweaty one!
Thanks have been having problems getting the new filter cover in. Tried all brands and end up reusing the old filter cover
Now you know why - make sure you replace it with a new one though, the old one WILL fail at some point
Bloody 'el !! not your year, My 2007 XKR has sprung a coolant leak from the front of the engine , not bad considering shes an old gal, Got my seats re colored in the B7 gonna for sure put a new filter housing, and I love getting to it, love the oil splashing in my face such a good time every time !!!
It's a real pain under the car isn't it!
Very happy all was well.
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
So pleased for you Tim ! That last 2 litres of oil 🛢 saved the day I think. Great news ! She sounds beautiful.
Could I ask what you do for a living ? You look like someone in the music industry?
Thanks! I was a profession musician in the 70's - 80's - but I run my own company now: www.troglotech-products.com/
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I thought you were a musician...thanks for replying Tim 😁
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Wow very impressive products I bet product development is interesting to say the least ! 😎
glad shes fine tim
Drat.. I read your comment before watching. Spoiled.
Thanks!
Is there not any torque specifications for the sump plug and filter housing? However, as always, another informative and interesting video, I always enjoy the content of your Channel.
Thanks, and yes, 10Nm for the filter cover and 25Nm for the drain plug - however, I started working on cars and bikes in the 60's and got my first torque wrench around 2010!
Install a Fumoto Oil Drain Valve in place of that oil drain bolt. It makes oil changes far easier.
Replace a simple effective low tech bolt with a complicated more expensive additional leak/failure point with a questionable unnecessary feature?
You sound like a BMW engineer
That would be much too easy - and thanks for watching!
Excellent news the 8 series lives!
Thanks!
Tim, thanks for all your time and efforts in showing us how you get it done! Big shout out from the USA! Thinking of getting one of these now that the kid are grown and flown. Only thing that is scary is the valve guide seals, are there any other areas of concern with these car? I'm pretty good at wrenching and have own, 2003 E39 540 Msport, E70 3.0, E83 and a Porsche Cayenne S V8. Coupe or convert?
Thanks! Get a coupe, the convertible is always causing problems. More info on how to buy a good one here: ua-cam.com/video/Aw9w7Jrgm9c/v-deo.html
Fairly certain I’ve got the same issue! Oil all over the drive. So much oil I couldn’t Jack up the car because the Jack was slipping on the centre jacking point I’ve had to concede defeat and get it booked into garage! Hopefully it’s just this and a fairly simple fix
Sure to be the same - I've heard about this problem so many times now
As these cars age makes sense to include it as part of the shedule every other year would'nt hurt maybe overkill but cheaper than being dragged off the road or next years brakedown premium,
Yes, good point!
I would have removed the fuel pump fuse instead of disconnecting the coils, this will stop washing the boars with petrol.
As an owner of the M60 that can be prone to cylinder wash / flooding, I agree, right up til you introduced wild pigs into it for some reason
Nothing wrong with good advice
@greebj never been any good at smelling!

Hi Tim, Thanks for the reply, that's why I watch your video's, you know more about the cars than me, I have a 2006 650i individual msport, just got it and I love it.

You should check the timing, or at least scan the car for codes as there are many cases of the N62 jumping timing on bank 2 when oil pressure is low.
Thanks, but it's fine, still oodles of power and nothing rattling!
I might have had bank 2 skip on my e70 n62b48 as I just had the same thing happen just two days ago! Dumped a brand new oil change onto the ground…. I’m now getting cam position error codes😢.
Should also remove the fuel pump fuse when cranking engine over. Otherwise you are flooding the pistons and catalytic converters with petrol. Which is not good for either.
Don't panic! Disconnecting the coils inhibits the injectors (no spark - no fuel), this has been the same since the introduction of the M70 in 1988. Removing the fuel pump fuse would still allow the car to start as there is always pressure at the fuel rail - if you want to disconnect the fuel pump you must also disconnect the quick-connect coupling and remove the fuel pressure - so much easier to disconnect the coils. it's probably better to crank without fuel (rather than spark), not sure if he BMW ecu is clever enough not to inject fuel if the coils are not connected?

It wont cause immediate damage but it would have directly affected the bearings (not necessarily to the point of bearing rattle), i would also check for cylinder bore scoring since that engine can be prone to this issue too
Let's face it, If either was a problem the engine is a goner - so, I'm not looking, just driving!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Brilliant! I had an N43 that drove on low oil pressure for a couple weeks (chain guides blocked the oil pickup), bearings make noise when cold in the morning but that engine is destined for the scrap heap anyway
Timm, hope it's all still going well! Just out of interest do you know how many litres are left when the 'minimum oil level' warning comes on?
Fine here Michelle! It goes off at around 5 liters
The parts diagram on your last vid showed the center column in the filter but you didn't have one.
It did have one, you just didn't see it!
On my mercedes s600 the oil filter housing is made of the same plastic material.
I'm thinking now to change to a billet aluminium one made by weistec engineering , specifically made for m275
I'm not sure on the metal replacement, I would worry about differential expansion....
Hi Tim , why are you using 0w30 and not 5w30? Did you noticed a difference between them? Thanks
I used the recommended oil to start with but hated the Valvetronic noise on the over-run, ever since I have used 0W-30 - less top-end noise thank goodness!
Hey TIMMs, I have a question about oil, in Poland they use 0w40 or 5w40 oils for e63, e64... 645ci, 650i... have you always used 0w30 in your country? What mileage did you buy the vehicle with? Best regards from Poland, Sebastian Kluz , It's great that you managed to save the motor, these are very good V8 motors... not like the new plastic cars.
5w40 I use it on all BMWs
Hello Sebastian, I used the recommended oil to start with but hated the Valvetronic noise on the over-run, ever since I have used 0W-30 - less top-end noise thank goodness!
Hi Tim. As a measure of preventive maintenance I want to replace my oil filter cover as well. How much did you pay for yours?
I bought the cover assembly which included the filter, crush washer and big O-ring for around £60 direct from BMW
I am somewhat confused to your choice of oil. I have been advised to use Castrol EDGE 5 W-30 LL Engine Oil 8 Litre and not with 0 W30
I used the recommended oil for the first service but hated the valve-train noise on the over-run at high revs. The 0W-30 fixed that, and I have used the same ever since!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
Sounds ok, but I simply don’t know if my 645 does it and would be able to recognise it and when it happens, because I don’t know what a valve train noise is and what overrun at any revs is
Could have pulled the fuel pump fuse instead of pulling the coils

Hi Tim I was looking at it from my X5 E53 N62 perspective, the fuel pump fuse is easily accessable in the rear fuse box and the fuel rail has a schraedler valve to relieve residual fuel pressure@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
Dodged the old Bullet? Cheers.
I did! Thanks for watching!
How many miles does the bmw have ?
My 840ci has 200,000 miles and my 650i has 140,000 or so, not spring chickens that's for sure!
