BMW 650i 6-SERIES GEARBOX PROBLEM AND FIX

  • After having the 650i throw all of its oil out on the road it is time for the gearbox to have a go at fizzling out. This is the story of fault-finding and fixing the problem. This fix is the same on any BMW that uses the Mechatronics Gearboxes. In this case it is on my BMW E64 650i

    Overwhelmingly impressed Timm! A BMW garage would probably have wanted to fit a new gearbox! Diagnostics is everything.

    You're 6 series is just at that age for anyone else that has one ,,, will sooner or later have very similar problems and if like me,, will appreciate what you are doing here,, and i for one love what you are doing. Keep it going tim. Thanks.

    Great job, Tim! Common issues include cracking wires, typically in the boot. An option is to purchase wires with silicone wrapping and rewire that section from connector to connector. With more flexibility, they are less prone to cracking.

    Got my heart set on a 6 series, they’re a timeless looking design but I still can’t find one within budget, below 10k, with a good service history and respectable mileage. In the meantime I’m living vicariously through you Timm. Your videos are priceless, your hard work and enthusiasm are appreciated. Hope you and yours have a fantastic Christmas pal. Thank you.

    Fantastic job Timm! I hope BMW sees this and maybe does a recall on this, though they probably might not because of the fact it doesn't affect driving unless you put it into manual mode. But again, thank you for sharing that fix and luckily that hasn't happened to my car but I'm sure there's a lot of BMWs out there who have is having that problem now. Merry Christmas Tim and a happy New Year. Thanks for keeping us BMW owners well informed!

    I was surprised there near the end when you showed the gauges when you checked to see if the Steptronic was working and the speedo had mph in larger lettering around the outside of the face and km/h in smaller font in the inner area. I thought that arrangement was used only for us hardheads in the U.S. who have never adopted the metric system.
    I bought a 2007 750Li not long ago, so found this channel searching for N62 repair videos. Mine has apparently suffered the alternator bracket gasket failure, which didn't dump oil nearly as fast as your cracked filter housing in a previous video. Now I'll be scared that one is going to happen to me.

    Love the detail you put into diagnosing and correcting the fault using the oldschool approach. This might sound a bit "dumb", but since one wire had failed from improper bend radius and the other 3 were about to fail, why not reroute all 4 to outside of the troublesome cover? It appears there is plenty of room and would have a much gentler bend too.

The four wires are intact but I’m a bit skeptical about the spring switch inside the selector switch. Do you think it’s possible that might be the culprit? I get no D/S light in the dashboard and everything else seems fine. Kind regards from the blistering cold winter of Iceland.

    Hi Timm, Loving your videos and you've been a massive help as I researched in readiness for purchasing a 2004 645ci E64. Thank you! The one I purchased came with a mountain of history including invoices over the past 12 months for a gearbox refurb and all the usual N62 seals, so fingers crossed!...But something I hadn't identified during my research was cracks in the front fenders, relating to the bolts I believe. Mine has a couple of cracks in each. Do you have any advice on how best to repair and prevent re-occurrence? Many Thanks

    The only downfall I’ve had with my 650 is the gearbox, replaced mechtrronics and seals, it runs great but every now and then it will mysteriously slip in 4th on acceleration and throw a fault for the clutch pack. The automatic zf has always been clunky. If I ever have to do anymore transmission work I’ll most likely look to convert it to manual. Other than that the car is great and looks as new as the day I’ve bought it.
    Merry Christmas 🤶🎄Tim.

    That's a interesting issue and fix. One little wire and so many problems. I wonder what could be my issue in 2002 E39 540iA where car would not start if gear selector be at Park. Press it harder forward in this possition, or swith to Neutral and the motor starts. I wonder if it could also be some electrical wire as your issue, or is it related to bowden cable that runs to gearbox underneeth :)

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation

      Yes, very likely to be a slightly out of adjustment bowden cable to the slector on the side of the gearbox: (Part 5) www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=DN63-USA-03-2002-E39-BMW-540i&diagId=24_0720

    Hi Timm, thanks for all your fantastic comment. I have a question I couldn´t find an answer to anywhere(a reliable one). I am suspecting one of my MAF sensors is going bad because of the readings from INPA - on idle, it´ll be 22-25, and sometimes it´ll even be higher. When driving it´ll get to 400 on full throttle but obviously this can be "normal". No experience with what the readings should be. In the past few weeks I´ve noticed 1lit higher consumption with no other change in driving conditions, and my exhaust is blacker on the inside. There is also jerking when letting off light throttle for example in city traffic or when I need to drive at 80kph speed limit and need to let off the throttle again. it is always around 1700-1500 rpm. Would you have any advice for me what to look for? I don´t want to go throwing money at it without being sure what is actually the problem.

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  2 місяці тому +1

      21-25 Kg per hour is fine on the V8's. The N62 is pretty horrible in respect to the engine software, especially the early ones, I noticed that on all of them that I have driven, the Sport mode is hardly useable - don't worry!

    Hi Timm, very informative, my car is identical to yours except it's a 2008 model with "sports" transmission, meaning the indicators are in the gear shifter itself. My transmission was overhauled a while back, incl. a new valve body but I still get a loud bang occassionally when I accellerate hard and scares the crap out of me every time. I always suspected this to be an electrical issue but not being an expert it's bloody hard to sort out. Any ideas?

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation

      Get the gearbox adaptations reset (can be done on diagnostics), it makes a huge difference on the Mechatronics 6-speed boxes

    • @robertfaulkner7152
      @robertfaulkner7152 6 місяців тому +1

      Also, if I may add you might be low on transmission fluid, especially if you have the steptronic transmission. BMW calls the fluid in the transmission lifetime but it's not. It needs to be replaced every 60,000 miles, and those transmission pans are made out of plastic and they will warp and leak over that period of time... Cheers!
