  • You are driving along in your BMW E31, E32, E34 or E36 and all of a sudden the MID goes BONG!! but doesn't tell you what the problem is. Even pressing the 'CHECK' button doesn't tell you.
This video explains what causes the mystery bong and how to fix it. Along the way we are going to remove the boot (trunk) latch mechanism, the boot switch and replace the boot trim with its blind rivets

It doesn't matter what anyone is driving,,, when you hear that tone of a bong, then it can only be a BMW. There's no other bong out there that sounds like a BMW bong... thanks timm. Great advice again 😃👍👍

My OCD kicked in when I saw the rust on the body work under the rubber seal, but then I heard you say that you had rust treated before fitting the new rear plastic trim, can go to bed a happy!

Hi Timm, this is Alvin, your number one fan. Another great video, I had to adjust mine the other day. Great looking jacket. 😊

ALVIN! Good to hear from you - if you are adjusting then you should be oiling and greasing as well!

2006 BMW X5 E53 4.4i! Just did the timing chains without taking the engine out and without taking the RHS head or sump off. All because of a having a mystery bong, got to love a mystery bong. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hi Timm - thank you, another great video! Is there any chance perhaps of you doing a country road trip in the 840 to somewhere unknown planned and with maybe a like meet-up club?

Hi Tim. Just found your channel. I have a 1999 e39 2.5tds. The traction control & abs lights have come on the dash as soon as car is started. Also the car will sort of choke and try to cut out when driving...what should i look to diagnose for these issues.

Hi Timm, long time subscriber here and I've watched many of your videos covering odd bmw issues, but I might have a new one here for you! I've got a 2008 e63 and have an issue where some dash lights stay on even when the car is locked and the key fob is in my hand (it's the little screen that displays the mileage, in between the speedo and rev counter). Battery is only 2 years old and I've had an auto elec look at the issue but he was stumped. The same display will also sometimes randomly go into the service menu when I'm driving, or display the symbol that says I need to reset the clock 🤷🏻 any advice on what might be causing it would be greatly appreciated 👍

Hello Paul, the clock resetting means the battery voltage has dipped too low. Although the battery is reasonably new they need to be filled with electricity! I explain it all here: ua-cam.com/video/8AKYiOI_nyg/v-deo.html

Hi Timm, thanks for your response and for the linked video. I've watched that this morning and it's super helpful and informative as always 👍 I live not far south from you and used to be up and down the a3 regularly but unfortunately the car isn't getting much use atm. I'll get the battery fully charged up and hope that fixes my problem 🤞 Thanks again

Sorry, one last question I forgot ask... a friend of mine has a battery charger (for lead acid batteries) but is it ok to charge an agm battery with this or do they require a different / special charger? I've looked online but as usual the advice is conflicting 😩

Are sure it’s not the temperature approaching near freezing gong?

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  2 місяці тому

You get a message on the MID with the low temperature - you don't with a badly adjusted boot (trunk)

My bong is dead, no impedance. I took one out of a 2007 X5. It is rather large, 60mm dia. Would it be safe to splice it in?

The bong on the early BMW's are more than just a speaker, they have quite a bit of electronics in them. You need the right one for the E31 - it is the same as the E32's which you will find on Ebay

Hi Timm, this prompted me to ask about 4 mystery bongs that I get on my E63 2008 650i
They completely at random times with no fault message. This has been happening for about 3 years and no one has been able to explain it.... any thoughts? Regards Don.

No message means something like a door, hood or trunk is the source of the bong - check all for tightness when closed

Thanks Tim, must be an intermittent sensor as all seems to be tight so I will have to live with it. But 4 bongs seems a bit pushy!

BMW still sell the sunroof skin - and second-hand ones on Ebay, good luck finding a non-rusty one though!
