      Dave sometimes you use a 50% gray layer for dodging and burning and sometimes a transparent layer, when should you use one versus the other? Thanks Dave

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 роки тому +1

      Good question Mario. They give the exact same results. I use the 50% Gray because it is easier to see the results on the video (when I Option or ALT click) on that layer. Even if you don’t use the 50% gray layer you can still use the Gray brush to reduce or erase the effect.

    Hi Dave: Thanks again for selecting my images for this week's video. I enjoyed seeing your approach to bringing my image to life. As well, the I enjoyed hearing about using the 'Blend-If' slider to give more control to the vignette. I should also mention that I captured this image while taking a cable-car across the gorge so I only have just a few seconds to click the shutter. I am really happy with the image that I captured. Cheers, Keith

    It was fun to follow you on this shot - I use as for a matte painting I am actually working on. Maybe you could mention that when you are dodging and burning, the neutral grey brush works fine caus he neutralise the doge-and-burn process where you need it.

    I love what your selective burning and dodging does to create more texture, Dave. I've started doing this more with my own images and it does work. I find that if you just follow the light already in your image, it's pretty easy. The masks can help too, of course, to target where the paint gets applied, but I like having the ability to add as much (or as little) paint as I want to achieve the desired result.

    Dave….thanks for another great full edit. Allows us to see your thought process through all portions of your edit. I loved the extra tip of modifying the vignette mask with blendif. I have been using the modify mask feature on my vignettes with a darks 1 or 2 to get a similar affect. But I think the blend if is quicker and gives a more realtime view of what is happening to the vignette. Thanks for that great tip. Love your TK Fridays!

      I have an Wacom Tablet that is probably close to 10 years old and I have always enjoyed using it. It's an Intuos PTK640. I haven't researched them lately because mine is still working fine. There are other brands on the market now. Maybe some other folks who have recently purchased tablets will comment.

    Dave…. I am starting to look into maybe picking up a Wacom based on your recommendation. First, what model do you use? And second, do you have or can you make a video on using it. I'm told there is a steep learning curve and requires lots of hand/eye coordination.

  • @darrellwright3025

    Hello Dave, thanks for the great videos. You have greatly shortened my learning curve. I have never used a Wacom, what do you think would be a good size to use?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 роки тому

      Hi Darrell. I bought my Wacom tablet many years ago ( I am thinking 10 years). I have a PTK 640. I think the surface area (where you use the pen) is around 6 x 9 inches. The overall size is around 10 x 12 inches (just a guess, I haven't measured it)... Wacom products are good but there are probably other products on the market today that are also good and maybe at lower pricing. One thing I can say about my Wacom Tablet is that for all of the years I have owned and used it, it has never given me any problems. Maybe some other folks who have new Tablet and Pen products will chime in with their thoughts...

What did you do for Photoshop to easily select the area you designated?

    HI Dave
    Great tutorial. I have just noticed that at the end of each colour grading layer there is a circle with half black and half white. If you click this it takes you back to the colour grading settings for that layer and you can readjust the settings if you think it is necessary. However on the latest version of TK8 you get a curves layer sign at the left hand end of the colour grading layer and when you click this it takes you back to the curves layer in the properties box and no colour grading setting. You then have to click on the colour grading tool and there is still no sign of your previous settings so you have to click on the small square for either the shadows , highlights and mid-tones and then your previous settings appear and you can readjust to what you want. Is this a new feature of the updated TK8 or have I got mine set up wrong. Hope you can help.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 роки тому

      Brian here is the proper way of using the Color Grading Tool for making re-adjustments: if you need to make a readjustment, go back to the Color Grading Tool Layer that you want to re-adjust and click on it to make sure it is active. Then Make sure the Color Grading Tool is showing up in the TK8 MultiMask Panel. If it is not then Click on the Color Grading Tool Icon in the TK8 MultiMask Panel to open up the Color Grading Tool. If you left click on the rectangle with the three colors (black, gray and white) (Top of the Color Grading Tool Interface) you will be able to see if any actual color grading was applied to the Active Layer, represented by where the Blocks are located within the Color Wheel. If you need to adjust the Luminosity value of any of the Blocks (black, gray or white) you will need to left click on the block you wish to re-adjust and you will see where it is currently set and you will now be able to alter it. You can also move the Block in the Color Wheel to adjust a Color Grade. To Reset all of the blocks Right Click on the Rectangle on the Right of the Color Grading Tool Top Interface. This is the proper way to use the Color Grading Tool. Note: It is very important to never adjust the actual Curves Adjustment in the Properties Panel or that will mess up the Color Grading Tool’s settings for the Active Layer. Make all of your adjustments within the Color Grading Tool…I hope this helps…

      @@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Hi Dave. Thanks for the help and swift reply. great explanation which will help me understand the process. I have been working through your tutorials and I couldn't understand why in your previous tutorials such as " Revisiting the Scottish Islands," when you selected the colour grading tool the layer signified it was an adjustment layer by the small circle shaded black and white. However in your " Blue Mountains Australia," edit when you used the colour grading tool the layer signified it was a curves adjustment layer by the curves sign, and not an adjustment layer with the small circle. This is also the same in your latest tutorial "Reviving a Dull Image." I can't understand why this has changed. Hope you can help

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 роки тому

      Now I see what you mean. Thanks for pointing out the Tutorial the Circle on the Color Grading Tool showed up. The Color Grading Tool has always been a Curves Adjustment Layer so it would make sense to see a Curves Adjustment Icon. I did some research and it seems that the Circle Icon shows up when you have a Small Layer Thumbnail Size but if you increased the Thumbnail Size it would then Display as a Curves Adjustment Icon. The Small Icon Size will show the Circle but Medium and Large will show the Curves Adjustment Icon. You can change the Thumbnail Size by Right Clicking on the Adjustment Layer Icon.

I had forgotten how to do this light painting technique with the Dodge and Burn, and I'm learning lots of new things I can do with the TK8 panel. I wonder if it's possible to do a video on creating amazing black and white images using the TK8 panel, complete with dodge and burn, adding mist and colour overlays, that sort of thing?
