- If you've been a fan of football for a while, you're probably familiar with what I like to call the "attitude era" of the English Premier League.
This was essentially a time between the early 90s (when the competition began) and roughly the mid 2000s, when players were far more aggressive and referees were far more forgiving.
In this time period, the roughest of players were famously referred to as 'hardmen'. And although there were several 'hardmen' type players, very few (if any at all) came close to being as successful as Roy Keane.
With that being said, it's been some time, since he retired. We may all be in need of a refresher on how iconic he really was.
So how good was Roy Keane, really?

I'm a Spurs fan from Belfast. Keane was awesome. The game against Juventus defined his talent and confirmed just how good he was. We all thought how can he compete with Davids and Zidane? Well he did that and more. The fighting Irish, probably not quite right, but can stand up in a dog fight!

Expected 100% from team mates and always gave 100%. Never flinched in a tackle and kept the passes simple.

Yup, as a mancity fan i can assure u this is fact. He may not the most skillful, but his leadership shows. Read about it once, how he setup the rules for the first team to follow and kept them in order.
As a Liverpool fan I hated roy keane .. then I heard him on the radio say it's when they stop hating you that's when you know you are losing your edge 😂😂 fantastic player had he gone to Liverpool in the early 90s I'm sure we wouldnt have had to wait until last year to land the prem

I watched a re-run of the game last week, it still sends shivers down my spine.

Only other game that came close was Roy against Holland at lansdowne Road in 2001, a Holland team that had de boer bros, David's, Bergkamp. overmars and more.

Keane's game is fascinating from a psychological perspective.
He admitted in an interview that his main driver was fear. Fear cripples most performances, but he somehow used it to his advantage.

That performance against juventus epitomises Roy Keane. A captain pushing his team mates to not give up and push 90 mins until they get the win. He’s everything united has lacked this past decade..
I was like 8 at the time but I'll never forget that game. The commentary was unreal... "Beckham, in towards Keane! Roy Keane with a captains goal for Manchester United! GAME ON!"
Especially when he knew he wouldnt play in the final.

Bruno does channel some of it but Keane was an absolute animal. I remember when friends at school would pretend to be this player and that player but no, I was Keane in the middle of the park.

What the video doesn't note is that in that Semi-final against Juventus, Keane got booked in the 27th minute and knew for most of the game that he wouldn't appear in the final. It's how he reacted to that and whatever he found in himself to do so is what was so astonishing.

Exactly the same fans against Keane, would have loved to have had him on the team at the time - you know you are good when opposite fans hate you. Fantastic teammate, and he had his flaws, and is still 1 of the best midfielders in footballing history

6:15 worth noting that Keane damn well knew he'd miss out on the final if he made that tackle, but he also knew that not making the tackle could mean they don't make the final at all. That's what made his display so selfless. Hands down the best captain of all time

Nah dude. the real performance came AFTER that tackle. He just rolled his sleeves and was ready to die than lose that night. Selflessness was HE KNEW he would miss the Final YET he wanted to win so that his team could go to final.
Jesper Blomqvist gave the ball away when Keane made that tackle on Zidane, then he got up and gave Blomqvist a bollocking for giving the ball away cheaply.
@Jack Lee I rate Keane highly and believe he’s very underrated in terms of his genuine skill compared to just his mentality and physicality. But in terms of captaincy I believe Puyol and Gerrard edge him just barely

99% of commentary on Keane focuses on his tackling, his enforcer role etc. I watched him many times and people forget how good he was at moving the ball, settling the tempo down, and allowing his team mates find positions to attack. He was brilliant in possession, almost always making the right choice with the pass.

He was a higly intelligent players, besides being aggressive, but people only know about the aggressive part nowadays.
Keane just ran the show in his prime. His performances for Ireland during the 2002 WC qualifying were spectacular. LVG voted him #1 as best player in world that year afterwards when Ireland beat Holland. He knew his football too.
Keane is one of the best midfielders in history, and possibly the best leader the game has ever seen. Great vid!!

Not quite true. I saw Duncan Edwards play. Duncan was the best of the best. Think of Keane, Zidane and Pele added all together and then think he wasn't anywhere near the player he would have gone on to become. The World lost not a one in a decade, not one in a generation but a one in a Century player - he was that special. In fact, beyond special, because everyone knew they could never ever compete with him. Think of an athlete doing 1 hour 50 for the marathon as a guide.

Everybody speaks about his attitude and agressiveness, no body speaks about the footballing skills he possessed. Hard to find a player with such determination and skillset in today's world
His ability to find a simple forward pass and get the ball into the final third is sorely underrated.
Thats because he was not an outstanding player. If you look at that Manu team there were some great players that you can remember specific things they did in a match, how they were great at doing x or y. Keane was consistent did what needed to be done but he did not shine match after match. In fact he was often overshadowed by his team mates.

I agree I find the closest thing to him today is henderson. A jack of all trades player but it’s his ability to keep everyone focused and the unselfish play that makes them stand out as great leaders. Keane even said Hendo would be a top player cause of his attitude when he managed him at Sunderland

One of my all time favourite players. And I realized it after he retired. Modern Football is missing players like Keane. He brought flavour and tension to every game. It was a pleasure to watch him. Just as it is now pleasure to watch him as a pundit. His personality brings the best out of everyone.

It always surprises me when the Premiership's Best XI is voted for, and the endless debates ensue about which two of Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes should be in midfield. First of all, none of these played no. 4, without which, as England demonstrated over and over again, a team won't win anything. And second, for those of us who followed football in the 1990s, the best player of those years, the player who bestrode the Premiership like a colossus, whose own team mates were only slightly less scared of him than his opponents, who made the hard men in Serie A look like cry babies, who wasn't the most skillful or talented, who didn't score the most goals or make the most assists, but who everyone in Britain recognised as the outstanding player of his generation, who drove his club team onto success after success beyond their talents, and who would have made minced meat of today's candidates for Best ever Premiership Team - was Roy Keane. He regularly got the upper hand of Vieira, his only rival. Scholes, who was many times more talented, played in his shadow. Gerrard and Lampard were terrified of him. For Liverpool it was Dalglish; for Man United it was Keane. Yes, he's an arsehole and a borderline psychopath, and nobody wants to remember the extent to which he dominated the Premier League, which was second only to his manager and fellow psychopath, Alex Ferguson. But Keane was, quite easily, the best player in the history of the Premiership.

His passing was so underated, he zipped passes into forwards feet, through lines, rarely ever passed backwards, always looked to play forward. That fact sometimes get lost amidst his reputation of aggression.
I agree. He was a top footballer as well as a ball winner and enforcer. Clough had Keane in a more attacking role where Fergie had him mixing his game.

See a lot of people talking about his aggression, determination and passion but nobody is talking about his supreme talent as a football, his passing was phenomenal (rarely giving the ball away) and his tackling. He is the best midfielder of his type the premier league has ever seen and he doesn't get enough credit for it. He was the best midfielder on the planet in terms of all round play between 98-2003.

@@PribumiNusantara45 Makelele was great, but he was a more limited and specialised player than Keane. As others have said, Vieira had comparable all-round ability but I don't think anyone else was similar from that era. It's completely wrong to think of Keane just as an enforcer or a tackler - he was the engine of the team going forward too, and a very smart and precise passer of the ball.
Gerard was also comparable when he came onto the scene, but was maybe the next generation. And he was a bit less tidy than Keane, I would say.

Remember ladies and gentlemen Wayne Rooney played with Paul Scholes for most of his career and with Roy Keane for two years where Keane was way past his prime. However Keane was still the best passer and player he’s ever played with. Standards.

@@ruijackson7697 long passing doesnt always mean a good pass. Rooneys words on keanes passing were pretty much that it was always firm, the right pace, easy to control, always the right side of the receiver. I would add that more often than not they were forward too

What a player he was
One of the very best of all time , never give the ball away ,great reader of the game, mobile, good tackle and kept it simple . Scored important goals and a great captain .

To add to that. Not just simple. He knew how to play a line breaking pass quickly when needed. A lot of midfielders nowadays just show off with their passing range when they don't need to do it, but when it matters they don't know how to play the right pass.
Keane kept it simple most of the time, but had the intelligence and vision to hurt the opponent with his passing when needed.
He'd would also make great late runs into the box and score, I'd say he was a very very good finisher.. You could probably play him as a box to box next to a DM and he would score you a lot of goals, but he was mainly that DM.
Great football brain, great competitive brain overall, and a great athlete to execute all that.

Before this starts, I'm hoping he goes into how under appreciated Keano was for his technique and athletic ability. People leave that out to talk about his mental strength, ball winning and work ethic. This man had a clean first touch and passed and shot very well. It was the creative passing and vision that he lacked compared to Scholes, but the touch and pass was always good with Keano, along with having excellent stamina and balance, as well as decent pace, agility and strength. Great player. We need a player like him right now.

I'm a Liverpool fan and always will be. But when I was playing football with my club. I would watch Roy Keane especially. I would watch how he got the ball and quick passes he would get free inside the box and get really important goals. It does not matter what club Roy played for its the way he wanted to win was why i watched and tried to learn. He was the best passer of the ball in my opinion. Made the game look so bloody easy that it really is. Steven Gerrard was great but if I was asked who was the best I'd pick Roy Keane all day long. And I bet you even Steven Gerrard would say Roy wad the guy he would look at for clues to play good. Now he is a pundit and people watch and listen and even look up you tube to learn how he made a difficult game look easy. He was able to run all game pass all game and make himself tough. There 3 things you need to succeed. So he was brilliant 👏

I think young players and generations should be watching more videos (or games because there aren't many Keane highlights out there) of Keane and stop wa*king on Scholes, Pirlo, Xavi etc because, let's face it 99,9% can't play like them and yet they still want too.
Keane was a very simple player, but a world class one too, because he knew what to do at the right time.

As a CFC fan I think he was the best, baddest, most dominant midfielders ever! He was the heart and soul of the team and you could see him driving the team on every game. A true icon and role model for any young player..... and he is the most enjoyable commentator around today ;-)

Some people don't know what specific country in the British Isles players are from when they come through the English Club system. Also some people choose to play for a country other than the one of their birth. Not Keane of course but many other. Of course some of the best and most exciting British Isles players were not from England or did not play for England even if they qualified. Ryan Giggs, Kenny Dalgliesh, Mark Hughes, Ian Rush, Pat Jennings, Dennis Law and of course George Best to name just a few. I am sure I have missed many other legends but I think I covered at least one from each of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic

United won the treble with Keane in the middle. Every great team needs a player controlling the tempo and Keane was that player. BBC pundit Alan Hansen, when asked stated, "Keane would be my first name on the Man Utd team sheet.'"
His leadership, passing, drive and effort puts him on that team sheet first ahead of players with high skill levels.

@@kush5904 Harry Mcguire hasn't looked great at Man Utd but he earned his reputation by being standout at sheffield utd and helped leicester win the league, add that to his world cup performance, making him one of the best centre-backs in the league (just like roy was one of the best centre midfielders in the league) and that he is in his prime and was relatively injury free is the reason.

I'm an AC Milan fan but I remember how good roy keane was and how good he was is world fucking class. Probably my favourite non Milan player I miss. Some people compare him to gattuso because of his volatility but he was so so much more than that, great passer could dominate games, best captain iv ever seen even better than maldini as a captain. Its a pitty he didn't get a second chance at appearing in the champions league final and he is known throughout Europe for his qualities but maybe not as much is south America etc because his lack of world cup appearances. If he had stayed with Ireland in 2002 world cup I think Ireland could have done very well.
At his best (late 90s to 2003) keane was probably one of the best players in the world, I can't emphasis how good of a player he was and he was the main reason that united team won what they did,

Cheers for the answer! Yeah he was pheonomenal in his day. I believe the main reason that many of those United players from the early 2000s/late 90s aren't as celebrated globally is because so many didnt perform on the international stage.

Look at the come back hat trick against Atletico for example. The man has an incredible work ethic ever since he was a little boy and has incredible tenacity and dedication. He was incredible. United have to play two players in the centre of the park to try to do the job he did on his own and even then they aren't capable. He would run games with his passing, protect the defence with his tackling, and control the whole tempo of the team. As I say, United play two players in the position he occupied, and together they can't control the temp, control the game or protect the defence. He was a monster of a footballer.

Keane was a tremendous player, with courage, effort and that never say die attitude. If you didn't pull your weight, he let you know. My late father in law used to say, "That bloody Roy Keane, what a player."
Keane is simplicity personified, he did the simple stuff incredibly well. his real genius though is the ability to direct and enforce constant performance on the field, anyone dropped below the bar keane was ready to tell you, Class player.

Keane was a powerhouse and would be the biggest single reason for Man U's many league titles. The guy was relentless, fearless and dominated the field. He did not have the skill of a Zidane but he surpassed him in many other regards.

Love his no messing punditry too. To the point, everyone is in no doubt about what he thinks, And he has earned that right from his playing days. Many others opinions don't matter, but when Roy talks you listen. He knows what he is on about and his work ethic was second to none.
As much as I dislike United. You have to admire the relentless determination to win that they had. Never gave up, always gave it 100% until the final whistle and had the winning attitude teams need to succeed.
And that treble season epitomised what Fergie's United was all about and that never give in attitude with all the comebacks and last minute goals all season long.

How aggressive he was over shadows how good of a player he was. Great technique a great eye for goal but he didn't have to score goals in that Man U team. His determination was unquestioned his passing range was 1st class, heading, ball winning & his drive. Unbelievable player
