the thing with the statues on the cathedral is actually quite the mind blowing revelation, I just assumed they just mindlessly sprinkled some of Dark Souls II´s assets throughout Dark Souls III without much thought, but looks like they actually went back to some leftover ideas from that game it felt also super random to just see Gilligans corpse lying there in the profaned capital, I wish they elaborated more on this, because even with this the profaned capital still feels very unfinished in a way
It blew my mind the first time I found the pillars on the cathedral. Granted DS2 has lots of random lore hidden within the game so love the game the most from a lore perspective.
No idea why but I hadn't clocked that dialogue Maughlin makes re the Blue Sentinels - thats such an interesting perspective on them that gives them far more depth.
im so happy to see you here. This channel needs more attention. I mean how did no one see the lothric pillars in heide? SmoughTown I think you should give this guy a massive shoutout.
Mind blowing revelations. I can't believe the hint to lothric that is so crazy. I wish vaati would shout this out or on Reddit this is a big lore find. People always act like DS2 has no lore but bam, look at this
I actually buy this theory. DS3 as it is is a weird bastardization of the original lore/worldbuilding by Okano after Miyazaki took over. I believe Lothric and the Profaned Capital ("city of sin") were fully meant to connect to Heide and Volgen in the "first draft", so to speak. Wolnir (called Yhorm) was meant to be the ruler of the city. I also believe that the Cathedral of the Deep and the Way of White in general were meant to have connections to Lindelt/Shulva.
I would've loved to have played through the Captiol of Sin(Profaned Capitol) with more obvious connections to Heide and Volgen. I also agree that Cathedral of the Deep and the Way of White were meant to have connections to Lindelt/Shulva.
In regards to Heide and Lothric connections, in DS3 its pretty much stated outright that the Drang knights, who came to Lothric from across the sea, brought with them the practice of linking the fire. Heide being part of Drangleic, it isn't a huge stretch that what the Drang actually brought to Lothric was their religion and culture, the linking of the Fire being just one of several core beliefs. The 3 pillars of society, the scholar, the priest, and the knight, plus the secret 4th pillar, the hunter would be one of these. Drangleic immigrants played a huge role in establishing Lothric, providing the cultural basis from which the kingdom would be built around. It's even a strong possibility that Lothric was in fact founded by the Drang, probably either in or in close proximity to Lordran. Definitely both built atop the same mountain range). Further reinforcing the connection between Drangleic and the founding of Lothric is the shared practice of dragon-riding. Drakes are still present in DS2, within the boundaries of Drangleic. Whether drakes were also found in Lothric still, as they were in DS, or if they had to be reintroduced by the Drang, Lothric was once famed as home of Dragon Riders (technically drakes), something that didn't seem to exist prior to Drangleic. Pure speculation, but since the Drakeblood knights were formed sometime during the DS2 timeline, and are found in archdragon peak in ds3, I think that the practice of Dragon riding was taught by The Nameless King. NK has possible ties to Drangleic, as it is here we first here of Faram, the warrior nation who worshipped a war God of the same name. However, as was often the case in real history, the same God was often known by different names to different peoples. Faram probably wasn't his original name. Another big piece of lore tying Drangleic to founding of Lothric is Aldia. Aldia is pretty much unambiguously the "First Scholar" that created and taught the Soul Stream spell, and was an early mentor to Prince Lothric, teaching him to reject the flame. This places Aldia in Lothric at the establishment of the Grand Archives. Given that the Scholar is one of the 3 pillars, this establishes both the revered status of Aldia within Lothric as "First Scholar," and the importance of the Grand Archives to establishing legitimacy to Lothric's kingdom. A kingdom built upon 3 pillars would need all 3 of those pillars to be firmly established to provide the foundation upon which the kingdom was to be built. The library and the scholars within, the dragon riders, skilled warriors each and all mounted on flying weapons of mass destruction, and their priests, who's blessings made the knights all but immortal, were all necessary to the founding of Lothric. The major hole in this theory I can think of is that Vendrick seemed to have little use for religious practice, with the priesthood of the Way of White getting little to no support from the Crown. It seems that it was only after the Undead Curse emerged and brought doom to Drangleic did people turn to faith, out of desperation. So it wasn't really a pillar of Drangleic, which was otherwise split between the martial Vendrick and scholarly Aldia.
The connection of Heides and Lothric for me is that Lotrich was build from the ruins of old reings, one of those being Heides, just like some old theories that points out Heides been built from the fall of old reigns, this old reign probably being Anor Londo. This was one of the big themes of DS2 at the time. DS3 made some retcons, but if you look at DS3 as a fragmented world with pieces of reigns from diferents eras mix together through time and space, the original theories about Drangleic and Heide being in the same spot that once was Anor Londo still makes sense. I'm pretty sure that was pretty much confirmed on the DS2 days, that Drangleic was in the same spot that once was Anor Londo, and only when DS3 cames out that everything got confused with the hints of Drangleic being in a distant land and the presence of Anor Lond near Lothric and the interview with Miyazaki saying something of it been in the other side of the world or something(?)
Could this imply that Sullyvahn was "infected" by greed after finding the capital and it's "flame of sin" then? The sword could be the manifestation of this act.
@@ChannelYoshimitsu I feel like they were trying to reference the Sacred/Profane dichotomy as well as Sin and the Cross (Sacred Flame and Profaned Flame are DS3 pyromancies) (There's a crucified werewolf and Xanthous ashes in Irithyll dungeon) [random footnote: pyromancy is jujutsu; ju is 10 is X is eggs]) [random footnote 2 (unrelated but spicy): Londor = Lande d'or = Golden Land Similar to Orlando becoming Orland (Heaven) at the end of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6)
HE HAS RETURNED!!! I have a question should we be using DS2 to explain DS1 and 3 lore. The fragmented and chaotic development history as well as the fact that Miyazaki wasn't directly overseeing the project as well as many changes to characters in DS2 and reversions in DS3 makes me hesitant to want to use lore from DS2.
I believe yes, we should use DS2 to explain the lore of DS1 and DS3. Many key lore elements are revealed in DS2. In an interview, Mr. Miyazaki has stated that he does not reveal the entire story to his staff but instead will implement story ideas from his staff to create a more living chaotic story. Or something like that.
Very interesting, the presence of headless knight statues in both Heide and Lothric seems like too much of a similarity to be a coincidence. The Dark Souls: Archthrones mod connects Heide's Tower of Flame and the Profaned Capitol as well, so I wonder if the developers of it were inspired by this video or came to same conclusions themselves?
Love your work, bro. Haven't watched yet but I wanted to state that volgen is a Dutch infinitive verb meaning "to follow", and in DS3 the shield of the volgen falconers is found near Farron. I know Farron Followers are called Farron Revenants or something in the JP script but I still think the former is a potential reference to succession/heirdom whereas the latter is a reference to "the trace" which is a concept from Derrida (see also: Ciaran's Gold and Dark Silver Tracer). Sorry I started to digress, basically I think Volgen and Farron are connected, perhaps a bunch of volgen sellswords joined the Undead Legion at some point.
Interesting. Never knew Volgen means "to follow" in Dutch. Very interesting. Cool theory of the Volgen and Farron connection. Always enjoy your theories as well friend. :)
Interesting take. Personally I don't think The Profaned Capital is a renamed Volgen, it's more a case that it is a city that studies and practices the dark, with the nature of dark being inherently greedy as well as the themes of eating. Logan's scroll being there is likely due to the study of Homing Soul Mass, which IIRC mentions that its nature is similar to the dark, hence why there's the dark spell Pursuers/Affinity that behaves much like it. Heide's Tower of Flame being linked to Lothric Castle is more due to Gwynevere as there are Divine Blessings scattered about the level, and the three/four pillars of Heide you pointed out just reinforces their link and traditions including the headless knight sacrifice. Regarding the Profaned Capital as a whole there is just so much stuff going off there that it is hard to know what its purpose is other than a place for Fromsoft to dump their ideas and items that they couldn't put anywhere else in the game. Lokeysouls has an interesting take on the Profaned Capitol, I recommend giving it a read to see if it fills in the gaps to some of your theories. I mean for example, there are a lot of eastern weapons there and Volgen is supposed to be located in the west. That's not to say that items from the east can't appear in the west, it's just that Volgen and the east are the opposite ends to one another.
Interesting theory and take on the Profaned Capitol. One thing that I'll disagree with though is regarding Gwynevere. I don't believe she is a connector between Heide and Lothric. With the Onislayer Greatarrow and Onislayer Greatbow in the Profaned Capitol, I always assumed it was due to the East attacking the Capitol. But that's just my take. Lokeysouls definitely has interesting theories of the lore for sure. Love that they're also using the Japanese text for lore theories.
@@ChannelYoshimitsu Interesting, but why? What does he believe in? And where does it differ from Aldrich's beliefs? The two appear to belong to different sects. Or are they secretly working together to bring it all down? And can you elaborate on Astora? Edit: Excuse me if that was too many questions, but I'm really curious as to what exactly he wants, or even is. Corvian-tree hybrid? Corrupted human? Some other class of being closer to the Darklurker? All we really know is that he was born in the Painted World, went to Volgen, and found the Profaned Flame, and it all went downhill from there.
Zandroe might be Xander/Xandroe. From like to use the letter/number X. (CROSSbreed, ANNEX key, X anthous King, Crucifixion Woods etc.) The symbol of avarice, "a punishment for sin", evokes Velka's role of "defining sin" and "meteing punishment."
