I did some thing similar. I cleaned out a few orchid pot and orchid roots. And actually did soak them. And thank you for letting me know about the salts. :) Thank you!!!
Please do a separate video sometime on growing Sedirea japonica and its varieties: "Minmaru Shima" "Minmaru" and "Seigyokumaru". I have had a hard time so far finding trustworthy information on growing these orchids so far. Many thanks in advance !
Hi Danny. Soaking leca in tap or RO water will help dislodge rotting roots that otherwise be held by weight of the beads. Being that Leca is fairly buoyant will allow debris to float away easier. But my preference is RO water where you can't leave anything behind if theres nothing there, or diluting from high concentration to lower. Thank you 👍
Some rice under your Epsom salt will also help. You could put it in a knee-hi pantyhose, or some other material with holes or what we in The South do-just a layer straight in the jar. Don’t need a lot-just cover the bottom one grain in depth.
Likely gypsum if you are using RO, the calcium binds with sulfate and falls out of solution. Calcium nitrate isn't too soluble too... Also differences in CEC of the medium also determines how much salt buildup you will get, so does the pH of the medium. To remove a bit more salt, can't you use very mild nutrient solution with pH 5.5?? Works perfect when growing tomatoes and avoids osmotic shock ;p
Oncidium miltassia hybrid (yellow colour) is a cool grower or hot grower i just ordered it on Amazon waiting for delivery and your reply cuz i need to know weather i can grow them in led light or in south facing window with natural sunlight😁😀
Hi Dani, You didn’t mention sphagnum moss, but I have read and observed that moss is more prone to salt build-up, so may need to be flushed more often.
With a gain of salt!!!! Hahahaha, I am so happy I caught this one at 6am!! Gonna keep that one all day hahaha my kinda joke's.. My husband always laughs about how often you and I say similar things.. thanks for the video good stuff in this one.
My Monte elagante is starting to smell,o my the fragrance is just waooow, and it is also not mild,i grow my orchids outside and whenever i walk in my outside garden,i feel the fragrance of it in the air,its amazing and so nice, smells like roses and also has little spicy but floral tinge to it,and it has only two flower,so when this orchid has 10 flowers, it is going to be so perfumy...just waow
Hi, not sure what you refer to, so I'll guess. When organic media decomposes it becomes too acidic for orchid roots. When in good condition it's slightly acidic, which is ok. I don't recall ever saying orchids don't like slightly acidic media, I do know I said media can get too acidic and that's bad. There is a difference though :)
you're so smart. and your voice is so soothing. thanks.

great explanation... lovely pink pots...
Lovely video Danni!

Thanks Danni, good explanation of the how's and why's. I was starting to get confused about flushing and which is a better way. :)

I flush in the same way (gave up the clay pots, I just can't lol), I am fertilizing more carefully the moss orchids, they are more fragile anyway.

But how do you flush orchids in Sphagnum Moss.
No need for flushing if not over fertilising 😊
I flush my phalaenopsis to avoid built ups.
Why did a horticulturist here say that orchids love "acidic" media, quite different from your unscientific view?
