A few months ago I bought an orchid at ikea and she was really dry and had rotten roots. I followed your videos and removed the dried and brown roots and the spikes even if they were really beautiful. I did it a month ago and now she has pretty green roots and grew a baby leaf. Thank you very much cause thanks to you I learnt a lot
Lils, I do believe that there is a pattern to Orchids purchased at IKEA. I bought my first orchid at IKEA two years ago. He was tiny and in horrible shape. Yes, I said he, I named him Ike after his birthplace, IKEA. I realize that it was not a very creative name, but I felt so bad for him as he looked up at me with one wilted little bloom. I took him home with the sense that I may just be his only hope for a chance at survival. Even though I had killed numerous orchids in the past, I was determined that this orchid would not face the same fate. I searched UA-cam for the expert to answer each of my questions. What I found, were a group of individuals who assumed that I knew what I was doing, used supplies that I would never be able to find at my local Home Depot, and more than likely, would have thrown away my poor little orchid who I knew wanted to live and bloom another day. It was on that same day that I found Danny(MOG), who by the way, I wear her sweatshirt proudly.I started with the first video and made my way through each of the basic videos that I needed to know on how to rescue my little Ike. I started with repotting him because when I looked at his roots, many of them where already dead and the few that were left I knew were destined for the same fate if I didn’t change his potting medium. With Danny at my side (through her video’s) I I cleaned, removed and sprayed with hydrogen peroxide. Next step, a pot that I first saw on Repot Me, that my Home Depot actually carried. I followed Danny’s directions using a Orchid Planting Mix. Two years later, he has been repotted because he has grown in leaps and bounds. His two little wilted leaves are now six leaves with a new leaf growing as I type this comment. His blooms have been too many to count because sometimes while he has one beautiful bloom spike in place, he will show off and put out another spike of flowers. Ike just loves his window and all of his attention. My family now trusts me and has bought me beautiful Orchids for Mother’s Day and my most recent gift was an another Phalaenopsis Orchid who was grown by a grown named Debbie. So as you can imagine, this orchid is Debbie, and my two orchids that I received for Mother’s Day are Phil and Philly. I am taking liberties with names, but I am having fun loving my Orchids, but I owe it all to Danny. You should really take a look at her site and find a treasure or two for yourself. (teespring.com). I love my sweatshirt with a front pocket and a hood...so well made. My son gave it to me for Christmas and announced that the MOG really stands for (MY ORCHIDS GROW)! A little insider joke from someone who knew first hand of the fate of past orchids in my life. ☺️
What beautiful stories. 😊 This sounds so similar to my journey. I am so lucky to have stumbled on Danny's videos. It's been an amazing year of learning and orchid hobby fun. 😊
A new covid hobby... thank you for showing me that I CAN grow an orchid. I received one for mothers day and with your help it is healthier now then it was when received! So much so that I have ventured to purchase another. My first was in a very small pot, so it needs repotting; the roots have gone crazy growing, even the air roots. On to your other videos to be sure I don't jeopardize my current success. Long ago I had received a huge beautiful orchid at a very elegant wedding and proceeded to kill it... I still to this day lament my ignorance. I shall not repeat my mistake now that I have found you. ; )
I was up early this morning after watching this video. I inspected one of my mother in law’s orchids ( she passed away) , just discovered that I have a couple of new branches on a half dried up flower spike ! I’m new on orchid growing so I’m watching all of your old videos on orchid care for beginners . Thank you so much for all the infos. You have a wealth of knowledge.
This is an incredibly helpful video for first-time orchid owners. I just received an orchid yesterday and thought it was dead because the flowers were droopy and the stem was dry and dead. Hopefully I can bring it back to life by watching these steps.
Loving it!!! Thank you Danny!!! They are my favorite orchids and I help my mom taking care of the one I gave her, thanks to your videos! The best channel of orchids! Kind regards from Colombia 😄
I follow the saying "If it's brown, cut it down... if it's green, don't be mean" when it comes to cutting or not cutting the bloom spikes on certain orchids that have a chance of branching or forming keikies .....
I have insects in the earth of my orchid. They both look healthy. I have made up a mixture of washing up liquid and apple cider vinegar. Should mention I am on the west coast of Ireland. Presently they are on a window sill with plenty of light. Your video very helpful.
both my flower stems died and the leafs are limp, not yellow, only happened since I re-potted it last year. I'll follow your vid and hope I can bring it back, I've had it for about 2yrs and it always had big beautiful white flowers. Heading over to watch your destroy orchids & how to fix them. these videos are so helpful.
Hello! I’m from Puerto Rico and orchids are my favorite plants. And my grandmother had beautiful ones strategically place right outside her window so that when she ate her meals she could appreciate them. She has passed away and to keep her memory I make sure to obtain them. Thank you so much for all the great info you provide us. I now have a better understanding of how to care for them . Thank you so much???
I live in zone 5 and keep my pals on a windowsill (southeast facing)... each spring I begin to leave my windows open. The cool nights in my zone trigger one of my phalaenopsis to begin pushing a spike. By mid summer, I get a luscious cascade of giant, white, moth orchid blooms. Another orchid goes into a death spiral the second a draft hits it. Yet another just does its normal vegetative growth. All three are rescued phals but one is a mini (death spiral), one is a moth (healthy, blooming) and one is a mystery (healthy, not blooming) phalaenopsis that I got after it’s blooms had all dropped. Keeping them healthy is key, everything else happens when it’s ready. Just more evidence that there is no hard and fast rules with orchids... you really have to go on a journey with each one... both the best and worst part of keeping orchids.
One of my phals keeps growing keikis instead of reblooming. When i got it a couple years ago from a friend, it had two green flower spikes that were cut below when the flowers were. Not too long after I got it, they both started growing new plants (both have their own pots now). I removed one spike and the remaining one started growing a third baby just a couple weeks ago. I’ll probably remove the spike when the baby is ready to be on its own. The mother plant is very healthy and continuously grows new leaves and roots even when reproducing, but I want it to grow flowers for the first time since I got it years ago.
I was going to cut my flower spike as the flowers I bought my Phal with faded but it actually shot out new branches and I’m about to have two new flushes, even though it’s 70 degrees F or higher in my house at all times 😅
There are some tips in order to avoid snails: you can make a ground coffee barrier around your pot. Snails will not go through it. And of course you can use the plants we use in our vegetable gardens to repel them. Plant an onion, garlic, thyme or parsley, they hate the smell. This is how we keep our gardens and vegetable gardens free of snails and slugs. They are useful also against some pests, so it is quite recommendable to plant some of these in our garden,
Do you cut off those ‘burned’ roots from the old medium? Thanks so much for addressing this. I have two orchids i didnt know how to care for, for the last 2-3 yrs. They are doing much better now that I’ve found your channel, and i have also adopted several more, plus some suffering discount mini phals that are coming back to life! Thank you for your concise and incredibly informative videos!!
Hello Danny, Your videos are very informative. I am thinking about repotting my orchids in semihydro since bark chips dries out fast in the top layer. But the winter here can get colder. Is it possible for me to use semi hydro with some adjustments? Is there a minimum temperature limit where semihydro can be used? Thank you.
Hi, I love your videos and have learned so much from them. I have a local nursery which has a "mature orchid" table. They're simply orchids not in bloom or that will be done blooming soon that are sold at half price which is where I've been buying a lot of my orchids and having great success with them. Most varieties are labeled but like a lot of places, many phals aren't. I bought 2 beautiful moth orchids there a couple of months ago, one still blooming, and would like to try to identify the variety. Can you recommend a good resource to use for this? Thanks! And thanks so much for the videos. They've given me the information and confidence to try some varieties I might not have before. I seem to have been bitten by the orchid bug these days 😊
I bought an Orchid from Lowe's (was on sale) & I've had it for going on 3yrs now & since I bought it -it has never bloomed. It did have a flower spike when I bought it but no flowers & it was brown so I cut it but it's never bloomed since then lol I'm giving it extra TLC now this year & I see more roots & she grew a new leaf at the beginning of spring but no flower spike. Some day I will know what color flowers she blooms Lol
I like to just leave the flower spike. I do this because the orchid puts so much time and energy into creating it. I let it suck all the nutrients from the flower spike till it's dry then cut it off. And if I don't want a secondary spike I just break it off. Just my preference.
Very informative easily explained .I'm sure you answered this? B4 a phal with beautiful blooms "the Panda " should I repot and will that compromise the blooms very tight in the small pot.Thank you.
About two years ago I started to properly care for my phalaenopsis orchids. All of them are now very healthy (thanks to you) but there are two that are like on FIRE. First have white flowers with magenta vines and the second one is just magenta. Both of them bloomed this winter and had 6-7 flowers. Now the viney one is blooming again (spike brunch out) and have about 12 buds. The magenta after it first blooming (I mean this winter) create another spike, which both have 6-7 flowers. Now it create yet another spike but this time it branch out, so it have about 22 buds total. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Is it possible for phalaenpsis to flower it self to death? I mean it is old orchid and it have (in)visible pattern at the tip of his leaves, so I suspect one of his parents was schilleriana, but still.
Hi Danni, I thoroughly enjoy your channel. I'm a newbie so I have a lot to learn. My husband bought me a phal last year for mother's day. I place it on a shaded window sill. It looks healthy but I noticed a white line on the top leaf. The line is now turning yellow and I don't know what it is. I see specks on other leaves as well but they otherwise look ok. Can you advise what I need to do?
Hi I've been following you for a while now. You've been really helpful my orchid is now 3 years old and for the first time I think it's going to bloom. But it has spikes all over. 4 between the 2 ND leave (3 on one side 1 on the other) and 4 or 5 all up the down the stem.
Hey Dani! I’ve been a huge fan of your videos for a couple months now. Orchids have always been my favorite flowers, and you gave me the confidence to grow them myself!! I just have a quick question. What’s your opinion on moving orchids around? I want to take my two orchids with me to college in the fall, but I don’t want to stress them out either (I have a no ID phal and a Bratonia Shelob Tolkien). Thank you for all of your videos!!
moving them will cause stress for sure, but there are some steps that you can do to make the orchids less stressed (matching temperature, same watering schedule, etc.) but both plants are pretty resilient, and should adapt pretty quickly.
At 2:16 I see a web on your orchid... Is that the result of spider mites? I realize this is an older video, but I'm concerned one of my orchids now has spider mites and wondering if what I saw on yours is something I should look out for. Thanks!
Hi Dani, I have loved watching your videos, so we'll done and educational!! I have a question: I have a beautiful phal that has been blooming continuously for the past 5 years with only one short period where a spike bent badly from the weight and broke. I feel that I should repot it since it has been 5 yrs, but I'm not sure when. Do I cut off the spikes, or repot while it has its blooms, or just keep waiting. I've been waiting for a couple of years. I do not fertilize it either, so should I be giving it some fertilizer so it doesn't use all of its nutrients? I love my phal and I'm worried that it hasn't had a rest. :( Please advise.
My very first Phal reproduces off of a node on a healthy flower spike with no flowers! The new branch is just about to bloom! So happy. What does it mean if it is also producing new leaves 🤔
One of my phalaenopsis complex hybrid is growing another flower spike right next to the previous one that just dropped it’s flowers, in the space between the same leaves.
Thanks for the review Dani! I’m now adding species phalaenopsis to my collection of hybrids. Do you treat newly purchased species phals in the same way as hybrids? Frequently I find species phalaenopsis are potted in moss rather than bark or other medium. My temptation is to repot them in bark (my preferred medium). Do you agree? Thanks for your insights! ;p
Hi Dani. I just switched to semi hydro, and I want to know if you let the leca dry out a bit also with phalaenopsis. Or do you jus make sure it never dries out? If you can help that would be great.
I’ve just got a mini phalaenopsis orchid and I am a beginner at this. My plant has dropped all its unopened buds within 5 days. In one of your videos, you mentioned to repot a new plant; when should I do this? I noticed most of the aerial roots have dried up, should I cut them away? For roots that are brown in mid section, should I cut the rotten part away? Would appreciate your advice.
I bought a small orchid last year, the leaves split and died off so I removed them after new leaves started to sprout this year. Only the new leaves are smaller than the original, I have two flower spikes 1 which has flowered and the other is growing from the top centre which I think you referred to as a terminal spike. Do I need to do anything in particular or just let it go and see what happens with it. Also the flower is a different colour than what it flowered when I bought it, much prettier
Ok so I have a pretty weird phalaenopsis mini. it has stem growing from the crown. The crown is sort of tilting to one side. It also has 3 flower stems in total which grow completely regardless of the usual rules and another stem is starting to grow next to another healthy one. Did my orchid grow in chernobyl or what is this xD
quick question, one of my orchids is growing a new arial roots, growing a new stem, and about to bloom but i checked her roots and their is alot of squishy rotten ones , should i repot it or wait for the new stem grow fully? Another one of my orchids grew a new stem sideways & i’m scared to move it & break it , what should i do 😭😭😭
Im kind of a beginner, Im interested in what kind of light you use inside? Where i live there isnt much light and Im worried my Phalaenopsis Will suffer from it :c Would be Great If I could get some kind of light system for it (and other plants )
I have a good sized keiki on my orchid. When and how should it be removed a given its own pot. It has even bloomed itself this spring, so I know it is time for it to "move out" and get her own place, but how? I can send a photo if that would help. I am afraid to cut it off of Mom.
The top leaf of my Phalaenopsis got damaged/burned during a recent house fumigation for termites. Unfortunately I didn’t move the plant far enough from the house. Should I cut off this damaged leaf?
Dani please help me figure out what I'm doing wrong. I bought 3 new phals in January and repotted them in bark (two were in moss and one in bark) and I did sprayed them with hydrogen peroxide and removed dead roots. Within 1-2 months they all died slowly. I didn't use fertilizer and I water them with tap water. They had good roots but when they started dying I un-potted to check and noticed the roots were slowly dying and leaves were falling off. Then I Bought one in March and repotted in a bark and moss mix and since it also lost most of its roots (there are 5 short top roots now) and the 5 leaves have drooped but still very green. I then repotted it in moss only and started watering with distilled water (Although the one phal I've had for two years I've been watering with tap and nothing happened until i repotted it and it eventually died too). The droopy has been like that to present day. What did I do wrong to the other four repot and what can I do for this last one. I like phals and want them in my life but can't afford to keep buying them! Help!
Hi, I actually answered your question in today's q and a since it is a longer answer, so hope you'll watch today's video :) oh ps: don't fertilize newly repotted orchids, let them adjust and start growing roots properly first ;)
I only found that seedling pot once and after repotting that orchid died. Has this ever happened to others? Could it have affected it”s ability to soak water?
Hi Danny, loving your video. Could u join all your repot videos together to make a super long repotting video? Super Asmr 💙💛❤💜 ps dont speed up the actual rootbcleaning x
Hi, not really sure what is happening from your description, but do type in the search bar 'missorchidgirl orchid infection' and you'll find all my videos on leaf infections :D
Does anyone know how long limp leaves should take to plump up and become firm again? I slacked on my watering and now many of my leaves are limp. I don't want to water too too much if it takes say, a week for the leaves to get firm again...
My summers get as high as 38ºC the hottest hours of some days, I manage to grow some orchids succesfully, I put them on a protected place where they are more humid and cool and sometimes (almost never) I put the plants inside the house to protect them from the heat. I grow encyclias (radiata, bractescens, Cordigera) epidendrum (radicans, Ibaguense) , and maxillarias (tenuifolia, and densa) successfully, well the maxillaria densa struggles a little on summer.
I have cool winters (almost always above 6-8ºC the coldest nights) and springs and atumn between 13-30ºC Ps: below 8ºC I put my orchids inside except the epidendrum (my orchid had never suffered cold burnings)

My Phal now has a baby leaf! Thanks to your videos :)
my dream is to have summer bloomers in the shape yours are in! they look so lush and healthy!! xoxo L.
Thank you! I have been curious about loss of flowers and this cycle now makes sense. Your explanations are so helpful!
Hey Danni, some us out here like watching the whole repotting process, just saying. Thanks again for another informative video as always. God bless!😇
You are awesome. My husband got me an orchid plant for mothers day and I absolutely love it. I am learning so much from your channel. Namaste.
I actually love the roots the most, I just love their asymmetry and how cool they look.
This is an incredibly helpful video for first-time orchid owners. I just received an orchid yesterday and thought it was dead because the flowers were droopy and the stem was dry and dead. Hopefully I can bring it back to life by watching these steps.
Very informative video! I finally have the knack for keeping phals alive. HOORAY! Thanks for your videos.
Loving it!!! Thank you Danny!!! They are my favorite orchids and I help my mom taking care of the one I gave her, thanks to your videos! The best channel of orchids! Kind regards from Colombia 😄

Well phels wont grow spikes if it hasnt got a good invorement you have a perfectly healths phal also youre very lucky!
Hi Dani. what brand of leca so you use with your orchids?
Awesome video for a beginner like myself... thank you!
Oh wow! It looks like you'll be rewarded for your 3 years of orchid love with a TON of flowers! Ahh it's going to look amazing ! :D
Thanks!
Awesome information thank you😘
Hi Dani, I have loved watching your videos, so we'll done and educational!!
Hi Danni .Do you have any grammatophyllums and if you do can you do a care tip tutorial?
I'm not a beginner anymore can I still watch ;-)
@@Schiffon 😁
Thanks for the review Dani! I’m now adding species phalaenopsis to my collection of hybrids. Do you treat newly purchased species phals in the same way as hybrids? Frequently I find species phalaenopsis are potted in moss rather than bark or other medium. My temptation is to repot them in bark (my preferred medium). Do you agree? Thanks for your insights! ;p

Hi Dani. I just switched to semi hydro, and I want to know if you let the leca dry out a bit also with phalaenopsis. Or do you jus make sure it never dries out? If you can help that would be great.
Very interesting thank you for the help, information and sharing
Very helpful!
I always cut the spike as you recommend and never have grown a new spike ... I left one spike and already re blooming...
Would appreciate your advice.
very nice info thanks xox
can you say more about terminal spike phaelionopsis, please?
perfect timing
I really want to try semihydro, but can’t find any... so disappointed. I’ll celebrate your 100k more than you!
When is the best time to report orchids when when nothing is wrong with it?
MissOrchidGirl can you do a video on how to produce keikis? :) Or cloning an orchid.
Thank you, I always enjoy your videos.
quick question, one of my orchids is growing a new arial roots, growing a new stem, and about to bloom but i checked her roots and their is alot of squishy rotten ones , should i repot it or wait for the new stem grow fully?
Another one of my orchids grew a new stem sideways & i’m scared to move it & break it , what should i do 😭😭😭
Hi danni. what do you think about keiki pastes?
Bravo!
Thanks bella
Im kind of a beginner, Im interested in what kind of light you use inside? Where i live there isnt much light and Im worried my Phalaenopsis Will suffer from it :c
Would be Great If I could get some kind of light system for it (and other plants )
after you repot the orchid do you water it right after or how long after
I have a good sized keiki on my orchid. When and how should it be removed a given its own pot. It has even bloomed itself this spring, so I know it is time for it to "move out" and get her own place, but how? I can send a photo if that would help. I am afraid to cut it off of Mom.
Hi, my latest video talks about that, maybe it will help ☺️ Here it is in case you missed it ua-cam.com/video/_Mxr6Gqt7Gg/v-deo.html
How clean the leaves?
My phalaenopsis orchid has two flower spikes on it then it stopped growing in when into a vegetative stage
Thank you so much!!
Is it okay to use a regular pot that have drainage holes on the bottom? Would you still take care of it the same?
Help!
Bijou Bijou I would start to use a fertiliser with these, they need to be fed. Check out Dani’s other videos for recommendations.
Hi, I actually answered your question in today's q and a since it is a longer answer, so hope you'll watch today's video :) oh ps: don't fertilize newly repotted orchids, let them adjust and start growing roots properly first ;)
What do you do about those roots sticking out of the growing material?
I only found that seedling pot once and after repotting that orchid died. Has this ever happened to others? Could it have affected it”s ability to soak water?
Hi Danny, loving your video. Could u join all your repot videos together to make a super long repotting video? Super Asmr 💙💛❤💜 ps dont speed up the actual rootbcleaning x
How often should the medium be changed? Thank you :)
Do you still have the Dendrobium Stardust Firebird?
At 18:48, what is the pointed growth on the bottom left hand side of the plant? A root, spike or Keiki?
Have you any experience with water culture?
Thank You!
Hi Dan, only use water no barks is that ok?
What would you do with torn petals? As in slits in the middle,.
I'm a beginner and I left the flower spikes on one on of my phelaenopsis and they started growing leaves on 2 of the buds. Are they keikies?
Francisco Ochoa - on the nodes, you mean? If so, yes, congrats! You have keikis!
would you happen to know what variety the white phalaenopsis with small purple spots is?
My beautiful orchid, has in the beginning of bottom leave black spot. I applied neem oil.what do you suggest to me to do.
Thank you 🙏
Hi, not really sure what is happening from your description, but do type in the search bar 'missorchidgirl orchid infection' and you'll find all my videos on leaf infections :D
Does anyone know how long limp leaves should take to plump up and become firm again? I slacked on my watering and now many of my leaves are limp. I don't want to water too too much if it takes say, a week for the leaves to get firm again...
Can you re-pot a Phalaenopsis that have a growing keiki?
hi.
orchids can survive in very hot condition ..? i have very extreme weather maximum tem. 40 above in summer. can orchids survive..?
Atanak 2 ThnX..
Raheel mazhar u can grow or care for a vanda orchid instead as they are warm-loving plants
I have cool winters (almost always above 6-8ºC the coldest nights) and springs and atumn between 13-30ºC
Ps: below 8ºC I put my orchids inside except the epidendrum (my orchid had never suffered cold burnings)
What is the name of those medium you used.. than you🤙🙏
Hello! Do you dilute the peroxide?
