suspenders hold your pants up, belts hold your tools to your body. i imagine that is the original function. suspenders hold up your pants, the belt holds your hammer, axe, gun, knife, whatever.
As an old man whose derriere is decreasing in size and whose belly is increasing in size, I find suspenders indispensable. And they are far more comfortable.
My dear Okey, I simply must extend my sincerest gratitude for inspiring me to part ways with those tired old belts and embrace the distinguished charm of suspenders. It is, without doubt, the most elegant decision I’ve made in some time!
I find that the only way my belt holds my pants up is if it’s so tight that it cuts off circulation and causes pain. Even then, if I have to do anything other than stand straight up at work, my shirt comes untucked and my pants droop anyway. Suspenders eliminate all of that. They also reduce fatigue while working a long shift. It may sound like an exaggeration, but making the switch to suspenders is life changing.
Just a Few days ago I was actually searching for a video concerning suspenders from your channel. It has come at the right time.....Thank You Prof for your eloquent explanation. Men need to learn a lot from you....Keep up the wonderful work....personally I prefer Suspenders
Great teachable moment! Appreciate the knowledge. What should one look for before purchasing suspenders? Low end versus High end. Everyday versus Evening/special occasions.
As usual, sage advise, Proff. HOWEVER, I have to disagree with belts not working at all. They do work on a person with a natural or slim waist line and when worn with high waist trousers. But only then. They indeed do not work with mid- or low rise pants and/or for men with a belly, like me. This does not stop me personally from wearing a belt with my denims, for example, simply for the optics, but I am under no illusion that this would actually help my trousers stay up.
Dear Komrade, Even if you’re thin waisted, your waist size will FLUCTUATE throughout the day There’s NO WAY a belt holds up your trousers without constant TUGGING at it 😅
Beautiful take! 🔥 🔥 I still love belts as an accessory. However, never thought of them as “cutting you in of half” 🤯 I have a “ton” suspenders (braces). Unfortunately, the majority of my pants don’t have suspender buttons. 🤷🏾 PROFF! 🙏🏾😎
Belts, in terms of holding cloths and not accessories, became widespread during the war when materials for elastic suspenders were diverted for the war effort. They weren't great, but they worked well enough when suspenders weren't available. After the war, they stuck around simply cause people got used to them.
i must ask, Proff. Say you do not wear a suit jacket and just a shirt and trouser. Naturally there will be scenarios where you'll not wear a suit jacket. What do you recommend then? I'm not sure all formal outfits without jackets would look good with suspenders. They're clearly made to rertain the drape and the trouser crease when wearing a suit, but that's clearly a pre-condition. Granted you must always follow the law of thirds, but you also do not want your torso to be shortened beyond reasonable limit. So, what then? Wouldn't a blended belt be a better option than suspenders?
belts are more useful for more medieval type garments, like a heavier and more form fitting cottehardie, since having something like that requires a belt to distribute the weight of it onto the waist rather than shoulders
The comedian Mitch Hedberg had a joke that went something like "My belt holds my pants up, but the belt loops hold my belt up. I don't know what's really happening down there. Who is the real hero?"
I wear suspenders with formal wear, however my shirts still almost untuck themselves on the sides and I constantly have to readjust and tuck it back in. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
I have typically two differently cut pants for each suit: One for belt and one for suspenders. If I wear a double breasted suit I prefer suspenders. With a single breasted suit I use suspenders. I do not like situations where you can see the suspenders.
I sometimes wear a belt on the waist as it was originally supposed to. And it holds my trousers up for sure because I've got a thin waist. But that way it's still very uncomfortable. For most men with a bit of belly it obviously wouldn't work.
IMHO both can be worn effectively. The problem mainly stems from the industry's nonsense with low rise trousers over the last 2 decades and the error of colors used for the belts as you point out. However there is no question that braces are more comfortable and elegant when worn properly.
I've become a huge fan of suspenders. I'm 6 feet tall but with 29-30 inch inseam. Perhaps I'm breaking a rule by having my suspenders show, but it's in the context of workwear and I feel as though my outfit is cohesive and appropriate for blue collar work. I wear brown nubuck stitch down leather boots, high waisted full cut blue jeans, a hickory striped button down shirt, and brown leather suspenders attached via bachelor buttons, topped off with a gray flatcap bearing my ancestral family crest as the work uniform I've created for myself.
I am a new viewer and I am so very happy to be part of this community! Thank you for that wonderful explanation as I have found myself jerking my pants up with a damn belt all day! I'm done! Where can I find pants which have no belt but have adjusters to hold the pant up as you showed in your clip?
I used to think that but know I think belts can really enhance an outfit. I tend to think of an outfit, from top to bottom, as a sentence. And sometimes, a belt acts as a comma or a semicolon in the middle of a sentence. Also, it can bring more cohesiveness color-wise. Let's say your outfit is mainly navy and your shoes dark brown, the outfit looks better IMO with a brown belt. That said, for shorter men, I tend to agree with you if they want to look taller (?). At the end of the day, I think both are valid options depending on it is done.
Black tie event coming up in November. What is the difference between a solid black-tie vs a solid black bow tie? Also can you wear a different color cummerbund then the actual color of the tuxedo?
Hey Nick, 1) if you wanted to do everything 100% correctly, you would have the belt loops taken off at a tailor's and have suspender buttons sewn inside the waistband, as shown in Proff's video. However, you'll be doing two alterations now, which might be costly. 2) It also depends on your trouser type. If we're talking about classic woolen dress pants, yes, the above applies. But if we're talking about jeans or chinos, I really wouldn't take off the belt loops. And if you're wearing a double-breasted suit, your waistline will mostly remain hidden anyways. 3) Know that 1) is the correct way to do it, but you don't always have to do it the correct way. Truth is: most people don't notice. So, if you just want to try out the feeling of suspenders without sacrificing the option of belts, just have suspender buttons sewn inside the waistband first. It's absolutely okay to roll with suspenders and belt loops for a while. Hope that helps! Best regards
Sorry Proff I gonna have to disagree on the point on belts been useless. I wear belts and never find myself having to readjust my trousers or tug at the belt as I find they do keep my trousers up. I do agree on the point on the light brown belts with navy suits. Also I do love having side tabs on my suit trousers. I like belt loops on my more casual trousers like my chinos.
Solid points forcefully made. But they seem to be coming from a disembodied torso. I am persuaded that light brown shoes under dark trousers look bad. I am not persuaded cream trousers under a blue jacket and waistcoat look good. The man undercuts his own point.
If your suit fits well, you should ideally wear neither of them the only suits I have that I wear any items with to hold them up are the ones I bought on sale and this way the ones that just don’t fit properly but for a good fitted suit there is no reason to wear any of that
True indeed Jomap. One can have suit trousers FITTED at the waist but not with FULL CUT TROUSERS which require at least AN INCH bigger at the waist It is this extra inch that allows them to HANG FROM SUSPENDERS
I recently wore suspenders for the first time in a very very very long time... and at that point I decided that belts are done in my life. First, suspenders look amazing, even if you see you them. And you can use them with regular pants with belt loops and it's still far far far more comfortable.
Well, your figure is cut by the contrast between your trousers and shirt no matter what, so it all comes down to how high your rise is, but I see where you're coming from. I personally like to wear belts with my chinos just to create a visual coherence in my outfit by matching leathers and metals, but agree that they're not properly functional. Hence why I simply take off the belt loops on my suits. Perhaps one day I'll rock them with suspenders! Cheers Proff 😎
You are right but the belt makes the trousers appear to end at the BOTTOM of the belt, whereas without a belt the trousers appear to end at the TOP of the trousers. This is often a 2 inch/ 5 cm difference, which makes a real difference to the perceived length of the legs.
Although I love suspenders and find them to be both very comfortable, practical and elegant to wear, I have to disagree with the point regarding belts. I think the main issue that Proff is highlighting is not actually the belt themselves but rather casual belts in combination with low-rise trousers in a formal ensemble such as a suit, which I agree looks strange. However, the point about belts cutting the figure in half is precisely why I personally enjoy wearing belts, it creates a visual contrast and barrier between your trousers and shirt, which harmonises the outfit since the shirt and trousers don't blend into eachother. Suspenders are wonderful with formal ensembles such as full suits, but belts are very *pratical* for visually breaking up an outfit, which is useful for more casual, odd combinations where none of the clothing pieces match (such as blazers and odd trousers). All in all, suspenders are preferred while wearing a suit. Great video, by the way! :)
Hello i have a question regarding black tie wear, is it acceptable to opt for a white piping on a black tuxedo? I dont think this is traditional but is it allowed? Or is it best to just stick to black pipping on black tuxedo lapel
I'm in the same camp braces over a belt every time, I will request that my tailor place buttons on the inside of my trousers during the alterations just for that sole purpose...now on the matter of wearing a belt I must admit that I have considered wearing one should I invest in purchasing what is being touted as "Hollywood trousers" or high waisted trousers thanks for sharing another excellent video!
You say belts are useless but recommend side tabs - Do they not perform the exact same action? How are side tabs superior (other than not cutting your figure in half)?
It's more about style than function. Both are similarly useless, but the the side tabs don't visually shorten your legs. Another user explained it perfectly in the comments: with a belt, your trousers will appear to end at the bottom of the belt, visually shortening your legs. Without a belt, your trousers appear to end at the top the waistband, visually adding 1.5-2 inches to your legs.
There should be mention, the time when belts _are_ useful is in work wear and doing actual labor. That's when they're useful because you have toolbelts
Hi, Okey ! Excellent video. When wearing suspenders, do you usually tailor your trousers a bit wider at the waist, in order to feel comfortable also while seating ? Thanks !
The issue with suspenders is nobody makes suspenders with adjustable back straps, making them slide off my shoulders. I tried them, and they don't work.
Kirby Allison sells suspenders with an adjustable back strap. If you look at the suspenders which the Proff is wearing at 2:24 you will see that they are also adjustable but I have no idea who made those ones.
1:04 - is this just a bad example? The light shirt vs the dark pants, you might as well have a belt there cutting it in half. Unless you're monochromatic I dont see how anybody could look straight up and down most outfits, the colors cut it up...?
Hear hear! I used to wear belts not only did it look bad, but they maybe kinda worked. They could only work i reckon if you were super skinny. Braces are much better!
@@AskOkeyInc Correct. I'm thin and am always adjusting my belt. I need to loosen the belt if I eat or even if I sit down from a standing position. Even if I make the belt tight, I still need to pull up my pants from time to time while walking. Belts don't function well for me.
Belts are for safety, fights, and dont mind no cutting into two halves argument. Since ancient times, belts are worn. Champions wear belts, soldiers military have cross belts, belts are classy. Michael Jackson the school of class in aesthetic advanced dressing- wore belts as heavy as anyone. So it comes down to taste and personal choice. Suspenders are good but i hardly see them in the stores
I agreed with most of Professor's points. But belts ARE indeed functional for men with slim, fit, &/or athletic frames. When the physique gets into the portly, overweight realm (with a large stomach)... THEN, they frequently become ineffective. 🤷🏾♂️
How do you feel about the color of the suspenders, should you match them with something? There are many comical looking suspenders available (even Albert Thurston sells these sometimes for example) like ones with chickens or whatever, would you wear something like that? If there are some color rules, what would you reckon the most versatile color would be, say I could only afford to get 2 (I don’t attend formal events really, so just casual country-ish wear). Thanks if you read this.
What are some good places to buy suspenders, and what colors should be worn to match the particular outfit? Also are suspenders suitable for larger men?
Thanks, Proff. I would add a few points: i) although a belt does hold up trousers for men with a waist which is narrower than their hips, it is uncomfortable and hot (and especially problematic in hot weather) ii) the belt makes the trousers appear to end at the BOTTOM of the belt, whereas without a belt the trousers appear to end at the TOP of the trousers. This is often a 2 inch/ 5 cm difference, which makes a real difference to the perceived length of the legs. iii) the tight cinching action of belts can make the shirts wrinkle around the top of the trousers, whereas with suspenders the shirt is free to lie flat and looks better as a result
I make and sell hi quality belts and suspenders and wear both. So this makes me not fashionable, too bad. I feel good about wearing both. From an old time saddlemaker.
I usually go both both...belt and braces....... ...hang on...that's just a saying thy old mentor in woodworking used to say when I was an apprentice furniture maker... Ido wear both, but not at the same time ;-) I do gravitate to suspenders/braces more often than not. I don't like the blue suite/tan shoes/tan belt look at all! Tony
Suspenders hold your pants up, belts hold things to your waist. A working man wears a belt so he can hold tools, items, etc in pouches that attach to that belt. A suit wearing man wears braces since there is nothing you should carry with a suit that cannot be kept in the many pockets a suit jacket affords, or a briefcase.
The only time a belt looks fashionable is when you are dressing western with Wrangler Jeans and a pressed long sleeved button down shirt. Very few guys can pull that off though for that look to work you need to be pretty slim/small in the hips legs and seat. Google a Picture of George Strait and you will see what I mean.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I've got always irritated nippels when wearing suspenders. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Pull them to the sides 😅

Proff, where did you buy the suspenders with the adjustable back strap which you are wearing at 2:24?
We make them or rather, sell them here at AskOkey
Pls send us an email style@askokey.com
There should be mention, the time when belts _are_ useful is in work wear and doing actual labor. That's when they're useful because you have toolbelts
Hi, Okey ! Excellent video. When wearing suspenders, do you usually tailor your trousers a bit wider at the waist, in order to feel comfortable also while seating ? Thanks !
Of course Alex 💯
Please see my videos of TROUSER FIT on this UA-cam Channel
@@AskOkeyInc I will, thanks !

I love you, Prof. You're hilarious 😂 😃
BLESS YOU Sony 😅🙌🏾
Personally, I prefer a belt (I never wear a belt or light brown shoes with dark outfits).
My belt works
"Belts don't work"... I thought I was crazy haha. Glad someone else pointed it out haha
@@OneOneThree-wl7ml No you’re not 😅
1:04 - is this just a bad example? The light shirt vs the dark pants, you might as well have a belt there cutting it in half.
Unless you're monochromatic I dont see how anybody could look straight up and down most outfits, the colors cut it up...?
This was solid advice.
Both. Suspenders hold your pants up. Belts hold the tools.
Hear hear! I used to wear belts not only did it look bad, but they maybe kinda worked. They could only work i reckon if you were super skinny. Braces are much better!
Even when skinny they do not work James
Why?
Your waist size fluctuates during the day
@@AskOkeyInc Correct.
If you insist sir
But you heard my reasoning
@@AskOkeyInc. Yes INDEED. I completely followed your reasoning. 👋🏾
@@SoundScientist1 Thank you Scientist😁
How do you feel about the color of the suspenders, should you match them with something?
There are many comical looking suspenders available (even Albert Thurston sells these sometimes for example) like ones with chickens or whatever, would you wear something like that?
If there are some color rules, what would you reckon the most versatile color would be, say I could only afford to get 2 (I don’t attend formal events really, so just casual country-ish wear).
Thanks if you read this.
How can we wear suspenders casually Proff? like with t shirt and jeans?
I couldn’t agree more Okey! I would wear suspenders everyday if I could!
No belts! He is right! Suspenders are more elegant.
Clear as day Walter 🙌🏾💯
What are some good places to buy suspenders, and what colors should be worn to match the particular outfit? Also are suspenders suitable for larger men?
Is it okay if suspenders are visible?
Thanks, Proff. I would add a few points:
i) although a belt does hold up trousers for men with a waist which is narrower than their hips, it is uncomfortable and hot (and especially problematic in hot weather)
ii) the belt makes the trousers appear to end at the BOTTOM of the belt, whereas without a belt the trousers appear to end at the TOP of the trousers. This is often a 2 inch/ 5 cm difference, which makes a real difference to the perceived length of the legs.
iii) the tight cinching action of belts can make the shirts wrinkle around the top of the trousers, whereas with suspenders the shirt is free to lie flat and looks better as a result
Well said and good explanation of the optical "trick"
ALL VERY GOOD POINTS Sir 🙌🏾
@@KomradeKrusherThere you go Komrade once again to the rescue🙌🏾
I make and sell hi quality belts and suspenders and wear both. So this makes me not fashionable, too bad. I feel good about wearing both. From an old time saddlemaker.
I usually go both both...belt and braces.......
...hang on...that's just a saying thy old mentor in woodworking used to say when I was an apprentice furniture maker...
Ido wear both, but not at the same time ;-) I do gravitate to suspenders/braces more often than not. I don't like the blue suite/tan shoes/tan belt look at all!

I hope you don’t wear them both at once Tony 😅

Jack, these days I get my jeans FITTED a the waist which obviates the need for a belt
@@AskOkeyIncSame, you have to have a certain looks to pull off the whole contemporary Rodeo Cowboy look. I live in Texas and it’s hilarious seeing most guys dressed like that that are just posers especially 400 pound guys 😂. I’m just like fellas it’s time to move on and embrace classic mens style.
