I've never heard of Anson belt and buckle, but I must they product definitely has my interest. The lack of belt marks and ease of adjusting makes it very practical. I'll have to check it out.
@ryan_1099 It is. It actually got me to start experimenting with colors and styles. I used to have a pair of jeans, a few sweatpants and a bunch of t shirts, now I have several kinda of jeans, several pairs of tailored pants, vests, suits, leather jackets, trenchcoats, ties, turtlenecks, scarves... Experimenting with different looks is pretty fun and it actually makes me enjoy clothes shopping
But Nanami himself doesn't wear suspenders tho. Those are shoulder straps from an armpit holster he repurposed to carry his knife on his back. He has a belt on his pants
Nah, was talking to a coworker the other day, I see someone in a cape I'm out. Any other article of clothing isn't as alarming, would be weird but people be weird. Someone's wearing a cape in public though, that's never good news.
cane is just practical, suspenders most definitely, but capes idk, maybe in dustier and frequently cold areas but anywhere else that's hot, humid, or rainy? not likely.
@@LetMeFLY649 This. The reason capes & cloaks went out of style is because they became impractical after we invented coats with sleeves. The purpose of the cape/cloak was to wrap around your torso to protect it from the weather (it was little more than a thin blanket to wear over your shoulders when outside), but they had limited practicality because they could only drape over your body & often got in the way if you had to bend over or use your arms for a task. The invention of sleeves allowed designers to move the cloak/cape in the direction of coats (which are exponentially more effective at the same goal). This is also why seeing someone wearing a cape today raises red flags - because they're going out of their way to use an out-of-style, outdated method. It'd be the same as if women started walking around in bloomers again. When someone flaunts their refusal to conform to social norms, it raises red flags that they may be a sociopath and thus dangerous.
Dacian warriors who fought the Romans had belt loops. There are several reasons that I don't wear braces ('suspenders' in British English are what ladies use to hold up stockings). Perhaps chief among them is that going to the lavatory is so much more difficult. If I am wearing a waistcoat and jacket, I have too take them both off before I can get my trousers down.
it's lindy! That's a great point I haven't even considered. I think he should have mentioned that through large parts of history people wore clothing that wasn't really comparable to modern pants. Robes tunics kilts and whatnot
@@prielknaaphofnar.9754 I have tried unbuttoning the braces, but that it worse. Getting to the buttons and undoing them is difficult, and then the elastic draws the braces up into my waistcoat to where they are almost impossible to reach when it comes to buttoning things up again.
Can confirm. I will have to disrobe until the suspenders are exposed, then down off the shoulders to use the lavatory. It means that I have to plan ahead a bit and make sure the stall has the hook inside the door to hang the other layers on. At my place of work, it's a solid 50/50 whether it's available or not.
Fan of your channel lindy. I've had that problem too. I generally don't wear them when I have the waistcoat on (longer church activities are the exception). The pants should fit well enough without them, which is tough if they aren't tailored too. But outside of that, I go full 'Gordon gecko', the jacket doesn't stay on, so it isn't a problem
I wear suspenders since i had a job as a driver 7 years ago. Not only were they more comfortable for driving, since they weren't constantly pressing on my bladder, but i als loved how they just never slipped down. Seeing how they looked with my button-up work shirt and pants, i started imagening it onto my private wardrobe, and that's where i fell in love 😂
I suffer with Crohns disease and suspenders are game changing. A belt puts pressure on my bowels which is quite painful and due to swelling I need to adjust the belt frequently through out the day. With suspenders there’s no additional pain and allows my bowels to swell and move about without any adjustment! Highly recommend trying them.
I don't consider myself a fashionable person but this was a great video, I learned a lot and now I understand why my grandfather swore by his suspenders and always refused a belt.
Once you try suspenders it's hard to go back. Having one's guts cinched down tight all day is brutal on the intestines and I suspect has negative health consequences.
Different video i’ve saw mentioned belt putting pressure on some nerves causing pain near hip/back area if you use it long enough. Only place i saw that mentioned, so not sure how accurate that is.
My only excuse to useing a belt is that i lose weight and now all of my pants are bigger, and i mean really So the belt keeps them around my hips better than a suspender that i would use when i get smaller pants
Heavily depends on your weight as well though. When I was heavy belts were incredibly uncomfortable because as you and others have mentioned, my stomach was doing all the work holding everything up. Once I lost weight the belt starts working as it originally was intended and grabbing a large part of your waist at once, so less pressure on one point at any time. It's the difference between someone bear hugging and pulling you, or grabbing your arm and yanking, one's a lot less comfortable.
@@popenieafantome9527 wearing a tight belt since basically forever. No issues here. But i thought the same about suspenders. Having to carry the weight of your pants with your shoulders is kinda counter intuitive. Im an engineer and carry many tools i need on a day to day basis with carabiners on my belt loops. If i had to carry that weight not with my hips but my back... i am sure i had backpain every day.
Suspenders are so much more comfortable and functional for blue collar work. Belts have to be uncomfortably tight to keep pants up and they always slide down when doing manual labor.
Depends on your build. If you're heavyset then yes, belts basically use your gut to hold your pants up. When I lost weight belts became a *lot* more comfortable due to working as intended and grabbing a larger section of my waist, meaning less pressure on one point. Also helps that I was no longer built like an upside-down pyramid, so the pants actually have something to grab on to lol.
I have an outdoor laboring type job. As I’ve gotten older I’ve found that my summer pants pretty much stay up with a belt. Once fall hits, I switch pants due to weather. These pants seem much more interested in sliding down. I started wearing suspenders a couple of years ago and it’s so much nicer. They can feel a little restrictive from time to time depending on the work I’m doing, but is better than pulling my pants up every ten minutes. Thank you for this fascinating, historical video, and thank you for service. 🇺🇸
An interesting thing I noticed from looking at the thumbnail to this video is that suspenders look to create a wider shoulder profile by breaking up the sections of the body and making you look at each segment rather than as a singular piece
I wear them every time I wear a waistcoat, usually in the winter. The fact that some may frown on them and consider them old makes me want to wear them more.
I’m an attorney and wear suspenders every time I wear a suit (which is most workdays). I find that for me (I’m a pretty fat guy) they work better and feel better than a belt. Drawbacks are: -if I am wearing a vest while in the bathroom and need to lower my trousers, I have to take the vest off (and hope the stall has a coathook); and -a pair of silk suspenders, worn 3-5 times per week, will show serious wear after about six months; and they aren’t cheap.
I don´t know why YT recommended me this video but I am pleased and more informed than before. Good job. Now I need to wear my suspensors more often I guess :)
Dillards not only sells suspenders, but their tailored section sells Hart Schaffner Marx that has slacks to be worn at the waist. They'll even put on suspender buttons on the slacks
Nice history. One extra step was that for a long time before the suspenders when pants were at the natural waist, they were laced to the doublet so that your effectively your jacket acted as your suspenders. In some cases there was a hidden lacing strip inside the doublet, but in many early 17th century paintings, you can see the ties as decorative bows along the waist.
Been wearing suspenders for the last 4 years. Started because I lost a lot of weight, couldn't afford to get my suits tailored, and a belt would have caused bunching. Pair of cheap suspenders were ten bucks. Haven't gone back because it's so much more comfortable and gives me a unique look in the office. Being in sales it also gave me a conversation starter. Just bonus after bonus for them.
You shouldn't say the belt is only a hundred years old, maybe certain concepts of the belt. But a draw string is close enough to a belt, almost everyone would just call it a belt.
Not really, it's closer to a sash. Belts involve a locking mechanism, it can be a pin or a ring, but belts have a mechanism. The drawstring is closer to a sash or a simple knot. It doesn't require any mechanisms
@@LartinBeats-rg6pf In what way is a knot meaningfully different from a pin or ring? They both serve the purpose of holding your pants up through friction. 90 percent of the belt is identical to 90 percent of the drawstring. Yes, the shape is different but that isn't really a meaningful difference.
Honestly, I just dropped in to compliment the author of this video on its title, but stayed for the comments. Reading them in non-American English is absolutely hysterical! Well done all!
I almost skipped this video. I'm glad I didn't because it was one of the most interesting YT videos I've watched in a long time. Very informative, especially the history lesson.
I stopped wearing belts last year when I got a problem with my gallbladder. One of the best things of suspenders, it changed my lumbar pain and is a significant improvement.
A lot of it has to do with the height at which trousers are worn. High waisted trousers work great with suspenders, the lower it goes the worse it gets. Especially for your shirt.
@@joecope9935 False. With a belt, I was fixing my tuck constantly while walking, after sitting, after standing up, etc. With suspenders, I only tuck after standing up.
thank you, its always good to find someone that can explain the origins of things. Tickles my curiosity and it helps me who am a bit deaf fashion-wise.
When I purchased my first tuxedo (40 years ago), it was set up for suspenders. Fast forward to my latest tuxedo, I had to have the tailer remove the belt loops from the pants and put in buttons for the suspenders. Same thing with the last suit I purchased. I'll confess to wearing a belt with leans only due to the cost to retrofit each pair for suspenders.
Learn some basic sewing and then it become pretty cheap. 6 buttons and a little bit of thread and some time while watching TV. I've done it on a number of my trousers that didn't come with them (haven't done it to jeans though).
I'm not sure how big of a difference it would make in terms of practicality or style, but the suspenders I own have teeth on the end that clamp onto the waist of my pants. I actually didn't know suspenders went on buttons and assumed most just had toothed clamps as well lol. The downside is that it's a bit meticulous to place the clamps equally around the waist's hem, but I assume it would be a cheaper/simpler option if your pants only have a belt loop.
There was a British Army officer who famously landed on the beaches at D Day armed with a sword. He believed that a man without a sword was underdressed. It would get you arrested now for sure.
@@brianthesnail3815 In Britain it would get you arrested. But most (not all) places in the US, Sword carry is legal. You would get a lot of weird looks, however.
Thank you for a most interesting video. I switched to suspenders about a year ago and haven't gone back to belts since. The combination of low waisted trousers and belts trying to stay on non existent hips while working, became intolerable. Suspenders just do a much better job. Great to know the history of such items and how they were influenced by a combination of fashion and practicality.
I sell suspenders, I recommend avoiding Chinese made suspenders, their clips are notorious for letting go. I only sell US made suspenders, they never let go. I wear suspenders made by Perry Suspenders of Illinois. Perry - inventors of hook suspenders.
@@anthonyyoo1934 I'm a belt-and-suspenders kind of guy, myself. And I cannot understand why he didn't mention that that phrase! In any case, I wear my smartphone on a belt clip which is pretty heavy lifting for a belt alone. My pants always need to be pulled up, which looks stupid. Suspenders are great for me because they take the weight off the waist and put it on my shoulders.
I wear suspenders with my tuxedos primarily. I love how they make me appear taller and more confident in my dealings with others. They also help in getting my cummerbunds positioned perfectly. And to top it off they make my bow ties stand out better. About the only complaint I have is that when my tuxes go to the cleaners, they are a bit difficult to undo. But all things considered, I would recommend using suspenders over belts any day.
I loved wearing braces back in the '80s. They looked good with a suit. I stopped wearing them in the '90s because fashion in the office became business casual. When I sat at my desk wearing braces, people would joke that I was sitting at a desk and not a tractor. Also I learned to hate suspenders because they had clamps that attached to the pants fabric and ripped holes in very visible areas of the waist. Wish braces would come back. They had a great look and held up pants a lot better than a cinched waist belt.
One condition where you wouldnt want suspenders is working pants that you might stuff full of heavy tools on top of the usual. It can lead to severe lower backpain depending on how long you wear it, while belt wont, because it puts the weight directly on the hips insted of your spine and then hips.
You can actually buy suspenders that are made to hooking to a belt. You can loose t your belt taking pressure of your bladder all the while being able to feel the load less because now it’s distributed over your entire torso and hips. Instead of one or the other
@@Kacpa2 or just pair them with a utility belt instead. That way the heavy tools are still focused around the hips, when the clothing itself is supported by suspenders.
@@zagrizena Personally, I find suspenders + belt to be the best way to go for weight distribution. Also, with the shape of my hips, belt only means plumbers crack if I'm not really careful. YMMV on that though.
In my experience, the suspenders are best in this situation. I used to wear belts and had heavy tools in my pants, but i had to keep the belt so damn tight for it not to fall down, and keeping it that tight were uncomfortable and painful. And still i had to keep pulling my panta up. Switched to suspenders a few years ago, and now my pants feel light and i experience no discomfort.
Moving away from suspenders was a mistake for sure. started wearing them because a belt buckle would dig into my gut when i sat. I have fallen in love with then, i wear a Y back with a single elastic and clips ment to use the belt loops (don't know what they are called but they have a swivel as well) They are SO comfortable.
Me too, but not the handgun, I attach my cell phone pouch and keys clip, plus Swisstool pouch to my belt. From a belt maker Down Under. I use US made suspenders.
I'm a bit on the rounder side, trying to lose it but even if I ever do lose my gut to even a small degree...I'll still love my suspenders that I got. I got a pair of the Y strap clip on style suspenders for comfort...a belt buckle of any size can dig into my stomach when I sit down, and not having to adjust my belt after I eat is great. The fact is suspenders sadly are very niche and usually only worn by 3 types of people now 1) heavier set guys/those with a rounder shape as stated in the vid, 2) people who like old fashioned things and don't care about perception and thus wear clothing styles and fashion from before they were born on the regular, and 3) Old folks who already wore suspenders growing up and are used to them. Sadly these 3 types of people that wear suspenders on the regular give a rather...negative look for those who are fashion conscious or want something that looks "cool"....I can tell you right now I have to order my suspenders online cause I don't think I've ever seen a local store sell them over belts.
This video has no business being so interesting and educational 😆🙌🏻 Also, the 2011 Ansen belt clip is how you introduce a sponsor 👏🏻 I love when creators do that; it makes an impact. A+ video 🏆
I'm a lady who likes her suspenders!! I don't mind belts when I want to wear them or when it's more convenient, but I go to a university where uniforms are both pants and pencil skirts and since my weight is changing a lot due to lifestyle changes, it's awesome to wear suspenders and not have to worry about them both falling when the weight shifts. Also, I've got a really squishy tummy so while a tight belt does work, it is so tiring to wear it @-@
I always thought belts were generally uncomfortable until I got one specifically made of chromexcel leather. Now I think belts are very comfortable! The softness makes all the difference.
It depends on your body shape. Belts are going to be more comfortable than suspenders if you've got enough hips/butt to hold the belt without having to go too tight. If you've got a flat butt or a gut, the belt may require more tightening than is comfortable. But, there's a reason why larger backpacks come with a padded belt, your shoulders aren't really supposed to be holding things up for long periods of time. In the case of suspenders, it's a bit of a moot point as pants aren't typically heavy enough for it to really matter, so folks should wear whichever is more comfortable for them.
I’ve only found one use for suspenders, supporting a heavy belt. For either work as a mechanic or for paintball, I wear belts with things strapped to them. The weight causes back pain so I attached suspenders to reduce the stress on my lower back.
Classic military setup at least into the 1980s was suspenders for the throusers and a free (non looped) belt&suspender setup for ammo pouches (4-8x20 rounds of 7.62x51), mess kit (around 1.5-2kg), canteen (1.5kg), ETool (1.5kg), couple of "I like nobody" DM52s and stuff. Easily worn all day
@@mbr5742 Pretty sure many armies still do this, just that the US army has such an abundance of plate carriers that they don't really use normal webbing
@@Frille512 Last reserve call up for me was 1990s before the german army did away with the old style (light infantry) Jägertruppe so I simply was not sure
More people need to watch Red Green Show and get back to suspenders. Really fell in love with them last year when I bought my first set while losing weight. It sucks most belts have an inch gap between holes and as your waist size adjusts where one hole is too tight and the next one over though is too loose. Also wow, been a long time since YT brought this channel I'm subbed to to my feed.
Funnily enough this has previously happened with body armor over the ages. For a while, we had early breastplates and loricca segmentata and those were strapped in a way that distributed the weight better, but then going to chainmail it would have a belt around the abdomen which made for very poor weight distribution (very tiring on your waist and shoulders) By the time brigandine cuirasses became a thing, those would be using straps all along the body to help on weight distribution and make it much more comfortable to wear and that carried over to full plate armor as well. Then we got to modern body armor and went right back to the poor weight distribution of chainmail... At least for a while. It has seen improvements over the years both in shape and in making better protection while keeping it as lightweight as possible
My interest in historical fashion has finally landed me in the men's section!!! Thank the algorithm! Now I have a proper explanation to my boyfriend why the vintage pants we found have such a higher waist compared to his normal jeans. (We're similar in size so the vintage pants are mine now)
i'm not trying to be mean, i'm very serious about this: I very rarely care about how men look, but when I see a belt and suspenders at the same time it's one of the very few things on men I think looks absolutely silly. Use one or the other. Belt and suspenders makes you look like you are trying to show off and very cringe, like you want to wear suspenders to look retro but you don't need them. You are not doing that, but personally if I saw you I'd basically think you were a show-off. So frankly your idea that you're wearing a belt not to look weird makes you look even weirder because you have the suspenders. Again, i'm not trying to be mean, i'm trying to tell you how it looks to an outsider, and i'm telling you people probably think you're a poser, in all seriousness. I actually wear my suspenders under my shirt, but if you need to tuck your shirt in I have heard there is a product out there that lets you do that. If I had to tuck my shirt in I'd just wear a belt tbh, or wear the suspenders on the outside and wear a jacket like the old days.
@emergencystoppingonly This is very weird. I use the belt to hold some of my EDC kit, why shouldn't I use suspenders to better distribute the weight?.. It's literally what soldiers do with battle belts.
@@alemar1122 I wouldn’t call it weird, but if it were “weird,” it’s always better to double down and embrace it than to try and fit in. You’ll just end up coming off as insecure or indecisive in how you want to look or act. For example, an analogy, if you really like the more nerdy and geeky side of things, embrace it, and you’ll look more attractive and confident. A lot of guys make the pitfall of ignoring things like this, even if it’s integral to them, and come off as indecisive, and you’ll struggle more for the sake of trying to fit in. The point is to just double down on either or. Belts and suspenders weren’t designed to go together, and unfortunately, fashion dictates this, too. I guarantee you, though, if you’re confident in yourself, you can wear those suspenders by themselves and make them look good. It’s just a belt and suspenders don’t really make for a good combination either way, so I’d choose one or the other on the days you’d want to wear them.
@@p_serdiuk That’s a different type of equipment for a different purpose. Civilian suspenders and belts do not go together, and are not made to go together. Battle and utility belts are designed to go with harnesses and tactical suspenders to combine into a singular LBE. As you mentioned, this is for practical implications of bearing more weight from gear. Aesthetically speaking, the former looks more awkward and mismatched; the latter looks, well, tactical, practical, and militaristic. I’d definitely say fashion is both objective and subjective, and military fashion is an entirely different thing from civilian fashion. Yes, wearing camo cargo pants is accepted in American society, but wearing your rig, kit, and gear with a service uniform or dress is an entirely different thing, and you’ll get strange looks. It also comes with the perception, too. Wear camouflage cargo pants and a tank top, and people’ll think you’re a civilian with a little casual military spice added in. Start incorporating things like a battle belt, kit, service uniform, etc, and they’ll wonder why a soldier is present or someone is larping, or other thought processes. But of course, if you’re actually military, wearing your service or dress uniform is completely fine and acceptable, and people will assume you’re in the military. It’s just, you wouldn’t wear your belt and a harness without gear though. Not only would it look awkward in public, your CO would chew you out for making that choice if they saw it.
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, specifically in ex-logging towns of the coastal timber industries. Suspenders were extremely common, and if you look up the Keys brand of dungarees (very popular with loggers), youll see that they usually come with buttons specifically for suspenders. For them, it had nothing to do with fashion, but everything to do with comfort and utility. These days it has become something of a style in very specific regions...Keys double knee jeans with red suspenders, worn leather boots, and a black and white striped "hickory" shirt...a specific but once common look.
I've been wearing suspenders and a belt for quite some time. I find the trick to be if one is willing to give them a try, pick a specific outfit or role to fill. I wore mine for my tool belt, but then preferred to wear them every day. I use simple milsurp for casual wear and a nicer set when going out. I am bucking the trend hard, but it's a comfort over looks.
In the movie Once Upon a Time in the West, Henry Fonda asked a man wearing both a belt and suspenders - "How can I trust a man who can't trust his own pants?"
Funny that you mention that. I have a pair of suspenders that are designed to attach to a belt. They are a y style, with a clip that slides behind the belt and hooks to the bottom of the belt, there is even a small gap in the clip for the belt loop to pass through. The idea is that you don't have to cinch down the belt and can wear it loose so it is more comfortable, as the suspenders are what actually hold up the pants.
"Belts and suspenders" is actually an engineering saying about the value of redundant systems to prevent single-point-failure issues, especially in safety-critical applications.
My grandfather wore suspenders until he passed in 1994 at 100. He didn't have my dad until he was 50 and he had me in middle age, so I'm not too ancient. He wore suspenders, a hat, and a button down shirt just working at the farm. He would dress up on Sunday: he wore a much nicer version of his suspenders, a suit, hat with a feather, and carried a fancy cane (he didn't need one). He was very stylish but he didn't try to keep up. He wore 1940s fashion and looked very dignified. He was fortunate. He didn't have any major illness. He just died in his sleep one day. Anyway this video made me think of him.
I've got a big belly and I've got a big booty. With belts, the front of my pants would slide down to below my belly, and I kept having to pull them back up. So I finally decide to try braces (trying to sound sophisticated). That was more than 20 years ago. I wear braces on all of my pants, jeans, chinos and dress/suit pants.
I love my woolen Buccanoy pants by Pike Brothers. They come with suspender buttons and a slightly higher waist to make them feel great. Indeed, the lack of pressure around the hip is what I miss most when wearing modern style pants with belts.
@@RealMenRealStyle I personally don't like them as they seem uncomfortable. They don't seem very good for bending down. I feel a belt is better for me. Having said that, I do however think it looks more elegant. Plus, I sag my pants. Not with formal clothing but with my causal stuff. I think parents and others should stop making a big deal about this and let people dress how they like. Saging my pants and dressing in urban style clothing does not stop me from performing in my life. I am in law school now. When I wear suits I'd like to dress similar to the mob. I like urban/gangsta type clothes.
I asked a tailor to add suspender buttons to my favorite suit about 10 years ago. Wearing suspenders as opposed to a belt during a long event makes everything more comfortable AND I get a lot of compliments on the suspenders.
After decades of lower back trouble I decided to stop trying to fight gravity with friction (belts) and started counteracting it with opposing force (suspenders). My S I joint has never been happier!
@DubiousRelationalCausality honestly I've been thinking about switching over for awhile since I have similar back issues and sometimes a belt is just uncomfortable, especially when my sciatica starts acting up. This is pushing me towards getting a pair on payday for sure.
@@donovanb9020 For starting out I recommend a "cheap" set of clip on suspenders. You'll likely need to experiment with where you want them to attach to your pants, and you'll definitely need to experiment with the strap length. Once you have everything adjusted how you want you can easily throw a tape measure over your shoulder (while wearing your pants + cheap suspenders) and measure from the back anchor point to the front anchor point, which will tell you what strap length you need when ordering "nicer" suspenders. Oh, and keep in mind that the attachments "add" to the strap length. Clip ons will add roughly 1 inch of length front and back, and button ons (preferable) will add about 3 inches front and back.
Honestly I love the look of some great cut trousers, a shirt, waistcoat and suspenders. I would totally adore my husband if he wore that 😅. I have started to wear big flowing skirts a few years back. I make them myself, and they are remodeled after victorian walking skirts with a lot of pleating in the back. They are super comfy and elegant but also heavy as heck because of the extra fabric needed for the pleats. I am honestly considering getting some cool suspenders to keep the heavy skirt up, and sew myself some waistcoat to go with them. Because female 1920's mob-boss is a style I could get behind 😅.
I don't think I've seen suspenders in a store for 15 years at least and last time I wore them was in the 90s. Very informative video, thank you. I will look out for suspenders and see and try to feel how they fit, got some trousers that have no belt loops
This has been an eye opener. When I was younger around 1990's my parents made me wear suspenders almost all the time for school, only now did I realize that it was because my trousers had high rise back then!
I love suspenders for comfort in any setting and the style. It also gives you something else to do with your hands when you're fidgety. They're nice. I only have one 2" wide elastic with an X back style, leather in the center and stainless clasps. I paid extra for the durability and the most important detail are clasps that don't slip.
One advantage of a belt is that if you have to do a #2, you don't have to take off your jacket! I say this as a woman who remembers that brief time in the 1970's when leotards were worn as blouses. They looked sleek and smooth, but if you had to use the restroom, you had to strip almost completely. Not fun on a cold day, especially in a public restroom. Bodysuits (that snapped at the crotch) were a later compromise. But those snaps sometimes gave way at inopportune times. And even if they held, they still left a wad of fabric (two layers of material, two packets, 2-3 snaps) between the legs.
Great video, I am in my 30s and I prefer wearing suspenders and belt tbh. I’m also about the size of a pencil though and struggle to keep pants up with just a belt, unless I want it tight enough to carve into me. The fact that suspenders are made to keep things at a higher waist line explains why I also use a belt with them, to keep them at the lower waist line
Got recommended this video and watched it. I once wore suspenders for work and I knew instantly the answer from the beginning. That was one of the first things I had noticed back when I wore them. You need to loosen them a lot so it doesn't pull your pants up too much.
I wear suspenders with regular trousers and nobody seems concerned about it. It's more comfy, and I never have to adjust them throughout the day. And in the winter when I add a worm underwear layer, I can wear suspenders under my shirts and nobody gets to see a thing. They were cheaper too, got a pair for half the price of a belt at the Vietnamese store in our building.
It’s definitely way more comfortable and practical! I get my trousers and bracers from reenactment clothing companies and maybe do some modifications from there, you kinda have to learn what to look for as the quality of the clothing varies a great deal.
I have only worn suspenders a couple times, but my dad tried them and really likes them. There is a big downside that was not mentioned in this video. Clip on suspenders will damage the spot where they clip onto pants. I can imagine the straps might damage the fabric of your shirt at the shoulders, too.
Semper Fidelis, Devil Dog! I have 2 sets of suspenders. 1 brown 1 black. Wore them once or twice but not in years. You're right, they just didn't work right with modern trousers. I was not able to identify why...but i knew it felt wrong.
I started wearing suspenders about two years ago, and now use them about half the time I go out. So much more comfortable than a belt and I always get compliments on them as well.
As a roofer I wear suspenders every day and use a belt just over the trousers, or rain jacket to have my tools on. similar to the belt kit in the militaries
I started wearing them at work in a warehouse as I have a flat backside and a belt had to be very tight to hold up my trousers. They would always slip down when I was lifting and lowering stuff. Not looked back since
I still have half a dozen pair of suspenders... classic look and feel. Im 98% blue jeans and t shirts now, but still have my nice stuff from earlier days.
I bought suspenders for a Victorian lace gothic outfit i put together. It takes some getting used to, but i do forget im wearing them after awhile. I also use a derby hat, walking cane, pocket watch, and cloak, (when its cold), with that outfit. People seem to like it. However, im a belt buckle kinda person, so im sticking with a belt for the time being since i also dont wear collared shirts super often.
To me, the main problems with suspenders are that if they are poorly fited it will hurt you A LOT, especially if the material is bad, so you have to be carefull with what you buy unlike belts that are super easy to ajust. The fact that 99% of the time I don't use formal clothing, and because of that suspender wouldn't make sense, like suspenders with a T-shirt and jeans just looks a bit weird in most cases, and since I don't have a jacket they would have to be all around me in plain view all off the time, I live in a hot area and wouldn't make sense to cover myself more
I got a pair of suspenders from dulath traders and they kind of look like a gun harness. A coworker suggested suspenders when I was working at a feed/hardware store and they have been extremely helpful for manual labor. I actually own a few pairs of pants without belt buckles and a drawstring isnt enough to keep them secure during heavy activity so they have been really useful.
I flip between suspenders and belts. They both have ups and downs. The belt slips or squeezes, while suspenders tend to dig into my shoulders and cause back pain the day after.

traitor why no suspenders
he dissed the belt so hard he actually advertised it
I got a pair of suspenders to cosplay Nanami from Jujutsu Kaisen and its been a part of my wardrobe ever since, I have two now, one brown one black
A lot of these wardrobe changes among younger peeps seems start with cosplay pretty often, kinda awesome.
@@Newidhan My Helldivers 2 cosplay has a pair of suspenders to keep the "jacket bottom" (skirt) up.
But Nanami himself doesn't wear suspenders tho. Those are shoulder straps from an armpit holster he repurposed to carry his knife on his back. He has a belt on his pants
@Newidhan Regardless of whether Nanami wore suspenders, that's very based 👍
someday the suspenders, cape, and walking cane will all come back in style.
i'm doing my part, gentlesirs.
Nah, was talking to a coworker the other day, I see someone in a cape I'm out. Any other article of clothing isn't as alarming, would be weird but people be weird. Someone's wearing a cape in public though, that's never good news.
cane is just practical, suspenders most definitely, but capes idk, maybe in dustier and frequently cold areas but anywhere else that's hot, humid, or rainy? not likely.
@@LetMeFLY649 An oiled cloak would be somewhat useful in rain, though we already have more practical options.
When someone flaunts their refusal to conform to social norms, it raises red flags that they may be a sociopath and thus dangerous.
and heels I want my high heels back!
I recently started wearing suspenders. Now I don't want to wear a belt any more.
Right? I love suspenders.
There’s no going back once you try out the suspenders
Me too.. I am sick of this belt thing that I've to pull up like a kid, every time I getout of the car or a chair.
I have been wearing suspenders for a couple of months, and I'm am like them.
Same... Did it for practical reasons at work... Now I'm in love with it.
You don't just unclip the suspenders? It's what I do if I am wearing suspenders under a bunch of layers.
You know what time it is boys. Time to bring it back
Yeah, my parents and grandparents use belts. So old fashioned!

I have the exact same thing but with IBS
I have Crohn's and never even thought about getting suspenders before now.
Thank you for the great idea brü
I never thought about using suspenders before but I didnt know it helped with crohns, ill give em a try

Starting eat carnivore and go back to the belts. Will look fit and less silly.
My only excuse to useing a belt is that i lose weight and now all of my pants are bigger, and i mean really
So the belt keeps them around my hips better than a suspender that i would use when i get smaller pants
If your gut is cinched down tight by a belt you are using it wrong.
I started wearing suspenders in my early 20s. I am 49. I realized all the positives you listed back then and never went back.
@@Stealth86651 im athletic build and belts keep grabbing my happy trail (blue collar)
There are suspenders for carpenters that kilo to your belt so you can wear a belt loose and still be able to hang tools on your pants.
Why not just wear lowers?
Same for white collar workers. Not having a somewhat stiff piece of leather around your waist makes sitting more comfortable
Started using suspenders with my work scrubs. Used to only wear them for special events but now i like them to show off.
I've been wanting to do this!
Drawbacks are:
-if I am wearing a vest while in the bathroom and need to lower my trousers, I have to take the vest off (and hope the stall has a coathook); and
-a pair of silk suspenders, worn 3-5 times per week, will show serious wear after about six months; and they aren’t cheap.
Dillards is the best. Where I live, they had a green tag=$3 sale so I ended up getting a alot of shirts, and 10 neckties for less than $100.

@@MatthewSmith-cp3hu I use buttons for all of mine. You have to sew them in, but it's much more comfortable.
What is Dillards? Sounds like a British thing
I wear suspenders all the time. Love them
Been wearing suspenders for the last 4 years.
My 100 year old grandfather still wear suspenders and I just bought some.

Bro did not watch the video
@@agonizin bro did not need to. It's called knowing things
so the reason suspenders don't work with low waist lines is that it crumples your shirt?
@@Linck192 no. It's harder to keep your shirt tucked into your pants.
Easy to do. Buy "batchelor buttons" which are the buttons on jeans. Essentially they are rivets, easy to fit.
@ it’s the modern solution to modern trousers not usually coming with suspended buttons. The clips do an okay job but aren’t as good as the buttons.

Perfect timing! I was just looking into switching to suspenders
Fashion history is so fascinating and seriously underrated.

I wear suspender at school and the only one to do so. My schoolmates even asked me why I wear one haha.

@smallcheesebread6531 We tuck in our uniforms and I think a suspender would be a good match.
Instead of one or the other
hi kacpa

Not sure why the vid popped up on my homepage but I found this absolutely fascinating.

For a while, we had early breastplates and loricca segmentata and those were strapped in a way that distributed the weight better, but then going to chainmail it would have a belt around the abdomen which made for very poor weight distribution (very tiring on your waist and shoulders)
By the time brigandine cuirasses became a thing, those would be using straps all along the body to help on weight distribution and make it much more comfortable to wear and that carried over to full plate armor as well.
(We're similar in size so the vintage pants are mine now)
I actually wear both... I wear the belt to not look weird in public, but the suspenders to keep my pants up!
@@alemar1122 suspenders definitely make you stand out, but you dont look 'weird'
i'm not trying to be mean, i'm very serious about this: I very rarely care about how men look, but when I see a belt and suspenders at the same time it's one of the very few things on men I think looks absolutely silly.

I have been wearing Y back suspenders/braces for nearly 5 years now. They are so comfortable.
Bill Lumberg in the movie office space wore suspenders with a belt. A fashion faux paux
@@phillyfan-182 Yeah...
@@bcubed72 In the UK its the same only we would say "belt and braces". "suspenders" usually means something else over here.
Great storytelling Antonio, really enjoyable
@@RealMenRealStyle I personally don't like them as they seem uncomfortable. They don't seem very good for bending down. I feel a belt is better for me. Having said that, I do however think it looks more elegant. Plus, I sag my pants. Not with formal clothing but with my causal stuff. I think parents and others should stop making a big deal about this and let people dress how they like. Saging my pants and dressing in urban style clothing does not stop me from performing in my life. I am in law school now. When I wear suits I'd like to dress similar to the mob. I like urban/gangsta type clothes.
@pranavpillai7778 no one's stopping you from that. And no one forces you either. No point for your comment.
@@DubiousRelationalCausality same here. Belts are brutal and I am never going back.
@@DubiousRelationalCausality Good to know, thanks.
With my perfect BMI I just never needed more than a belt since I was either skinny or fit. Though I like the almost detective look.
So glad you brought back "The Man Without Fear" intro music.
Gentlemen’s Essential Accessory
I don't think I've seen suspenders in a store for 15 years at least and last time I wore them was in the 90s. Very informative video, thank you. I will look out for suspenders and see and try to feel how they fit, got some trousers that have no belt loops
This has been an eye opener. When I was younger around 1990's my parents made me wear suspenders almost all the time for school, only now did I realize that it was because my trousers had high rise back then!
I’ve been using Anson belts for years. They are amazing. Definitely try them if you haven’t.
I'm a woman so not really the target audience for suspenders, but I will say this, I really like the look of a man in suspenders 👍
I enjoy wearing matching suspenders and bow ties to church. It is a bit quirky, but I do get lots of compliments! Fascinating history!
You have convinced to purchase an Anson belt and suspender in one short video. Good job.
Loved the history lesson 👌🏼 worth having a pair of pants designed for them
This video made me interested in buying and start wearing suspenders 😃.
It may help prevent future back problems, and they do look classy.
Really glad your channel is still going strong.
The fact that 99% of the time I don't use formal clothing, and because of that suspender wouldn't make sense, like suspenders with a T-shirt and jeans just looks a bit weird in most cases, and since I don't have a jacket they would have to be all around me in plain view all off the time, I live in a hot area and wouldn't make sense to cover myself more
I always preferred suspenders to belts from a functional point of view, but you are right, these days it's hard to get them.
I wear work trousers with suspenders with a button down shirt. Honestly have no idea how they could have possibly gone out of style.
I love my suspenders. They're just so comfy and they also are a great conversation starter.
