These sessions could easily run as a tv series where they could switch between animated clips showing the actions in the game and the actual game with them talking and sitting with one another anyone else agree?
Ah, good to see the birth of Jim's Magic Missile™ at last. The possibility of an embarrassing miss at a crucial moment does indeed make the standard spell far more exciting! Well worth the 1gp royalty.
Did not know that this was available. Just found it today and I am loving it. It is answering so many questions I have about being a DM and the new Next addition. I think this would be great as an animation. I think if the guys at D&D did that it would have like 50 million subscribers and likes with in 1 day. Just my views.
Actually, this is 4th Edition (but 'Next' appears to be based around it so you weren't far off). Animated in the same way as the Ricky Gervais podcasts would be perfect : )
I came into this backwards, starting with 2010 (? I think). It's so funny hearing Mike talk about being a first-time player, not knowing what a d4 was.
Gregory Mull Started with the more current ones too, the live PAX sessions, it's really nice seeing Mike learning this all like we all did, I just started playing in the last month, loving it ^_^
Speaking as a DM I beg to disagree, the DM is definitely your enemy and you shouldn't trust them. The DM is analysing your personalities, your strengths and weaknesses, your assumptions and habits. The DM is going to trick you into giving all your magic items to a devil, the DM is going to sell you cursed magic items with a disguised villain, the DM is going to use rot grubs because he hates how you aren't taking these encounters seriously anymore. Granted if you have a good DM and they have been totally fair you shouldn't get salty but there's definitely a psychological war happening between what the players know about the DMs habits and what the DM knows about the players habits, both sides are going to abuse what they know sooner or later and both sides will adapt their behaviour. An escalating arms race of tricks, traps schemes and strategies. At least that's how half the games I run or play in go and I find myself restless without the adversity.
Show of hands, how many of you could write a book about a bad DM you've had? A bad DM can ruin absolutely everything. Never let someone who wants power, is a control freak, or very competitive DM. Their negative qualities are amplified astronomically. Power guy dominates everything and punishes you when you don't do what he wants, control guy makes all the decisions for you, and competitive guy tries to beat you at every turn. God help you if you find the unholy trinity of these people rolled into one. Chris Perkins, on the other hand, is the guy all DMs should aspire to be, whichever edition you play.
I remember reading an article in some old RPG magazine about a DM who started a campaign by proudly declaring that none of the party would live through it. It then went on to describe how he went nuts trying to take out the last player standing, who just kept making good rolls and managed to escape.
CP is my role model. I only cheat in favor of the players and usually don't let them know I'm doing it, but I don't do it so obviously that they figure it out and I don't do it so often that it's unrealistic or not difficult, thereby making the game less fun for them. I challenge them while supporting them. Unless a player is making the game difficult for everyone, then I may set out to kill them on purpose. ;D
+Nick Lenfent True bad players can be almost as fun ruining as a bad DM. Either through wasting time to minmax or by being a murder hobo in a campaign that isn't made for that.
Honestly I enjoy this more BECAUSE it's just a recording with no video, it leaves EVERYTHING to the imagination. I just can't get into a D&D session unless it's an animation so everything that's going on is clear and maybe even extra humorous or a recording such as this which gives more imaginative freedom to the listener.
I disagree strongly. I enjoy Critical Role 10 times more by seeing them instead of just listening to them. They have some AMAZING reactions to what is happening in the game, plus they act out their actions a lot of the time. The looks of shock on their faces when certain events happen is just golden. Best show ever.
I dig how all three of them, speaking as though it's a dead serious for real thing, refer to their rolling as a skill. If rolling is something you can effect with intent, I'm pretty sure that makes you a Witch. And I'd like to learn.
actually, rolling dice is a skill. there's a reason that competitive games involving dice (such as backgammon) have cups to put the dice it; so that people can't roll the dice a certain way to induce a favorable outcome
I love Chris Perkins and his explainations on the mechanics. "Let me explain about natural ones...It doesn't matter what you add to it, it will always miss." Lol.
Originally the rules were to include that Magic missile had an attack roll however later revised version returned magic missile to its roots. There allowing it to always hit.
This series was my first introduction to an actual DnD campaign. I had read about the game, but I never played and I never saw or got to hear people actually playing. Chris inspired me to not only play, but become a DM.
"Your DM is not your enemy." Exactly. While the scorched Earth approach can be fun, I've been part of a campaign where the DM seemed to have it out for all of us and it lead to a lot of argument and not fun play sessions. Be fair, give them a good tale, leave them wanting more.
"He's gotta be cheating back there." Technically, the DM can't cheat. It's encouraged to make judgment calls on any of their dice rolls and if they even roll at all.
Shadow Wolf I had a party member (5e Human War Cleric with pole arm master feat) hit a 1 on his glaive that he was attacking while behind me to an ogre in front of me, and then with his roll + modifier got a 19 towards me...luckily I had a 20 ac with my shield equipped (I was a lvl 3 human eldritch knight with medium armor master feat, scale mail, and defensive fighting style, which with my 17 dex gives me an 18 without my shield).
it was a two vs four fight in second edition advanced dungeons and dragons but I've seen a party I was DM'ing for flat out die to goblins. It was their first campaign so I gave them many bonuses and they even had an ambush on the goblins but hey bad rolls are bad rolls. at least I had a contingency plan where an amulet I gave them earlier would send them to an alternate dimension where they didn't die.
It would likely make them go from being backround listening to something much more people would enjoy and perhaps get into the spirit of the game. I'm never against bringing more people into the folds of DnD.

I have had some great times with DMs actively trying to kill a party. Not that they would vindictively try to kill us, but definitely make sure we had thought out our actions deeply. Too many funny and very avoidable deaths were had by party members. I think one player died a total of 11 times on campaign. He really liked acting impulsively.

Also cantrips are actually worth a damn. There is no limit to how often you can cast them, and the damaging ones scale up in damage every 5th level. Thac0 never was a big issue to me but I will admit the new editions are simpler. However I sort of dislike how simple it is due to some things getting left out.
I agree the DM isn't your enemy. Depending on the campaign things should be difficult but never impossible. Hell when a PC dies I usually hate it as a DM because not only do they lose their character but I lose the time I spent with them playing out the story of that person. And this is why all the 20's I've been rolling in my recent campaign are a bit annoying...
If you're playing a game where the player characters are the only heroes around I could see how dying could be a bummer for a dm. I try to be impartial as a dm, sometimes the dice don't favor you and you die. I know that when I'm playing and realize that the dm is going out of their way to avoid killing players I lose all interest in playing. If there's no chance of risk the game becomes boring as hell.
RPGGhoul Actually required an attack roll, but that was changed in some later revisions of 4th edition. It made a sort of sense with the inclusion of minions, to be fair. 1-hit point enemies that you could pick off with a single missile in a three-missile spell you can cast every turn? My group's wizard had the job of taking out three minions per turn in fights early on (I was using later rules long after the first books were out), so I ended up rebalancing it several times, sometimes with attack rolls, sometimes without, different damage... 4E was an interesting time. You should see what 5th is like if you haven't already. It has all the best parts of all the editions.
OnlyTwoShoes Yeah, 4E had a lot of different versions of the spell, some of them had you rolling 1d4 with your Int modifier, others were straight damage, it was weird.
so are they playing 4th or 5th edition? Because it sounds like it uses specific bonus numbers insted of advantage, and i know 5e doesnt use bonus as much right?
Dear Chris Perkins, playing a cleric as a healing machine IS FUN ... if you have the right personality for it and making them do that less - which 4e did - is bad. You are just catering to the idiots who dont want to work for their fun ... just like WoW "had to" make other (all) classes able to tank just as well as a Warrior and all healing classes able to heal just as well as clerics an druids ... because kids were whining and unwilling to "work for the team". Bumping this back to life because Acquisitions Inc. is way awesome. The players, the characters, the DM, all of it is super awesome.
