I agree, Chris has developed a style that works very well with podcasting though - he uses phrases like "the goblin over by the door" rather than "this guy here", which makes it a lot easier to visualise for everyone.
Jim is so powerful that his power spiralled up to infinity, then circled around to -infinity, then back to 0, then to 5. That isn’t how maths works, but that’s how powerful he is. Jim doesn’t conform to the laws of physics and mathematics, they conform to him
The riddle was: A wondrous treasure, Valued by all, sought by many. Found in both victory and defeat, Yet never at the bottom of a treasure chest. It marches before you like a herald, And lives long after you are gone. Of what do I speak?
Thought this vid was mislabeled and was another adventure altogether when I didn't hear Chris anywhere. I'm like, "Where's the one I was listening too!?!" Then I read the comments... Chris was the only one I recognize by voice so far... Well, here we go! (presses play)
Woah guys. Calm your jets. Be nice to the guest DM. You don't know anything about him.. How long he's been playing, how comfortable he is around an unfamiliar table... just give the guy a break. At least he was nice enough to run the game and while you're all busy pointing out his mistakes, the guy does a lot of things right too. Also, if the group had fun, than he was a success and I don't hear anyone in Aquisitions Inc. complaining. They sound fully into it. The other benefit to a game that's not as fast pace like this is it's easier for beginning players to follow. It's a fun campaign. I love listening to these guys come into their own and thus is all part of that building up process. Chris comes back for season two. So chill and give the guy a chance. Focus on his strengths instead of what you feel are his weaknesses just because it's not what you are use to. Let him get his footing. Things pick up.
Fighting Games Forever I used to run with a group of people obsessed with following the rules to the T. It's nice and all but it sucks the fun out of the game when you have a fun idea and the DM shuts it down purely because the rules don't apply.
I'm glad you put these here and I found this so I can see how this entertaining group came together. Also: goblin as a thrown weapon = Slurpy? Is that you?
My DM style is very similar to Perkin's, so I love listening to his podcasts. They have just the right amount of descriptions, and move at a good pace. They always give you a sense of urgency, but never feel rushed in those "tense" situations.
Jim is making the sound of a dragon to scare off whatever is on the other side of the door. But what if whats on the other side of the door is a horny dragon Well then Jim dropped the ball.
>Joke was made seven months ago >Humor is based on opinion. For example, a lot of people like Frasier. I find it ass boring. >You're being a jerk for no good reason >Why you do this?
You're not the only one I've heard complain about that. I think it's good to see examples of an easy going table like this. Groups vary in rigidity and loose atmospheres. I sort of like it more laid back like this, as long as the DM himself doesn't seem to mind, than it doesn't bother me either. I'm okay with either way though. I take sort of a "when in Rome" approach to any table. Sort of feel out the group dynamic. If no one minds than its cool. If getting interrupted bothers someone, than people can be mindful of that, considering that interrupting is a cultural nuance, I try to remember other people live differently and just let it go.
hes a dick, plain and simple. and yet the neverwinter game designers ( and wizards of the coast )actually thought it was a good to include him an ac inc IN the game....
JD Kinkead the wizard he referred to was jim darkmagic, he had moved up there to cast. hence he attacked jim immediately following that comment he just missed. I know this is a very late comment but for future readers.
that voice....is james the guy from the other dnd pod casts (not AQI)....there was one where he was cleric of lathander....??? is that the same guy? no pics and all.
Erm...no he isn't? This DM is James Wyatt, who works alongside Chris Perkins at Wizards of the Coast. The DM for HarmonQuest is Spencer Crittenden, who has worked with Dan Harmon a lot on many of his shows and films
just found these after watching the pax 2011/12/13 so starting from the beginning just thought i should have posted on the first vid but hey ho and Ty for posting these subbed :)
"20 doesn't hit?" I am weirded out that an undead has the armor class of a dragon. Ac 20+ is usually reserved for cr 6+ or glass cannons. Or is this a 4th edition thing?
For context, In 5th edition on dnd beyond with all books included, there are 12 monsters under cr 6 that have a 20 or higher armor class. There are more playable classes than that. Just saying.
Looking at the 4e monster manual there's 2 zombies that are LVL 6 & 8 with AC 22 and 20 respectively. I haven't looked into how Cr from 5e and lvls from 4e relate, but relatively low level things with high ac might be a 4e thing. The base 4e ghoul (I think that's what this is) has an AC of 21 and is level 5. So it does seem to be a thing in 4e. I think the reasoning is that they have fortitude, will and reflexes as well as AC and every class had abilities that could hit different things other than AC.
Lol stats were higher in both 3rd and 4th, though 4th was higher than 3rd too. 5th takes things way down and basically stays there. But even back in 3rd there were mid level monsters with AC around 30 and well above
this scenario seems really interesting... but Chris is definitely the better DM. i mean they just spent 40 minutes swatting away zombies with no progression... I get that they're supposed to be overwhelmed by zombies, but that's sort of boring...
u know what, poor dungeon master. he tryed his best and tbh he did fine, i still enjoyed his style. comments are bashing on him for trying new things, whats all that about? dnd community is better than this edit: grammar fixs
Looking at the 5e monster manual, I don't understanding what monster the DM thinks he's running. Unless the Ghoul took some major nerfing since 4e, it's not a ghoul they're fighting. Both an 18 and 20 miss on the opportunity attacks made by Binwin? At that point I'd have to question where he's got the monsters AC of 21 from?
Back in forth edition attacking against AC was not the only way to hurt someone if you listen to the earlier videos they do go over reflex will and fortitude saves as well so having a monster with a 21 AC at low level was a good clue that maybe you needed to use a different type of attack also if I remember correctly 4th edition had a lot more options as far as character building where you could pick and choose dozens of different sub powers and abilities
God I knew Scott didn't listen at all in the later podcast, but this is horrible. You think being on a podcast he'd pay attention at LEAST a little instead of drawing, eating, and slurping every session 🙃
I like listening to Jerry, Mike and Scott....but I really dislike James Wyatt as the DM. I have no idea why the hell they switched out Chris Perkins for Wyatt....He just seems too erratic, his story telling is broken up like crazy, and he just seems to push them through to quickly, like it's all rushed. And his descriptions....terrible.
Shockingly some of the most boring combat in all of AI. Unfortunately, this GMs style seems very opposite to CP's eloquent and talented improv. I find his voice and hard to take the longer I listen to it much like his mannerisms. Reminds me of aged K. Hepburn in some moments. He may know the rules (every time he recites rules his voices changes and becomes much better), but he does not have a gift for descriptions of any kind (monster behaviour, architectural, etc.). Though his attitude is easy going, his comments seem to highlight player failures and his casual sarcasm destroys any chance of mood or atmosphere in the scenes. Ex. "That's not gonna do it ...", To player: "... monsters come around the corner and they say, "Roll Initiative!", "And it doesn't really matter ...", and finally "You're still immobilized, the ghoul likes that ...". This is some of the MOST boring combat to listen to in all of AI. Thanks for letting me know that Chris returns in Season 2.
i always hated this episode when scott says hes "super" catholic. unless he was joking, this usually just says "im homophobic" to me. hope thats not the case.
I agree, Chris has developed a style that works very well with podcasting though - he uses phrases like "the goblin over by the door" rather than "this guy here", which makes it a lot easier to visualise for everyone.
"5 DAMAGE? Jim goes to the bathroom and does 5 damage."
"That other DM was Bush League".
~Scott, at about the 41:25 mark, referring to Chris Perkins.
This is the DM who runs level 3 zombies with reflex and AC numbers over 20.
Im just waiting for Jim Darkmagic to become a demi God so i can base a religion around him... He is by far my favorite
All hail Jim Darkmagic
Jim doesn't need to be a god for you to worship him. That's the true power he holds.
Jim is so powerful that his power spiralled up to infinity, then circled around to -infinity, then back to 0, then to 5.
That isn’t how maths works, but that’s how powerful he is. Jim doesn’t conform to the laws of physics and mathematics, they conform to him

Why was there a change at all? The sudden change in the flow of the narrative was a little jarring.
You know the worst aspect of D&D? Fucking nerd rules lawyers. Fun trumps rules at my table and if you don't like it go find yourself another game.
Fighting Games Forever I used to run with a group of people obsessed with following the rules to the T. It's nice and all but it sucks the fun out of the game when you have a fun idea and the DM shuts it down purely because the rules don't apply.

That ghoul would have to have a wicked dex or some serious armor to have such a high armor class.
I'm guessing dex because he went first
Some monsters have natural AC bonuses. Maybe it has something to do with that.
My DM style is very similar to Perkin's, so I love listening to his podcasts. They have just the right amount of descriptions, and move at a good pace. They always give you a sense of urgency, but never feel rushed in those "tense" situations.

I hate how Jerry interrupts DMs every time they go into narrative. It's funny sometimes, but he does it ALL THE TIME.
