That Jonas Bros song sounds a bit like Wham's "Last Christmas."
That‘s what I just wanted to write here.
YES!! That's it!
I agree - it's likely 'last Christmas' is the song Rick was thinking of.
I was actually thinking of Daft Punk - Instant Crush
Yes!
good thing BTS can actually sing live, Butter is actually so damn easy for them lmao if some of yall don't know much about BTS, just know the hit songs aren't all BTS can show, they're very artsy actually but i also appreciate when they come with a lighter pop song
They can dance live
@@eroskamishiro711 they can, while live singing. they never lip sync, their stamina is out of this world
no they're not babygirl. they're not very artsy. I'm sorry.
@@grethi8110 did my comment make you this irritated you had to come here calling me babygirl and saying sorry for "debunking" what i think about BTS? then i'm surely saying the right thing if i made such reaction happen.
anyways, BTS are very artsy and inspiring people who brings literature, visual art and pop culture together (see "Connect BTS" and "Black Swan" for reference)
@@grethi8110 In their discography you'll find very introspective songs. They might surprise you because there are stereotypes people have when BTS are given the label "typical pop boy band" when they actually aren't
Your knowledge of music and the ability to pick up chords and patterns this easily is amazing! Very fascinating to watch you do and enjoy your thing!
That’s what happens when you combine perfect pitch, relative pitch and many years of experience
It's one of my fav parts of his videos. "oh yeah that's basically this song... and just starts playing over it"
Yeah, kind of mind blowing, really. I'm pretty sure Rick is an alien from a planet with a more advanced brain.
It's really not that hard what he's doing here. These songs are very predictable and basic musical ability will allow anyone to do this. Rick is great though, but especially at figuring things out that aren't predictable 4 chord progressions etc
Rick, 5 seconds into a song: “Got it”. The man is a music beast. I bought the ear training course and I too will be able to do this one day (although if it takes me 25 years I will need to live to 93). Wish me luck.
i hope you live to 93, dude.
Good luck!
For me, 25 years will be 86. I'm glad I'm not the only geezer on here. 😁
You’ll get it, friend! Perhaps even way sooner than that. I feel like it’s a lot more instinctual than we think even though knowing theory does help. I’m a music teacher and I’ve noticed several children are able to do the same, at perhaps a more elementary level, but the ability is there.
You got this, pal!
I'd be 42
Honestly, i watched this because of the BTS in the thumbnail but i really enjoyed your review throughout the video even though I'm don't know that much about music production. Subscribed!
clickbait eh
@@sonnimonni2482 Art of UA-cam
Me too.
Guitar is reclaiming the throne muhaha 🎸
I read that in your voice.
Shred,you're here? muahahahha
HAIL SATIN
I hope shred i really hope
But it’s going to be mostly in pop punk, just to slap us in the face
6:33 the chord change kind of reminded me of Instant Crush (Daft Punk), it came right to mind because it uses similar amount of compression
Totally agree with you!
Instant Crush mixed with Last Christmas
Exactly!
Yup that's it
Also reminds me of circles by Post Malone
I personally run far away from pop on most occasions, but BTS drew me in so easily. And they're not just one same sound, they try so many different things, and their solo stuff they fully produce themselves varies even more widely depending on the individual you're listening to. Plus they really love what they do and want it done to the highest standard, and you can tell
I am sure BTS is really amazing. It is also produced by proffessionals. You take the best looking singers and dancers. Train them until they fall asleep. Add to that great music writers, choreographs, producers, decades of experience and you have BTS.
Back in 2019 when concerts were still happening I went to about 30 different concerts and 2 of those were P!nk and BTS. Out of all the different artists I saw around the world BTS was the best. P!nk, Metallica, Jimmy Buffett, Barenaked Ladies are all in my top 10 but BTS was the #1 concert for me. Best show out of all of them.
Bts really does know how to put on a show :D
From BoyzIIMen to Radiohead, out of all the concerts I’ve been to, BTS has been the best 🥰
Same. I've been to 13 different concerts in 2019 and BTS were easily the best (I've been to both shows in wembley stadium). Other concerts I've been to are Ed Sheeran, Bon Jovi, P!nk, Lewis Capaldi and also few kpop artists and all of them were great but BTS is just something else.
You guys have me feeling a teeny bit envious. Over the years, I've been to a number of concerts, but I've never gotten to see BTS, Metallica, P!nk, BoyzIIMen.... I did see a lot of older groups, Jimmy Buffett, Bon Jovi, Ozzy, The Police, David Bowie, Digital Underground, Violent Femmes, Chicago....on and on. I love hearing about the different music people like, who also enjoy BTS. This is my favorite thread of the day.😊
I want to see them live SOOOO bad!!!!! 😭😭😭 like seriously take my life savings, I wanna be front row lol
"Straight pop music but execution is perfect."
That's how one should describe pop songs coming from BTS. Huge respect to you sir!
Exactly
Around 2008 K-Pop's production quality started to overtake Western Pop's and it's been that way eversince. I don't think it's exclusive to BTS. In fact Blackpink and LOONA have slightly better production iirc.
BTS In a whole makes more than what was given on they're only two English tracks. They are truly professional and their music in a whole They can do anything from Pop Rock, Neo Soul, Hip-hop, Contemporary, Jazz, and R&B.
@@aahfeeki I think your comment is a bit unrelated to my point and to the video itself. I didn't say that BTS started it, what I said is that BTS pop songs are straight pop music woth perfect execution. And I just quoted the reactors actual opinion. So what's your point of shoving your faves in this comment section and video? I notice that Blackpink and Loona stans always comment something irrelevant to the video, not to mention that some are attacking small reactors and saying they are using them to gain profit. I really don't get your point so don't start with me.
@@cynthiaramos-lugo928 Also, the way they use their voices to sing about the issues that are being suppressed by the people in power. The way they referenced Demian and Map of the Soul. They are not only KPOP idols, they are also artists.
“I know Pink, I don’t know Willow” ☺️ Willow is her little girl in the picture on the cover, but Rick has already learnt that by now I guess
This top 10 is cool, refreshing to see. Really different from the Spotify ones. Proves that great pop music is still being done and people actually like it. Loved this one.
Like others said, Jonas Brothers sounds like “Last Christmas” and “Lost in Love”.
I’m also reminded of “Can’t Smile Without You” by Barry Manilow.
Lost in love¡¡¡ totally
Yes, you nailed it with the Manilow reference. I bet that's what Rick was thinking.
If you only knew... what I'm going through...
Yep, Lost in Love for sure.
@@manderse12 That's what popped into my head.
BTS brought me here, and i really enjoyed everything. 💜

Same. This guy is talented.💜
is there auto tun in BTS song Butter ??
@@Riaronny yep
@@Riaronny I think so, in some parts.
Not only does Pink have a beautiful voice, she also does a mean trapeze.
I know absolutely nothing about music but I watch your videos. You seem to have so much fun, passion and knowledge of music, it's amazing to watch. Thank you.
It amazes me how someone can just listen to a song for the first time and play it on an instrument right away, loved this!
Its having an ear for music. Its a natural born talent. I've met a small girl who can memorize 10 sheets of a song with just one hearing and play it back every note in place. Its not generic memorization capability, but only for music. its like they have a music recorder in the brain. Every other thing like studying for school stuff are normal.
@@babyj4087 woww, huge respect for that small girl. I cant even remember chains of number n she remember sheets of notes. Respect
@@trangbui8579 she's my daughter. Haha. She is also ARMY 😁
That´s Rick for you....he actually has a teaching course on how to do this / get better at it.
@@babyj4087 Yes there was some natural talent, but there have been years of hard work on top of that. Ear training, scale and arpeggio practice, learning a vast repertoire of music. He went to Berkeley for jazz. Jazz involves very sophisticated harmony and melody with constantly shifting tonal centres. Just wanted to point out this isn't the result of a "gift from god", this is the result of a lot of hard work.
Maybe Rick can do a new series about the present pop charts: "What Makes This Song Ok."
Spot on Richard! Or better still, this is the “dreck” being produced today. Utter rubbish.
i was thinking..."what makes this song copied crap?"
But yet, he seems very enthusiastic about these songs. Simple songs can also be very good.
Or relate it to his next video "why is this pop song so boring."
or why when songs were written by one or 2 people, great music was made while songs written by 11 writers all suck.
As a counterpoint to Pat Finnerty's What Makes This Song Stink
I just like the aspect of seeing how you figure things out and your chords and inversions, and your tones, subtle nuances….it’s a guitar lesson really. I have your ear training guide and am about halfway through it. These videos augment your training lessons. So great!
Watching you insta-learn the songs makes me nostalgic for my jamming-with-the-boys days. We often would learn songs on the spot, but I admired the guitarists & bassists who would pick it up way quicker than me, the keybroad. 😁💋
That jonas brothers song sounds just like Daft Punk "Instant Crush", even the voices are similar to the fx used on Julian Casablanca's voice
Yaaaaaas that's what I thought
I agree
Damn, the even the tone is ripped off
Exactly what I thought
I was just about to say that lol
"Lost in love" by Air Supply is the melody he's looking for for that Jonas Brothers tune. (And theres a bit of "last Christmas" in there too)
That's correct, I think.
That's it!
Yep. I was yelling at the TV screen LOL. "Come on, Rick!" :D
Instant crush daft punk.
Barry Manilow I just can't smile without you
So much fun to hear you put in lovely guitar backing just off the top of your hat...you having FUN and sounding great. Hats off, Rick
Hey Rick, I would love to see a series where you compare artists live performance and production vs studio recording.
RIck remixing the Jonas Brothers song playing The Police over it is priceless.
And the other song melody within the Jonas Bros tune that Rick was nearing is Lost In Love by Air Supply
@@jimdieselpepe4604 thank you, that was bugging us!
@@jimdieselpepe4604 I was also hearing Last Christmas by Wham there.
I actually quite liked The Police riff over the Jonas Brothers song
And there's vibes at the chorus of Instant Crush from Daft Punk.
The difference between Spotify and iTunes: On Spotify the algorithm pushes music toward the listeners and in iTunes the people choose for themselves.
A lot of these songs are not my style, but the difference in quality between this list and the Spotify list is substantial.
Spotify has search too. I almost never listen to what it recommends to me and I bet a lot of people don't
@@JakobKenda I certainly don't!
Heh. And then there's bandcamp. Which on the whole is sixty four times better than the dreck on pop radio.
Discover Weekly is pretty good honestly
Rick you are such an inspiration, I wish one day i might be able to identify the key of the song and just pickup the guitar and go along with the music just like you
I love your cover versions on guitar. You always find the melodies in this music that I'm not hearing.
The autotune for BTS is more a stylistic choice and actually not really needed as the singers are very good and the main singer seems to have perfect pitch or atleast as close as you can get.
Yoo and thats the reason many people prefer to watch or listen the live version of bts songs more than studio version because their voice is very clear and stable throughout whole performance.

I love these top 10 videos.
I think a big part of the difference is the difference in the demographics and type of people who prefer to buy music vs stream it. I listen to all sorts on Spotify, but I still buy songs on iTunes (and even CD, if you would believe) - the songs I buy are much more selective and lean towards different genres than the music I stream.
Something I've been listening to recently is a selection of playlists on Spotify based on student listening patterns from different universities and colleges. I've been finding it really interesting, especially since many of them bear little resemblance at all to the top 10/top 100 lists on Spotify, and vary massively between the different playlists/universities. My alumni university isn't one that's listed, but I've been loving going through some of the others. They've been great for finding different pieces that I do end up buying in the end.
I think you do a kick ass job of reviewing these. Great insight! Love it or hate it. Keep em coming.💪🏻
I have never listened to K-Pop, but for some reason I love BTS. 🤷🏻♀️💜
You’re amazingly talented at picking up the tunes on your guitar so quickly.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This is one of the reasons we (BTS fans) call their music BTSPOP, because they're really different
This is me. I don't like kpop. I'm into alternative music, rock, indie and then I love BTS.
Me too bts only !!! Their music is all encompassing and different from the rest of kpop - they are their own genre
thank you so much for opening your hearts and listen to BTS
You must have heard gangnam style at some point. It’s also kpop 😂
My theory is that the demographic that buys music isn't into the same music as the demographic that streams music. Probably why this is so much more different from the Spotify lists
Spotify is free so they are usually casual music listeners. Itunes users are genuine music lovers therefore dare I say have better taste.
Probably older too, but since Spotify made it so Free accounts cant just pick songs to play and only allows them to make and play playlists means the Free people are less likely to hear the exact song they want to hear, just songs they like, and maybe the exact song is in there. It sucks now. Poor people like me gotta go to UA-cam to play exactly what I want, exactly when I want it.
@@ALucas73 yeah thats how music works, spotify is like 3 bucks a month
So people who still pay for music have a more refined taste in music? I'd say after watching this video Q.E.D.
Oh yeah, and not everyone wants to sell their kidneys to buy Apple products
Rick you are a monster. I try to race you in recognizing the chords but you recognize them in an instant
Rick, it’s great to see someone that loves music like you do! Enjoyed this one.

The Jonás brothers song
Starts as wham’s “last Christmas “
Back beat of post Malone’s “circles”
With a some manilow “can’t smile without you” in the vocals.
Like a commercial jingle that gets stuck in your head for a day.
I also think the song may be Carly Simon's "Coming Around Again".
It also remind me of Aztec Culture's "Somewhere In My Heart" or Bee Gees "Sacred Trust"
And every breath you take by the police
"Instant crush" daft punk.
Yup, I caught the Posty part.
+ Doves, "Catch the sun"
I love this. Coming from the classical world I know nothing about pop or rock music besides YES (I did get to play viola in their symphonic tour, quite amazing it was). I did start playing flamenco guitar about 25 years ago but only play a few chord progressions in phrygian mode. This guy knows his music and has names for every part of a song, just fascinating. I guess now I will be aware of what is on the charts watching Rick's videos.
I used to work concert venue security & event staff jobs for 2 stadiums, an amphitheater, & 6 arenas. I've seen 500+ concerts across every genre imaginable. So when I tell you, YES, BTS is the BEST show/performance I've ever seen, believe it. Even if you aren't a fan, I recommend wholeheartedly that you attend a concert at least once in your life. Their concerts are bucket list tier.
So true. I come from a music family and going to concerts are tradition for us. BTS is the best concert my family has ever seen for the past 20 years.
whats so special about it?
@@tj03297 They do every kind of performances. The whole package of their diverse discography(which contains many genres and point on lyrics) performed with singing and dancing, sometimes using instruments in ballad like performance, solo performances of each members songs, Rap showdown by the rapline, hard coreo to hype up the crowd, and finally a fan encore where the whole crowd sings a fansong... They stage is well designed as well... But the most beautiful thing is all the audience as a purple ocean using army bomb(light sticks) and is so beautiful when the crowd fanchants and sing along in Korean. (Imagine singing in a language that's not much familiar to you... But they did that in non-korean countries). They proves music is a universal language. Between every performance they would talk to the crowd about the messages they want to convey and appreciate us all. The connection we feel in both audience and the performers are so unique and powerful. And the age and gender diversity in the crowd also surprises us
The Wembley was Spectacular. I am so lucky I and my entire family and friends could be able to witness it.

Can I recommend reacting to Jimin’s (BTSk) “Lie”? I think it’s 6/8, baroque/creepy haunted house, funky Beethoven, middel eastern vibe, a little Alberti-like distorted spanish guitar sound, orchestra - yet all while being a great pop song. and an amazing surprise in the chorus 😉 maybe you’ll find it interesting?

I miss it so much! The band backing their concerts are amazing
Right! Honestly I think live bands always help the boys, anytime they are accompanied by a live band you can just see them soar and there energy is through the roof

Love your opinions. I am trying to do my own music production. I play guitar into my laptop with Magix Studio 7 (very old version) with Boss multi-special effects. No drum machine, but I am considering EZ Drummer 2. I am using the 10-day free trial version. I write my own songs (sort of Zappa-type) and play every sound you hear, if you were to listen to my music, with my guitar a Squire Strat (except for drums, tried to but it took more time, so I decided I need some software}. No midi. Just audio recording. I am watching your videos over and over. When you break down the songs and analyze each part, I'm hooked.
It's funny seeing country songs in the Top 10 in the USA, because everywhere else in the world (I'm from the UK), country music doesn't really exist outside of Jolene by Dolly Parton and Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus. I've just realised that country music is absolutely huge
It doesn't exist in pop charts mostly, however, even in european countries there is a large fanbase. US and the EU combined are probably the biggest markets out there, if you account for them spending money on music. I think the UK is different in a lot of ways. It is one of the bigger music export markets and a huge influence worldwide, especially for bands.
As a country fan, I can say that no one I've met likes Achy Breaky Heart. But if you or someone else you know does, that's cool!
@@cassidythecat Oh, I don’t like it, that’s just one of the only country songs that most people know in the UK. The whole idea of modern country music and it being an alive genre is absolutely absurd to us, but after recent visits to the US I’ve realised that it rivals and infiltrates pop charts regularly
@@ParallaxRS It's not really popular here, aside from the southern states, but it only gained attraction because the older country music is dying off and it's becoming more like pop music

I would love to see you react to how these songs are performed live! as a bts army I have to say that it would make my day if you decided to react to their npr tiny desk video or the bts room video they did for festa (their debut anniversary event), as in both they sing more of their self-written songs with a live band
The start of the song Butter of BTS is similar to the start of Another One Bites The Dust by The Queen.

@@Andrew_Price it WAS Last Christmas..
I totally hear that, but the first thing I thought was maybe an ABBA song..??

Any more ideas?
IT IS Last Christmas by Wham! . I'm fed up with it so kicked right away into my mind.
If you haven't figured it out yet, I think the Marshmallow w/Jonas was Barry Manilow "Can't Smile Without You", just faster and an extra beat. It sounded familiar playing by itself but when Beato starts playing it with just the guitar it remember what it sounded like immediately! Lol 😆
I actually like Pink. She does really interesting music. I’m not surprised more than one of her songs would be in the top 10. I have Amazon prime and find lots of cool music. Most is folk in their free sampling menu. Lots of cool indie stuff. Like barnaby bright. And you obviously have a great ear for music. You’d be a lot of fun to jam with. Once I was with a group of friends and a couple had their guitars and it came to my turn, so I sang the old standard I’ll Be Seeing You and the ones on guitar weren’t familiar with the song so I sang a bit of it to them acapela until they felt comfortable coming in. It was so fun cuz they predicted different chord changes and I went with it and pulled them back, they the song would go in a direction I wasn’t expecting so I’d go with it and then lead them back. They weren’t into jazz until that night. They found out how amazing that creative process of listening and responding could be. It was so much fun!

Yh the shape you make when playing a c = c shape.
BTS of course use tune on the record for stylistic purpose, but they are amazing live! And they dance at the same time! Immaculate performers! They also did MTV unplugged and Tiny Desk
Sometimes they used auto-tune as a stylistic choice to enchance the music/voices and not so much as to correct the singer's pitch as they do sing beautifully live or not.

A little helpful input on that theme in #7: It's found in the chorus of "Can't Smile Without You" (popularized by The Carpenters and Barry Manilow in the '70s) and the verse (more or less) of "Don't Answer Me" (written and performed by The Alan Parsons Project in 1984). I have found that listening to this new stuff with youngsters is a cool way to bridge the "Generation Gap", if done in a constructive way...
Rick, I really like the way you pick up chords, chord progression even 5ths 7ths 9ths etc. I think you have a super power there, personally I know only one other guy and he ain't in your class. As you may glean by my use of proper english we are practically the same generation.
"this can't be the pop chart, there's no way... There are real instruments..." Rick Beato, May 26th, 2021 😂😂😂 I did find the real instruments refreshing for sure, even if all the songs weren't particularly to my liking, but I definitely liked this list far more than the Spotify pop charts
Any instrument is a "real" instrument. The whole "real" vs. "fake" is just arrogance. It'll be nice when we focus on actual music making only and forget the means of how it got there. After all, the electric guitar was originally considered a bastardization of the acoustic guitar. Same with the piano/harpsichord. If you want to hear acoustic guitars, fine, (I like 'em too), but they are no more "real" than any other instrument, electronic/acoustic or otherwise.
@@neilbradley the electric guitar and harpsichord still require a musician to play them. I'm not saying digital music"sucks" or is inferior to live recordings, in fact I like a lot of the electro-pop and hip hop from the 80s, but my overall musical taste favors songs which feature instruments played by musicians instead of musical parts created by software
@@chrisggoodwin777 Can't argue with personal preferences. I'm just objecting to the word "real" in this context. It's elitist and arrogant. I'll also point out that you still need a musician to drive/program electronics as well. I'm a sucker for a good live band - I tend to like acoustic guitars and a good metal riff. I also like a good techno banger.
@@neilbradley I am neither elitist nor arrogant, and you're absolutely correct; there's no arguing against one's preference, and it does take a skilled person to compile and program digital tracks (I've seen some DJs create new songs on the fly with their gear, which was amazing). I'm not disparaging anyone's creative outlet, nor should I. I thought Rick's comment was funny and interesting, so I posted it
@@chrisggoodwin777 Yeah, I didn't get a sense that you were, either. Just those who think that somehow an acoustic instrument is somehow "superior" to anything else. But I get Rick's point - it's nice to hear some played instruments (as far as we can tell, anyway) without all the artificial pitch shifting that seems to dominate so much popular music these days. But even this list had a couple with pitch correction. Overused.
Butter has a similar rhythm motive as "Another One Bites Dust"(Queen) on the verse part~
I mean, it's the simplest drum beat out there
Before Butter came out, Queen posted the teaser clip for it and tagged the artist so I think it is the same.

It took me quite an effort to recall it, myself, having spent so much time and effort trying to forget that song.

I've never been able to appreciate modern country music. I can get into some of the older stuff, but every single country song I've heard since probably 1995 has sounded like the exact same song set on a loop and its gotten to where its basically like nails on a chalkboard to me now.
Its the only genre of music that I just can't do no matter how many times I try to give it another shot. BTS puts out some catchy earworm stuff, Butter was stuck in my head so many times last year just from hearing a couple seconds of it lol.
#7's chorus sounds like "Instant crush" by Daft Punk Ft. Julian Casablancas.
Yeah, I was yelling at Rick through the screen “DAFT PUNK”

The melody in that Marshmallow and Jonas Brothers song? I was running it through my head as well, and it was on the edge of my brain for several minutes and then BOOM!
It's the verse melody for the folk song "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian!
God, I'm old.
Daft Punk's "Instant Crush" off the album Random Access Memories is the song that popped into my head the moment the chorus on #7 started.
I love the Beato superpower where he figures out chord progressions, strum patterns, melodies, and production methods in real-time and demonstrates such a deep appreciation of music of all genres. "I can hear the capo." - holy smokes, you're not normal, and it's so cool to watch you work.
It’s experience. I can do it but in no where near as good as he is lol
It's been said in other comments sections but this is a skill, not a superpower. To call it a superpower is to downplay all the hard work and practice that gets put into this kind of work. It comes easier for some people than others to be fair. However, most people can learn this skill if they put in the work it demands.
@@matthewbehr5725 I agree. I’m still able to play by ear pretty much anything I hear but I’m out of practice.
It's hysterical how well "Every Breath You Take" fit over the Jonas Bros tune. 🤣

Except the video where he reacted to WAP but I mean that song deserves a bad review
Personally I wish he would be more critical, he sounds like Homer Simpson as the food and restaurant critic everything gets 7 thumbs up.
Just last year he did a video attacking pop music for being all I IV V VI, and wishes for more variation.
It seems to me that all of the songs he does are all that same progression, and all of them are predictable. Rick is always saying I knew they were going to do this or that. That tells me no innovation and songwriting by committee.
Everything is formula and check the boxes, just as bad as modern movies.
I always wanted to ask Rick 20 years from now will you still remember any of these songs.
Rick always talks about early 90s songs but there's the nearly 30 yrs gap from then that gets no mention.
It's li km e expecting any 80s song to come up that isn't the Police.

I was hearing "Last Christmas" by Wham
One of my close friends works for iTunes and she's a great musician herself who really knows music. We went to art school together 20 years ago where she was a guitar major, but she plays so many other instruments. She writes her own music, goes on tour (she has solid fan-base in Germany), and she lives and breathes music. iTunes is selective, they hire talented people to work on their music selection, that's probably why that was surprisingly good I think.
The melody you couldn’t place was totally George Michael’s / wham “last Christmas”

Haha!
Not breaking new ground isn’t necessarily a bad thing
If every song broke new ground harmonically, well, we wouldn't have a lot of ground left to stand on, metaphorically speaking. Humans like having at least _some_ kinds of patterns in their music.
@bret4880 bret4880 Not to mention if being harmonically derivative is a bad thing, many rhythm change tunes, renaissance motets, and quite a lot of Bach’s preludes are in the drain...
B ...I agree. Many a good song has been written with C F and G or E, A and D.
Is that little bit of music that reminded Rick of a older song (which he couldn't get) Wham!'s "Last Christmas"?

The word “formulaic” comes to mind.
The nuance caught by Ricks refined ear is so clear when he talks about identifying which songs have a capo based on the chord shapes used. Your attention to detail is such an inspiration!
i feel like anyone who plays guitar would know that you can’t get that tone out of notes that high on the neck without a capo. Also you can hear that they’re playing open chords by the way the notes are ringing and again, you can’t do it that high without a capo. This isn’t to discredit Rick but I’m by no means a great guitarist or musician and i picked up on it.
As a guitarist I know what all the open chords in first position sound like. Capos used on the third fret (G) are notoriously done for the male voice, especially in Country. I'm sure the number of Country songs that use capos is quite high. It is almost second nature. Not so much in Metal. :)
I also can distinguish guitar chords with or without a capo, am I an inspiration?
