As someone who actually like BTS's music, the songs the members themselves wrote, the songs they sing in Korean, I agree with Matt here. This song and their other English songs make me want to jump off a window.
As someone who was their fan since their debut, I can’t agree more! I’ve totally lost my interest in them! They tried to stay relevant by ruining their own uniqueness! Matt, I almost always agree with you. I completely disagree with you about BTS. Very unfair to judge this group by this one song. I am 65 years old and find BTS beyond extremely talented, Extensive vocal range for singers in pitch, (RARITY) probably the best dancers in the music industry and a breath of fresh air for the youth of today. I am a former choir director for 32 years and have cringed with horrible, disturbing, non talented musicians who prey on the young kids to make a buck. This group has a moral compass, modesty, are respected all over the world and I am thrilled my grandchildren (and myself!) can't get enough of BTS singing DYNAMITE. Pull up the performance of BTS singing DYNAMITE for the James Corden show. I remember watching their performance on Corden's Show while our world was experiencing Global Hell with the Covid Pandemic in November, 2020. Since COVID wouldn't allow BTS to physically fly to the US, they got creative with DYNAMITE for Corden's show. Unbelievable. Absolutely spot on vocals and witness bombastic choreography. Also, listen to BLACK SWAN also live performance on James Corden. Sung in Korean and English. Unbelievable choreography and perfection. My daughter is a professional dancer and considers BTS to be the best dancers in the music industry since Michael Jackson. Also, for your homework, look up the live performance of BOY WITH LUV on SNL. This was their first American performance and it was ground-breaking and broke barriers as they sang most of the song in Korean to prove music is the universal language. Looking forward to another chance for this mega-super group: a future review of BTS by Matt Walsh!
But that’s the joke. This isn’t meant to be a well reserarched critique of their music, it’s literally Matt Walsh, the conservative dad, reacting at face value to this generation’s culture. It isn’t meant to be constructive, just look at how he “reviews” rap songs and talks about them in the cast.

Suga, the one snapping his fingers, actually had shoulder surgery last year to fix a shoulder injury he got 8 years ago and had been suffering from for that whole time. Majority of the infatuation of them is vain, yet people often try to justify by saying they are in support of thing like mental health and every other 'politically correct' thing under the sun, so i wouldn't quite call them harmless.
@@spongebob8445 They incorporate many elements to help convey their messages, especially books. The most famous one is Jung's Map of the Soul by Dr. Murray Stein, the process to individuation( persona, shadow, ego). Their album series map of the soul is inspired by that book and Armys read them to understand the messages and storyline. Bts have always said please read their lyrics, its the most important part of their music. These English tunes are for fun. "It's a very important topic because young people who find their personas inadequate, or feel like they're not fitting in, are very vulnerable to mobbing (bullying) or to suicidal acts - so I think BTS addressing that is very timely and important for their audience." - Dr. Stein Atleast he acknowledges their musical efforts.
Im feel kinda sad that western audience will only pay attention to their english tracks that arent really what the whole group is about. Yeah most people hear Kpop and these disco pop songs are all they think about. There are actually many amazing genres within the “Kpop” or bts grouping.
@@mypartyisprivate8693 Not really. I will only speak for BTS bcoz i only do know their music well from the kpop world. You yourself do know you are wrong. Judging a book by it's cover. Age old idiom & u all still don't understand it. U haven't checked out anything more than 1 song. They hve 250+ & only 3 in English. Their lyricism in Korean is very complex bcoz they write it themselves, but people weren't even willing to give it a listen bcoz they are too lazy to simply google translations. Also bcoz the US radio told them they don't play non-English songs, no matter the demand. Btw they sold out multiple stadium tours in US before any of their English songs. Most US artist themselves can't sell out arenas, leave stadiums. They had a huge fandom already in the US. And there's a reason why so many get invested so deeply & don't leave it like some sort of trend that u should get bored of. But they tried English songs to break into west even more through radio & US media. And it worked u know ? even giving them a Grammy nomination. I mean their leader literally said that maybe it was because the song didn't have any deep message & people probably don't always need a deep message. In short he quite literally said, we dumbed it down for the Americans & it worked. Their Korean music literally talks about topics like challenging the Korean education system, or youth unemployment or mental health issues, their personal struggles with family, music, their struggle within the industry in Korea given they came from a small independent label which was basically bankrupt . The MVs reference a lot of historic artwork s & some great books, Herman Hesse's Demian, Carl Jung's psychology- map of soul, sometimes greek mythology, idk alot of stuff. And they have a whole music video universe which is connected through several music videos of their songs, webtoons, reading notes. No artist is doing that I'm sorry. No one is this consistent, complex & detailed & diverse.
Their Korean albums are much better. Their album WINGS is based on Herman Hesse's book, DEMIAN; and their album Map of the Soul is based on Carl Jung's theories of the Ego and Shadow. There's much more depth to their Korean music. "Butter" wasn't written by the group; it was written by American/Canadian songwriters, which is why it sounds like a generic American boyband track. I highly recommend checking out RM's new release, "Wild Flower." It has more of the songwriting depth that attracts fans to the group.
And not everyone has to agree with Matt, it works both ways, he reacts, makes his opinion and we respond with our own opinion of his reaction. Im a fan and sub of DW team, but even I can disagree with them, just like Matt can dislike Bts.

To answer Matt Walshs' question, yes, they are referring to themselves unless directed otherwise. This is due to the fact that in the korean language, you don't really say the word "I", it is assumed. Similar to the italian language, you don't say "Io" too much, because its redundant. (Example: I'm going to the store = going to the store). So since english is not their first language, it would make sense if the translation is a bit weird.
Based- listen to some of their other stuff.. I recommend Spring day and Dope as a starter point. Good luck with your road to learning more about bts journey..
I got my mom on them too hehe😂 Unlike other boy bands they have great music that spans across many genres and themes that appeal to many different ages.
Matt you really need to do some research . You do not want to appear ignorant on a subject. It's not you. But you may have just done so. This song is not a true representation of what they write and do, and who they are. You are reviewing the wrong BTS song. This is a summer fan song. It's for fun. This is not their story. As dancers, they are extremely talented and work endless hours to achieve perfection and synchronization. This dance is for the fans to be able to join in. Most of there choreography is very difficult and requires extreme conditioning and body control. Something INSYNC could never perform at the height of their career. You just haven't seen it. They are also quite humble and poke fun at their good looks, which they do have lol. It's refreshing that these artists explore many genres of music and dance including contemporary dance, performing in bare feet as modern dancers do. The guy in the white is a rapper/producer who just came off of shoulder surgery for an injury that he has been performing with since before the beginning of their career more than 8 yrs ago. Guess covid was good for something for him. I've seen him perform with his hand in his pocket until he could get a cortisone shot before returning for the next set. They may look soft but they are anything but. The most feminine looking one, a professional modern dancer as well, could take you out with his Taekwondo and Kendo black belt skills. Also the feminine look is common there, very gender neutral clothes and colors. Flowers, bright colors and whimsicalness is cultural and not seen as feminine. It's also refreshing that their lyrics, (their own not the English stuff) are clean, positive, encouraging unlike the American pop WAP culture. Profanity is rarely used and only used for intensity of feeling in some of their more cutting subject songs, not used gratuitously. Also, they are sexy and keep their clothes on. Parents can take their kids to a concert and not hear 1 swear or profane remark or see overly rude gestures. Just fun, singing and dancing fun, with a positive message of loving self to love others, in a culture that is steeped in suicide and cut throat competition for perfection from pre-school. They are also very charitable. Although they try to remain anonymous with their giving, they are not always successful. So before you trash them, please research their culture, history and story. You couldn't be more wrong in your interpretation of who they are and what they've done. My daughter has been living in SK for 5 years and experiences this culture daily. I know of them because of her. They are creative with many giftings in the arts and their leader is a member of Mensa. They are young and need more life experience but they are no dummies, and have stayed clear of being indoctrinated by American pop culture so far. I pray that continues to be so.
That was nicely put! The choreography for butter and permission to dance was purposely easy so fans could learn it especially permission to dance which uses sign language in the choreography
Lol you are taking Matt and a boyband wayyy too seriously. Do research on what as in he and the vast majority of adults could care less about the inner workings of this group.
@@richie9878 so why review them just to bash them, if they are so meaningless? What was the point? I have a personal connection to SK. There is a negative culture of shame based on appearance, intelligence and monetary success far more detrimental than we'd ever see here. It leads to depression and mental health issues that are also considered shameful to address. They have the second highest suicide rate globally , 26% of 100,000. These boys are trying to uplift the youth. Spread a message of love and self acceptance. That it's ok not to step on your friends to be #1 in your class, it's ok to get help if you have depression, mental health issues or thoughts of suicide, that your life is worth something. No one before them, in their industry, has had the courage to say it. So until SK accepts Christ and learns that their identity is found in him and not what you do or how successful you are , these boys are speaking up for people who need help, in the best way they know how. So don't bash them just for no other reason than a laugh. They wouldn't bash you.
I don't think you can judge their music overall from one song. Butter is not their best song and I think it is probably one of the worst songs of theirs to react to when hearing them for the first time. It does not do them justice. You'll find that in their English songs like Butter, Permission to dance and Dynamite, the choreography was kept relatively simple because these songs are not supposed to have deep messages or complex choreography. They're just for fun. If you had reacted to a song like Blue and Grey, you would get deep lyrics about anxiety and depression. If you had reacted to Dionysus, you would get the complex and impressive choreography. As for the member in the white suit snapping his fingers, that's SUGA and he is not a dancer. His role in the band is a rapper. Dancing is not his strong suit and when he first joined the band, he was really hoping to avoid it. I think that to really understand them and what people love about them, you should react to different songs
Me too. When I first found them that was something I loved. None of their songs are extremely explicit or sexual. Even their language is pretty limited or not used in a crude way.

Their lyrics are fake, and that's something i could objectively prove with the way they go and display themselves. Eg. "when i became 18 I became slowly polluted and muh social anxiety", as well as similar lones referring to depression, like where they'd say stuff like "My parents don't know who I am, and neither do I", it's so poorly delivered lyrically as much as musically. Even the poetic stuff like with the painful goodbyes and good metaphors gets squandered easily by switching acts, emotions and gears, as if it wasn't something they felt or created themselves which, tbh, despite all the behind the scenes, they most likely did not create. Ignoring them as individuals, focusing on the music proves it more than any choreography can.

As a BTS fan I laughed when Matt questioned their dancing. I’m not offended but now we need him to react to them actually dancing because if there is one criticism of BTS that is off it’s that. They are actually pretty good dancers.
And on top of that he said, aren't boy bands supposed to dance well? I have never seen any other boyband, well atleast in this western world, dance as much but even as good as but as much as BTS....What is he even talking about really??
RIGHT like dont start on theyre dancing seriously if he wants to see them dance he needs to watch the mv of dope, black swan, intro:boy meets evil, and so many more

Bts helps me a lot especially last year my whole family got covid and our livelihood affected for months and no money to pay bills seeing them, hearing them and how they're sending messages to the people especially good vibes songs makes me smile and happy for a moment. I don't get why people hate them for sending a good vibes through songs and gonna insult their fandom. If you dont like them just be respectful not like some a**hole without manners.
@@2hyuniesungie1 i don't know, sounds weird calling a female "king" and a male "queen". Maybe it's because my native language is different, but words have a gender and i would feel offended if someone called me queen, since i'm a male. Also, Internet says that Queen is slang for "homosexual man".
As a kid, i've used to watch Woody Woodpecker playing "Hungarian Rhapsody No 2", "Heroic Polonaise" and singing "Il Barbiere Di Siviglia". Those are some of the greatest jewels of western music and its painful to see that we went from Beethoven, Liszt, Bach and all other classical musicians to BTS in such a small time period.
Pretty nonsensical comparison. Pop music was popular when you were a kid and bad music was still being made then too. You’re acting like there aren’t plenty of people out there who like a pop group like BTS and also appreciate classical music. Comparing all music to whether it stands up to some piece of celebrated classical music seems silly
@@aminesheridi995 Their popularity doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad, either. Not much of a point you’re making, and also not really relevant to what I was saying regarding OP’s statement about music in a prior era.
As South Korea is a conservative country, what I appreciate is the fact the music is fairly squeaky clean, lyrics are most often about love. The girl bands usually wear little makeup and clothes are not exploitative. The music is much more wholesome. I'd rather my kids listen to kpop over the garbage that passes for pop in the states.
This isn't the best BTS song to be honest but as a fan of past boybands like BSB & N'Sync, and now BTS, I assure you these boys are not your ordinary boyband...they're the whole package..First, they write, produce their own music..their lyrics are deep and spread positivity, tackles mental health, depression, self love, to name a few. Their music helped people from all over the world especially this pandemic. Their choreography is always on point..But judging them by listening to only one song is naah...well, i guess you really can't please everybody..but man, you're missing a whole lot to ignore these talented musicians.

listen. you can’t make a video about them, saying all these bad things, from just one mv. hearing everything just tells me you haven’t done any research about them. what they’re lyrics mean, why they are literally one of the most respected groups, and even the meaning behind every song and the group. saying no offense over n over doesn’t mean someone won’t get offended. obviously people have and i wouldn’t blame them. “bts can’t dance” “bts can’t sing” like are you kidding me? the butter mv scene where they dance alone? yeah that was literally freestyle. english isn’t even their first language and only ONE is fluent. if you wanna speak watch the other things they’ve made. the things that broke records. the things that showed the world who they are as a group. the things that made them start from the bottom, move then all the way to the top. ofc there’s gonna people here thinking, “army get offended so easily” or something similar, but we are defending our boys as much as can from jokes like this. they don’t deserve these things, as they are some of the most patient, well-mannered, hardworking people i’ve seen. no words can describe how amazing they are. what a joke.
You ppl honestly can't take a joke. And he does political and societal commentary! He doesn't have to spend the days I've spent on BTS to come to a conclusion that they're surface level, uncreative, uncharacteristic pop group that only have the talent of sounding appealing, something that is not even that big of a deal anymore thanks to technological advancements. It's not hard to sound sonically appealing, but it's hard to actually sound and be creative.
In general, most artists tend to stick to that one thing they do well and it becomes their trademark sound, u listen to 1 song and can pretty much guess the sound of their whole discography. And it’s often true. The problem of BTS is that they do a lot of genres - pop, rnb, hip hop, jazz, rap - and do them all very well. They’ll be sickeningly sweet and next spitting bars in grudgy rap battles, cyphers. Which is why they’re so divisive. The common assumption of an artist’s discography really doesn’t apply here. And thats the only reason why fans often jump up the roof when their whole artistry is dismissed based on 1 sound.

My 17 year old daughter is infatuated with them. They're cute, harmless, non threatening, and yeah, the music is insipid and sugary. With the VILE FILTH that's being pushed on kids today, they're a welcome relief. They're a port in the storm for young minds being bombarded with the wrong messages all day long. Give thanks for BTS.
Meh they're not the worst thing to listen to in today's time, but no that's about all i can say about them positively.
Stein

Im feel kinda sad that western audience will only pay attention to their english tracks that arent really what the whole group is about. But if you think this is all they got then your definitely wrong abou that. Kpop is not for everyone but if you judge a group by one song i could definitely say a lot of you are missing out on why they are big in the first place.Amazing Lyrics is a gold mine that can be seen all over there discography spanning in multiple genres that typical boy bands dont do. If you listen to their other songs with an open mind you will atleast have respect for what their music is to people and not call Army tasteless
It is tasteless. Not uniquely so. Commonly so.
Yeah most people hear Kpop and these disco pop songs are all they think about. There are actually many amazing genres within the “Kpop” or bts grouping.
I completely agree
@@DEE-305 you did great!👏
Their Korean albums are much better.
Why were people so offended by what Matt said? What is BTS, your god? Calm down. Not everyone has to agree with you.

This video made my day. I love it!
I love your explanation. I would have said the same thing
Nicely put!!

@@Tannieseven Just because they're "positive" and have such messages does not make them safe of critiscism. I have listened to most if not all of their music from 2016 to 2020. Just by the first words he say, he’s not gonna listened to more than this, so don’t care explain and butter is greats
You’re not a musician nor a dancer. Keep your opinion to yourself because you don’t make a constructive criticism. How dare you!
Matt, you need to discuss about BTS with John Cena and Jimmy Falon. ASAP.
Jimmy Fallon is absolutely terrible.
@@seangannon6081 yeah he's a horrible person.
Why wht happened?
The least person he needs to discuss BTS is Fallon. He needs to do some research, but I doubt he has the mind capabilities to do it right anyways so…..
Papa mochi is good too.. in car pool he even know many BTS song.. 🤭🤭🤭
I'm watching this as my sister is listening to BTS in the other room.
I have heard of BTS, never watched a video or listened to their music till now. Thank you, if ever I feel like a good laugh, I can put one of their videos on and listen, watch and get a good laugh!
Listen to there song, Spring Day. Butter was just a silly song they made for fun, no meaning to it really. But to get an actual experience with them you must look into them a litter better them, Butter. That song is ok, not my favorite.
Honestly, this song was just for fun. Their songs that are in Korean like 'Spring Day' are much deeper and well thought out.
And their older songs have more complex and impressive dancing
Yes spring day made me cry. It bought me so many memories and touched my heart. That song is a masterpiece
@Abraxas he really doesnt care for the numbers... You dont know Matt
My favourite is the truth untold 😭
🤣🤣😅😂 Oh you're serious 😳
Matt: you guys are deaf
Joke is on you man
"Bad taste of music" yet he knows 0 songs of the +400 of theirs
People without purpose will try to find meaning in any garbage. Thats all I will say about BTS.
I didnt know incorporating books, art, biblical references, psychology, etc...was garbage. Just stick to what you know, you have to atleast have some type of intellect to know Bts Korean music and not the English ones written by English speaking writers and artist.
I am a 31-year-old pharmacist and my fav artists are Bon Jovi, 30 Second to Mars, Linkin Park, Bruno Mars, Eminem and BTS etc just to point out a few. I respect your preference but should you want to form a legit impression of an artist/a group of artists, I do suggest you to check out more songs from them to see what else they can do. This is just 1 out of their 330+++ discography. ;) However, the choice is up to you to further explore their versatility.
I am not sure what is the genre that you listen to, but just a few recommendations here - ON Kinetic Manifesto , Black Swan, Spring Day, Mic Drop, House of Cards.
@Hey There and yet, we just listened to/watched Kpop.🇺🇲
Great suggestions! Hope he’s willing to give them a listen. If not, he’ll be the one missing out 🤷♀️
@Hey There Korean folk music could be a better recommendation then. A change of scenery maybe? Anyways I don’t really have much experience with it to give any recommendations as far as music or artists go in folk or country
Where we all these people telling Matt to form a "legitimate impression" of Lil Baby? Or NBA YoungBoy? Suddenly everyone lost their sense of humor when it was time for BTS to take their turn on the guillotine.
And their music is bad. My sister blasts their stuff all day every day. Yesterday I was making pasta and had to fight back to urge to just dunk my head in the boiling pot of water.
@@thewarden1398 chill dude, i did mention it is totally up to him to further explore it or not. It seems like you are losing your sense of humour when it comes to something you are not familiar with. I am not familiar with whoever artist that you mentioned in your comment. You keep on liking what you like and i will do the same.
listen. you can’t make a video about them, saying all these bad things, from just one mv. hearing everything just tells me you haven’t done any research about them. what they’re lyrics mean, why they are literally one of the most respected groups, and even the meaning behind every song and the group. saying no offense over n over doesn’t mean someone won’t get offended. obviously people have and i wouldn’t blame them.
Yeah, Matt Walsh is a joke! Trying hard to sound knowledgeable but he is not. Tell him to listen to children songs, naybe he will understand.
This song is really good just not his style. Its better than maximum hit soongs out there. He is clearly being biased.
Interesting dislike ratio, looks like some people can't stand others opinion.
So that's that song that plays on whatever advertisement UA-cam is always trying to play. I wasn't curious but I guess that's good to know.
“I don’t mean to offend anyone” *proceeds to say something offensive multiple times*
True
report this acc he dont deserve the 300k subs lmao
You humorless lot of fanatics.
He did that on purpose though. I guess you thought he is a Kpop Reaction video creator.
No offense by saying we are deaf 😂😂😂
@@d.s.19 I love bts and I totally agree. Their English songs are fun but I hate how American people just associate bts with these songs because that’s all they’re willing to listen to and those are the only songs American media will give attention to. They are definitely not their best work and clearly just produced to allow them access to the American music industry. Other songs that they actually participate in the lyric writing and production of are much much better.
@@katien3022 100% agree
@@d.s.19 no it was to cheer us up during the pandemic. It was a gift to fans and it was in English to better reach a larger audience and uplift more people.
I'm with Matt on this, playing deliberately stupid when it comes to the latest 'trends' is truly one of the delights of middle age.
Bts isnt a trend though, theyve been going on for nearly a decade...
Omg this is the best thing ever! Do more!!!!
