  • This video is all in good fun! And I will say, there are so many dog owners out there that are absolute saints when it comes to treating and caring for aggressive/super anxious animals. You guys are absolute rock stars. In my experience, I have come across far more dog owners that are dramatically against sedating pets for everyone’s safety before they come in compared to cat owners. And we can all agree that as a whole, cats have far better names ;-)

I used to think it was a good idea to avoid doctors, too. Didn't see one for 30 years. Maybe 40. (Had no health insurance. Thanks, America!) Slept off my first heart attack; no big deal, right? When I finally ended up breaking a leg and couldn't avoid surgery any more, I went through two orthopedic surgeries, one open heart, and a thoracic surgery to remove something cancerous, all within 6 months. Some of that would've gone undetected and possibly killed me if it hadn't been found opportunistically.
So maybe no news isn't always good news when it comes to your health.

Guess I’m an outlier. I bring my furry feline bastard to the vets even when he doesn’t have an appointment. I call ahead of time to make sure it isn’t too hectic. Then he gets treats and chin scritchies in the waiting area. It’s hugely reduced his stress when an actual appointment rolls around.

@@someone3187 Both. I’ve had my current feline overlord for about a year. My previous kitty passed during the pandemic at the age of 19. She was much more anxious at the vets than my current lad. With my late Misty, she’d had annual checkups then more frequent visits as she grew older and started having health problems. And as she needed more visits the more scared she became. (kidney disease, arthritis, and lastly seizures from a possible brain tumour) One of my biggest regrets is that my faithful feline friend died when she was scared because lockdown meant that the home euthanasia service I’d planned on couldn’t happen. She was shivering in fear and I had nightmares for months afterwards because it felt like I’d failed her.
I’m determined to do everything I can to never have one of my cats suffer the same. I take the responsibility of having a pet very seriously. Ensuring my little overlord gets proper routine medical care and lives in an environment that is safe and free of major stress (at least in the areas I can control) is hardly an unreasonable standard. Spending extra time desensitising my Bro’dee to travelling to and from the vets and spending time in that environment now while he’s young and mostly healthy (mystery GI issues) will hopefully make it easier for both cat and vet staff in future. I also brush his teeth, routinely handle his paws (like I would if I were trimming his claws), and use his brushing time (which he loves) to make sure he’s comfortable being touched from nose to tail.
And I consider myself fortunate that my vet practice are very happy to accommodate. Once, the practice was completely empty due to some cancellations and one of the vet nurses let us into an exam room and ended up playing with Bro’dee for around 15 minutes. If I can ensure he remains that relaxed and happy to socialise with the humans who occasionally use rectal thermometers and needles on him throughout his life then I think I’ll have accomplished something really positive for both my furry friend and the amazing humans who work at my vets.

I was going to a pet dentist with my youngest cat and before me there was this lady with a tiny dog. When the anesthesiologist took her data she was like "so his name is *very long and noble sounding name*, *very detailed breed and ancestry*, he's very good but please be careful". When it was my time I said "yeah, that's Nano, he literally appeared in my garden when he was 2 months old or so, looks like a cat so I guess he's one, I just finished domesticating him, so I'll just clench him really REALLY hard and hope he doesn't destroy the whole place, please close the door behind ourselves". All while all these poor doctors were looking at me like I was crazy and this tiny cat in my hands was behaving perfectly even when they shaved him and put a needle in his arm. He actually was absolutely feral when he dropped in my garden

Actual conversation I had with my vet, who I normally take my cat Caramel to:
Me: So, we've had a stray hanging around and putting up found cat signs and posts online hasn't worked, so I want to bring him in to be scanned for a microchip, and if he doesn't have one go ahead and get him an exam and his shots.
Vet Tech: Okay, and what's his name?
    Me: ... Sir Smokey Galahad.
    Vet Tech: ...
Me: There was some disagreement on what to name him so everyone compromised, just put down Smokey. Oh, and a warning, he's a little spicier than Caramel...
Vet Tech: Thank you for the warning.
Me: But then again, milk is spicier than Caramel...
For a bit more context, Caramel is very orange and the sweetest, gentlest cat we've ever had. He doesn't even get upset at the vet, he just crouches down and waits for it to be over. So, yes, milk is actually spicier than him.

Best advice… Always bang on the hood of your car before you started up… Often that banging noise will make any cats inside of it crawl out.

AND I wish more people saw anxiety medication as a GOOD thing for their dog. If you could help your dog be less anxious, why wouldn't you? I think it's cruel to not give them that support if they need it - speaking as a neurotic mess myself.

I had a cat who was fine with goling to the vet until he was neutered. Once that happened, it was hell getting him to the vet and hell for the vet and techs, no matter what. He had an injury to his tail some years later and while he stayed next to me at home until I could hire a professional cat wrangler to get him in his box the next morning, because of course, this happened at midnight. I slept with him and his bloody tail to calm him down. After the surgery, the vet techs could not get him in his box. Two of them. They had to drug him.
I told the vet it was because he knew they took away his nads.

Before that, despite seeing the carriers just sitting around, open, everyday, usually with feliaway and sometimes even treats in it, those two found like lions.
That poor TSA agent. He wouldn't even do a drug search of their carriers. He looked like he was flashing back to a past life wherein he was killed by The Ghost and The Darkness.

Fraidy cat (the one in the story) got his cone off in 30 min (same visit, tail amputation from degloving). I had to explain to him don't lick your tail. Oddly enough, he listened. With that cat, it was all about who he trusted, and that list was very very small. Everyone else, he hid from or growled at. *Pro cat tip:* Leave your carrier(s) out & open all the time, with a blanket or towel inside (very important), so that your cats can hang out in there whenever they want. (They will; mine always do)
That will make their carrier a safe space that smells like them, which will heavily reduce stress on any trip, including to the vet 💜
Cats are very territorial, & they often get really anxious in strange environments. But my cats are always chill & friendly during vet visits, because they get to take their little house with them & it makes them feel safer 💕

The original vet refused to prescribe PVPs, and then would charge me extra for the cat's cleanup. I left that vet, and the new place was happy to prescribe Gabapentin for my scared boy. Just last week he needed his shots, and so one dose of Gaba in the morning and one an hour and a half before appointment time that afternoon made him sleepy and not mind much what was going on. I have a 7yo boy kitty named Rowen who has usually been pretty good for the vet up until 2020 or 2021. At that appointment they took him into the back and the vet brought him back saying she couldn't do the examination because he tried to bite a vet tech. Funny thing was was we were there for ear mites because of a 5w kitten we'd found in the middle of the road and she lovingly gave all her new siblings ear mites (she has a whole ass story on why we couldn't give her treatments until she was much much older but that's a different story entirely. Summary is she was really really sick and severely underweight. She's fine now if not now overweight because she's a damn vacuum.). We actually got the samples for her with no issues so we assumed I had to be in the room for him to be calm because if it was just my roommate he'd act out. He's always been calm and patient with me (I've had him since he was a kitten). Fast forward to 2024 and the only things that have changed are our 13yo cat's passing and the adoption of a one-eyed gremlin who is best buds with Rowen. For some reason, when we went to the vet this year, the new vet ignored the note in his chart that I need to be in the room and took him back. He bit through the cat glove and was so keyed up he wouldn't even let me touch him. Tried gab and he was still so keyed up at the next visit that they once again couldn't do an examination but they did manage to get him in this weird netting panini press looking thing and my gods was his face the most unhappy and done I have ever seen him. They managed to get his vaccinations done though that at least. Sadly we've come to the compromise with the vet that to continue seeing him he now has to be sedated. I love this little shithead too much to get rid of him or anything. He's perfectly fine at home and is the sweetest love bug. Just something about the vet he hates. His sisters do really well there.

😂 My nephew named my dad's cat Ant. We call him Ant-man or Anthony. My niece had a Spider-Man but he passed away of old age. Then we ended up with a 5ish week old kitten that she fell in love with. His name is Peter Parker. We call him Pete Pete.

Our kitty lads get their yearly check-up! They also aren't aggressive. One of them actually sprawls on the exam table happy as a clam. The other. . .hides under the bench. They do fuss a 'little' when being handled, but more in the 'oh, please just let go' sort of way. They aren't difficult for their shots. The first more just because he doesn't like feeling confined, the other because he is skittish with strangers.

My cats are former ferals. Only the oldest gets to the vet since I got him at 10 weeks. The others were much too old to train (I still get bit after 9 years).

My 10yo boy cat hates being in the crate but is a perfect angel at the vet once he's out on the table. He's had claustrophobia since we adopted him as a kitten, but is used to being handled by vets since I got him used to the pokes and prodding that vets do from a young age. He lets them touch his paws, belly, ears, mouth, and tail.

Funnily our cat is called "Pissu" which means as much as "cat". It just happend since we couldn't decide on a name so it just stuck with us and in our home country it isn't that unusual to not name your cats. Other options were: Pushik (coward), Yogurt or tiger.

I laughed my ass off when the vet gave me Gabapentin for my little hell best. I've been taking it for years for nerve pain. Got bottles of the stuff.

My family might be an outlier on cat names, they’re all fairly normal. We’ve had Chloe, Alice, Simon, Isaac, and Drake. My parents named all of them. I’m not sure on the inspiration for Chloe or Simon (and Chloe was older than me until she disappeared in the woods when I was 11) but Alice was named for one of my dad’s favorite bands (Alice in Chains), Isaac for Sir Isaac Newton, and Drake for Sir Francis Drake. Then during COVID my mom decided to get a dog and his name is Tycho, after the astronomer Tycho Brahe.

My cat is named Baby Girl Kitty. My daughter named her. Her kittens are named Siggy (my daughter named him), Lady Jet (my son named her), and Bellatrix (I named her). People look at me weird when they hear Siggy and Lady Jet, but they tend to really like Bellatrix.

Took an appointment simply to list my cats in their system. One of them tends to vomit often, so I asked for recommendations.
The look of the vet when she realised my cats were not only in good health, but were obviously pampered told me of what she's used to get. 😬

As a cat owner, I feel called out lol!
I currently have two cats. My 10 month old short haired Tabby (Loki Muriel Smoky Bear)had all his kitten appointments (vaccinations, castration) and is just about due his annual checkup and will have his annual vaccination top ups) however my 11 year old Ginger Ringtail (Castiel What’s-his-name Albatross the third) had his kitten vaccinations and was castrated but he hasn’t been to a vet science. He is super healthy, just after he turned one my marriage ended and I was is a difficult financial situation figuring out life as a single Mum. I am now financially stable (hence new cat) and he is registered with my vet but has never been because he is huge, very salty, has gone from being my baby to hating my guts (long story involving covid lockdown etc) he will barely let me touch him, I could never get him in a carrier (I’m in a wheelchair). One of my kids could probably put him in a carrier (wearing gardening gloves a thick coat!) if he really need to go to the vet with illness or injury but right now we are in the place of leaving him be without a good reason to cause danger and trauma (for him and us!).
From September it will just be me and my sixteen year old daughter as the oldest, the cat’s favourite is off to university. We will have to figure it out as he is now getting on in years.
Gosh, why am I incapable of leaving a short comment! Apologies!

relate to the Gabapentin... my one cat is so relaxed until even the concept of a carrier or leaving the apartment comes around and then I have to flip my mattress and pull him off the bottom of it one claw at a time... Gabapentin ftw!

Vet Receptionist: oh, who is this?
    Me: Cat.
    VR: yes, that’s a cat.
Me: yes. Cat. Doesn’t respond to anything except he sounds of kittens, so I can either name this cat *tiny meowing sound* or just accept call this adorable idiot cat whenever someone asks.
VR: And what seems to be cat’s problem?
    Me: barfs food at random.
    VR: all the time?
Me: Do you see her bar….ok, so currently yes, she is barfing, but in general it’s random and we’ve tried every food known to human beings and turkey based food seems to be the less projectile.
VR: that’s not made by a lot of manufacturers.
me: Tell me about it. Oh and she doesn’t like the look of you, so that’s why she just barfed.

I keep a Churu bar in my pet carrier just in case the vets need a little help with my little kitty girl. She's very food motivated. When I got her from my mom she was obese but now I got her down to just slightly heavy.

I love my fur baby, but I have no illusions about who she is. My 95lb GSD (stands 6’5” on her hind legs), god bless her, gets a little mouthy when someone tries to make her so something she doesn’t want, so we’ve always asked for a muzzle. She’s never bitten anyone and we want to keep that record. Honestly, she sees the muzzle and is so accustomed to it that she holds her face to me so that I can put it on. She’s a very good girl and we take the muzzle off as soon as the exam/shots/blood draws are over so that she can get pets and give kisses. The vet and techs can hand-feed her treats and she is very gentle…she’s just not a fan of having her temperature or her blood taken

I never had a primary care vet for my cat, but in my defense it's really hard scheduling the same vet every time on a teacher schedule with a senior cat. We did have a primary clinic with a good track record for vets.

I’m Moussaka. Moo for short. My mother who is now my grandmother adopted me from a ranch in Texas. I think I’m part Siamese… Smart and sneaky. too much for my first mom to handle… went to live with my brother Pacha. Now my old mom is my new grandmother and I’m sneaky there too… no likey vets, but I stay chill until I get home then it’s payback time.

I take my cat normally multiple times a year to the vet. She had a primary care vet and a behavioral specialist. She has quite a few mental and physical medical problems and needs at minimum one yearly visit to get her prescription refilled, but I take her in if I think anything is wrong aside from her Normal problems

My guy is actually a really chill cat. Sure, he will try to disappear when the vet reaches for him, but he never scratches, bites, or growls at anyone. I’ve heard him hiss once- and to be fair, another (fatter) cat was literally sitting on him at the time and put a paw to his kidneys.
But, I should take him to the vets more often… no excuses, I know. I’ve just been too hesitant since my dog had to be put down a while back.
Idk, sometimes vet trips just suck
