Great guide. Where I’m struggling is the leveling up and deciding how to progress each character. I was prepared to roll play MYSELF but didn’t think I’d be building my whole team with such intense detail. It’s intimidating.

This is excellent thanks! I'm m in my '60's now and only just getting into d&d. Played Gloomhaven for a year or so till covid, but no video games. Anyhoo, my son let me know about baldurs gate but I need really dumbed down basics. Anything you can do to pick apart down to absolute basics will help this old novice. 😊
None of these tips note how useful SHOVE is. Need to get away without wasting an action on disengage or taking and opportunity attack? Shove the enemy. Park a tank at the top of a ladder and shove enemies off as they climb up for massive damage. Need to pick a fight with a faction whose leader is conveniently standing next to a death pit or lava? Guess whose dying before the fight even starts. Shove. Very strong.
Totally new to this kind of game. I'm almost embarrassed to tell how long it took me to realize that I could reunite my party. I thought it was a glitch when my companions stopped following me. Another thing was when the game went into turn-based mode while I was walking through a trapped isle. I realized after over an hour that I could just turn turn-based mode off.
@Miag_vip go to the party menu and look at the button configuration under your character list. It'll tell you which buttons to press while the menu is open so you can unite your units and disband your party
I HATE top down, turn based games, but Baldurs gate 3 has become one of my favourite games of all times, that’s how good this game is. Seriously, if you’re not sure, please give this game a chance, but please, please, please role play when playing, because that’s where this game really shines. This game rewards players who use imagination and creativity, and play to their characters strengths. Most of my favourite moments from playing this game haven’t even come from combat at all, but rather trying things that I wasn’t even sure was possible. Experiment, throw yourself at the experience, have fun!
I agree! It doesn't matter what people paid to stream hype about it, when one gets into the game one finds plenty for the own playing style & favorite char romance thingie. 🤗 Gnome R.A.T. (Rogue, Arcane Trickster).
I love this comment, 'cause I normally avoid turn-based games, but everything I've seen about BG3 so far is drawing me fiercely to dive into it, and I certainly will. Thanks!
I feel like I need to take a class to figure out how to play this game. I just started playing on PS5 and I have no idea what I'm doing. I don't think this cleared it up either.
@@artofstu42any tips or resources you can give me 😭 I have 0 experience with dnd or rpg games but I impulse-bought bd3 cuz I just wanna play it so bad but I'm literally stuck in the prologue trying to get off the ship thing because I'm genuinely so confused how to use the combat properly 😭 I'm scared that I just wasted 70 bucks on a non-refundable game I'll never be able to play 💀
I got four hours in and realized I was not having ANY fun due to overwhelm. Steam wouldn’t give me a refund so I kept trying, set it to easy mode and I will say it’s getting a bit better. I still find the combat and movement quite tedious, but at least I have some idea of how to strategize. I am still sort of regretting buying it tbh because I’m such a casual gamer. Wish the steam refund window would extend for such a long and complex game.
Yeah, I wanted to get it, but I think it's going to be a hard pass for me. I am decent at games, but this just looks to be too much. Not really interested in another game, I have a few, that I am just going to rage quit, Uninstaller, and never touch again.
I’ve played for like 10 hours so far and have no idea what I’m doing. I’m playing on the easiest level and I’m still dying constantly. It’s ruining the game because I can’t DO anything Edit because people lack critical thinking skills: I play on ps5. Nowhere was there anything that said "do this to access a menu that explains eveything". Maybe my game was buggy, maybe not, but either way it took me until my third playthrough until the tips and tricks started actually prompting me. Sorry that my personal struggle ruined your lives I guess
Well I’m 10 hour into the hardest difficulty and still have no idea what’s going on and dying left and right lol. Best friends will be manual save DO NOT TRUST AUTO SAVE
@@CollectiveDivineConsciousness after 280 hours I’ve finally finished the game. It got easier after a while. I will NOT be playing on Tactician mode. Good luck buddy
Bard is one of the better beginner classes for one simple reason; Jack of All Trades. Excels at charisma checks, yet it is capable of also being proficient at a number of other checks in all other categories.
Yeah I was getting crushed as a paladin which I got to the mausoleum on act 2 and got frustrated so I started again as a bard. With like a slight better understanding of knowing what I’m doing and the op powers of the bard it is night and day easier on act 1 so far. I’m actually terrified thought that even if I level up as much as possible and do everything, I still might get pooped on in act 2. The game can still be harder than dark souls on explorer. I still love it though and I will do everything in my power to hopefully complete it at least once. Best of luck to anyone else struggling
I'm on my 3rd playthough, and I can remember how embarassed I was and how I was struggling at the beginning. Do not give up people, this game is something else!
Proficiencies for sure are important to explain, because the number of times I've seen a cool piece of gear, slapped it on Wyll and found he could no longer cast spells is too dang high. I think it's also a good idea to explain surfaces, as they're a huge part of Larian games, if not 5e D&D as much, so showing some of the consequences of standing in different terrain, getting high ground, etc Great video, always love to see your content!
Yeah, I accidentally ran through some glowing vine-like plant and became ensnared. When I got out I was left bleeding from my legs (leaving bloody footprints everywhere I walked) and had to have Shadowheart waste her healing spell on me. /fail
My first D&D game and I absolutely love it. It took me a few hours to get used to the combat system but now I know how to set up my characters for a better chance to win. I'm about 23 hours in and the story is awesome as well as the quests. This is definitely gonna be on my all time favorite games list.
@@iclyaaaa-jc3bb it's definitely worth it. It takes a while to understand the combat system. I would suggest watching several beginner videos in order to see if it's really for you.
More combat videos, people do not want to miss the best game, ever made, but they will if they give up & don’t learn the deep combat, don’t feel bad & take your time learning the systems of the game, your not alone.
Yeah, I was wanting to get this this game, but I've been scouring videos and comments about this game, and, frankly, I think it's all just a bit much. I 'm sure the game is great. I haven't heard many people say it wasn't... However, I think it's going to be a hard pass for me.
@@williammoyle1655 it's really not that hard if you just take a little time to learn, I only play games like sims and animal crossing so something like this is way out of my comfort zone but I am still having a blast and have most of it down now.
@@sneaky5141 Not at all. Baldurs gate is overly complicated, and a thing for people that want a very deep roleplay gameplay with hundreds of stats and variety. If you can play pokemon, or any normal game, you cannot play baldurs gate without studying it for a while.
As a from soft noob your Elden ring video helped me so much and I love the hell out of that game now, so I’m confident this video will help with BG3 too!
This is super helpful, and one of the best quick breakdowns I've seen of both D&D and BG3. I'm new to both, and about to start BG3. THANK YOU for all the great videos on this intriguing but complex game.
i’m not too familiar with their most recent edition of dungeons and dragons, but I grew up, playing the pen and paper versions during second edition. I feel like even so it wasn’t too hard for me to get back into playing this type of game. I just watched what the enemies were able to do and got an idea how to play better
Some hot goss here - I somehow was able to romance Lae'zel. I mean - I was NOT prepared for that. Apparently I was able to be ruthless enough to grab her attention. This game keeps surprising me with each turn. Thanks for a great explanation for us beginners (I've never played D&D but have watched some Critical Role recently so my experience is limited).
These things were all very well explained for beginners, thank you. Also this may sound odd but so many people narrating things do a terrible job at making you want to keep listening to them talk. You do very well at not talking in a monotonous tone and adding personality to the dialogue. Keep it up! 👍🏻
Please do include some lore for the Baldurs Gate 3 settings, it's world, races and their conflicts with each other. Would love to get invested in this world if we know a little about it.
This was very helpful. Not only have I never played dnd, I’ve never played a video game ever. Bg3 is the first game I’ve ever played at the ripe age of 20. I have a LOT of figuring out to do.
True story (But a bit long! Sorry!) I count myself as a gamer. I truly do. But my first taste of the MMORPG Elder Scrolls Online playing with a guild of people made me question whether I was allowed to have that title or if I actually was a fraud. I felt anxious that I wasn't following their game-savvy lingo or the game mechanics and I got cross with myself for being slow to be able to manage a build for the first time. I'd come from games where it was story based and beautiful and that was the experience. Anyway, after playing with the guild I'd selected who were friendly, if a bit more hardcore than me - I tried becoming one of them by learning the mechanics and grinding extremely hard for so long to get the 'right' armour/weapons/various different fragments of things that have to be put into another thing that had to be combined with the OTHER other thing etc etc. And you know once I did it and had it down, I was told that the satisfaction with the build I'd created would be a substantial gaming high - I learned instead that I was making myself sad. I took a look at what I was doing and I asked if I was having fun playing the game and the answer - shockingly - was nope! natta! I'm reminded of Viva La Dirt vid - ua-cam.com/video/QJW_8EcNzUY/v-deo.html I retreated from ESO to delve back into Okami, Skyrim, Zelda, Telltale and story based games or indie games that appealed to me and I had a blast! My point is that coming here and hearing you say that it's ok to be a little perplexed is such a huge weight off my anxiety. I've been bullied a fair bit (especially on ESO grouping with a random) and people use the phrase noob which just makes me want to quit playing with others altogether. (What a terrible term to exclude people! Surely encouraging gamers into playing and trying harder helps the entire franchise and it's fans!) Why did it take me so long to realise I wasn't a dumb, idiotic, clueless noob - I was someone who had achieved the heights of that type of gaming and said: "No thank you. I'm gonna do my own thing!" 😂 Anyway, that's all. Thank you for this guide ❤❤❤
I'm glad you wrote a long story! Pretty much the same here. Totally clueless about DnD and the combat has totally overwhelmed me. It's good to hear that I'm not the only one! Thanks!
I'm an absolute noob to any dnd but this is such a good game till this video I have just been winging it but now I have a good amount more knowledge thank you 😊
I’m still having a hard time just navigating the screens. Some of the stuff shown in this video (character screens) I have never seen before. Some of the stuff Aoife described was, “Do this to x,” and I was like, “How?!?”
I’m glad I reas the comments first thank you. This is why I im afraid of searching for advise. I just got the game and want no spoilers but is my fist game that’s like this.
Are any of you here old enough to remember the good ole days of gaming when games had instructions and manuals? Imagine being put into a cockpit of large commercial jet without having any type of aviation knowledge. Now also imagine being told to fly it without any training about what any of the countless switches and buttons do. And no assistance will be provided by air traffic control and no navigational systems will be available either. That's how I feel trying to play BG3.
I suck so bad at this game. I think I do a good job exploring, and still like miss everything. I missed Gale, I missed that corpse guy, I miss so much. I'm playing on explorer and still get my ass kicked every time I enter battle. It's so frustrating that it almost makes me want to stop playing, but I still do.
Thank you for this. I’ve been waiting for this game for so long, and i knew it would be a tough endeavor since I’ve never played DnD , but fuuuuuuuck, did i underestimate the complexity of Theo great game. I’ve watched many beginners guide and they still left me wanting to shit in my hands and clap…. Until THIS guide, an actual beginners guide. Thank you for it. I’m looking forward to future videos that you can give us regarding learning this badass experience.
Thank you very much for this guide! Things are a bit clearer... just a tad... I will have to re-watch it a quite a few times though. Thank you for giving me my 1st stepping stone of understanding. I can build it from there! ❣
A very useful video, Aoife! Not just for BG3 which I'm SO excited for on PS5. But also for D&D in general, which I'm having my first ever game of on the 30th September. 😄🎲
Every other Beginner Tips Video- So to start the game choose New game. When you want to rest, go to you’re camp. Find your companions. This video - actually useful information You should keep doing this. Giving out actual useful info. Thank You.

so i just discovered something amazing and im not sure why I haven't seen anyone else has try this... If you are out of spell slots and have no camp supplies just spend 100 gold to respec with withers and boom you get all your slots back.
I am intimidated to play this bc i feel like i have to watch 20 guides. The real question is: the game worth it if you have to constantly do side research to keep going? Who found it enjoyable while having to stop and learn?
Thanks for the video! I’ve played a little bit of D&D and listened to campaigns before, but this was still useful as I still don’t have a lot of experience
Struggling to stick to a play-through myself I've played D&D 5e so the mechanics and gameplay i understand, really enjoy the small tweaks they've added But just feels like im doing something wrong, like race, class, ability scores, etc And then that nagging "gamer pride" if i dont play a certain difficulty, or a certain way
Thank you. Very useful for me a newbie to BG3 I wish we had the same bars on the Xbox as they do on pc. It looks a lot more helpful and easily explainable
i really tried the trial and error thing, spending hours getting frustrated having to redo important parts and trying to understand combat mechanics. i’ve never played any game adjacent to D&D so i have no basis for comparison. i understand that the game is really catered to grind gamers who mostly have experience, but i’m bare bones. i love gaming, but i’ve never played anything quite like this. i’m on 8 months of playing it and i still hardly understand. definitely more than when i first started, so at least i’m not a lost cause.
How to entice people to play Baldur's Gate 3 and/or watch content about Baldur's Gate 3: Step 1: Put Astarion at the front of whatever material you're putting out there. Step 2:??? Step 3: Profit 😂
Of what I've seen of him so far, I kinda hate him... So that wouldn't work for me. I plan on getting BG3 whenever it comes to Xbox, but I'm finding it hard to warm to, and I've been playing RPGs of various kinds for decades. D&D's universe just leaves me completely cold. I'm hoping the writing and character narratives will be my 'in' to BG3.
@@MegaShepardsPie I don't understand why some people seem to be so very eager to express their dislike of Astarion. Seen the same on reddit. Posts that talks positively about Astarion always has a few buzzkills who took their time to write down comments saying that they don't like him. I don't see it happening with other characters. What is it about him that makes you people so sensitive? 😂
This is a terrific video, but it also completely talked me out of checking this game out. I thought the game was a lot like Dragon Age Origins, not D&D. I literally don’t understand the allure of D&D and have no desire to find out. Nothing against that shit if it’s your bag-I just prefer a more visceral RPG.
I've played BG 1 and 2 and NW games in the 90's I think it was? I've even downloaded mods carrying them on 3½ floppy disks like Drizzt Do'Urden. I remember those games where I was able to play without pause or just pause at the start of the combat and just position everybody accordingly and then watch the combat unfold. Of course you could pause whenever you wanted and dictate things like casting healing or spells if the combat needed it. I know things evolve (NW evolved from BG but you could still play it like BG) but BG3 feels like having to learn to play a totally different game having to roll dices for just about everything. Of course the game can be 60hs long when you spend half the game having to study science or something just to figure out how to pass checks. I wish there was an 'old way' of playing the game like in BG1 or 2.
Thank you soooo much for making this video ❤ It's exactly what I needed. I'm loving the game so far, but the amount of mechanics and choices is completely overwhelming to me.
This is definitely a game that I could only play with someone who knows what they’re doing and could guide me. Any BG players living near Eastbourne, England? Lol
This straight up sounds crazy but fun . I've played WOW . So I understand binding & spells . Kinda what i'm going in with . A good thing my daughter plays . She can help me . 😂 Downloading the game meow .
Good rundown on some of the nuances of the mechanics, Aoife! Romanced Gale since EA because who can resist Tim Downie's wry sass? So I must admit I cannot empthatise with people who got bugged with the wizard coming on a little too strong to them. Could you talk about some story/character details you found appealing yourself? I for one am intrigued what you made of this campaign.
I went into this game without knowledge prior thinking the play style would be like Skyrim and was put off at the fact that I couldn't just freely attack as I prefer being in full control of my character and am not a fan of turn based games lol.
Great video, thanks. Would love to see a video on how to increase chance to hit. and maybe some examples of battles and what people do. Theres so many things to do in battle that I just would never think of ( and outside of battle, like throwing a party member across a chasm)
I find the long rest mechanic to be very annoying. I think it’s great to get me to go to the camp and talk to companions and … but come on, I don’t want to do that after every fight
Controller related gameplay stuff would always be nice. I'm playing on PC and not all the stuff is very intuitive XD Like for example - I had to search online to figure out that items are stored under the Character Sheets menu 😂 That was the last place I thought of looking as I thought it would just be a stats menu of the characters and not their inventory as well (i was trying to figure out how / where I can drop items from my inventory)
is this game strictly single player and you control a party, or is there some sort of online cooperative mode I can play that allows me to interact with a friend?
additionally, was all this complexity built into the game from day 1? seems like an immense learning curve if i opt to try this - what's the 'real' longevity rate for brand new players?
@@baldASLsigner There's co-op where each other person plays a different character in the party, but I believe you have to begin the playthrough as co-op if you want to do that. Also, the learning curve isn't that bad. Just piss about and see what works or doesn't; you'll pick it up pretty fast (especially if you've ever played turn based RPGs or turn based squad strategy games before). What takes time is learning all the spells & abilities and how they might synergise with one another, but you don't need to know any of that to begin with & the tooltips on everything (along with further explanations if you press T & click a highlighted term) are quite good at explaining what's what.
Online co op up to 4 players. They aren't restricted to each other. Players are free to go wherever as long as it's in the same act. Ex. 1 person at camp, 1 at town, 1 fighting somewhere, and etc. Other players can hop in anytime up to 4. Let's say u started a 2-player session and later someone can hop in with a created character. The whole story can be completed co op or solo. Co op session can be continued to be play regardless if other players are on. Those created characters will become party members controlled by other players.
Been having a heck of a time with Bg3 getting my butt kicked … so I figured I would see what I am missing…. About 70% of the way through this video I said to myself “yeah, this is for dummies, I’ve already got all this” Wish I would have found you a month ago….

However.. I am enjoying it fully very much.
Ive been a gamer basically since birth, I have 21 year of experience and I must say, this game makes very little sense in the gaming world. To do the simplest tasks is brain surgery.
I actually have no idea what I am doing, but I love the game :D it has been a really long time since a was taking things so slow in game as I am now in BG3, it is just sooo great....and I guess when I learn how to play it will actually be even greater :D
I found out that if a wizard has an armor on that they are not proficient with, they cannot cast spells. This was during a battle. I wish this info was provided by the game..
This was a great video. I got the PS5 version and have tried a couple of different characters and I feel like I am still unsure what to play. I have not gotten very far into the game at all but I think I rested and it ended up removing a quest from my journal. Any tips on how to recognize which quests that could happen to? Thanks.
The game won't tell you in most cases, so you have to look them up. Sometimes the description will mention a number of days left, & each long rest will tick the world over to the following day. Short rests, exploration, & combat don't move time at all.

(Rogue, Arcane Trickster).
you sound like every first time D&D player, in a good way ofc 🤣
I love this comment, 'cause I normally avoid turn-based games, but everything I've seen about BG3 so far is drawing me fiercely to dive into it, and I certainly will. Thanks!
I hate turn based games, when I play Baldurs gate 3, I can't wait to get to the next combat encounter and figure out how to solve it.
Someone who understands these types of games 😊
I feel like I need to take a class to figure out how to play this game. I just started playing on PS5 and I have no idea what I'm doing. I don't think this cleared it up either.
Yeah, i'm about to return it lol
Did you end up figuring it out? Hesitating on buying
@@amya_25 Yeah, for the most part. I mean I don't get how every little thing works, but it's a great game. Have enjoyed it immensely.
@@EatTheRich848 $48 right now on Steam
I got four hours in and realized I was not having ANY fun due to overwhelm. Steam wouldn’t give me a refund so I kept trying, set it to easy mode and I will say it’s getting a bit better. I still find the combat and movement quite tedious, but at least I have some idea of how to strategize. I am still sort of regretting buying it tbh because I’m such a casual gamer. Wish the steam refund window would extend for such a long and complex game.
Play controller if you don't already, you can play the game like a third person rpg that way that's how I play over mouse and keyboard
Yeah, I wanted to get it, but I think it's going to be a hard pass for me. I am decent at games, but this just looks to be too much. Not really interested in another game, I have a few, that I am just going to rage quit, Uninstaller, and never touch again.
Still wondering how this won Game of the year ??
changing gear during combat is also an action. e.g. equipping a pair of gloves, weapon or head gear for a skill or perk you want to use in the battle.
I learned this the hard way when switching between torches and weapons

I’ve played for like 10 hours so far and have no idea what I’m doing. I’m playing on the easiest level and I’m still dying constantly. It’s ruining the game because I can’t DO anything
Edit because people lack critical thinking skills: I play on ps5. Nowhere was there anything that said "do this to access a menu that explains eveything". Maybe my game was buggy, maybe not, but either way it took me until my third playthrough until the tips and tricks started actually prompting me. Sorry that my personal struggle ruined your lives I guess

Bard is one of the better beginner classes for one simple reason; Jack of All Trades. Excels at charisma checks, yet it is capable of also being proficient at a number of other checks in all other categories.
I fuckin love my bard, lying, persuading, singing, dual wielding hahaha, love it
One of my favorite classes
I've started my first playthrough as a human bard, it looks pretty cool so far, also I have no prior D&D experience.
I literally want to cry this game is so complicated for me. I can't get out of the first zone without dying
I have played many video games and the combat in this one is beyond my comprehension
I DMed D&D e5 for over last 2 years (2 weekly meeting for 6-8 hours per month). Spent over 50 hours i BG3 game. Amazing tutorial from you Aoife!
Thats so cool, what made yu get in to D&D? and how did you find people to play with?
Proficiencies for sure are important to explain, because the number of times I've seen a cool piece of gear, slapped it on Wyll and found he could no longer cast spells is too dang high.
I think it's also a good idea to explain surfaces, as they're a huge part of Larian games, if not 5e D&D as much, so showing some of the consequences of standing in different terrain, getting high ground, etc
Great video, always love to see your content!
Currently waiting like a crack head at the spot for this fucking timer on my ps5 to finally hit 00:00
How do you set a timer on pS5?

Watched this even though I don't need it.
And I have to say, this is an EXCELLENT guide for newbies. Good work.
A very good primer for BG3 and D&D in general! Really appreciate it Aoife!
Would love to get invested in this world if we know a little about it.
try listening or reading 🤓

I took a look at what I was doing and I asked if I was having fun playing the game and the answer - shockingly - was nope! natta!
I'm reminded of Viva La Dirt vid - ua-cam.com/video/QJW_8EcNzUY/v-deo.html
I retreated from ESO to delve back into Okami, Skyrim, Zelda, Telltale and story based games or indie games that appealed to me and I had a blast!
I'm gonna do my own thing!" 😂
Anyway, that's all. Thank you for this guide ❤❤❤

I’ve played a little bit of D&D and listened to campaigns before, but this was still useful as I still don’t have a lot of experience

Very useful for me a newbie to BG3
I wish we had the same bars on the Xbox as they do on pc.
I am still so very lost on how to play the game, but I guess I will learn as I go along
How to entice people to play Baldur's Gate 3 and/or watch content about Baldur's Gate 3:
Step 1: Put Astarion at the front of whatever material you're putting out there.
Not sure how plastering the worst character of the game at the front would entice anyone into trying it out.

I would have subscribed if there were no spoilers
This is definitely a game that I could only play with someone who knows what they’re doing and could guide me.

You shouldn't need to long rest after every fight. Short rests can also help
Controller related gameplay stuff would always be nice. I'm playing on PC and not all the stuff is very intuitive XD
Like for example - I had to search online to figure out that items are stored under the Character Sheets menu 😂
That was the last place I thought of looking as I thought it would just be a stats menu of the characters and not their inventory as well (i was trying to figure out how / where I can drop items from my inventory)
is this game strictly single player and you control a party, or is there some sort of online cooperative mode I can play that allows me to interact with a friend?
additionally, was all this complexity built into the game from day 1? seems like an immense learning curve if i opt to try this - what's the 'real' longevity rate for brand new players?
you can play with friends yes up to 3 others in coop. @@baldASLsigner
