That thing sounds fantastic and the Grump's paint scheme looks absolutely killer on it.
Nice crackle to the exhaust!
Awesome car. Love the Jenkins tribute!
Absolutely beautiful. Love the crackle
This car makes no apologies and takes no prisoners on the strip. Hats off to the GM team.
Awesome, sounds like a Beast!
That must have been one hell of a ride, i've only seen and heard one ZL1 Camaro in person but never ridden in one. Seen a few L88 vettes for track use only also. Those engines sound amazing and you feel it through your whole body when your standing there next to it while they're running.
i could listen to that car all day!
CONGRATS ! TIP YOUR HAT ! DAVE WON TODAY AT US NATS ! ! ! ALL COPO FINAL CC/SA FINAL.
Nice Brian, good luck at Indy love that GM rumble
Very nice Victor, Brian. Im sure the Grump is crackin a smile from above.
Sounds like the cam is huge and the lobe separation is wide, Nice! What did it run?
That is funny mac. The 427 COPO spanked the 428 SCJ all over Indy this weekend.
Wow that's impressive.
Where are the specs? Horse power, Torque and the quarter time?
awesome !
is that cam in it from gmpp? theres no way thats a production ls7 bumpstick? love the car, just curious.
I was 11 years old in 1969 - i was very lucky to have been in all those cars when they were new - my brother was 18 - and i almost flunked 4th grade because he had me out at 2am flagging cars and i couldnt stay awake in school. I did get to ride in ZL1 copo camaro against a 69 hemi cuda - scariest ride i ever had back then - when the ZL1 hit second gear, i realized (at 11) where my nuts were - by 3rd gear i thought i was going to the moon - beat the hemi by 3 cars - it was at front st in Phila
Awesome!
Brian,
Great video, interesting that the engine stall wasn't ediited but that could happen to anyone. The run backs up the tune, going to check your website.
Who designed the engine? The answer is it's a load of GM engineers. They were Koerner, Ron Sperry (Cylinder heads), Bill Compton, Brian Kaminski (Engine Block), Jon Lewis, Stan Turek, Don Weiderhold, and half-timer Dave Wandel.
All had been with GM for many years prior to the design.
That's funny mac. We beat all the Fords in our class easily. Class win at Indy CC/SA
how do you get that much traction off the line??????
The car is legal CC/S.A. weight and maybe a little over. It is a N.A. 427 from GM and other than some EFI tuning and suspension tuning it is stock from GM. It is very impressive and works great. The Cagnassi Team are all great guys and wish us luck in Indy this weekend.
What was the time?
Cam?
What was the time and speed?
hay brian this is copper I have the 79 Malibu with blowen 383 we tuned on your dyno in Olympia . what time did that copo. run ??
how much power does the 427 make?
haha i got to see this car in person and meet Dave at the PRI show friggin sweet stuff they had there, from every supplier i wish they didn't move the location next year though =/.
Leave me hangin? What was the ET?
I am a Mustang fan, but I am glad that Chevy decided to go up against the CobraJet.
It only drives Ford to work harder to make the CobraJet faster, and in turn, that drives Chevy to make the COPO faster.
The result is power tech that is discovered and eventually employed in the regular Mustang GTs and Camaro SS's.
I personally see it were both Chevy and Ford customers come out ahead, whether youre a racing fan or just a regular daily driver name brand fan.
nice tribute, good luck at indy
wow thats amazing. and here i was thinking that porsche was the only one who can make high outputs N/A with their 4 liter 6 cylinder in the gt3 that made 500hp. how much would one of these engines go for?
Lee Allen, I think I saw that same auction, it was a 1930 v16 Cadi
What is different about a conventional motor like the LS engine that every auto maker from Chrysler to Ford including other divisions of GM like Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Cadillac all over look which allows the LS to make power.
Awesome!!!#
After the war 5 Ford engineers were working on variations of OHV V-8's. One of those Ford engineers was at a party in Detroit and he was approached by the president and vice president of GM who heard conversations at that party that he was part of a 5 man team that was developing several variations of new OHV V-8 that would replace the Flathead. They bribed him and gave GM there V-8 which was your SBC. Today's 5th Generation LS engine is all FORD designs. Nothing remains of the old SBC.
Ztk its the slicks that come stock with the car that or.the raceing slicks they burn out to melt the slicks cayseing the tires to grip the ground
Just saw an auction on tv where they had a V16 Caddy. OHV by the looks of it. Ford is good at building complicated engines that are a pain to work on and need turbos or superchargers to get the hp of a 7 liter pushrod LS. The LS is the new Mouse motor as the Mod is the new sb Ford, along with the new Hemi. I switched to the LS because you can make more hp for less money and they are more durable.
WOW BAD ASS
which ford are you talking about? last time i checked they were 4 valve push rod engines and dohc VVT, doesnt the NA 5.0 make just as much power as the camaros 6.2 without a supercharger? the boss 302 has 450hp without a supercharger that is 55hp short of GM's 7L ls7 in my opinion being able to make more power per liter without boost takes smarter engineering
ALL I GOT TO SAY IS WHAT A FUKEN BEAST
The exact words that came out of my mouth, "holyyyyy sssshhit"
A Ford engineer originally designed the SBC, but Henry Ford wanted to stick to cheap and dependable transportation for all, so he decided not to use it. Then some years later the same Ford engineer went to work for Chevy where he then presented the design/idea to one of the Chevrolet brothers, and this is where they got the design or at least the original idea behind the SBC which failed. After the war there were 5 engineers who were developing OHV V-8 at Ford. 1 of them defected to GM.
how much hp
No secret, you can look up all the COPO specs on GMs site including all engine parts.
ok here it is i agree with some of these guys far as comparing to imports. now that being said you have general motors with the zl1 package for the camaro that almost performs as well as godzilla nissan's gtr now ford has came a long way with the same platform that all muscle cars came from over 50 years ago and with the right techs and drivers can tune ones suspension to do really well but the track versions should really consider a different rear suspension of some sort
Hell! I used to do that in My Bullock Truck!
This COPO runs CC/SA. National record for CC/SA is 9.43. The 8 second CJs are AA/S and AA/SA, so they should be faster. I don't remember ever hearing any Super Stock car in the 7s, and none of the national records are in the 7s for any SS car.
What makes you think a Chevy 12 bolt made by strange is a Ford 9''?
Are you a Chevy guy and do you own a LS.
Holy hell .500 plus lift cam batman
Try .630.. eh eh eh
Chevy327TurboFire Stock LS7 crate motor is .591 intake / .591 exhaust.
The COPO 427s dont have stock LS7 cams they run P/N 88958773 cams with 1.8:1 rockers... specs are .630/.630 lift, 233/276 Deg. of duration @ .050, 107 Deg. LSA
THE LS IS ALL BASED ON FORD DESIGNS.. 1.Ford firing order. 2. Ford oiling system 3. Ford cooling system. 4. Ford 10 bolt head pattern 5. Ford cross bolt mains. The LS block is a copy of the modular block with thicker webbing. 6. Ford centered thrust bearing. 7. Ford style angle plug. 8. Ford symmetrical head layout with 427 FE high riser ports. 9. Ford Cosworth beehive valves. THE LS IS TOTALLY FORD.
is it a LSX block at 5.3L? LSX only cost $2 grand and can make 2500hp. I think an equal ford motor would cost $8 grand just for the block
Mac, this car runs under the record so.... not only is it cool. It beat all the Ford's in its class.
I like to say this is proof. don't doubt chevorlet
Check again, the light is red in the opposite lane not ours. Besides it has to be broken at an NHRA event if you knew what you were talking about.
Interesting to efi stall after burnout
I'd love to see this vs the cobra jet. I'm a mustang person but this camaro...
The LS firing order is a 351Windsor/351Cleveland/5.0/4.6Mod and has been around since the 60's. Half the guys who make up 5.0 Pro were once Chevy guys. The 5.0 classes are not restricted to Fords only. Chevys can also run in those classes but the reason the SBC does'nt is because it can't compete against the small block Ford. This was the reason they created the LS. The LS is 100% a Ford copy.
That must be why a Ole Henry is damn near obsolete on a Dirt Track
@@joshpitts7256 DIRT TRACK RACING IS SLIP AND SLIDE AND BASED ON THE HIGH SKILL OF A DRIVERS ABILITY. SO IT DOESN'T MATTER IF IT'S A LAWN MOWER ENGINE. GM STILL HAS THEIR TENACLES IN DIRT TRACK RACING. THE SBC IS A CHEAP COOKIE CUTTER MOTOR AND THE REASON THEY USE IT.
NHRA allowed a 428 package for the 2010 model year. In sportinasplinters words, go check NHRA blueprints for 2010 and, yes, those 2010's are still allowed to compete. Robbie Hudlow runs a 2010 stroker 428 in the same class as this car in the vid and this car beat it in CC/SA class.
That's the way I feel too. And there is nothing that gives me more wood than having over 1000BHP under the hood stalking wouldbe street races only to seriously spank them.
Too bad stupid laws prohibit cars like this COPO from driving on the street. This one is nothing short of one badass ride.
I would love to see Chevy make an NHRA superstock version of the 'Vette.
that just scared the fuck outa me...in a good way
its an awesome car but the problem i have with it is the original copo camaro from 1969 was a base camaro with the 427 bbc, it was a complete sleeper you had know idea that there was a 427 under the hood until you raced it, i think this car should be the same a base or rs camaro but with the ls7
Does sportinawood not know that most drag cars are autos..?
Boy you guys are funny. To the Ford guys, you fail to remember this is a stock LS7 from GM you can buy it out of their catalog. The GM 327 that is an option has both 4.0l or 2.8l Whipple Superchargers. They are much faster than the 427 n.a. engine. This car will soon run against one of the other Ford blower engines once it gets the blower engine installed. It will beat the Ford's list love it did Arkansas Indy.
Oooooooo if i ever get rich imma have a drag strip just for tha copo!!
A stout L88 or ZL1 427 BBC such as was found in COPO Camaro's was no sleeper unless the person was deaf or clueless. Even a ss396 with a huge cam sounds awesome, but a L88 or ZL1 is a dead giveaway.
Lol I've heard it all now ls is Ford I have an article from Ford pretty much saying they need to step their game up against the ls1
The time had to be about a 9.7 around there
What does it weigh? Not all that impressive unfortunately unless it was heavy.
Gives me a woody!!
Does it use a gerator oiling pump like the Ford modular engine? Is the block a cross bolt main design like the Ford modular? Is the thrust being located in the center like a Ford? Is the firing order exactly like the 351, 5.0 and modular engine? THE ANSWER TO ALL THESE QUESTIONS ARE YES. THE LS BLOCK IS ACTUALLY A MODULAR FORD THEY ADAPTED A CAM INTO WITH THICKER WEBBING. NEXT WE WILL MOVE ONTO THE HEADS.
Capital letter caught your attention and taught you some race history. I typed in lower case are you happy now.
damn...
They won Trans-Am against Ford by Cheating. Penske froze the fuel and was able to get a extra gallon of gas into the gas tank. They got 22 gallons into a 21 gallon tank. When the 302 bosses and others came in the refuel the Z28 had a wide open track with no obstacles allowing the Z28 to make fast entries into turns gaining lap time. From the suspension to the all aluminum 302 engine they were all aftermarket non-factory. The body was the only thing of Chevy production.
waaaahhh!!!
thats why i have one each
Congrats on the win! Bottom line...Its still a bracket race.
Ford Motor Company as we know it today is at least Henry's second venture into the automobile industry. The first Ford Motor Company was called henry Ford company. In 1902 Henry sold the company. That company was renamed Detroit Motor Company and eventually renamed to Cadillac. That being said Henry Ford was the predecessor to Cadillac and thus GMC.
yea sure
That's a badass car I'm glad I did my part as a taxpayer to help make this car:) lol all jokes aside that LS7 is sick
Bad azz. Where them cobra joks at
To whoever DISLIKED this video, you ought to be growing daisies.
WAAH WAAAH IT"S NOT FAIR ! SLOW DOWN !!!
Chevy power. Almost on the bumper
HORY SHET!!!
The A/Stock record is/was 9.94.....
I can only dream of what adrenaline rush it must have been like to be in it while going full on balls to the wall.
LOL...Racelogpro you couldnt be any more right....Hey ProOutlaw105 lets see if tasca makes it on the list for Indy....not a chance
nice run a ls7 huh i'm seeing a low 8sec car here!!!!!!!!!
Your quickest SCJ's at Indy this week were auto's Bozo. They run the 9.40 index. Again, if you need educated on what these terms mean, just ask. You should get you displacements correct too. There are COPO's with 327(5.3) with 2.9ltr blowers and 327(5.3) with 4.0 blowers then there's the 427 N/A. The quickest SCJ's for 2012 models are 330(5.4) with a 4.0 blowers. SCJ's also run the 330(5.4) with 2.9 blower and the 428 N/A cars. All these combos run different classes.
Funny guys all of your complaining. This LS7 is 100% stock from GM in COPO form. It does sound bad ass and has more left in it. Trying to compare a stock LS7 to a blower Ford is a waste of time.... apples and oranges. The Ford may be smaller but also has no pushrods and 4 valves... not even an engine to compare with. Just wait until I get ahold of the Whipple.
You GM guys really have a sense of humor..the Ford is running a 5.0 little 302 up against 5.3 supercharged and a LS7 427 105 cubic inch bigger which is NOW WAY a stock 500hp with that big a cam. I will not take anything away from the Camaro in that class who is the quickest ET and MPH..Tasca's Cobra Jet with a 5.0 give credit where credit is do and even funnier the Drag Pack with a V10 where is their excuse?
Since when does ford offer a 428 cobra jet? (Not counting the old ones so don"t start)
He watched Carl Tasca shift his Liberty trans equipped SCJ in the famous SCJ 7 second video and has determined all SCJ's are sticks and they all run 7's in class. I think it is the only SCJ video he has ever seen and I'm certain he doesn't follow class racing from the little knowledge he had before he was schooled here. His knowledge of drag racing ends at track rentals or test and tune.
1:00 Fast and Furious
Vin diesel approves
well sure to a trained ear but if you didnt know much about cars you would never know, but still i thnk it should look like a stock camaro just to resemble the true look of the old copo's dog dish hubcaps and all
Ahhhh, how about all you Ford fans go comment on Ford videos? If you don't like Chevy, cool. Those of us who who do could give a shit to be quite blunt. Go watch the mustang videos and worship it. Stop being a bunch of adolescent trolls. I'll now take a moment to appreciate this amazing American machine, good day.
