      It's gone full-circle. In the 'you wouldn't steal a car' era, individuals pirated products from companies, taking what didn't belong to them.
      Now consumers genuinely purchase products and companies retain control and ownership over them. They are effectively "downloading us". Companies be like "Look at me, I am the pirate now".

    I lived in Japan and they have had a chauffeur service for decades now. You call the company (almost everyone has it on their phone because it's a large and subsidized business), they send a car with two people, one driver drives you and your car to your destination and then you pay and then the driver hops back into the company car and drives off. It's 1.5 x the rate of a normal taxi and is a godsend for going out drinking.

      Eh, I don't mind it - because I'll stick to my 50-year-old car that I added heated seats to on my own. Actually, come to think of aftermarket heated seats, I wonder if people will come up with mods to bypass these systems, say for the heated seats to re-wire them directly into the car's electrical system with a manual switch instead of using the computer? Regardless of the subscription fee, just having a manual switch would be an upgrade on its own. Would surely void warranties, but would probably be something people would do the moment the warranty expires. Companies will try to stop it, but at some point even corporate-dictated US laws will protect consumers' right to modify the stuff they (supposedly) own.

    I would make a big distinction between the ones that actually cost the manufacturer money and the ones that just hold your hardware hostage.
    Anything with connectivity, such as internet in your car, Netflix/Spotify makes sense to me.

  • @CuriouserArchive

    The OnStar one makes sense to me because you're paying for access to a cellular network which is required for the feature to work as well as the people who run the service, although I'm not sure how this feature is still relevant in 2023 when pretty much everyone has a cell phone. Same thing with the chauffeur; after all, that person has to be paid for their time. But things like heated seats are literally just paywalling the enablement of hardware that is sitting in the car already, thus making the ongoing cost to the manufacturer literally $0. That's just ridiculous and thus anything they are paid for these "services" is 100% profit.

Also one to the lady who was smoking Marlboros, drinking Faygo and eating pizza wanting me to turn on her Acadia so she could drive it to the police station to have them break open the windows and unlock the door from the inside switch so she could get out of her car.

      As OnStar is an ongoing service that requires data plans and actual human workers to provide, it makes sense for that to cost something, unlike the heated seats and extra power that are already there - I see that as kind of a different thing and far more justified. It's more like a service plan than unlocking a feature.

    • @bartbartholomew
      @bartbartholomew Рік тому +22

      OnStar, self driving, and the vehicle swap thing are worth a subscription. In those cases, the company needs to continue to support the service with satellite connection's, updates, or physical exchanges. Ongoing support costs money. The amount they want is more than I would pay for them, but they are worth a monthly fee. They didn't cover remote start with your cell phone, but that would also be worth a subscription. But anything that does not need continuous support from the manufacturer should never be a subscription.
      But starting your car from a key fob, heated seats, and engine performance should never be a monthly fee. Those should be included with the price of the vehicle.

    • @quillmaurer6563
      @quillmaurer6563 Рік тому +1

      @@bartbartholomew My first thought was to agree on the engine performance bit, but someone pointed out that what it really is is a warranty to cover a car being pushed harder. What it could be seen as is a performance option or upgrade with warranty. Such an upgrade, if done aftermarket, would void the powertrain warranty because it increases risk of breaking it. This is the option to have the higher power and warranty, but pay for it, which actually makes sense. It makes sense for this to cost something, as the company is more likely to have to pay for repairs. Basically a question of how fast you want to go, how much you want to stress components, versus how much you want to spend on the warranty that covers said components. This doesn't exist for gasoline cars as visibly, but does indirectly - a performance car will be at greater risk of breaking, and the warranty cost more, but this is included in the purchase price which is already higher due to different hardware, so it's not obvious. This is just pushing the same hardware harder, and can be enabled via software. I'd see it as more defensible if they have the option (even if strongly discouraged) to enable it for free at your own risk, voiding the powertrain warranty, or to enable for free (with warnings that you are risking more repair costs) after the warranty expires.

Unlimited data for Americans was 20 bucks while Canadians got bent like rebar at a demolition site, paying 100 bucks for 20 GB.
      Navigation was sometimes on its own for legacy/grandfathered users but was unable to be transferred to newer vehicles.

Also, with Toyoya you get their version of OnStar where you press the button and talk to a live person, who obviously gets paid. Sounds fair to me. The whole 'subscription' thing is so that rich bastards can claim them as business-expenses, which, on top of being an excuse for companies to raise their prices, also reduces the amount of tax they pay! That then means wage-earners end up paying an even larger percentage of the country's taxes!

    Here’s a question: if you’re paying a subscription for a car feature, and that feature fails (heated seats stop working, remote start quits working, etc…), is the manufacturer obliged to fix it? You are paying for a service, not a good, at this point, and typically in the service industry, companies are obliged to fix their services when they don’t work.
    For example, the way that Apple’s contract is worded for their operating systems on Mac OS and iOS devices is that you owns a hardware, but you are licensed in the software to that particular device. This means that you do not own that copy of the software, and you cannot legally put it on, an unauthorized device (like a PC or Android). What sucks about that is it makes your hardware difficult to upgrade because you cannot transfer your license to another computer, but the benefit of that is when a bad version comes out, and Apple is obliged to fix the problems that are created by said bad version.
    If the heaters in BMW’s seats fail, does BMW have to fix the heaters for free so that you can continue paying for your subscription service?

    These charges make 100% sense if they say "We're going to charge you $150 a month to lease this vehicle with absolutely no features. No cruise control. No heat. No ac. Nothing. Each one of those features will be an additional charge per month to your lease. So you're essentially renting a package like you do with insurance. On the other hand, if you don't lease, and you spent $70,000 on a vehicle. Preventing people from using what they already purchased in full unless they pay more money is theft. I would boycott BMW and whoever else is doing it. That immediately puts them in the league of loan sharks, pyramid schemes, paycheck advance, etc.
