The all-new BMW M5 has finally been unveiled!
BMW has been teasing it for several months, but we’ve finally got our hands on the finished product!
So what’s changed compared to the previous edition? On the outside, there are many changes over the previous edition as well as the standard 5 Series. For starters, it’s wider and also comes with a bespoke sculpted bonnet. There’s a light-up grille, with some vents built into it, and there’s also a huge, aggressive-looking bumper that’s packed full of huge air intakes. Along the side, you can see the car is lower, while around the back there’s a boot lip spoiler, a huge diffuser, and a set of large quad exhaust pipes.
Step inside and the M5 is a seriously impressive place to be. There’s an M steering where, coupled with smatterings of M treatments, whether it be logos, red icons and a starter button, as well as M stripes on the seat belts. There’s a set of sports seats coated with Marino leather, and there’s an updated infotainment system right in the centre of the dash.
Then we come to what’s hiding under the bonnet. When it comes to petrol-power you’ll find the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 as in the XM, while there’s also an electric motor. Combined, they produce a glorious 727hp and 1,000Nm! These work together to propel the new M5 to 62mph in 3.5 seconds.
However, there’s a small issue - that’s 0.2 seconds slower than the previous car! The reason? The hybrid system and other additions mean this car comes in at 2,435kg - 500kg heavier than the previous M5!

And about 70kg, by adding xdrive with same engine it was 5kg lighter. Now only sporty cars in bmw M cars line are M2, M3/M4.

Absolutely agree. No amount of chassis upgrades will compensate for a 500kg increase in weight. I can’t imagine this will feel as good to drive as the previous model. A shame tbh

evs are heavy as hell compared to normal cars but still use a lot less energy for the same outcome. The efficiency of an electric powertrain is making a lot more difference than the few hundred kilos more. That said i dont think a car like a m5 should be a hybrid it doesnt really make sense.
@@marcroyale13 yep that does not take under consideration power line loos before charging and the fact those batteries tend to lose charge while doing nothing for a while.
@@hagestad yes it does not but when a car uses an equivalent of 2l of fuel per 100km even 10 or 15% charging loss would not be significant. And my friends hybrid (I dont have a ev or hybrid) lost about 3% of charge while he was on a 2 week vacation.

The new one is heavier and should be less agile, but it's clear the new one will be fast while its way more luxury and way better for daily drive then any other M5.
I'm pretty sure the new M5 will do few things so good, that it will be the better option for all day drive.
But if u look at the comments, u will see some people even think the last good M5 is the M5 E60.

well this car just turned my rapidly depreciating F90 into a sensible investment.
I work for a used car dealer, trust me the F10 and G30 5 series and M models have slowed significantly in depreciation. While you're surely at a loss rn with the F90, it'll be a win very later on

I get your point but usually weight isn’t that big of a problem with Evs because the battery, which holds most of the weight, is placed at the lowest point of the car so it usually feels not that heavy as the number suggests. For example the Porsche Taycan drives excellent on track even tho it weights as much as a truck. Still 2.4ts is really heavy but I don’t think it will be a huge problem.

@@tomdornieden4053 I get your point, but I respectfully disagree. Sure, a car can be heavy and still drive very well, Porsche and BMW are very good with chassis conception and tuning. But take the same great chassis, remove 700kg and you have an even better handling car.
The real problem is that it costs more to remove weight than add power and hybrid systems to meet emissions regulations. And it's not just a problem about batteries, if you take only the petrol M5s in the graph here you can see how much they just gained weight over the generations...
@@Abrvpt Most of the weight comes from the growth in size and safety. The M3 is the new old M5 I guess. Performance hybrids are interesting tho. The new 992.2 Carrera GTS is a really cool concept I think as the increase in weight isn’t that big.

All everyone talks about is emissions, but NOBODY talks about the fact that heavier cars produce more microplastics from heavier tyre usage, and that they wear out the road surface SIGNIFICANTLY more than lighter cars (the relation between car weight and road wear is exponential, this means if a car is 2x heavier, it will wear out the road surface 16 TIMES MORE).
Is this why there are even more pots holes than before?
You expect lawmakers to think through a situation thoroughly? Nah just buzzwords and trend of the week so that they appear busy. It's a joke

This whole emissions stuff prevents fun small, light and cheap cars from being made, as manufacturers try to sideskirt the regulations by building these monsters that few can afford. This effectively kills off any semblance of hope for young petrolheads.
Bro people don’t know yet that electric cars aren’t that ecofriendy because mostly electricity production ain’t too green and there’s still no clue what people should do with used car batteries, which contains very harmful components for earth and planet in overall. So I don’t even know when will they find out that hybrids also ain’t that good for the environment as manufacturers say.
1) the microplastics emitted from heavier EVs pale in environmental impact compared to ghg emissions from ice vehicles 2) many plug-in/EV manufacturers are creating tires with less rolling resistance ---> less tire wear
3) gas cars are getting in the same weight class as industry leader EVs - who use lighter batteriers with less rare metals(like LFP batteries), meaning that this problem would be happening regardless of whether the industry shifted to EVs
There's no debate that ev cars are better for the environment, but yeah, the driving experience will be compromised until EV manufacturers figure out how to engage drivers at the same level with the disadvantage of having no sound. However, this will probably happen as current EVs are focusing on this(Hyundia Ioniq 5n).
Edit - yeah idk why BMW made this car so shit. If you make it heavier, you need to put more power. Seems like they got lazy and didn't bother to develop on their engine or come up with lighter motors so they could put more.

The two of the best decisions I ever made in life: Keeping the last production 2018 F30 340i spec'd out, and a 2023 F90 M5.
Getting that F90 M5 was prob the best decision ever. I am beyond disappointed in BMW.

My parents had a GMT400 Chevy Suburban in the mid 1990's, and it was a pretty high trim level variant, with an aftermarket entertainment system (TV, VHS etc.). That thing weighed 2.65 tons. So this new M5 seems to be quite the porker.

This new m5 looks a bit like the old v10 m5 from front/side profile I’m loving it! I’m going to go try get information and try get a allocation on one in my local bmw dealer on the weekend. Thanks @Carwow and Matt Watson hopefully this will be my third new bmw I’ve bought in the last 10 years

Yes they do, if it means going faster and it not having much input on the driving experience.

@@APJ4 Some will say the E60 M5 is more emotional to drive because of the V10 but in reality it's a ticking time bomb. I also like the F10 M5 30 Jahre Edition.
@@steven_taylor_I’ve had both, positives and negatives personally I like the F more simply because of how it drives and increased comfort levels. Having said that obviously the sound is better from the E. Not a ticking time bomb though it breaks you rebuild it😏
