SG Works SKS Stock Kit Review and Thoughts

  • UPDATE: I have since added a 1/2" riser for the optic, moved it back to the rear of the rail instead of the front, and removed the foregrip. I am more convinced than ever that a fore grip is NOT NECESSARY at all. I honestly like it a lot better in terms of handling without the foregrip. Thanks to everyone for watching!!
    A brief review and a few thoughts on the Shernic Gun Works SKS Stock Kit. Discussion on other essential upgrades and non-essential accessories. Trigger job was done by Tom Prince aka Kivaari of www.kivaari.com and I HIGHLY recommend it, for the money more than the stock! makes the trigger 1000x better, and that is even more appreciated when dealing with the mushy bullpup linkage.

    Thanks for a very honest post. I watched a demo of the Tavor TAR21 and the two recommended ways to hold the weapon. The SG is almost identical. You assessment of the tri-rail agrees with the ergonomic excellence of the design of both the SG and Tavor. Best regards

    . To shorten the barrel you'll also need to get it re-crowned. No feed issues. Sightmark is great. Very solid optic for the money (it should be noted that the weaver rail on the SG stock doesn't perfectly mate with the sightmark's quick detatch mount, leaves a little play. I put a little strip of rubber cut off a bicycle tube on the rail before mounting and it snugs it right up perfect) I hate using "rigged up" methods like that but it really does work well.

    Right on. Mine has always been a paratrooper model and so it already has the correct size gas port and everything works right. Thousands of rounds without hiccup. Mine is a 16" barrel with about 2" of muzzle device on it. If you knew your shit right you could cut it to 14.5" and then permanently attach a muzzle device to get a 16" total barrel length. But not really necessary because as you can see length isn't an issue.

    That's helps. I purchased the tri-rail and have some fore-grips in my amazon cart. But was not sure if really needed as I have just installed the kit on my SKS and it feels fairly stable as is. Thinking of having just some simple adds because you can get too much crap on your gun. Really just thinking I will add red dot, sling, and backup sights.

    I also have the same sight on my AR, if you look on the underside of the sight you'll notice theres a nut on the clamping side of the mount if you tighen that nut with the wrench it came with it will take that slack out and you wont have to "rigg it up" .... nice stock just got mine,waiting for my trigger group to come back cant wait!!!

      I did actually find this a little while after I posted this vid. I do still however have to keep a small shim under the sight because the rail on the SG Works isn't a true picatinny and causes the sight to sit slightly off center. Thanks for the comment!

    I've also since removed the fore-grip. It really isn't necessary and I actually think it feels and looks better without.

      Did the same thing. The grip is just too low compared to the respective center of gravity.

    You did a good job on your video buddy I'm no doubt sold money is tight so I've studying for months what the best for my money would be but now I've got myself down to SKS with a bullpup conversion

    • @thomaswde
      @thomaswde  10 років тому

      If you do have an SKS and want to convert it I do recommend the SGW kit. It's quality is certainly impressive for the cost. Getting the trigger group tuned is also a great idea as it certainly makes mine a lot more accurate and fun to shoot. Thanks for the props!

      Thank you Thomas for getting back to me do you have a ak 74 or 47 you recommend

    • @thomaswde
      @thomaswde  10 років тому +1

      Dylancla Sure do, I recommend the 47 over the 74 due to the availability and price of 7.62mm and because it is the same stuff you alrready use in your SKS. You can't hardly buy a "bad" AK47 but you can buy a damn good one. I recommend a Zastava, Serbia manufactured AK-47 if you can find one at a price that you are comfortable with. Century Arms sells one. Long review short, it's the good stuff. Heavy duty, teak furniture, chromed bolt (awesome when slinging old corrosive ammo), and the bolt locks back after final round (not a common AK feature) Hope the info is useful, thanks!

    The stock rear sling mount mounts to the same screws that hold your extended magazine release. Not sure why nobody is doing it that way.

    Wish I had bought a paratrooper in many ways now. Thinking about shortening the barrel to 16.1" on my standard SKS. As I understand, the paratrooper is the same just with a shorter barrel and a larger gas port? Any feed issues with the para trooper? Is the sightmark holding up well?

    I HAVE AN SKS THAT ACCEPTS AK MAGS. WILL THIS KIT WORK WITH THE D-MODEL SKS?

  • @elireloaded
    @elireloaded 10 років тому

    Thanks for the reply. I have no problem with "rigging". If you are like me Obama already has us spending more on guns and ammo then I would anyways and every cent counts. If I had $2,500 then I would buy the Tavor with the Eotech but your setup is a great low cost option. I have seen some re-crowning videos, that all seems easy enough but I am concerned about feed issues without also enlarging the gas port. Anyways, a good sight is what I am looking for now and that unit looks great.

    Do you think you have the room on the platform to fit a magnifier behind the holographic sight?

    • @thomaswde
      @thomaswde  10 років тому

      Absolutely. I have however since this video added a 1/2" riser and moved the reflex sight back about 4" and find that to be preferable for me. But if you wanted to do a magnifier there is plenty of room.

    Did you thread the barrel for that brake? I can't stand the useless front sight on mine

    • @thomaswde
      @thomaswde  9 років тому +2

      I did not. I bought a muzzle device adapter off eBay. It is a pin on. People complained that it did not stay on well during use but I clamped the barrel in a vice and set it in with lock tight and it isn't going anywhere.

    well done, top quality review, educated and well spoken, exception badassery ?!?! lol. I have redone three crates of Sks for customers, and the only other thing I could possibly recommend for your kick as rifle is machining the bolt to allow mag removal and insertion wil bolt is closed, it's easy to do yourself and worth every second that it takes to doit, (word of advice, you can easily doit yourself, just TAKE YOUR TIME, sand/grind a little bit at a time then exaime and spray with wd40 to cool then repeat, just youtube the process, their are a fair number of vids on this project! I am jealous of the stock as it is illegal in canada to import bullpup stocks to modify any fire arm although we can buy a Tavor bullpup and it is classified as a restricted weapon meaning, we can only use it at a licesened gun range and not out in the country or for hunting! Canada has dam near as stupid rules as california!!!! Power to the "Free-man and the 2nd admendment" shoot straight and keep your stick on the ice! peace out my Brother Mr. Smith

    • @thomaswde
      @thomaswde  9 років тому

    What muzzle brake is this that you are using?

    • @thomaswde
      @thomaswde  10 років тому +1

      I am using a AK pattern thread adapter that is attached using set screws and high temp lock tight, screwed onto that is a TAPCO A2 "Birdcage" style flash suppressor. Virtually eliminates muzzle flash when shooting at night, really saves the night vision and keeps you on target. Adapter is about $7 and flash hider is about $8-$10.

    FWIW, the only decent buffer is the H type, that sandwiches between the bolt and the receiver. Your Buffer Technologies buffer transfers recoil force to the receiver cover and its retaining pin-not good-Gearhead222

    could never understand why any one in their right mind wants to cut the dam barrel down so short that the slug gets about a quarter turn before it leaves the tube and why put an sks in a shit box plastic housing and trying to be a tactical cowboy it is shit like this that gives military guns a bad rap like really what fkn good is it for thats right up close and personal that shows your mind set because lets face it the accuracy is gone. leave the dam things the way they are and quit making bubas out of them or go out and buy a dam tavor for god sake

    • @thomaswde
      @thomaswde  5 років тому

      The barrel is still 16". You can clearly see the action is all the way at the back of the rifle. No functional modifications were made to the rifle at all and all original parts can easily go back on.

    А very stupid idea to remake the SCS into a bullpup ... The SCS already has a disgusting trigger and now these long pulls ... Not only that - now all the gases will hit in the face ...
    And what's the weight after reconstruction?
