Coramelimane I honestly like that they're neutrally flavored. They're not too overwhelmingly sweet but sweet enough to be enjoyable and satisfy a sweet tooth. That's what I like about Chinese sweets
actually, we usually use concentrated sugar called rock candy or a form of brown sugar in bars with water and ginger to make a syrup that usually goes on a lot of the deserts like almond jelly. This way we can control the level of sweetness. At least that's the way my parents did it at our restaurant.
Joseph Greene I actually know them personally, and did a video with Diane for her channel over a month ago. I'm also a comment moderator for this channel lol.
This is just upsetting to watch people not enjoying sweets from my childhood. Asian deserts are typically not very sweet which I find more pleasant to my palate.
I mean it's white people. They see food that isnt factory processed as weird and dismiss it like the bone. Some cant even see a fish with a head on it.
Y'all ate almond jelly by itself? That's like eating shaved ice without topping and syrups, what's the point? Although I'm willing to admit we're not known for our sweets for a reason. Mooncakes are probably the best of our traditional sweets. Next time you guys dip into the Chinese well, I'd suggest streetfood, as in food you can literally buy on the street off a stand, China/Hong Kong/Taiwan all have their unique things and they are fantastic
Chinese here. 1. The first thing, I think it is "杏仁豆腐", right? Well there are different kinds of food with the same name, but all of them are dessert, not treat. Also it is not supposed to be eaten like that. They should be put into some sweet soup (basically some sugar + water), and put in fridge to be a cool dessert after meal. 2. Pumpkin pie are supposed to be eaten hot, not cold. Cold pumpkin pies are just fatty and disgusting. 3. The red bean bun also should be eaten while it is still hot or warm, like just out of the steam pot. Yes, some good restaurants can make it good even it colds down, but basically, no, they are not supposed to be eaten like that. 4. The last one, Tang Hu Lu. The name shows what kind of food it is. In Chinese, Tang stands for "sugar", and Hu Lu means "gourd". "Sugar" shows it is a food with fruits that sugar-coated, and "gourd" shows the shape: the fruits are skewed so that it looks like a gourd somehow. The one using hawthorn is the most traditional one, because back the time, Tang Hu Lu was usually sold on the street in winter so that the sugar coat would not melt, but hawthorn is the only kind of "fruit" we could get in a cold northern winter. As for now, there are different kind of Tang Hu Lu, like with small tomatoes, strawberries or grapes. Basically I like your video, but I have an advice: perhaps next time you should do some research about how to eat the thing correctly before getting other people's reaction. It's just like when Song Hua egg is ranked as one of the most disgusting food in the world: of course it is if you eat it directly, but no one in China would ever eat it that way.
Who shoved their finger in my bun? I asked the same question when I went to the doctor for a routine checkup and ended up getting more than I bargained for
Lmao Irish Jesus cracked me up this whole video 😂😂😂 between his weird "what was that!" His huge bite into the red bean thing and the reaction after and him grabbing the weird fruit things and swinging them around with them attached lmao 😂😂😂😂 I was dying 😂😂😂
I feel like they went down the Chinese aisle of a store, found some random foods, left the store, ordered the shittiest style of that food from a sketchy vendor, and gave it to these people.
I’m a Chinese here, let me just clarify couple of things here 1. The first thing, never seen it in my life, never eaten it before. Definitely not a Chinese treat, probably some fake American Chinese treat. 2. The red bean bun, it’s not a dessert! That thing can be a substitute for rice if you don’t want to eat rice. You normally eat it with other dishes not just by itself. 3. Tanghulu, that is a dessert comes from northern part of china. It is best consumed when it’s -20-30 degrees outside and you put that outside and let it be cold and eat it. It supposed be cold, sweet and sour.
This kinda shit happens all the time even when Irish ppl do American shit, lots of Americans from different places keep saying they've never seen/had this that blah blah, but truth is they don't travel, nor do they care to try different things from other states! Same here, almond pudding or jelly is so freaking popular in Sichuan, Chongqing Guangdong etc. specially in some hotpot restaurants, sometime with peanuts on top, it's cooled and suppose to refresh the palate after hot spicy food. Even more popular in Taiwan. So i guess, think next time before you say something specially if you wanna totally wipe something off from a country.
I'm honestly convinced you people didn't ask an actual Chinese person to give you ideas what to eat and instead picked random desserts you saw on the internet. You could have had them eat things like egg tarts, mango pudding, tong sui (english translation: sugar water), etc.
The biggest cultural gap I experienced between western and eastern, is the appreciation of delicate, subtle, light flavors, colors, sensations or even relationships. That explains why Chinese are relatively shy, introvert, mincy, zigzag.
Having been to China twice I was surprised I didn't recognize any of these. Closest was the red bean paste filled bun, I couldn't tell but it didn't look like a steamed bun (馒头) or gluttons rice flower dough. Where was the Durian milk candy or the Chinese version of a crepe sometimes called Hong Kong desert? Oh can't forget 大白兔!
Shannon Keenan you two killed it, it's always better when you guys team up with people you hang out with outside of work. The chemistry is so much better!
The red bean paste is adzuki/azuki bean paste. It is loved and preferred in Asian countries, such as Japan and China. Different flavors for different folks.
I'm not sure you understand why that doesn't help. If you eat something twice and both times say you've never had it before... work out the error there.
From what i gather from reading the comments it appears that western desserts tend to be much sweeter than chinese ones, so that may be why they think they taste bland.
They should try different Chinese moon cakes, I've had salt and pepper cakes from Shanghai which were great and flaky and printed (with the design on top?) fruit, nut and egg yolk cakes in the US... these I hated, tasted like they went bad. They also have summer mung bean cakes. I love egg tarts tho, gotta try that one.
Thomas Schwiertz Yeah but they're still a staple as Chinese desserts go. Being Chinese myself, I agree, the Chinese aren't really known for their desserts. Moon cake weird me out but there are some good desserts out there. The ones they tested... not so much. Then again they could have been make crappy, who knows.
It's weird how non-asians are unused to any texture besides "not weird to me". Every single time it's something they don't like, it's nothing to do with flavor and everything to do with texture. So odd.
i2h Don't think French would have problems with these texture, but British or rather most people from Anglo countries can't handle jelloy & chewy texture, and will definitely freak out if it's slimy.

Chinese desserts are very neutrally flavored if they do use a sugar, they normally use honey, and they're supposed to be served with tea.

I met Irish Jesus the other day in Dublin and we had a whinge about how early the Christmas decorations were going up. He's a sound man I must say
Irish Hunger how are you getting on buddy 😆 it's a disgrace, not even end of November yet and Christmas ads on tv
At least he gets decorations put up for his birthday 😭😭😭
We had mince pies even though it wasn't even Halloween... Not complaining about that though because I ate like, the whole box every time :-P
I feel the same way.
Hun they were putting out Christmas trees & decorations Halloween day here....

They tasted weird cuz ur not supposed to eat almond jelly plain, they are often served in shaved ice, drinks, or sweet soups.

But there's always that disappointment when you think something is going to be chocolate but it turns out to be red bean ...
You know how many times I've thought a dessert was chocolate only to find out that it's *goddamn red bloody bean paste* ????
Red bean is awful, can't stand the stuff yuck! There's so many other delicious things in Chinese cuisine but red bean paste in food haunts me
Red bean paste is delish, but yeah if I thought it was gonna be chocolate and it's red bean there's definitely a little bit of disappointment.
Also why isnt the red bean sweet?

That bean bun bite and the face immediately after! 😆😆😆😆😆 I laughed so hard I choked on air!

Egg tart..meh. Egg Yolk Bun..passable at best...Mango pudding..okay I guess but ya know only so much time.
clothar23 what Im trying to say is what they had isnt really representative of chinese desserts. Theres way more options to chinese desserts.
I think they're going more with older, traditional chinese desserts.
these are all northern snacks. Egg tart, egg yolk bun, and mango pudding are all southern snacks.

Haoran L your comment actually ringed my bell that i have had it before, but it was on a piece of papaya. But definitely not a really northern food
To be fair enough, Northern Chinese people (adults) don't really eat many sweets on a daily basis do they? Not even ice cream.
i think the first one should be almond tofu, and it should be serve with a sugar syrup and preserved fruits
damn, those looked abysmal compared to the real stuff.

Beans in a dessert and almond in a jelly feel so wrong, but give me Peking duck anyday! Ugh, now I'm hungry...
Me Myself And Jesus , did they let you bring home a doggy bag? Seems appropriate since its Chinese food and all

Do people in Ireland have very heavy palates? Or is there something wrong with the food samples? Because, generally, these items are pretty sweet....
From what i gather from reading the comments it appears that western desserts tend to be much sweeter than chinese ones, so that may be why they think they taste bland.
