The secret to a really great melee build in this game is crouching. Once you knock the enemy down, crouch and then your attacks become stealth attacks (since they're stunned they can't see you) and suddenly you're doing x 2 dmg. It will also let you start working up the stealth skills, which get stupidly good and stacks really well with a fisticuffs spacer build
Yeap, highest level of damage for unarmed is 10x sneak attack that goes to 600+ damage power attack headshot. It still has a really low base damage though since the wakizashi on the same character would do near 3k sneak headshot power attack and the vaarun painblade does nearly 4k.
Dang, that's like a no holds barred beatdown. Like, they're already down and delirious, better sit on them and mma smash their skull in til they stop moving.
The issue is stealth detection is currently broken in the thanks to multiple bugs. Equally it's still massively made superfluous by guns doing all this and more
Tbh at this point I suspect it's intentional. Like, it would have been trivial to move the chests down or at least lock them or whatever, but they remain unlocked and accessible through the floor. And it's not like they just left it as is and didn't make a trivial fix. They had to position those chests, it's not like they ported their positions directly from Skyrim somehow, which means that they chose to put those chests there again, even though it would have been just as easy to put them a few units down.
This unarmed gameplay really brings me back to Morrowind where you have to punch your enemy for 15 minutes, while they lie crying on the ground and are unable to fight back, just to kill them. Bethesda games truly never change.
I think it speaks volumes that an "officially" supported playstyle (as in, one backed up by in-game skills/mechanics) requires all this exploitation to be _almost servicable_
Yeah it feels a bit pointless to have it in since theres so little you can do to make it work. At least in skyrim you could train your crafting skills to make overpowered gauntlets which made it interesting to figure out how strong you could get

The best unarmed RPG build I've encountered is in Daggerfall (Unity). In that game you need certain weapon materials to defeat certain enemies. A regular iron weapon won't defeat certain supernatural enemies, for instance. But your fists can defeat anything. And they get very powerful, and very fast. Star Field is not a partfect game at all. However, a positive thing I can say is that the rewards for faction quests were usually awesome. The Star Eagle ship is one of the best mid-weights in the game, the UC quest gives you sick looking armor and a minigun, that one corporation basically gives you the ability to win persuasion checks automatically and a unique stealth suit. These rewards felt impactful compared to Skyrim or Fallout 4, where you basically just got some money, or were made a leader with no tangible benefits aside from getting procedurally generated fetch quests.

Decided to change my jump key to a spare mouse button and yes, the pack works so much better. Hated the button change so I went into Razer Synapse and changed my space bar to be that mouse button when playing Starfield. Worked like a charm. And yes, it is SOOOOOO much better.
@@Ubayla I dunno. In the trailer a year ago, when it showed the boost and them firing on the spacers, the boost sure pushed him forward. After using it playing today I feel like this is how it was intended. The boost pack actually feels like more than just a shitty ladder.
To help with co2 drain in fights you can use the personal atmosphere power as you deplete your co2 to instantly replenish it and get unlimited co2 for a little bit.
Advice for the Red mile... don't take the elevator down, you are already outside, you don't need to. Work on maxing boost pack... then you can actually boost skip from the platform the entire way to the beacon, and then boost skip back to the elevator... no enemies needed.
In case anyone actually does want to do an unarmed build. Youll need suit mods and the right perks. But most importantly it gives you reason to use more powers and is actually very fun.
One of the origins gives you the targeting ability, meaning you can kill the enemy ship engines in the space tutorial, board and punch them to death. So it is quite possible to kill the tutorial enemies entirely with punchies.
Im willing to bet that the only reason games like Oblivion and Skyrim are still played so much today, its BECAUSE of the jank. If they fixed all the bugs amd exploits, amd released a nice clean well perfirming game, people woukd play it a few times and it would die. The comedy keeps people coming back and makes it iconic.
I mean... bigger bugs might be more complicated so they might take more time to fix and test to see the fix didn't break something else? Sure, it's Bethesda, who knows if they'll ever get fixed, but a month is not a lot of time to do this shit.
Oh, it can be broken. Spiff just didn't know all the strats at the time. You can get Nuerostrikes and Concealment maxed, knock everyone out, and finish them with sneak attacks. In fact, you don't even need to knock them all out. Sneak attacks trigger on unconscious targets even if other enemies detect you. Also, Isolation effects Unarmed damage, as does Red Trench and the secondary effect of Grav Dash (increasing damage). Basically, use chems, be alone, and Grav Dash towards an enemy and you can deal 115% more damage. Once they are unconscious all that crit damage from crouching and power attacking them is calculated. That means 10x sneak multiplier MULTIPLIED by 115%. Plus, you can infinitely stunlock unconscious enemies, since as they try to get back up (if they survive the first crit), you just knock them back out again. Nuerostrikes also has some weird unexpected synergy with things you don't expect. Two great examples of this are Mirrored and Grenades. If you have a Mirrored legendary Spacesuit any reflected damage counts as EM damage, and even still has the chance to knock out an enemy instantly. So an enemy shooting you across the room can accidentally knock themselves out. Even more funny is if you throw a grenade, the blunt impact can deal EM damage. So you can knock an enemy out by hitting them directly with a grenade, and they're unable to run to cover from the explosion. With the proper build and some Powers (Void form is amazing with Unarmed) you can be outright broken, especially with the blocking animation cancel for Power Attacks.
idk if it would take mods or not, but im ready to see you do a mele-only ship build. like is ramming even a thing? massive sheild and some pointy bits up front?
It is. Ive had a few instances where i had a ship at low health and boosted into it. Not sure how much damage it actually does, but its a thing. Viable option? I highly doubt it. Still an attack option? Yes.
The most baffling thing about unarmed combat in this game, is that there are a plethora of perks dedicated entirely to it, yet it is still godawful compared to everything else. Like I could understand if it was a weak mechanic that became strong once you had all or most of the perks, but it just remains bad the entire time AND you sunk a ton of points into some useless skills.
First - I truly enjoy your videos - extremely fun and polished delivery! Second - despite your near brilliant attempt at persuading me otherwise, I'm not really sure I think that proving that unarmed combat is a much slower slog in terms of killing your enemies compared with using the moderate array of lethal weapons available is a reasonable point. Third - i do agree that the ability to maximize this approach should be coupled with more dynamic fighting animation patterns and perhaps options with investment in martial arts leading to use of kicks, and increases in overall attack speed. Fourth - absolutely these attacks should have some scaling with level. Perhaps they could also add a way to customize your unarmed attacks so that you get a few different options that you can use that would appear as separate weapons which you could then use the favorite key to place in your hotbar. For instance, if each tier of martial arts gave you 3 new martial weapon attacks that then appeared permanently in your inventory as weapons you could place in this manner, it would let you customize your martial arts character nicely. The 3 options might include "rapid punch", "snap kick", "submission hold" [tier 1], "elbow strike", "flying kick", "eye strike" [tier 2], "karate chop", etc, etc With clear information as to the attack speed, damage, perhaps range or special effects for each. THAT would make martial arts a fun thing to take to offer close combat options for many builds.... Thanks for the fun and the inspiration! JW
I did my first playthrough as unarmed and had a lot of fun, but I used the sneak attack mechanics to do a lot more damage with the punches. worked out great!
Hey @thespiffingbrit -- here's a Starfield challenge for you. Make a character with the empath trait, take on Sarah Morgan as a follower, and do some full faction quest. This whole time, trigger the "Sarah Morgan dislikes that" event as many times as possible -- which I learned as an empath, gives you debuffs, which are stackable if she disapproves of multiple things. Try the Ryujin faction. She'll disapprove of quite a lot. But here's where it's really a challenge. It's like stringing someone along. You have to get her to dislike virtually everything you do without actually quitting as a follower. Oh, and here's a bonus. One of the Ryujin main NPCs is a tea drinker and hates coffee.

Thank you Todd Howard for continuing to make such perfect games! They just work!
*_SIXTEEN TIMES THE DETAIL_*
@@Double_Vision He didn't say 16x what though. 16x a blank piece of paper is 16 pieces of blank paper.
the doom music at 11:30 make this a thousands times better
Star Field is not a partfect game at all. However, a positive thing I can say is that the rewards for faction quests were usually awesome. The Star Eagle ship is one of the best mid-weights in the game, the UC quest gives you sick looking armor and a minigun, that one corporation basically gives you the ability to win persuasion checks automatically and a unique stealth suit. These rewards felt impactful compared to Skyrim or Fallout 4, where you basically just got some money, or were made a leader with no tangible benefits aside from getting procedurally generated fetch quests.
If you can read this, have a great, spiffing day
Cheers mate
🍻
You as well!
Lol this reads like Spiff is the F word. 🤣
You too!
Truly a shame you can no longer loot merchant’s chests
Yes, it reminded me of the Dawnstar chest in Skyrim, which still isn't patched to this day.
@@lance134679 because it's clearly a intended feature
Yeah... now you've got to actually play the game
@@TheSometimeAfter lol, “play”, you mean grind out credits to buy what you want? You watch TSB because he “has to play the game”, be less disingenuous.
@@JohnSmith-qm5xuthere are way better exploits for credits than the merchant chests. Spiff is just an old dog that hasnt learned the new tricks
I think you are missing some damage options here. I believe that if you stun everyone, you can then sneak, and do massive sneak attack damage on each one to finish them off.
I love this vid, more of these challenge videos please!!! I've sunk like 14 days into the game and finished most side quests and collected all collectibles and unique weapons/armours/achievements. Now I just enjoy watching the community. Keep it up bossman
When I saw people explain why Unarmed and its skills are useless, I knew Spiff was feverishly working out a way to make it overpowered.
Edit: Sadly he has failed. Our Lord and Savior Todd has forsaken us!
Great to see more content chap!
Glad you enjoy it!
Spiff wanted to make a gorgeous alien guy, but he just made awesome mustache Asmongold 😂
This went from Dollar Store Doom Slayer to Gotta go Fast
Once you see the resemblance, you can't unsee it.
He looks like the Lorax to me lol
On top of the drugs you already used and rebinding boost, they sell a drink at The Red Mile called Runners Rush with bonus movement speed, DR and O2 recovery.
There are some glitches that were present back in oblivion such as blocking and punching and the glitch with chest merchants was there in dawnstar too......perfectly balanced
'Field of the North Star: The Fisting' huge stomach churning expansion package.
Tod is really pushing the technology with those damage numbers.
Decided to change my jump key to a spare mouse button and yes, the pack works so much better. Hated the button change so I went into Razer Synapse and changed my space bar to be that mouse button when playing Starfield. Worked like a charm. And yes, it is SOOOOOO much better.
How have I not heard about this before??? Which is the bug, I wonder?
@@Ubayla I dunno. In the trailer a year ago, when it showed the boost and them firing on the spacers, the boost sure pushed him forward. After using it playing today I feel like this is how it was intended. The boost pack actually feels like more than just a shitty ladder.
You brought Charlie Garcia back to life in a Todd Howard's universe. Perfectly balanced.
LOVING! the music. thank you Spiff for the nostalgia trip.
I love perfectly balanced gameplay. Thank you, your Tea-lordship!
Glad you enjoyed!
To help with co2 drain in fights you can use the personal atmosphere power as you deplete your co2 to instantly replenish it and get unlimited co2 for a little bit.
Moon form is also a great power to use for melee
Love your videos. I am hoping for 12 years of Starfield videos so keep em coming.
Advice for the Red mile... don't take the elevator down, you are already outside, you don't need to.
Work on maxing boost pack... then you can actually boost skip from the platform the entire way to the beacon, and then boost skip back to the elevator... no enemies needed.
Lmao! Love this guy. He's the only youtuber I know that can make a half hour feel like 7 to 10 minutes. Time flies when you're having fun!
In case anyone actually does want to do an unarmed build. Youll need suit mods and the right perks. But most importantly it gives you reason to use more powers and is actually very fun.
Life forced and moon form are game changers for melee/unarmed play
One of the origins gives you the targeting ability, meaning you can kill the enemy ship engines in the space tutorial, board and punch them to death.
So it is quite possible to kill the tutorial enemies entirely with punchies.
You can only board the last ship alive, and you fight two at once during the tutorial, so you can’t punch them all.
@@Skyblade12 ...I boarded a ship while the other was still flying about.
So maybe more testing is needed. Been playing via cloud on XBONE.
We love spiff
Me to
spliff
I also love spiff. (self love is very important)
It's really great to see the father of the Island Bois putting a good name in for their family again as an Astronaut.
It was great hearing Ron Hope's voice done by an Elder Scrolls/Fallout legend Wes Johnson, who did a lot of deity voices in Elder Scrolls.
It's time to show everyone the true power of the starchild, with every punch the starchild imparts the energy of an entire star.
Should of gone for a stealth fister build... give people a shocking surprise 😅.
It's funny how bugthesda fixes minor exploits but game/quest breaking bugs are just ignored
Its been a month. If yall are happygiving cp77 3 years we can give bethesda a few months
@@dickyboi4956Well, it's not the speed but the priority. Game breaking bug? Nah fam, can't have people getting rich quick in a single player game!
@@dickyboi4956 never played cyber punk so how can I compare the 2?
Im willing to bet that the only reason games like Oblivion and Skyrim are still played so much today, its BECAUSE of the jank. If they fixed all the bugs amd exploits, amd released a nice clean well perfirming game, people woukd play it a few times and it would die. The comedy keeps people coming back and makes it iconic.
I mean... bigger bugs might be more complicated so they might take more time to fix and test to see the fix didn't break something else? Sure, it's Bethesda, who knows if they'll ever get fixed, but a month is not a lot of time to do this shit.
The fact that you even tried playing this 9/10 masterpiece is commendable.
The eyes of the HOPE TECH guy looking like Tiber Septims eyes in Oblivion
Classic Tod^^
Imagine being heavily armed mercenary group and then all your friends are fisted to death
Perfect timing :))
Only a guy like Spiff would think up the pun "The Count of Monte Fisto." What a guy!
It's one of Apollo Creed's ring names dude!
The Sonic music during the red mile run made me so happy.
Glorious 2023 standard of gaming... and glorious to watch you breaking it
You know it's the wrong kind of broken when even Spiff can't brake it.
10:31 TODD you’ve done it again, what a masterpiece
The Sonic Green Hill Zone music during the Red Mile was 👌
I love that the unarmed build is mostly about how to avoid combat
I like'd my own Comment
I liked your own comment, too!
Impressive. Maxing stealth and pickpocketing to be able to remove weapons might help this build a bit.
11:04 new subscriber alert for RT Game
From all the Howarding and Todding in the world, this is what you came up with. Great discoveries! Indeed
Great work bro. Just keep going. Always be with you.
Count Fisto looks like the nightmare love child of Jack Skellington and The Lorax
The secret to a really great melle build in this game.I like this.
The random Kirby music freaked me out! It’s my ring tone!
Like so many other of your creations, Count Fisto will haunt my nightmares... I shouldn't have pressed the like button.
You’ve really outdone yourself with the beautiful character creator this time
Oh my, I was so SO hoping that you would do exactly this!
I thoroughly enjoyed the Sonic music during the Red Mile run. Nice touch. ;)
I’ve checked every day the last week in hope that this video would appear. There is nothing better than the spiffing brit and a Bethesda game 👌
The fact that Spiff did this whole video without figuring out how to quick-use aid items is impressive to me.
And also didn't start with a class that give him the unarmed skill straight from the start lmao 😂
Over-powered like Todd Howard, the Spiff’s unstoppable.
How nice of Todd Howard to even include the Dawnstar chest in space Skyrim :)
Some awesome video
