Honey and Amburana. Two great casks.
Nice video. Tried Rio (sample) and I loved it. Cinnamon toast crunch for me. Never seen a bottle in my area, if I did I would buy them all! Favorite Penelope today is their Valencia. Cheers.
I got a bottle of the Rio and I enjoy it. I believe I said the same thing as you about a desert-y bourbon that I would only come back to so often and can only have one pour of it but it is very good for what it is. Very much honey on the front end and Amburana toasted graham cracker with cinnamon on the back. It is very, very sweet. I think my favorite Penelope release has been the American Light Whiskey.
The ALW is a favorite of mine as well. Sort of similar heavy sweetness, the proof helps that one.
@@abandonbourbon Awesome! I agree, the ALW is also sweet but more of a buttercream cake with vanilla icing sweetness and maybe some creme brulee, delicious. The proof definitely helps that one. I'm not the biggest fan of the Penelope Toasted. Some have been good and some not so much.
Great review. I have a few bottles and have killed off half of my first. I think it is incredibly well-balanced and a solid testament to excellent blending and finishing on Penelope's part. I found, for example, the Old Elk Cigar Cut way overdone on the Armagnac, and a distracting back end. This is a dessert whiskey, very sweet, with just enough spice, but highly approachable and a flavor bomb. I see it as that exceptional dessert at the end of a fine meal - something to savor and enjoy - that caps off, or acts as a segway to the rest of the night. Definitely not a daily drinker. By the same regard, I have had some high-age single malt scotches and cognacs and those too were exceptional, but more of a decadent splurge and experience. For me, I appreciate the transition from the honey sweetness to the cinnamon of the Amburana, but also the delicate and subtle way that happens. This easily could have been a mistake, but is more of a ballet. I am hard pressed to find a comparable transition pour that does such flavor movement so well.
Thanks for sharing your experience with it, beautiful.
thanks for review. I am still on hunt for this. sounds great. cheers.
Would probably pair really well with a dark, earthy, coffee and chocolate type of cigar
Great review as always. Coffee tangent: some of the most memorable coffee I’ve ever had I found while driving around Central America and it was also strained through a sock! I’d love to see you make some coffee related videos if you have time.
Thanks for the RIO review, it’s not my thing but I hope people enjoy it.
I’m here for the Brian Backstory™️ in the beginning. Great review, as always!
The first Nulu I tried kind of turned me off of Amburana, it was like chomping on a cinnamon stick and licking a cedar in a bad way, just kind of off. But I recently had Starlight’s Cigar Blend (rye finished in amburana), and it was like eating an apple turnover with fresh cinnamon bark, delicious.
Have not even heard of anyone finding a bottle of Penelope Rio, other than Bourbon Reviewers. Would love to get one at MSRP. 🥃
I agree with you on that - I did find this one at our Total Wine though a few weeks back!
I'd buy it in a minute If I could find it up here in New England!
I’m just here for the “Rio”…
Yes sir!
