I’ve had a bottle of RIO for over a month now, it’s a very good desert bourbon!!
It’s was finished for a total of 2 years. First in the Honey followed by Ambruana. Not sure how long in each though
Got a bottle at an allocated event yesterday for MSRP ($96 before tax). There were five bottles available, and I was tenth in line... Really didn't expect that there would still be one by the time I got to the table - but there was! I'm impressed with it so far. For a lower proof bourbon, it's got a lot of flavor and a very long lasting finish. I'll definitely look out for another bottle when the second batch is release. I expect between sharing this with friends and drinking it myself, this bottle may go quickly!

I got a bottle of their white label bourbon around a year ago and I remember it being excellent. I've been meaning to give some of their other stuff a fair shake ever since.

WA doesn’t have distribution for Penelope, and after they just got bought out by MGP, I’m in sit-and-wait mode to see if Penelope changes and it’ll be worth hunting if/when it gets distribution in WA.
Penelope Rio is at least 4 yrs, 2-3 months in honey barrels and 2 weeks in Amburana barrels… about 3000 bottles released. There will be a batch 2 released by the end of the year. Hope this helps

Don’t know if I’ll ever see this bottle but if I do I’d pick it up if it’s at a reasonable price.
I sampled that stuff at a local liquor store & the nose always reminded me of Apple Jacks cereal. The finish lingers around for a solid 10 minutes. Really enjoy it but it’s almost to the point of over finished & could be categorized as a flavored whiskey. But it’s obviously not. Cheers 🥃
This was good but super unique, it may land in the mood pour category for me. Not sure I could drink multiple pours in a night either.
So I have never seen this in the wild as expected. I have tried the Starlight Cigar Blend that was finished in Amburana and it was too sweet.
Then you wouldn’t like this at all. Which is cool. It’s a unique pour.

Amburana is an acquired taste. I bought 2 bottles of Starlight Cigar Batch Binny’s store pick. Was not a fan at first. Every time I go back to it, I like it more and more. Definitely needs to open up. Hoping next Rio release is larger volume. 🥃

If they we're smart they would let the distillery do what they do.. Just saying. All to often new management want to make sure that it's different.
I'm not a fan of Penelope, I find a papery note in most of their releases. I got to try this a few days before it was announced and it blew me away. I can't remember how many bottles there are but I believe the 3000 bottle count is just a touch high but not by much. ~2800 is what comes to mind. But completely agreed, it's a stunning whiskey and it's absolutely worth getting a pour at a bar.

I had a sample of this and I may be in the minority, but I found it undrinkable.
I live in VA and they've killed the whole concept of bourbon hunting. I see so many vids of new things knowing full well I'll never be able to own a bottle cause of the states terrible allocation system (Jack Daniels Triple Mash is on their allocation list ffs). I just make a list and bring it with me for when the wife and I travel to Asheville NC. Great speak easy bar in the downtown area with one of the best whisky selections I've personally ever seen.

I wasn't impressed with Rio like I thought I'd be. The cinnamon is so over bearing on the nose and palate that the honey just didn't come through. After a few sips I felt like it was similar to tasting a strong flavor over and over where it reaches the point it starts to make you sick. I was fortunate to get it from my buddy who owns a store in MD for 99. He got one bottle.
Oh wow.. well in that case share pours with as many of your friends as possible. I hear ya, sometimes a bottle wont please all.
I'm in MD and had no luck finding it. Let me get a sample! haha.
